HOTTEST New Comic Back Issues During May 2013

Top 50 Hottest Comic Titles during MAY 2013 – list by Terry Hoknes of HoknesComics.com

Just a personal list from my own observations of the market.  I believe these were the most demand and growing in value books this month.     I did not focus on variants specifically as I can’t even keep track of them all.    If you think I have missed any titles please let me know.  I will revise this list every month and you will be amazed at how much can change in one month good and bad.

The big news of the past month is that NBC announced they would not turn THE SIXTH GUN into a tv series.  This led to 50% drops in value for all issues and as spring kicked in there were many less buyers online causing an overall drop in price of all “hot” comics.

So May doesn’t really have any truly NEW hot books.  What we see is mostly a continuation of interest in the same books but mostly at a reduced price.   I expect this will stay true for the next 5 months but the big question is will prices and interest pick up again for these books in the fall.   Some fear the speculation boom of 2012/2013 has peaked and is now over.  It is possible however there will always be certain books that go up in value in any time period simply based on supply and demand.

Here are my picks of what I believe are the hottest comics of the last few years online based on back issue sales ABOVE cover price.

#1 INJUSTICE GODS AMONG US (DC) – the only hot DC title small print runs and 3rd prints selling out.  Currently at its hottest right now at $85.00 for set of #1-4      Many sellers with reprint sets that also sell well.   #1 2nd printing hit $12.00   #1 $50 #2 $25 #3 $10

#2 RACHEL RISING (Abstract) #1-16     TV announcement this week helped drive demand up as Diamond sold out of even the current issue not yet out this week.  #1 hitting $200.00 peak around May 1st.   Many issues still available direct from publisher website at cover.   #1 settled down now to about $80.00.    Sellers hyping rarity of 2nd and 3rd printings and getting high amounts as well.

#3 THE WALKING DEAD (Image) #108 1st app Ezekiel and #110 origin and battle of Ezekiel with Michonne.  All back issues #1-110 are sold out and bring above cover prices.  #92 and #93 extremely hot at  $30.00 each

#4 PETER PANZERFAUST (Image) #1-9 prices peaked in March.  #8 and #9 really hot but less demand for #4-6.    #1 hit high of $300 now around $200.00   Current prices #2 $80 / #3 $25 / #4-7 $10 each / #8 $30 / #9 $25

#5 NOWHERE MEN (Image) #1-3 prices had peaked at $40,25,15 in March.    Set of #1-5 now sells for $60.00

#6 HOAX HUNTERS (Image) this title was cover price material until a TV show proposal shot prices way up on all issues.  #0 and #1 are extremely hot and hit $30 each.

  1. Thanks Hokness for an awesome article. This was a lot. I can’t help but feel disappointed with the current market. From personal observation, it seems that comics heat up whenever there is speculation of a tv series, then when it becomes official, it kind of cools down (Peter Panzerfaust), then when the show comes out – they heat up again.

I think the reason why The Walking Dead became so successful was because it became the #1 TV show on the networks and it’s future is very promising. Plus, Unlike Peter Panzerfaust, the comic book series isn’t set to end. It’s just ongoing forever. So the TV series may very well go on another 10-years if they want it too (if ratings are good). That’s the way I see it anyways, could be wrong of course.

Six Gun was a reality check. It just showed how much a TV announcement rocked things. I noticed the fall in prices not just for that series, but everything comic related. This made me change my outlook and collecting a bit. I think I’ll be investing more on The Walking Dead and not get caught up so much on “What’s the next walking dead series” because it may not happen anytime soon. Let’s not forget about the other successful comics like Saga, Thief of Thieves, Manhattan Projects, East of West, etc. – That have been sitting there getting better and better, but haven’t really moved much in price. I think these will bounce back eventually since nothing went wrong with the actual series, but they’ve been out for a while.

The sex series has my attention because issue #3 was supposed to be a really good issue that kind of redeemed or set the series in full motion. I think this maybe a hit, but again…HBO/Showtime could proposition a series.

I guess at this point we won’t really know. As for flipping books…Like Jay Katz said…can’t sit on them forever. I learned my lesson as I’m trying to make some sales now for some books that came out several months ago. I missed out on some of the heat and now I see how quickly you have to sell.

I do have faith in Peter Panzerfaust. I’m hoping. Until then, I’ll be collecting my Walking Dead issues…

    Thanks!

  2. Word of advice (caution) CL, BE VERY CAREFUL of the Walking Dead series. It may have reached its peak. I would not sit on those too much longer. The #1 issue, graded 9.9 or 9.8 I think sold for $10,000. The buyer of that book will be losing a lot of his/her profits once the zombie craze cools down. Walking Dead is NOT Spider-Man, Superman, X-Men, Wolverine, etc. Those CHARACTERS will withstand time as they have shown, zombies are a fad. That’s my take on the Walking Dead. Be wary because when the market starts collapsing, there are going to be a lot of unhappy collectors that held on too long.

    • Hey… I’m seriously considering Batman #1 New 52 1:200 black and white sketch. However, that book has skyrocketed in value recently and it’s a lot. Do you think it would be a better investment than The walking dead 19? Looking at getting either slabbed cgc 9.8.

      Thanks!

  3. Wow. Thanks a lot Jay. I appreciate that! I’ll take your advice! I suppose I just want issue #19 for my PC, and I’ll keep it moving.

  4. Comiclord – I would say both of those books are definitely books, they are both a bit on the rare side and yes are both costly right now. I always ask buyers what their purpose for the buying the books is. Do you just want to own it? Do you plan to flip it in 6 months? 6 years? Knowing this I can give better advice. For long term over years I think Batman might be a safer bet as we all expect Batman to ALWAYS be around and highly collected. But I also worry about books that are so hot that really the only direction they can likely go is DOWN !

  5. Lucky for the Walking Dead the print run for issue 1 is pretty small. Either way it WILL see a sharp decline at the conclusion of the TV show. As far as something like the Sixth Gunn I believe the hype did something great for comics, introduced a whole lot more people to Cullen Bunn’s work. His work on Fear Itself is the only decent thing to come out of that entire mess. His series the Damned is arguable better than the Sixth Gunn and should be optioned in its own right. If anything the sharp increase followed by decrease in the sales of the Sixth Gunn series only illustrates how tough it is to gauge the market and then how impossible it is to predict NBC’s decision not to order the series. It would be nice if prices would rise and fall based on merit not the whims of Hollywood execs but that’s just not the way it is. The collectible market we love is a volatile one but that’s what makes it fun!

  6. Topher – thanks for the comments – you make some great points. The Walking Dead might have better longevity than people think – it really has proved to be a media sensation and house hold name and I see the TV series running many more years if based on its current popularity – I do agree prices will come down if the show is cancelled or drops in popularity but I believe it will always be a valuable book. TMNT #1 is the most valuable comic of the last 40 years and it has gone through periods of drought and still held its value due to historic importance and rarity.

What do you think? InvestComics would like to know.
