Disney buys Fox Studios and fans get some of their Marvel characters that have been M.I.A. for some time now. Besides the Fantastic Four coming back, so will Wolverine. Not the old guy, not the girl, the real Wolverine we all know and love. Check out Hunt For Wolverine #1 as the beginning and the return to some normalcy to the Marvel Universe. Speaking of normal, lots and lots of variant covers to choose from here. Writer Charles Soule and artists David Marquez and Paulo Siqueira.
When Marvel set out on a 16 week, continuous Avengers storyline, many thought it would never be without a delay….somewhere. That delay never occurred and the result was nothing short of absolute praise from comic fans everywhere. Of course the naysayers and complainer’s will always be around, but for the most part, comic fans were very satisfied with the run thus far. The ‘No Surrender’ story concludes this Wednesday in Avengers #690. The issue will introduce readers to an all new Avengers team.
The Cosmic Ghost Rider trends seem to be leveling a bit. The first appearance in Thanos #13 still is sort after. With the character still in its infantile hot stage, Marvel strikes while the iron is hot. This week; Thanos Annual #1 features a narrative story from the Cosmic Ghost Rider himself regarding all of the ‘bad stuff’ Thanos has ever done. Bad, very bad Thanos. It’s safe to say this could be the most trending comic of the week. Writers; Kieron Gillen, Ryan North, Al Ewing, Christopher Hastings, Katie Cook, and Donny Cates. Artists; Frazer Irving and Katie Cook. Oh, one more thing regarding Cosmic Ghost Rider. Check out the Gabriel Hernandez Walta cover to Redneck #12. It’s a hysterical homage to the Cosmic Ghost Rider craze.
Over the years Marvel Comics have given Moon Knight fans countless origin stories on Marc Spector. Seems as though if they gave a retelling or a new angle on it, it would garner more attention to the character. Moon Knight gets another retelling or a spice up origin in Moon Knight #194. Realize one thing though. If, or when Moon Knight breaks out into his own Netflix series or film, the speculators will go nuts and the trends will hit hard on all Moon Knight issues. The first appearance in Werewolf By Night #32 will break out tremendously. Any issue of Moon Knight that resembles an origin, first appearance, a premiere issue, a number one issue, a rare variant, etc will trend big. Click right HERE and thumb through some Moon Knight comics on Ebay. Get these comics cheaper now, before the ‘big wave’ hits. You never know.

The debut of a new Star Wars character comes in the form of a comic book. Most of us saw DJ in the Last Jedi movie in December, played by Benecio Del Toro. On a personal note, I walked out of the theater after the movie and spoke about how great that DJ character was. Now Star Wars The Last Jedi – DJ Most Wanted #1 arrives this Wednesday. Possible bigger things for DJ in the future, he’s a fantastic player within the Star Wars lure. This will be his first comic book appearance. Writers Ben Acker and Ben Blacker. Artist Kev Walker.
As DC announces that Doomsday Clock will now go bi-monthly, Marvel’s Avengers still goes weekly for its third straight week of a 16 straight week turn. This week in Avengers #678, an Avenger dies? Let’s read and find out.

DC’s “New Age Heroes” continues this week. Damage #1, from a couple of weeks ago, was the first of many new heroes being introduced within their DC universe. These characters will not be from a separate universe, they’ll be put right in the middle of the existing time line. This is fantastic news because it gives the DCU a shot in the arm with new blood. This said, it’s quite possible some or none of these characters will catch on, but why not pick up the debut issues and check them out? Who knows, maybe one of these characters has a huge breakout on the popularity side, thus jacking up the speculative side. Safe bet is to buy all of the “New Age Heroes” as they release to cover your speculative bloodline. If nothing pops, so what? You were entertained with the words and pictures for 10 minutes of your life. Silencer #1 will be the offering this week from writer Dan Abnett and artists John Romita Jr./Sandra Hope. Anyone can check out a preview right HERE before you buy. Looks intense and we’re all in. Going back to Damage #1 a quick sec. If you haven’t seen already, 10 year Jason Katz started his own comic book review show. He reviews Damage #1, video in this post. Check it out. He’s awesome (proud papa speaking).

Check out the origin of Clayface in Detective Comics Annual #1. Creators; James Tynion IV, Eddy Barrows and Eber Ferreira.
New DC sci-fi comic, Motherlands #1 (Vertigo) from Simon Spurrier and Rachael Stott.
Deathstroke chooses a new path. Maybe this “hero” thing isn’t working out so well for him. Let’s see where life takes him in Deathstroke Annual #1. Writer Christopher Priest, artists Bill Sienkiewicz and Denys Cowan.
A new Swamp Thing story paying tribute to Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson; Swamp Thing Winter Special #1. Writer Tom King and artist Jason Fabok lead the way with a new story in honor of two legends. An original story from Len Wein that never made it to print, makes it here with art from Kelley Jones. Loving everything about this comic, a must for any true comic fan.

InvestComics Indie Hot Picks; Indie comics do not always show up on Ebay right way. Please check back on a regular basis, some of the smaller print indie books usually list after new comic book release day or a few days after.

Spawn #281 gave readers their first look at the new character Black Mirror. While we promoted it as the first “full” appearance, it turned out to be a cameo (last page). This Wednesday we get “Hulk #181”, the first full appearance in Spawn #282. The new hero, Black Mirror, will debut in her own comic for Image Comics. So, let the crazy speculation begin? Who will pay $20 for that amped-up cosmic Ghost Rider comic? Maybe lots of cash for that meaningless variant that came out last week? Put your big boy pants on guys/gals. Invest wisely.
Anyone reading this old enough to remember the Hasbro toy Stretch Armstrong? That was the best toy ever. This rubbery doll type thing stretched out when you pulled on its limbs. It was technological advanced for its time. Hours of fun until the curiosity got the best of you. Had to see what was underneath that skin, stretch until it breaks! Anyway, IDW debuts a comic based on the coolest toy ever; Stretch Armstrong and the Flex Fighters #1. Here’s a great little nugget, did you know that Stretch Armstrong first appeared in a comic in the New York Comic Con giveaway back in 2011’s Unit:E. Only 1000 of these were available. Probably down to 500 after everyone lost them, threw them out, ate their lunch on it, etc.
Valiant Entertainment’s hit comic Quantum & Woody hit their stride with their debut issue which included the most variant cover of all time. Check out the follow up this week; Quantum & Woody #2 with more “foil chase covers”. Writer Daniel Kibblesmith and artist Kano.
Chapterhouse Comics; Fantomah #1, Ray Fawkes and Soo Lee. Freelance #1; Andrew Wheeler and Juan Samu.
Brian Denham’s The Tremendous Trump World War T cover (Antarctic Press) and Joe Staton’s The Charlton Arrow #3 (AC Comics) both provide homage Marvel covers. They’re on point otherwise they wouldn’t be a mentioned here.
Chim Chum and the Portly Samurai #1 (American Mythology); Adrian Ropp.
Jack Hammer: Paper Hero (Action Lab); Brandon Barrows and Bill Blankenship.

InvestComics Spider-Man Checklist – Part 1 – Click Image

Writer Peter David and artist Mark Bagley bring the fan favorite clone Ben Reilly into his own on-going series; Ben Reilly: The Scarlet Spider #1. Ben Reilly has a few ‘first appearances’ to look at. Amazing Spider-Man #149 (1975) is the first Spider-Clone appearance. It also happens to be Gwen Stacy’s clone origin as well. Maybe we’ll get a Spider-Gwen clone one day and this comic will be in even more demand. Web of Spider-Man #118 (1994); First appearance as Scarlet Spider. The first appearance as Spider-Man; Sensational Spider-Man #0 (1996). That’s it, those are key Ben Reilly books. If you truly believe in this character, these are the books to own. There is a funny thing we noticed about the Mark Bagley (regular cover). Some of the solicits have Scarlet Spider with a hood on and some don’t. Is this a thing? Maybe just an update of the cover solicits (with or without the hood). Either way, maybe be on the look-out for it?

Old Man Logan ‘Wolverine’ continues revisiting his past and dealing with the present as he takes on Wendigo and The Hulk for old times sake. Old Man Logan #22, written by Jeff Lemire and art by Eric Nguyen. The cover(s) from this storyline are depicting the old comics from yesteryear behind Wolverine and we love it. Cover for Old Man Logan #22 from Andrea Sorrentino.

Buy Now-No Bidding – Graded Flash Comics $40 and Less – Click Image

DC and Dynamite Entertainment team up as Batman teams up with The Shadow this Wednesday. Writer’s Scott Snyder/Steve Orlando and artist Riley Rossmo are on the case. The two legendary comic characters reunite for the first time since a team-up stint in 1974’s Batman #259. They teamed up for the first time ever in Batman #253 (1973). Two classic books which would make for a nice addition to your collection. Batman The Shadow #1 will feature a first appearance of a new villain. More of a reason to check out this comic.

The 4 part ‘The Button’ story continues this week in Flash #21 (part 2). While we love the lenticular cover(s), we repeat, we love the lenticular cover(s), be careful of the speculative nonsense that may follow it from various sources getting on the hype train. Do not over pay for these covers. We have explained these reasons regarding variant comic book covers (special covers) throughout our Hot Picks post within the last couple of years, but in case you missed it, here it goes again. Again, we love the variant covers as much as the next fan that appreciates great art, but there is one thing a collector must keep in mind when buying the variant lenticular cover(s) coming out as part of the DC gimmick this week. The guts. If the inside of this comic has no significance within the grand scope of things for the next 2 to 5 years, then guess what? You have a pretty cover……that’s it. Again, if you like a variant cover, you should buy it, We encourage it because nice art is nice art, we get that, but do not have the thinking you are ‘investing’ or speculating on a comic that will serve any relevance in years to come. We pointed out in many of our articles to do the grading test with CGC and CBCS. If you see a nice variant cover (signed maybe too?) that is ‘rare’ and has an asking price of $150 or $300 or even $75, you should look at the top right hand corner of the graded book. Shift the eyes there. Empty? Blank? Does it say ‘Joker appearance’? ‘Harley Quinn appearance’? Well if your modern variant says only that or something similar and not ‘First appearance’ or ‘Cameo (first appearance)’, then you have been duped into the hype market. A ‘rare’ modern variant cover or a special glow in the dark/3D/lenticular comic come with the SAME guts as 10,000 other comics with a ‘regular’ cover and is basically a non-factor in the grand scheme of things. If there was a ‘rare’ modern variant/glow in the dark/lenticular of New Mutants #98, well you’re on to something. The guts have significance. The Flash #21 Lenticular cover, if it’s graded a 9.8, guess what you have, you have a neat gimmick cover that will probably state in the right hand corner; ‘The Button story begins. Jason Fabok Lenticular cover.’ (This of course is all on assuming that there is ‘no significant’ feature in this book.) As a speculator, if you’re willing to pluck down serious cash for a 9.8, then by all means do so if you think the resale value will exceed what you paid for it. If you’re looking for a collector’s piece to just hold onto, get it signed and graded yourself and enjoy it. The variant market is completely skewed right now. The horse blinders are on. Collectors of modern books must refocus. The guts, the guts matter, not just a nice cover when it comes to resale value. A nice cover will rarely sustain or outrun the first appearance book or a book of significance. Some may say, but what about the Watchmen element being thrown into the DCU right now regarding Flash #21? Isn’t that a big factor? Well yes and no. Yes for now and no for longevity. Do you really think DC will hold this Watchmen twist into its lure? Another ‘relaunch’ in 4 years perhaps? If you think this may not happen, you must be new to this sport. The guts, the guts, the guts. The end.
