Start Me Up! Joshua Black: The Hierarchy of Christ

Welcome to the first installment of our new weekly feature, Start Me Up! Every week we’re going to feature a different comic book or comic book based Kickstarter project that we find interesting. We are going to include all genres and all types of projects, from low goal Indie books to high goal books and projects from well known creators. Our purpose is to clue you in on some cool books that we think deserve your attention and could use your funding dollars. We will also review the rewards and products that we receive from successfully funded Kickstarters that we contribute to, and we encourage you to send us your own reviews as well. Remember, we are only giving our opinions on what Kickstarter projects we think look interesting, and we can’t guarantee any certain outcome or satisfaction for any project that you decide to help fund.

Con Artist Entertainment LogoOur very first featured Kickstarter project is Joshua Black: The Hierarchy of Christ, from Con Artist Entertainment. You may have heard of Con Artist Entertainment before, either through one of their several existing comic publications like Zombie Squad, Stronger Than Fiction, or Devil’s Six, or one of their bevy of pop culture and geek oriented podcasts, such as The Con Artist Podcast, Vodka and Video Games, or Untitled Nonsense. Full disclosure, they have also recently become a co-sponsor and syndicator of our very own comic podcast, Breaking the 4th Wall, but Invest Comics and Breaking the 4th Wall have nothing to do with the comic publishing side of Con Artist Entertainment.

The concept of Joshua Black seems fairly simple at first. High school student Joshua Black learns that he is the heir to the throne of Heaven. But, as we all know, with great power come great responsibility. And if your life isn’t that great to begin with, suddenly having the power of God can make things pretty darned complicated. Add in a tug of war between Heavenly and Infernal forces, and stuff can get downright wacky.

I’ll admit, I’m a sucker for a good “heaven and hell messing with the affairs of mortals” story, so this is right up my alley. Joshua Black promises to be a nice dark comedy/horror that will fill the hole in my heart between episodes of Supernatural, and keep me satisfied until they make another (good) Prophecy movie. So, of you’re a fan of the Winchester brothers, or wish they’d convince Christopher Walken to give the Heavenly ranks another go, this could be the book for you.

So let’s look at the different reward tiers. This is the thing that can make or break an otherwise great Kickstarter project, and, sadly, so many creators fail miserably at this part. Luckily, the guys at Con Artist have done a fantastic job of offering you lots of good stuff at reasonable donation amounts that appeal to any comic fans budget.

Do you only have $1 to spare? They’ve got you covered! For one measly dollar, you get a thank-you tweet, a shout out on their podcast, and digital copies of issues 1 and 2. That’s two books for only a buck! You can’t beat that, I tell you.

How about an extra fiver in your wallet? For only $5, you get the tweet, the shout out, personalized desktop and mobile wallpapers, AND digital copies of issues 1-4!

For a paltry $10, you get everything above, plus a printed thank you in the collected edition, as well as digital copies of both the collected edition and issues 1-7!

For $25, which is the level I chose, you get everything above, plus a signed physical variant cover edition of issue #1, and a signed 11×17 Joshua Black print!

Fifty American dollars gets you a choice of either two different signed physical variant #1s and a personalized video message, OR two different signed physical variant #1s and a Joshua Black t-shirt, as well as all previous rewards!

The tiers go up from there, and the rewards keep getting better and better, including the chance to guest host an episode of a Con Artist podcast, sketches, actually becoming a character in a future issue of Joshua Black, or even hosting your very own podcast on the Con Artist Network for an entire month. There are lots of great rewards, so be sure you go check it out and see for yourself. The project has already reached its goal, and is nearly at the first stretch goal, with only a few days left to go. I know I’m excited to be a part of this project, and I can’t wait to get my goodies in the mail! Joshua Black: The Hierarchy of Christ promises to be a winner.
