The Savage She-Hulk #18 (1981) – How about one more ridiculous first appearance of a fourth rate character? Grappler. Looks like he may have also appeared in five comics in 35 years.

Fantastic Four #254 (1983) – As with most comic book characters, there is always one creator that defines the character to the point that the majority of collectors will associate that particular character with “them”. Batman/Miller, Spider-Man/McFarlane, Green Lantern/Adams, Nick Fury/Steranko…..you get the idea. We’re not putting She-Hulk on the scale of those characters, but the creator is the one we’re talking about here. This comic is the first time John Byrne writes and draws She-Hulk in a comic book. Byrne/She-Hulk.

Avengers #233 (1983) – John Byrne fill in issue. It also happens to be part of his Fantastic Four #254 story. John writes and John draws. He doesn’t do the next issue and he didn’t do the previous issue. What John wants, John gets.

Thor #334 (1983) – Jennifer first appears in a Thor comic, with her Avengers team of course. Three issues later though, The Thor character will never be the same. Going from a B-lister to an A-lister, but that’s another story for another day.

The Thing #5 (1983) – John Byrne writes. She-Hulk appears in several issues of the Thing, starting here. Appearing in a solo role.

Marvel Graphic Novel #18 (1985) – John Byrne gets an entire book to draw and write on the She-Hulk. Not just any book, a Marvel graphic novel. That’s 72 oversized pages of awesome John Byrne She-Hulk.

Fantastic Four #291 (1986) – This cover pays homage to Action Comics #1. She-Hulk takes the place of Superman and holds the car above her head. This John Byrne cover is on point.

Fantastic Four #293 (1986) – Jerry Ordway provides this great cover of the She-Hulk.

Thing #36 (1986) – She-Hulk vs Ms. Marvel. No not THAT Ms. Marvel, the “new” Ms. Marvel (Sharon Ventura) that appeared a few issues prior in Thing #27. Sharon last appeared in a comic book in 2007, but this checklist isn’t about Sharon.

Marvel Comics Presents #18 (1989) – She-Hulk story written and drawn by John Byrne.

Sensational She-Hulk #1 (1989) – Origin retold. John Byrne start the second series. Writer/artist here. Awesome Byrne cover here as well. Actually, from here on out every single John Byrne She-Hulk cover in this series is stellar. The number one cover here still remains as one of the most iconic She-Hulk covers of all time. This series acted as the modern day Deadpool series does today. Breaking the fourth wall and complete zany-ness. John Byrne’s run here was simply a work of art in every sense of the word. If a television show ever hits, this comic (series) might be the place to go as far as speculation is concerned. We feel that the TV series (total speculation here) would be based more from here and not the first series. Again, we’re speculating and could be completely incorrect. No one knows. Invest wisely!

Sensational She-Hulk #2 (1989) – First appearance of Weezi Mason.

Marvel Age #76 (1989) – As a growing trend for quite a while, Marvel or John Byrne loved putting Jennifer in a bathing suit on his covers.

Sensational She-Hulk #39 (1992) – And another awesome cover from Byrne.

Sensational She-Hulk #40 (1992) – The first appearance of Marvel Editor at the time Renee Witterstaetter as herself. Renee has done a ton of writing and coloring on top of her editorial work. She’s often seen at Michael Golden’s booth at your local convention. The cover here….wow. Why was John Byrne so into sexually exploiting the She-Hulk on so many covers?? They must have sold well to the fanboys. This issue is the most expensive aftermarket comic in the entire Sensational She-Hulk. More than the corrective color issue a few issues back.  A scarce book here drives up the price and one of the last sexual innuendo covers in this run. John Byrne officially runs into the “political correctness police”. Pushed the envelope too far according to Marvel standards we guess.

Sensational She-Hulk #41 (1992) – The first time creator John Byrne appears (as himself) in the She-Hulk series.

Marc Spector: Moon Knight #41 (1992) – The first time Jennifer appears in a Moon Knight comic.

Sensational She-Hulk #50 (1993) – The 50th anniversary issue. 48 pager. John Byrne loads the book up with guest appearances from a number of Marvel characters. This issue would be the last Byrne issue as Jennifer looks for a new creative team to take over her comic series. John Byrne appears in this issue and says that this comic should die (be canceled) due to the fact he’s not on it anymore.

Sensational She-Hulk #52 (1993) – This issue features an Adam Hughes cover!

Sensational She-Hulk #54 (1993) – The first official appearance of Jennifer’s momma into the Marvel universe; Elaine Ann Banner Walters.

Sensational She-Hulk #60 (1994) – The series ends here. It was a good ride. 60 issues. 14 years later. Penciler and Cover artist Pat Olliffe pays homage to John Byrne’s number one issue cover. Fantastic job here from Pat. Sorry to see you go Jennifer!

A potentially light week as far as the speculation side goes, plenty of great reading ahead. Although there is one speculation comic that will make up for the entire week this Wednesday…..

There will not be a bigger book this week. Batman #43 is where it’s at. Guarantee it. No way. Scott Synder and Greg Capullo introduce a new villain into Batman’s life this Wednesday, Mr. Bloom. We all know what happens when these two creative minds get together within these pages right? The villain is right there on the cover too. No cameo, little panel, a hand, no this dude is right there in plain sight. Although there are two other variants, the Mr. Bloom cover makes for an attractive collectors piece. He only graces the regular cover and not the others. A better resell with the character on the cover like that. Bottom line here, Mr. Bloom will be blooming in the aftermarket on Wednesday and thereafter. A seriously big book this week.

Comic Broker Report – November 2014

Here’s a small sampling of the comics I like this month and no I am not spending money on the insane cover price DC is asking for the Harley annual that smells like weed.

The Avengers 170,171

Looking for Ultron keys?  Scoop up these Perez Classics before it’s too late.

ssAvengers_Vol_1_171

Ultron doesn’t appear in the Avengers again until 202.

Fantastic Four 53 ( First Ulysses Klaw )

That sure looks like Klaw in the Avengers 2 trailer and he’s not the only reason to hunt down this key Black Panther book ( first Vibranium! )  The market is already wise to this one so prices are going to be high but it is a pretty safe bet.  Ya might be tempted to sell now with Marvel’s big phase 3 news but Black Panther key books are only going to rise in value  due to the broad appeal of this character.

ff 53 first u klaw

Fantastic Four 173, 174 ( First Counter-Earth )

Upcoming events from Marvel look to incorporate their own multiverse like story lines.  The High Evolutionary created one of those worlds here.

imagesff 174 first counter-earth

SUICIDE SQUAD:

Let’s get a head start on the Suicide Squad film speculation.  Here are the first appearances of some of the more obscure members:

First Multiplex

firestorm 2 first multiplex

First Mindboggler

I cannot believe how many Firestorm comics are fast becoming key DC books!

firestorm 29 first mindboggler

First Jaculi

first jaculi

First Vixen

God this is an awful cover!

action 521 first vixen

Other Key Suicide Comics:  Vol.1 1,23,49

And some other last minute comics…

Spider-Man Summer Sampler 2012 ( First Carol Danvers as Captain Marvel )

Are you looking for the spot where Carol Danvers appeared as Captain Marvel for the first time?  She appeared on the cover to this freebee months before Avenging Spider-Man 9 and issue one of the regular series.

567653

Silver Surfer 44 ( First Infinity Gauntlet )

With the announcement of the Infinity War films Marvel has thrown down the gauntlet for speculators!  While others are throwing away money on comics like the Infinity War 1-6 series ( which might just prove to have no connection the films other than the title ) I’m betting on cheap back issues like this.

InvestComics Hot Picks – Single Issue – Superman Adventures 4

index

033

In the world a comic collecting we love it when a character takes the market by storm.  Though the jury is out on Livewire she definitely has a shot at becoming the next big thing in comics.  At first glace she doesn’t seem to have much going for her, like a weak origin and a first appearance in Superman Adventures 5 which is by no means a favorite amongst comic fans.  But like HQ she has a killer costume and sometimes that’s all it takes.

If her introduction into the New 52 blows fans away then look out, her small list of past appearances will see  value increase similar to early HQ appearances.

Currently Superman Adv 5 and Action 835 are hot.  With recently sales of 40 and even 100 for Superman Adv 5 no one can deny her electric rise in popularity.  Unfortunately for people who paid a lot for those comics they might be upset to learn that her image appeared first at the end of the previous issue, Superman Adventures 4!  That’s not to say that issue 5 isn’t valuable.  It is her first cover and first appearance in a narrative. It’s just not a first appearance and in comics that is often the most important thing to collect.

Comic Broker Report – Undervalued Moderns Special

The market can be slow to reflect the value of certain issues.  This can happen for many reasons.  Each month I try to give readers the opportunity to get in on a sleeper well before the market catches up.  Though I am not always right I try to select comics that are worth collecting even if you might never make a penny on the fast flip.  I have featured some of these comics in the past.  They make this list because they remain largely unknown to the collecting community.

Batman Volume 1 Issue 656

Batman_656

If you are looking for Damian Wayne’s first full appearance then here ya go!  Issue 655 along with its variant and other printings are often the ones collectors want but they only feature Batman’s son in shadows.  This issue is where we get to see the league trained badass for the first time!

Iron Man,Incredible Hulk,Nick Fury       Iron Man 2: Agents of Shield ( second appearance )

images Iron_Man_2_Agents_of_S.H.I.E.L.D.

It’s odd to me that Agent Coulson’s first appearance is so undervalued.  It’s pretty tough to find and features a character that is loved by most Marvel fans.  With Agents of SHIELD getting better with each episode I hope these two comics see significant increases in value.

Battle Scars 1,6

So if you don’t appreciate Coulson’s first actual appearance in a comic then you can pick up these two which feature his first appearance ( and named appearance ) in the regular Marvel Universe.

Th Invincible Iron Man ( 2008 ) 10,11

Ok there are a ton of these to hunt down.  Why?  Well recently the actor who voiced Iron Man’s A.I.  J.A.R.V.I.S. told us he’s playing the Vision.  This means that the A.I. that Stark created is becoming one of the most popular Avengers in the next film.  The Vision first appeared in Avengers 57 and it highly valued.  But as the film version will be bringing the Stark A.I. to life as an android,  these comics should be worth a lot more than the currently are.  Issue 10 features the first appearance of the RESCUE armor, made for Pepper Potts by Tony.  In Issue 11 we learn that the A.I. system in her armor is the J.A.R.V.I.S intelligence!  That makes these issues the first comic appearance of the intelligence system which will become the Vision in Avengers 2.  So far the hardest issues to find are the second print for issue 10.  This us due to the first cover for RESCUE.  Issue 10 has variants, the hardest one to find being the secret retailer variant.  The only way to tell is a barcode variation pictured above!

Elektra Assassin 2

Ok I admit I am a huge Bill Paxton fan.

Once we learned that his character on A.O.S. was secretly a Hydra agent this book should have seen some market action.  It has a wonderful cover and is written by an industry great.

Action Comics 471

index

Despite many who were disappointing by the Man of Steel I have come to realize that it is a very good film.  Russel Crow actually steals it along with Zod’s top soldier Faora who first appears  in this issue of Action Comics.

Supernaturals 4

It’s still amazing to me that Groot is coming to a theater near you in August.  For a character with less that 5 pre Copper Age appearances it just seems insane that an Alien like this is being thrust into the mainstream. To my knowledge this issue is his first appearance in the modern age.  This series inserted masks into the issues and I believe the ones with the Ghost Rider mask are the hardest to find.

Chuck Norris  and the Karate Kommandos 1

First appearance of this legend is all you need to know.

Captain America 208, first appearance of Arnim Zola

If you geeked out as much as me with Zola’s incredible appearance in the Winter Soldier then I applaud your love of insanely twisted comic villains!

BEST SELLING COMIC BOOKS of this DECADE (2010-2013)

BEST SELLING COMIC BOOKS of this DECADE (2010-2013)

WalkingDead100JusticeLeagueAmerica1UncannyAvengers1from2012

We are about to take an in depth analysis of  the Best Selling Comic Books of this time period to show the state of the current comic industry and look for any trends and to answer the all important question of “Can a comic with a gigantic print run have a chance of going up in value?”.

Only 131 different comic books have sold over 100,000 copies so far this decade.

Only 6 comics have sold over 200,000 in the past 40 months – a rare feat in the current comic economy.    In the same 40 month time period 50 years ago (1960 to early 1963) at least 1,200 different comics reached that sales figure !

The current biggest print runs either come with a new #1 series beginning, multiple covers, highlight of a storyline such as a 1st appearance or Death of a major character.

Walking Dead #100 is the best selling comic of this decade.  This super impressive for a number of reasons.  Its not a #1, its not a Marvel/DC title, its not a 1st appearance and its not even a superhero title.   Walking Dead is a sensation due to the huge interest in the TV show it ranks #1 mainly due to increasing demand for the title but primarily due to a large amount of variant covers which every Deadhead seemed to want.    Also impressive that Image has no other comics ever selling numbers that large and also the fact that no past issue of The Walking Dead had ever sold more than 80,000 copies before.

On the chart you will see its overall ranking followed by its monthly rank at Diamond when it was published.

Issue # is followed by original cover price and publisher and print run numbers.   Year and Month

I took current price values from 2 major online comic dealers – Mycomicshop.com and MileHighComics.com

I’ve had the debate so many times about whether its ever worth stockpiling new #1 issues when they have such massive print runs.  Surely these are not a good investment.  The majority of comics don’t go up in value in the first place nevermind an overprinted comic.

So here we will find out if this is true or not issue by issue.

First of all I am not here to advertise for either online comic dealer but wanted to show 2 prices to show how one dealer prices their books differently than the next.   Comics are worth whatever you want to pay.   MileHighComics are consistently much higher yet they often have up to 50% sales of their entire website inventory.

The one driving factor that makes books valuable is QUALITY.  Some titles offer an exciting storyline with amazing artwork. They may have a big influence in the superhero universe which makes these books historically important in the timeline chronology of the specific hero and their universe overall.  This helps keep demand up in the future and certain books will prove over time to be very important.    When this happens we find that the books do in fact sell out and increase.

Just because a book has a massive print run does NOT mean that it cannot sell out.  Comics values are all based on supply and demand.  A perfect example of this is the death of Peter Parker in Amazing Spider-man #700.  Not only the biggest print run of any Spider-man comic this decade but also historically important in his timeline which helped sell  the book out, go up in value instantly, and have 4 printings.

Does this mean then that all comics with high print runs must be important.   Definitely not !    There are still many books on the list which due to large print runs never sold out and stores were stuck with extra copies as they over estimated what they could sell and therefore the books may have even landed up in the $1.00 clearance bin.   You will see numerous books on the list that are still worth cover price.

Let’s just analyze the Top 10 best selling comics of the decade based on their price increase or no-increase.

Out of the top 10 we find Walking Dead, Justice League, Uncanny Avengers, Guardians, Avengers VS X-men 6, Avengers all hovering near the cover price.   That is 6 of the top 10 which shows in this instance that 40% of the top 10 actually sold out quick and had huge price gains:   Avengers VS X-men 1, Amazing Spider-man 700, Batman 1, Superior Spider-man 1.

In the top 20 the only books to show increases are Action 1, Avengers VS X-men 3 and 4.

So out of the top 20 only 7 have really gone up and 13 have not.

So which publishers have had the most succcess with big print runs:

Over 300,000 = Image 1 / DC 1 / Marvel 1
Over 200,000 = Image 1 / DC 1 / Marvel 4
Over 175,000 = Image 1 / DC 4 / Marvel 13
Over 150,000 = Image 1 / DC 13 / Marvel 22

It would appear that Marvel really is the top publisher based on the best selling and hyped up comics.

However out of the 131 comics to reach sales of 100,000 DC is actually in the lead.

Thanks to the New 52 re-launch of titles DC has 71 of the 131 titles which is more than half the entire list.

Marvel is close with 58 titles and Image sneaks in with 2 major hyped up books.  No other publishers make the list.

DIGGLE/DANIEL to take over ACTION COMICS

Writer Andy Diggle and artist Tony Daniel will be taking over ACTION COMICS as of issue 18. Current writer Grant Morrison will be leaving, presumably to work on the recently touted and long awaited MULTIVERSITY, with Frank Quitely and the Charlton heroes on the first arc.  The Promo art features Superman in the black uniform, which appears to be his same new 52 Kryptonian armor/body suit, which has the ability to change color and design. It was also seen in ACTION COMCIS #0, when a fully grown Superman was shown to somehow be on Krypton at the asme time as infant Kal-El. Superboy was also seen on Krypton in SUPERGIRL #0, so maybe Diggle and Daniel’s run will include that story.

Here’s the release from DC’s Blog page.

Next spring, ACTION COMICS will come to you from an all-new creative team. Beginning with issue #18, writer Andy Diggle (THE LOSERS; GREEN ARROW: YEAR ONE) and artist Tony Daniel (DETECTIVE COMICS; JUSTICE LEAGUE) will be bringing you the Man of Steel’s adventures in the acclaimed series.

“I’ve always had a positive experience working with DC Comics, and it’s amazing to be welcomed back into the fold in such fine style,” Diggle told THE SOURCE. “Even in an industry dominated by superheroes, Superman is THE superhero – the original and best – and I’m flattered, daunted and inspired in equal measure at being given the opportunity to build on such an incredible and historic legacy. The word ‘iconic’ is bandied around a lot in comics, but Superman defines the term. I’m excited to be working with Tony Daniel, whose artistic and storytelling skills will be bringing the world(s) of Superman to stunning visual life. Together we’ll be carving out spectacular new adventures that respect the past while redefining the future of the Man of Steel.”

“First, let me say that I am really excited to be working with Andy Diggle on ACTION COMICS,” continued Daniel. “Superman is a character I’ve wanted to work on for quite a while now and I’m now very fortunate to be given this tremendous opportunity to work with such an iconic character. I look forward to drawing each and every character in Superman’s universe. I anticipate this being a fun ride for me and hopefully for Superman fans as well. I can’t wait to get Andy’s first script and sharpening my pencils! Thank you everyone for your support of my work on BATMAN and DETECTIVE COMICS over the years. I already miss the Dark Knight, but I look forward to starting anew with the Man of Steel in ACTION COMICS. I hope to see you all in Metropolis!”

ACTION COMICS #18 is due out in March.

WONDER WOMAN gets a new origin, ACTION COMICS gets a new artist (for 2 issues)

In DC COMICS-THE NEW 52, Wonder Woman will have a new origin, in which she is the daughter of Hippolyta … and Zeus! In recent interviews, writer Brian Azzarello and artist Cliff Chiang have teased that readers should expect the unexpected in this edgier, horror take on the superhero genre and the king of the gods will ensure that nothing goes as planned for his defiant daughter.

Originally created by the goddess Aphrodite and raised to perfection on the Amazon island of Themiscyra, the newest incarnation of Wonder Woman has a new costume and now a new origin but she remains Wonder Woman. Strong. Proud. Fearless. WONDER WOMAN is the 12th title in DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 to sell more than a 100K copies.

DC also announced that Andy Kubert will be doing a two-issue sting (filling in for regular artist Rags morales) on Action Comics #5 & #6. They also teased at least an appearance by Krypto. This makes me happy.

Andy had this to share with readers:

“When Editor Matt Idelson asked if I would be interested and/or able to fit into my schedule two upcoming issues of Action Comics with Grant, I couldn’t say no,” said Kubert. “I don’t know of any other artist that would have. Drawing the latest incarnation of Superman and working with one of the best writers on the planet made it a very easy decision for me. And in this story, I get to do some VERY iconic stuff! I gotta admit, I’m a little nervous… Fun Fact for those keeping score: I had never drawn Superman in a comics interior for an entire issue. I had done inking over Dan Jurgens and Jerry Ordway for an issue each over their beautiful pencils way (and I mean WAY) back when but this is my first opportunity to pencil the Man of Steel interior pages for my very own!”

DC #1s for the SUPER-family, SUICIDE SQUAD, and BLUE BEETLE.

DC has announced some more #1s (are there any more? I dunno) Including the SUPERMAN family books,  with two decidedly different takes on the Man of Steel by Perez and Morrison/Morales, A new SUICIDE SQUAD with some decidedly different takes on KING SHARK, DEADHSOT, and HARLEY QUINN, and a one title that has this IC reporter in a quandry…I LOVE Tony Bedard’s writing (and he’s a good guy), but we all know I’m a TED KORD guy. Well, Tony Bedard is writing the new BLUE BEETLE ongoing…and it’s Jaime Reyes as Beetle. Now, when I expressed my mixed feelings on facebook, Tony graciously thanked me for my compliments to him, and simply asked that I “…give Jaime a chance.”

So, we’ll see. But I still miss you, Ted!

A new era of DC Comics begins as the longest-running monthly comic of all time releases its first issue #1 since 1938.

This September, New York Times bestselling writer Grant Morrison (ALL-STAR SUPERMAN) joins with sensational artist Rags Morales to bring you tales of The Man of Tomorrow unlike any you’ve ever read before in ACTION COMICS #1. This momentous first issue will set in motion the history of the DC Universe as Superman defends a world that doesn’t trust their first Super Hero.

The first Action Comics #1 is now the most sought-after comic book of all time. This September, one of comics’ most imaginative storytellers will make history again in Grant Morrison and Rags Morales’ ACTION COMICS #1.

Supergirl’s got the unpredictable behavior of a teenager, the same powers as Superman and none of his affection for the people of Earth. Writers Michael Green and Mike Johnson (Smallville, SUPERMAN/BATMAN) will team up with artist Mahmud Asrar to give a new take on the teenager from Krypton in SUPERGIRL #1.

They thought he was just a failed experiment, grown from a combination of Kryptonian and human DNA. But when the scope of his stunning powers was revealed, he became a deadly weapon. SUPERBOY #1 will be written by Scott Lobdell with art by R.B. Silva and Rob Lean.

It’s not easy being Jaime Reyes. He has to deal with high school, family and all the drama that comes with being a teenager. Also, he’s linked to a powerful scarab created by an alien race who seek to subjugate planets – or annihilate them. It’s up to one teen hero to turn this instrument of destruction into a force for good in BLUE BEETLE #1, written by Tony Bedard (GREEN LANTERN CORPS) and illustrated by Ig Guara (FLASHPOINT: GRODD OF WAR) and Ruy Jose.

The 51-page lead story by Paul Cornell, Pete Woods and Jesus Merino sees Superman return to ACTION just in time for both the conclusion of the critically-acclaimed “Black Ring” story starring Lex Luthor and the start of the next act of “Reign of Doomsday”. As a bonus, Dan Jurgens, Rags Morales, Ardian Syaf, Jamal Igle and Gary Frank are each contributing their artistic talents to special segments of this main story.

But wait, there’s more!

Action #900 will contain short comic stories by:

– Damon Lindelof & Ryan Sook
– David Goyer & Miguel Sepulveda
