Justice League kicks off the New DCU

Last night, at midnight, Geoff Johns and Jim Lee’s JUSTICE LEAGUE #1 made it’s debut at comics stores across the country.  Stores like FAMOUS FACE & FUNNIES in Melbourne, FL  held events, had crowds, and the new flagship title flew off the shelves. We saw the new first meetings of Batman, Green Lantern, and Superman; and we witnessed our first peak at Vic (Cyborg) Stone’s new origin in the making.

Hungry for more? over at THE SOURCE BLOG, Dc revealed this two page spread from next month’s Justice league #2.

Note the gizmo on the bottom left, labeled “Sonic Disruptor”. This make me IMMENSLY happy, as the failed ’80’s maxi-series, SONIC DISRUPTORS (it was scheduled for 12 issues, but got canned at 7) has always given me the giggles. This nod to to this obscure chapter of DC history has done more to endear me to the relaunch than I’d care to admit.

InvestComics Comic Hot Picks 8-31-11

Welcome to this week’s InvestComics Comic Hot Picks.

5……4……3…..2……1…….

Well the time has finally arrived. The redo, restart, do over, resurrection, rebuild………..however you want to slice it or dice it, DC’s massive overhaul is being dubbed “The Relaunch”. Readers will get their hands on only 2 “new” releases this week from DC. As Flashpoint #5 ends in climactic fashion, Justice League #1 will begin the new era for DC. There will be plenty of cool covers to choose from regarding the new JL book. One in particular will garner the most attention, the David Finch variant sketch cover. It’s a beauty and it’ll be the best ratio book as far as collectable.

Meanwhile…..back at Marvel. No relaunch for them (Not yet!), but they have 3 comics to check out this week, obliviously nowhere near as epic as the DC’s books, but interesting nonetheless. Greg Pak ends hi s Hulk run, and what a run it has been. Incredible Hulks #635 promises to deliver.

Look for Marvel to push this next character in our faces for the next year or so. The Ultimate Comics Hawkeye #1 will probably sell out due to the cool variant covers by Adam Kubert and Neal Adams, as well as some good storytelling from Jonathan Hickman.

Marvel’s biggest issue this week will be the newest creation from Brian Micheal Bendis and Mark Bagley. Although this story sounds like it’s been done a million times, we’re sure (we hope) there will be a twist of some sort. This will be Marvel’s easy sell out of the week, and their next movie in 2015.

A few Independents to check out this week; International Spy games Vescell #1, issue number 6 of Guarding theGlobe (last issue), Morning Glories Yearbook 2011, Extinct #1, Dino Strike Force #1, Bluespear #1 and Discord.

Check out the covers of the week below. Do you have a cover we missed that you think deserves to be here? Upload it and share it on the InvestComics Facebook page! Or comment below.

Until next week, Invest wisely.

DCnU: 52 quotes for 52 covers

Over at DC’s THE SOURCE blog, they’ve come up with a little matching game. They’ve listed 52 quotes for their 52 NEW DCU titles, and want you to try and figure out what goes with what.

Click to enlarge the covers collage, and the quotes are below.

“If you’re not moving, you’re not living.”

“If we stop looking to the present and the past, and instead we look to the future…if we ask ourselves what can be–what it will be tomorrow… then we’re asking the right question. Because to hope, to dream, to predict is to shape the city yourself, rather than to be shaped by it.”

“Maybe this is all connected to that guy in Metropolis.”

“You think you and your ‘army’ stand a chance against Superman and a half dozen Green Lanterns and Wonder Woman?”

“They ended the revolution and freed our country. Then they disappeared.”

“Do we look like ‘super-heroes’? We’re the professionals.”

“He’s the worst kind of killer. One with no true pattern.”

“Hee…That’s so cute. You think you’re scary. But mister, I’ve seen scary. And you ain’t got his smile.”

“What I do, I do for the good of the universe. Something you lost sight of thousands of years ago.”

“I’m losing control.”

“We don’t… We don’t call it that. It could be the key to all human knowledge. Black holes. Time travel. Physics, on another level.”

“What I want is your complete attention and for you to understand that your life is now mine.”

“You are not the first doctor I’ve known that tried to play god.”

“Flashpoint effect has definitely closed off time travel.”

“I’ve always enjoyed your sense of humor, Booster.”

“He makes a sound like a supersonic bomber. And then it looks like his shadow itself turns against him.”

“How’s it feel to be nobody’s favorite super-hero?”

“I remember a time when you would have begged me to stop playing superhero!”

“Maybe I was never a good guy, and maybe I was never the really big fish. But if there’s one thing I do know from living other’s people’s lives, it’s that I’ve changed.”

“How long have I been here? How long have I been frozen like this?”

“I always thought you could change the world, Michael.”

“Some people don’t like having their secrets exposed.”

“The only reason I’m here is ’cause if anything happens to you–that would make me the worst former sidekick ever.”

“You think I need a ‘team?’”

“You could do so much good! WE could do so much good!”

“Good to see you, Barbara.”

“Nature sounds its own warning bell.”

“Welcome to Cellblock D of the Central Asian Supermax Meta-Human Facility.”

“I thought I’d left that world behind me. That maybe I could do more good working from the shadows. Apparently, I was wrong. I’m going to need help.”

“You’re Welcome, my friend. And New York City, you’re welcome too!”

“If that scarab pops back up, I want any Green Lanterns within five parsecs to know it.”

“You’ve been partners with this guy for a couple of years, and you still haven’t told him where you really came from?”

“A bunch of Lanterns have just died in sector 3599.”

“We are too late.”

“Because the entire time THEY have been studying ME? I have been studying THEM.”

“This time it spells trouble.”

“I swear to God I don’t know nothin’ about the Gotham Butcher.”

“You’re just in time for your destiny.”

“Miles? Why, my beautiful girls…. You can see forever.”

“People are goin’ nuts. Wait ‘til they watch us kill him.”

“Oh, God. Oh, God. I just murdered someone!”

“You are the parent of your own fear.”

“Kyle Rayner of Earth, you have been chosen.”

“You’re not my partner, you’re my son.”

“Find out who is under that mask.”

“For this great mission I will need help. I will need followers who are prepared to follow me into the jaws of death, and worse…”

“You’ll have my undivided attention… And I’m pretty sure I’ll have yours.”

“Just when I’ve set up my new life, my old one comes back. Well played, Gotham.”

“I didn’t even know how much I missed it.”

“The dream isn’t over.”

“The future is being re-made.”

“Life isn’t without risk. You hear that bon mot a lot. But mostly around business. Or dating. Or eating fried food from street vendors. But we take risks all the time, every day, in a thousand ways. Driving a car. Talking to a stranger. Jay walking. Those are the little ones we don’t even think about. It’s the big ones that make it interesting. At least for me, it is.”

San Diego, CA (August 24, 2011)—IDW Publishing and Nickelodeon today announced that the debut issue of the first TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES comic series, featuring the beloved “Heroes in a Half Shell,” is now available in comic stores throughout North America. The TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES are back in action and ready to fight off evil once again, with an impressive creative team led by TMNT co-creator Kevin Eastman!

Starting today, IDW’s TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES offers a brand-new take on the original series, led by Eastman and co-writer Tom Waltz (Silent Hill: Past Life, Infestation: Outbreak). Phenomenal newcomer Dan Duncan will bring the Turtles to life with dynamic interior art, while Sam Kieth and Walter Simonson provide eye-catching covers for issues 1 and 2, respectively. For issues 3 through 5, Fred Hembeck will pay homage to classic covers. Eastman will also provide layouts for Duncan’s art, as well as variant covers.

This first TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES series features new and exciting storylines that maintain the “turtle power” core beloved by millions of fans. Leonardo, Donatello, Michelangelo, and Raphael reunite to bring their ninja aptitude and teenage attitude to these action-packed adventures. The first arc will tell the origin story of the Turtles and introduce a new villain, the fearsome mutant alley cat, Old Hob. Featuring a cast of familiar characters, including Master Splinter, April O’Neill, Casey Jones, and true to the spirit of the original comics created by Eastman and Peter Laird, the TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES are bigger and badder than ever, and ready to rock old and new fans alike.

In addition to this all-new series, IDW will also offer TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES: THE ULTIMATE COLLECTION. Beginning in October with volume 1, THE ULTIMATE COLLECTION offers over 300 pages of the best of the Turtles’ underground roots, including Mirage Studio’s issues 1 through 7, and the Raphael one-shot by Eastman and Laird.

IDW and Nickelodeon have a long-term commitment to revitalize the universe of TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES comics and graphic novels. It’s all part of a larger initiative to bring Turtles to a new generation of fans, starting with these new storylines that recapture the magic of the original Turtles comics and continuing in 2012, when Nickelodeon will premiere a new CG-animated version of the wildly popular Turtles franchise.

David Lopez joins Abnett, Lanning, and X-man on NEW MUTANTS during REGENESIS

X-MEN: REGENESIS – NEW MUTANTS

Marvel sent us the lates X-Men: Regenesis teaser, this one for the New Mutants. Looks like X-Man, nate Grey, will be staying, and from the silhouettes, we can assume at least Warlock, Sunspot, and probably Cypher are still onboard.  That MAY be Cannonball flying over head, but I can’t quite tell…the blast trail looks a little too soft and cloudy, and the character looks feminine.

Here’s what MARVEL sent.

The big 2 take a bit of a back seat this week as the Independents have some very interesting books coming out.

IDW leads the way this week with a new series. In the immortal words of Chuck D from Public Enemy “Don’t call it a comeback”, they never really left. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1 will once again reign upon the comic book world. With 5 covers coming out, each with a solo of our favorite Ninja, and one with a team, the collector gets to hand pick which Turtle they support most. Rock the vote people! (Scroll through the covers below after this article). TMNT are going to be back in a big way, so will the first issue (first appearance) from 1984 (Mirage) priced at $2200 (Comics Price Guide.com). Once the momentum shifts towards Turtle power again, look for the 1984 comic to swing to the $2500/$3000 area. Cowabonga dudes! (Sorry had to).

Moonstone Comics gets in on the action of reaching back into the vaults, but go further back than 1984 to 1981. Justice Machine #1 from Noble Comics comes in at only $10 (Comics Price Guide.com). The new number one issue this week will be only $3.99. So with calculations here, $13.99 would get you the very first appearance of Justice Machine and the latest! Justice Machine comics back in the 80’s were fun superhero comics and you should try to search for them at your local shop or next comic show in your area.

Dark Horse Presents #3 features a new story from Dave Gibbons, Paul Chadwick, Neal Adams, a 13 page preview of “Red Tide” written and penciled by legend Jim Steranko, and a variant cover by Jim Steranko. 100 pages of total awesomeness from Dark Horse here folks.

Two more Independent comics to check out this week, Image Comics Anne Rice’s Serpent of the Bones #1 and Archie #624 with an appearance by Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg.

Greg Pak end his Hulk run in style with Incredible Hulks #635. This issue is so special that it’ll have 4 covers and “pak” 48 pages. Looks like a fun read with a very big finale. Remember when The Ultimates #1 came out from Millar and Hitch a few years back? This week The Ultimates make their return in a new number one issue Ultimate Comics Ultimates #1 from Loeb and Cho. You decide…….

Image Plots Collected Edition of “Moriarty”

Moriarty Gets Collected in September

MORIARTY is an exciting new science fiction adventure series from Image Comics that follows the misdeeds of the original supervillain, Professor James Moriarty, arch nemesis of Sherlock Holmes. From the grimy streets of London to the haunting British countryside, underground lairs and superscience labs, Professor Moriarty must forge has way through a world without Sherlock.

This September, Image Comics proudly presents the first trade paperback volume of MORIARTY, entitled MORIARTY: THE DARK CHAMBER, collecting the first four super-sized issues of the ongoing series. MORIARTY is written by Daniel Corey (PROPHET), with art by Anthony Diecidue (Stan Lee’s TIME JUMPER), colors by Perry Freeze and letters and design by Dave Lanphear.

It is 20 years after the death of Sherlock Holmes, and Professor James Moriarty is a lost man. MI5 blackmails Moriarty into finding Holmes’ long-lost brother, Mycroft, but what at first appears to be a routine case leads to a web of intrigue that involves a psychic box and its creator, a woman from Moriarty’s past, as well as a new villain that threatens to be greater than Moriarty ever was! See how Moriarty deals with love, loss, war and death rays in the critically acclaimed Image Comics series MORIARTY.

Here’s what reviewers and influential comic creators are saying about MORIARTY:

“MORIARTY is a book that should be mentioned in the same breath as THE WALKING DEAD, CHEW and HACK/SLASH when it comes to the best comics coming out of Image.”Horror Haven Reviews

“I love MORIARTY. Most of all, I loved how in a world without Holmes, that it’s only in the mystery, the unanswered questions, that life for Sherlock’s arch enemy can begin again. Insightful, exciting and cool – with gritty, atmospheric art to match.” — Jim Krueger (EARTH X, JUSTICE, FOOTSOLDIERS)

“MORIARTY: THE DARK CHAMBER is irresistible. Professor James Moriarty, Sherlock Holmes’ arch-nemesis, drawn from retirement and off on his own death-defying adventure? It’s one of those simple, perfect ideas you kick yourself for not thinking of first, and Corey and Diecidue carry it off in fine style.” — Scott Tipton (ILLYRIA: HAUNTED, STAR TREK: INFESTATION)

“Even with characters that lead a pretty sad existence, there is a drive for something greater or at least a sense of discovery. It moves the piece along at a thrilling pace that respects, but expands upon Sir Arthur Canon Doyle’s fiction in a way that is thrilling and smart.”The Daily Blam!

“Corey spins a wonderful world of conspiracy, despair, and even science fiction.” — IGN

“…this is a perfect example of a great collaboration of story and artist.” — Newsarama

“[MORIARTY] takes an intriguing look at that relationship between good and evil.” — USA Today

“…this is a damn good comic book.” — Bloody-Disgusting.com

ANIMAL, VEGETABLE, OR MINERAL?

The Surprise Hit of the Summer Finds Its Perfect Match at Image Comics

Berkeley, CA – 16 August 2011 – You’ve read about it, you’ve heard about it, now it’s here. Up-and-coming writer Sam Humphries (CBGB, Fraggle Rock) and Steven Sanders (FIVE FISTS OF SCIENCE, Uncanny X-Men: The Heroic Age), provocative sci-fi one-shot OUR LOVE IS REAL is coming to Image Comics this November after capturing the attention of the comics industry over the summer.

Set in the not-too-distant future, OUR LOVE IS REAL is a bold story about the many odd forms that love can take. Originally self-published in limited quantities, Humphries and Sanders were eager to share their story with a wider audience following the torrent of critical accolades OUR LOVE IS REAL received from fans, the comics press and creators alike.

Here’s just a taste of what they’re saying:

“A splendidly-perverse and eye-poppingly gorgeous fistful of futuristic fun.”
— Jason Aaron, writer of Scalped, Wolverine, and Ghost Rider

“One of the funniest comics I’ve had the pleasure of reading in quite some time… 4 out of 5 stars.”
— Chad Nevett, Comic Book Resources

“One of the Top Ten Comics of July 2011…this is one of the most surprisingly original sci-fi stories we’ve ever read… a shocking, funny, and emotional read that will stick with you long after you put it down.”
— Alex Zalben, MTV Geek

“I strongly encourage you to check out this bravura creation from Steven Sanders and Sam Humphries.”
— Tom Pinchuk, Comic Vine

“It may shatter your doggone senses.”
— Caleb Goellner, Comics Alliance

“It is a social satire, as all the best science fiction is…it’s funny, it’s poignant, it’s clever, it’s intriguing…phones had been ringing off the hook and retailers have been desperately trying to order new copies…it’s a really fun comic book that could get quite a following.”
— Rich Johnston, Bleeding Cool

“A mix of neo-futuristic sci-fi with a love story that is both sexy and utterly heartfelt.”
— Casey Seijas, Wizard

“Already catching observers off-guard.”
— Albert Ching, Newsarama

“Impressive…dynamic.”
— Tim O’Shea, Robot 6 @ Comic Book Resources

“It’s equal parts shocking and hilarious and the kind of out there thinking comics can do best.”
— Ryan K. Lindsay, The Weekly Crisis

“One of the more interesting comic book stories of the year…4.5 out of 5 stars.”
— Kyle Garret, Comics Bulletin

“The response to the book, even in limited release, has been nothing short of amazing,” said Humphries. “Image Comics has embraced our twisted little comic inside and out. We know we’ve found a great place to bring OUR LOVE IS REAL to a wider audience.”

“This is a unique book,” added Sanders. “We weren’t sure how it would be received. But we love it, and apparently a lot of other people do too! We can’t wait for everyone to get a chance to see it for themselves.”

In OUR LOVE IS REAL, the plantsexuals are rioting in the streets for equal rights, humans are falling in love with dogs, and crystals are much more than just jewelry! When a chance encounter on the job changes a riot cop’s life forever, he finds himself caught in a bizarre love triangle that blurs romance, crime, and lust beyond recognition.

OUR LOVE IS REAL (SEP110383), a uniquely formatted 8 x 8 24-page black and white sci-fi satire comic for $3.99, will be available for order in the September issue of Previews and goes on sale in stores November 2.

Paul Grist Muddies things up at IMAGE

HIS NAME IS MUD

Acclaimed Cartoonist Paul Grist Brings New Superhero to Image Comics in Mudman

Berkeley, CA — 11 August 2011 — After self-publishing for much of the ’90s, Paul Grist brought two critically acclaimed original titles to Image Comics in 2002: the crime drama KANE and then the eclectic superhero series JACK STAFF. Recently, Grist has been using his sparse, signature style to develop a new superhero that will be introduced to the world this November with the debut of MUDMAN.

“This is my ‘Back to Basics’ superhero comic,” explained Grist. “It’s not about alien menaces or cosmic powers (though they may pop up once in a while); it’s all about growing up and finding your way in the world, and how the decisions that you make can affect others. In a way, it’s probably the most autobiographical comic I’ve ever done. But with added mud.”

“Paul has been one of my favorite creators since writer Robert Loren Fleming turned me onto KANE back in the ’90s,” said Image Comics Publisher Eric Stephenson. “His style looks deceptively simple, but he’s a master of his craft, capable of some of the cleverest storytelling in comics. It’s a big thrill for me that Paul’s part of Image, and I can’t wait to see what he does with MUDMAN. ”

In MUDMAN #1, the new school year is just beginning, and it isn’t starting off well for teenager Owen Craig. His day just keeps going from bad to worse: He gets run over, he gets detention, and then he learns his father has actually been taken hostage by armed bank robbers. But that’s only the beginning of his problems. Now his body appears to be turning into mud!

FANTASTIC FOUR returns in November, with #600

While DC has cancelled it’s entire line, relaunching 52 (plus a few) with all new #1 issues, Marvel is bringing back THE FANTASTIC FOUR, and picking up with issue #600, which leads one to assume that the current series, FF (Future Foundation) is ‘ending” and counting as the fill-in issue numbers between FANTASTIC FOUR, which ended with Johnny Storm’s apparent death in issue 588, and the new 600th issue.

Interestingly enough, the John Romita JR cover to FANTASTIC FOUR #600 features a Fantastic FIVE, as both fallen member Human Torch, and his current replacement, Spider-Man, are included alonside Mr. Fantastic, The Thing, and The Invisible Woman.

Titan Books To Publish the Definitive Flash Gordon Library

Titan Books has announced the publication of The Complete Flash Gordon Library. Compiling every strip and every story, this series of restored full-color hardcover volumes will showcase the action and artistry that thrilled audiences for decades.

Everyone knows Flash Gordon–the most iconic science fiction swashbuckler ever to burst forth from the newspaper pages. His adventures wielded so much energy that they inspired everyone who followed, no matter what the medium. Filmmaker George Lucas famously revealed, “Growing up in California, I was enchanted by two things…race cars and Flash Gordon. The first love I put to use in American Graffiti, the second eventually turned into Star Wars.”

Flash Gordon first hit superstardom in 1934 with his comic strip adventures, which continued unabated for seven decades. His influence spread like wildfire into every medium–films, television, novels, comic books, radio plays, and more. Every generation has had its incarnation of the character, and yet another major motion picture is reported to be in the works.

The mission of The Complete Flash Gordon Library will be to collect every strip and every story, offering them in affordable, full-color hardcover volumes, carefully restored and revealing the action and the artistry that thrilled audiences for decades. Through the painstaking efforts of renowned comic strip historian Pete Maresca, readers will experience the heroics of Flash Gordon, the beauty of Dale Arden, the evil of Ming the Merciless, and the exotic setting of the distant planet Mongo. Each installment will be meticulously reworked so that the intricate artwork, the vivid colors, and the unparalleled action will explode off of the page.

Beginning with the renowned stories written and illustrations by Alex Raymond–the genius behind the hero–The Complete Flash Gordon Library will continue with the other brilliant illustrators who took the helm and ran with his creation: Austin Briggs, Mac Raboy, Dan Barry, and many more. Each page will be 11″ x 10″ — specifically designed to spotlight the action-packed artistry of the creators, and each volume will feature 176 or more pages of full-color action. Volume One, “On the Planet Mongo,” will feature a foreword by renowned illustrator Alex Ross, and future installments will offer other special features revealing the secrets behind the strip and its creators.

The Complete Flash Gordon Library joins Titan’s other long-running newspaper strip collections including the critically acclaimed  Simon and Kirby Library, and the Modesty Blaise and James Bond 007 series. Once the library is complete, readers will forever thrill to an epic adventure unparalleled in American popular culture.

FIGHT FOR YOUR FREEDOM!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
FIGHT FOR YOUR FREEDOM!
Support CBLDF With The Industry’s Greatest Creators in CBLDF LIBERTY ANNUAL 2011 from Image Comics

Berkeley, CA — 8 August 2011 — United We Stand Against Censorship! That’s the message from Image Comics, over two dozen of the industry’s greatest creators, and our friends at DC Comics and Marvel Comics, who have all banded together to deliver the greatest CBLDF benefit comic yet — CBLDF LIBERTY ANNUAL 2011!

Famed comics editor Bob Schreck, Editor-in-Chief of Legendary Comics, and Assistant Editor Greg Tumbarello view censorship as the ultimate form of bullying and have gathered an all-star team of comics creators to tell powerful stories that take a stand against censorship. CBLDF LIBERTY ANNUAL 2011 comprises 48 powerful pages of all new stories and art. The proceeds from the sale of the book benefit the ever-important First Amendment work of the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund.

Schreck declares, “It’s an honor to be asked to edit LIBERTY ANNUAL! We wanted to show the human side of what it means to be censored, and we’re elated with how many powerful and heartfelt tales were delivered. With an American facing prosecution in Canada for the comics he reads, the work that CBLDF does is more important now than ever, and the CBLDF LIBERTY ANNUAL is essential tool in the fight against censorship.”

CBLDF LIBERTY ANNUAL 2011 collects incredible contributions, including original stories by superstars J. Michael Straczynski (Superman: Earth One), Frank Quitely (All-Star Superman), J.H. Williams III (Batwoman), Steve Niles (30 days of Night), Judd Winick (Catwoman), Mark Waid (Daredevil) and Jeff Lemire (Sweet Tooth), and Carla Speed McNeil (Finder). Look for all-new tales featuring Grendel by Matt Wagner, Cowboy Ninja Viking by AJ Lieberman and Riley Rossmo, and Elephantmen by Richard Starkings and Shaky Kane. Plus: a massive and first-ever full-color story from independent comics master Craig Thompson (Blankets)! Marvel and DC Comics have stepped up to show their support, with all-new pin-ups of Batman by Dustin Nguyen, X-Men by Greg Land, Green Lantern by Ivan Reis, and the Avengers by Greg Horn! It’s all topped off by incredible covers by John Cassaday, Matt Wagner, and two variant covers by Frank Quietly: a full-color, 1 in 25 cover, and a black and white, 1 in 50 cover!

“Bob’s experience as an editor is hard to beat, and we’re proud to have him at the helm,” says CBLDF Executive Director Charles Brownstein. “Bob made a book that has something to say, without being sentimental or preachy. He’s made a comic we can all be proud of, and that will go a long way towards advancing the CBLDF’s important work.”

Image Comics Publisher Eric Stephenson says, “It should go without saying that free speech is one of our most fundamental rights as citizens of this great country. Our right to free expression is challenged on a daily basis, though, and sometimes, those challenges occur within the comics world. Without the diligence of organizations like the CBLDF, everyone in the comics community would be much worse off. There are always bullies out there trying to keep people from enjoying the rights we’re all entitled to, but thankfully there are also people willing to stand up for those rights. I’m proud that Image is able to lend a hand.

Join the fight against censorship by picking up your copy of CBLDF LIBERTY ANNUAL 2011 (AUG110415), a 48-page full color comic book benefiting the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, available from Image Comics on October 12, 2011, for $4.99.

ABOUT THE COMIC BOOK LEGAL DEFENSE FUND

InvestComics Comic Hot Picks 8-10-11

Welcome to the latest installment of InvestComics Comic Hot Picks for the week of 8/10/11.

On a personal note: This past week Bluewater Comics sent over the final cover to the comic I wrote. “Good Boy” will appear in Vincent Price Presents #36. It’s an amazing cover done by artist Stefano Cardoselli, with equally amazing colors by Jeff Balke. Click HERE to check out the cover. Look for the solicit in the next Previews, it’s due for a November release. Order the comic, and if you want it signed, send it to me and I’ll sign it for you! I’ll cover postage sending it back to you! Thanks to everyone that gave well wishes when the cover debuted on Facebook and InvestComics. This is just the beginning……..

Now the IC Hot Picks!

DC presses onward with Flashpoint, but it’s a Batman comic that will make some noise this week. Check out Detective Comics #881 for what DC says “an issue that everyone will be talking about”. And staying the course with Batman, an 80 Page Giant special will have a boat load of various creators contributing.

Marvel turns back to a duo that was extremely popular back in the 80’s. Cloak and Dagger will have a new number one issue with Spider-Island Cloak and Dagger #1. Look for the popularity to resurge and spin into its own series eventually.  InvestComics called it with Alpha Flight, although a limited series, they too will be back in an ongoing. Look for a very affordable first appearance of C&D in Peter Parker Spectacular Spider-Man #64 (1982) for only $10 (Comics Price Guide.com pricing). Spider-Island also delivers a one shot called Deadly Foes. It focuses on the villain Jackal. Jackal first appeared in Amazing Spider-Man #129, and cost $1000! This issue also contains the first appearance of some guy with a big gun and a skull on his chest. Speaking of the big guy with the skull, coming out this week will be another new origin story in Punisher Max #16 as told by Jason Aaron and Steve Dillon.

A very cool independent book worth checking out this week, IDW’s Dungeons & Dragons Drizzt #1. It’s Drizzt’ first ever solo book, and should appeal to all D&D fans.

Have a great week. Click on the thumbs below to check out the covers of the week.

Sam Sarkar is proud to announce that his latest title, THE VAULT, is being adapted for film by Graham King’s GK Films and Johnny Depp’s Infinitum Nihil. Based on the comic miniseries created and written by Sarkar (Caliber: First Canon of Justice), illustrated by Garrie Gastonny (Senior artist at Imaginary Friends Studios, Warren Ellis’ Supergod) and edited by Dave Elliott (current Editor-in-Chief of Benaroya Publishing), THE VAULT will be produced by Johnny Depp, along with Infinitum Nihil’s president, Christi Dembrowski, as well as Graham King and Tim Headington from GK Films. Sam Sarkar is repped by Jon Levin at CAA and Nicole Romano and David Schiff of The Schiff Company.

THE VAULT is about a small team of treasure hunters, struggling to excavate a dangerous and legendary treasure pit before a massive storm hits Sable Island, the “Graveyard of the North Atlantic.” Equipped with all the latest technology, the scientists believe they are prepared against all of nature’s fury, but nothing can prepare them for what they are about to unleash.

“So thankful and happy to have the support of Johnny, Christi, Graham, Tim and Denis in bringing the movie of the Vault to life.” States Sarkar. “Lots more surprises to come!”

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

THUNDER! COMIC BOOK/ POP CULTURE MAGAZINE DEBUTS IN OCTOBER

Stormfront Entertainment announces the debut of THUNDER!, the new magazine
devoted entirely to the world of comic book movies and TV shows with exclusive
interviews, behind the scenes episode guides and much more.

Our debut issue includes a first look at the live action Avengers film,
featuring exclusive interviews with writer/director Joss Whedon and producer
Kevin Feige. From there we go behind the scenes on the made for DVD animated
film Batman: Year One (including one-on-one interviews with voice actors Ben
McKenzie, who stars as Batman, and Eliza Dushku, who voices Catwoman); and DC’s
first foray into the world of CG animation with Green Lantern: The Animated
Series. Sticking to the world of DC a little longer, we provide a preview of the
next film in the DVD series, Justice League: Doom. This in turn leads to a look
at season one of AMC’s The Walking Dead.

Each issue of THUNDER! will take a flipbook approach by featuring a different
extensive episode guide to a television series. In the case of issue number one,
things are brought full circle by heading back into Avengers territory with the
most comprehensive guide to the animated The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes,
in which supervising producer Josh Fine and story editor Chris Yost discuss all
26 episodes of season one while providing some tantalizing clues to year two.

THUNDER! is edited by journalist Ed Gross, whose wide-ranging credits include
Cinescape, Starlog, Femme Fatales, Fangoria, Total Movie, Film Fantasy, SFX,
Life Story, Movie Magic, Cinefantastique, SciFi Now and Geek Monthly.
Additionally, he has written a number of non-fiction books on film, television
and comics.

“For me, THUNDER! is the culmination of a lifelong passion for comics and film,”
offers Gross. “This is a great opportunity to combine and cover both of them in
a way that no one else is doing.”

“With the loss of Wizard magazine, we are trying to pick up where they left off.
I was a huge fan of their production value and we plan to hit that with this
book” said Managing Editor Hayden Cowan.

The quarterly magazine will retail for $7.99 and be available through Barnes &
Noble and most online venues like Amazon.com as well as local comic book stores.

A HEALTHY DOSE OF DOC BIZARRE, M.D.

A HEALTHY DOSE OF DOC BIZARRE, M.D.
Joe Casey and Andy Suriano Administer Dark Humor in Upcoming Graphic Novel

Berkeley, CA – 3 August 2011 – The writer of GODLAND and recent, over-the-top sensation BUTCHER BAKER, THE RIGHTEOUS MAKER has once again teamed up with his former CHARLATAN BALL collaborator Andy Suriano to offer readers a new solution to their supernatural problems. DOC BIZARRE, M.D., a strange tale of sick monsters, medically-challenged myths, and ghouls at Death’s door, will debut in October from Image Comics.

“I loved collaborating with Joe again,” Suriano said. “Every time we put our heads together I feel like I need a trip to the sanitarium after–the dude’s sick! In the best possible way, of course. This new cast of characters we brought to life are twisted and equally as colorful; I just hope everyone’s ready for the bizarre!”

“Another technicolor brain dump from Andy and me,” added Casey. “This time delivered in one, easily digestible chunk of hardcover graphic novel goodness! Hopefully folks will have as much fun reading it as we had making it.”

Prepare to enter the world of DOC BIZARRE, M.D., a world of coughing creeps and diseased devils, a world where a doctor’s prescription might include wolfsbane and garlic, a world where even the most powerful vampires find themselves crippled by the common cold. Who else can they turn to for relief, but DOC BIZARRE, M.D.?

DOC BIZARRE M.D., a 72-page full color comedic horror comic for $12.99, is available to order in the August issue of Previews and will be available at a comic store near you on October 19, 2011.

InvestComics Comic Hot Picks 8-3-11

Welcome to InvestComics Comic Hot Picks for the week of 8/3/11

Marvel cranks out the hype machine once again (seems like they do every week…….wait a sec, they do) with 2 “must get” comics. One they claim will be talked about for the next 10 years; S.H.I.E.L.D. #2. What happens on the exact day after day 3650? Do we stop talking about it? The second “must get” comic of the week is Amazing Spider-Man #667. Why is this comic one you should not pass up? -According to Marvel-. Maybe something to do with everyone having Spider powers and the whole Spider-Island push. Doesn’t sound like anything major, but probably a cool story nonetheless?

Rob Liefeld leads the way for the Independents this week. JUST like the old days too! Image Comics releases Infinite #1 with 6 variant covers! Ridiculous isn’t it? Who cares?! Like it or not it’s happening. Check out the Deluxe edition cover from Liefeld. Doesn’t that remind you of days gone…….ahhhh the absurd 90’s. In the NOT so absurd department is another Image comic coming out this week called Severed #1. A horror comic from Eisner nominated Scott Snyder with art by New York Times best selling artist Percy Jackson makes THIS comic a “must get.” Titan Comics releases a comic book of one of the most downright politically incorrect cartoons to ever hit the airwaves; Family Guy #1. If the inside of this comic is as disturbing as the show, it’s going to be……….awesome!!

Okay too many great covers this week, so if you’d like to check them out, click on the video.

Enjoy the music and nice pictures.

Music (Score)from the newly released Comic Book movie Cowboys and Aliens

See you next week! Invest wisely.
