InvestComics Hot Picks – New Release Comics on 9/24/14

[scrollGallery id=372]

So how did you all like the short Baltimore Comic Con video? If you missed it, here it is….

InvestComics will have a full rundown of all of the comic shows that we were a part of this past year. Quite a few! Some great highlights and very few lowlights, but there was one particular lowlight that far exceeded anything we could have imagined, but you’ll have to read the wrap-up article to see exactly what I’m talking about. It’s something that all collectors should definitely be aware of. It’s an alarmingly disappointing find and very important too. With that, like I said, the good superseded the bad by a huge margin.

Some quick DC Futures End comics to touch on….

1346858_xl2017484A new Superman will be making an appearance in Superman Futures End (2014) #1. This dude has it right with a full facemask on. No one will be mistaking him for Clark ever. I’m really digging the new look. Check it out on the cover to the right.

A good amount of copies remain for the Harley Quinn Futures End (2014) #1 issue, kind of surprising figuring how hot Harley was or is. Guess the cool down continues to occur.

There is only one sold out Futures End book this week. That goes to Catwoman Futures End (2014) #1 3D variant. Why is this?

New characters, costumes, and villains will continue to pop up in the Spider-Verse story line, so be sure to stay on top on these books. Edge of Spider-Verse (2014 Marvel) #3 will be one of those books.

New Avengers (2013 3rd Series) #24 is an extra sized issue. It features a spectacular Gabriele Dell’Otto cover with Thanos. Beautiful work. It’s also a part of Marvel’s “In Eight months – Time Runs Out” deal.

Robert Kirkman continues his onslaught of sold out comics. Can this dude do no wrong right now? Be very sure to buy Outcast (2014 Image) #4 this week. Not only because it’s one of the hottest series on the planet right now, but because this issue introduces a major player into the fold. Let’s see, a mainstay character’s first appearance in a HOT comic series by Robert Kirkman? Uh yeah, buy this. Buy this comic regardless of the slight lull in the aftermarket. When the Outcast series picks up steam regarding a television show, you’re going to wish you had the back issues. Especially an early issue with a major intro like this one coming out this week. Did I mention it’s sold out?

…And another hot comic that has the comic fandom in a bit of a tizzy these days, sold out two consecutive times before and now this week marks its third sellout in a row; Wool (2014 Cryptozoic) #3. Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray continue to bring it.

Parallel Man (2014 Future Dude) #1 will be sold out in a week, should check that out. Roche Limit (2014) #1 will without a doubt be seeing a second printing very soon. It will be sold out by Friday my speculator friends, better get on this one. It’s a space opus, very interesting story, and a new Image comic……all adding up to the possibility of something special. Buy this comic. Town Called Dragon (2014 Legendary) #1 is on the verge of a sellout status.

IDW goes with their fourth volume in the G.I. Joe series with GI Joe (2014 IDW Volume 4) #1. The Cliff Chiang cover is selling very well.

That’s is for this week. See you soon.

Invest wisely.

Carpe Diem.

InvestComics Hot Picks – New Release Comics on 9/17/14

HP91714_ICPICS (4)We’re back from the Baltimore Comic Con last week. Good show. Our man Rafael “Doc” Rosario will have an in-depth look into all of the shows that InvestComics has covered this year. Look for that article after we do one of our final shows at the New York Comic Con!

Has anyone noticed lately that Archie Comics have made it onto the InvestComics Hot Picks more often than not these days? And for good reason too. Archie Comics has brought readers Kevin Keller; the first openly gay character, zombie Archie, the death of Archie, and then Kevin Keller as the first openly gay superhero in Riverdale, and they also are bringing a new “serious/dark” imprint called Dark Circle. Each and every one of these comics not only brought readers some great material, but also a return on their investment as well. If the speculator listened to InvestComics, they would have bought and sold the aforementioned comics in a quick fashion as suggested, thus making some extra cash. I informed the readers of this column a few articles ago that the Kevin Keller #14 Variant cover (Dark Knight) was one of those comics to grab and flip. It was not only a hard variant to get a hold of, not only a fantastic homage cover to Frank Miller, but it was Kevin Keller’s first appearance as a superhero. This would mark Archie Comics’ first openly gay superhero. So is this a silly one shot story Archie will be going with? Well by the looks of it, Archie Comics is hitting full throttle here. Check out the homage cover this week on Kevin Keller (2012 Archie) #15. Yes this cover has been used so many times I have even lost count (Uncanny X-Men #141 -1981). Doesn’t matter here HP91714_ICPICS (5)though, this homage cover is SOLD OUT already. Kevin Keller and Archie Comics are hitting their stride. Best be on top of this. With their imprint Dark Circle coming too, you best be on top of that as well.

Sticking on topic for a minute here, Archie Comics releases Sonic the Hedgehog (1993- Ongoing Series) #264. This issue debuts Sonic the Werehog. Look at the awesome cover. Archie Comics is bringing it.

Marvel fans will have a new epic saga to follow this week on top of the Spider-Verse saga. This one is called “Time Runs Out”. It’s an eight month jump ahead in the Avengers title. What this means exactly I’m still a bit confused. Nonetheless, the big story begins in Avengers (2012 5th Series) #35.

A couple of debuts within the Marvel Universe maybe you’d want to check out. Daredevil (2014 4th Series) #8 has the first look at the Purple Children. Yes that’s correct, Purple Children. Then you have Kurn in Superior Spider-Man (2012) #33. Yes Kurn. I don’t make this up, I really don’t.

How about Gwen Stacy as Spider-Gwen in Edge of Spider-Verse (2014 Marvel) #2? Yes, I really really don’t make this up.

[scrollGallery id=371]

Thor God of Thunder (2012) #25 will have a bunch of very talented creators all over it in this extra sized issue. The All New X-Men (2012) #32 cover pays homage to Uncanny X-Men #139 (1980). Funny thing that Archie Comics is paying homage to a cover that appeared two issues later (Uncanny X-Men #141) this week.

Legend George Perez will debut his new series; Sirens (2014 Dynamite) #1. If you happen to be in the South Florida area on September 30th George Perez will be at Tate’s Comics in Fort Lauderdale between the hours of 5-7pm. He will be signing his new Sirens book and hanging with fans. InvestComics will be there!

Some other comics to definitely check out; Itty Bitty Bunnies in Rainbow Pixie Candy Land Save X-mas (2014) #1, Storyteller Witches (2014 Boom) #1, and Oddly Normal (2014) #1.

Invest wisely. Carpe Diem.

InvestComics Hot Picks – New Release Comics on 9/10/14

20174542017523There are no big sell outs this week to speak about, but a few books to check out nonetheless.
We’re going to keep this short and sweet this week because InvestComics is at the Baltimore Comic Con this weekend. Lots of cool photos coming out of there and right onto the InvestComics social media outlets. Be sure to Like and join all of them to get full coverage. Some pictures from the show to follow after the quick speculation picks below.

Amazing Spider-Man (2014 3rd Series) #6 showcases the inner secrets of an InvestComics’ favorite “Silk”. We like her and so should you.
The Spider-Verse will be an interesting run for Spider-Man fans. Check out Edge of Spider-Verse (2014 Marvel) #1 for a dose of Spider-Verse. If you want to find ANY of the first appearances regarding any of the Spider-Verse saga characters, look no further than the InvestComics Spider-Verse checklist right HERE.

1982018795Seeing the awesome Joe Michael Linsner at the Baltimore Comic Con prompted me to point out the release of Dawn Vampirella (2014 Dynamite) #1 this week. Mr. Linsner has been at this for quite sometime and he’s a straight up bad as*. His character Dawn first appeared in Cry For Dawn #1 (1989). Fantastic book to have in your keeper stack.

And two other number one comics to check out on the new shelf this Wednesday;
Copperhead (2014) #1 and Annihilator (2014 Legendary) #1.

That’s it for now. Invest wisely.

Check out some awesome photos taken by “The Doctor” of InvestComics Rafael “Doc” Rosario at the Baltimore Comic Con! Share them and tag #investcomics and #bcc2014.

More photos coming throughout Sunday.

Carpe Diem.

InvestComics Hot Picks – New Release Comics on 9/3/14

[scrollGallery id=369]

There are foregone conclusions in life. The one that we all try hardest to elude is death. No matter how hard we try, we all will eventually meet our ultimate demise. No way around this one folks. It’s going to happen. However, the death card- foregone conclusion does not hold water within the comic book world. Wolverine will start the ultimate conclusion to his life beginning this week in Death of Wolverine (2014) #1. The death will stir the pot a bit, but will simply not hold for the long hall. Wolverine equals money and Disney isn’t about to give that up. So what to do as a fan? Well for one; enjoy the story put forth before you. It’s probably going to be a great one! As a speculator, well there are literally about 13 variants (at last count) that stand before you. If you’re a savvy investor and stay on top of the InvestComics Hot Picks each week, you’ll know what to do exactly. If you’re a first timer here, all I can say is choose wisely. There are simply too many variants to cover, but I can tell you one thing. It will be short lived, so you better turn over the comics quick. There is one sold out variant and that one goes to the sketch Deadpool variant. That variant alone will cost you around $350. That’s a bit much. Money better spent on a nice Bronze Age first appearance someplace. It’s your money though. If you buy that $350 book, you better have a good plan to get rid of it.

DC Comics wants to out duel Marvel this week so they go back to the well with their 3D covers. There is absolutely no redeeming value to these amazingly awesome 3D comics as far as monetary value goes. It’s a passing fad and will be as big as the Bombshell covers were, or the selfie covers. Yes you get the idea. Take a pass on these if you’re thinking of a spec market spike. There will however probably be ONE or TWO that will break through to cause an aftermarket bump. A short lived gimmick will bring a few extra bucks to your pocket, so the same applies here as did the Death of Wolverine. Choose wisely. Here is a quick checklist with images of which 3D covers are headed your way.

[scrollGallery id=370]

Trinity Of Sin Phantom Stranger Futures End (2014) #1

Swamp Thing Futures End (2014) #1

Action Comics Futures End (2014) #1

Green Arrow Futures End (2014) #1

Grayson Futures End (2014) #1

Earth 2 Futures End (2014) #1

Detective Comics Futures End (2014) #1

Batwing Futures End (2014) #1

Aquaman Futures End (2014) #1

Green Lantern Futures End (2014) #1

Check out the zany/fun and Sold Out variant comic God Hates Astronauts (2014 Image) #1 this Wednesday. No more left at Diamond so you better get a copy if you think it’s a keeper. Another sold out comic hitting the shelf this week is Silent Hill Downpour Annes Story (2014) #1. Don’t look for too much on the spec side with this comic though.

Since the inception of InvestComics back in 2005 I have recommended Moon Knight countless times, everything from Werewolf by Night, Marvel Spotlight, to the Stephen Platt run and many more. All of those comics have showed some decent progress over time. I will continue to inform anyone that reads this column each week that you need to get your Moon Knight Comics in order. He will eventually come to fruition and hit the big screen. When it is announced one day, these books will explode beyond a price range that makes sense to buy for the savvy speculator. So with that, in this week’s Moon Knight (2014 5th Series) #7 fans are introduced to a new villain.

Disney based comic Figment has been selling very well. Figment (2014) #4 will reveal the origin of Dreamfinder and Figment.

Alice Cooper (2014 Dynamite) #1 will start a new ongoing series written by the amazing Joe Harris. Alice Cooper is no stranger to comics. Check out his first appearance in the Marvel title Marvel Premiere #50 (1979). Mr. Cooper had an actual hand in writing that book too. Awesome Terry Austin cover as well!

Dark Horse Comics puts together two unlikely characters; Grendel and the Shadow in Grendel vs Shadow (2014) #1. Although the Shadow is a cool teammate, Grendel is total badas*. Grendel’s first appearance was in Primer #2 (1983). A once very hot commodity way back in the day still shows signs of life on Ebay. A recent 9.6 CGC graded sold for $250. Primer #2 consistently sells on Ebay, which is a great sign. Why Grendel isn’t on the big screen yet is puzzling. If you can get your hands on one of these, do yourself a favor and do so. It’s a winner and an investment all the way.

Number One (2014 Aazurn) #1 will be a great read. Look for this one shot to sell out. A disturbing new Vertigo title will be of interest to check out; Names (2014 DC/Vertigo) #1. Ex Con (2014 Dynamite) #1, Cloaks (2014 Boom) #1, and Death Defying Dr Mirage (2014 Valiant) #1 will be worth a look as well.

Want off the wall, funny, wacky this week? Look no further than Hawkeye vs Deadpool (2014) #0. This will be a must read.

BALTIMORE, MARYLAND – January 21, 2013 – The Baltimore Comic-Con is happy to announce the return of J.M. DeMatteis, Keith Giffen, and Kevin Maguire to this year’s show, taking place the weekend of September 8-9, 2013 at the Baltimore Convention Center.DeMatteis Phantom Stranger cover

Writer J.M. DeMatteis began his career in the late-’70s working on DC Comics’ horror line of books. In 1980, he moved over to Marvel, where he worked on The Defenders and Captain America. Over the next 30 years, DeMatteis would write nearly every major character in both the DC and Marvel Universes, including Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Spider-Man, Silver Surfer, Daredevil, and Doctor Strange. DeMatteis is currently co-writing the Phantom Stranger along with Dan Didio for DC Comics.

Giffen Masters of the Universe coverKeith Giffen is a writer/artist who has worked on such titles as OMAC, Nick Fury’s Howling Commandos, T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents, and his creator-owned series, Hero Squared. Giffen is currently working on Threshold and the recently announced Masters of the Universe ongoing series for DC Comics.

Artist Kevin Maguire, who has worked with both Giffen and DeMatteis on several books, began his a career in 1987. He has Maguire Worlds Finest coverworked on such high-profile titles as Batman Confidential, Captain America, and X-Men, and he is currently working with Paul Levitz and George Perez on DC Comics’ World’s Finest, which stars the Huntress and Power Girl.

DeMatteis, Giffen, and Maguire are well-known for their run on DC Comics’ Justice League in the late ’80s, which added a humorous brand of storytelling to the superhero team dynamic and brought a lighthearted tone with fantastic humor – something different in a comic landscape that was filled with “grim and gritty” books.

“We couldn’t be happier to have these three creators reuniting once again at this year’s show,” said Marc Nathan, show promoter of the Baltimore Comic-Con. “Their appearance together at the show in 2011 was a real treat to fans who attended the show and who attended their panel. Their work in comics in the late-’80s helped to lay the groundwork for many of today’s modern characters.”

Giffen, DeMatteis, and Maguire join already announced guests: Mark Buckingham (Fables); Frank Cho (Savage Wolverine); Dave Gibbons (The Secret Service); Adam Hughes (Before Watchmen: Dr. Manhattan); Barry Kitson (Empire); Paul Levitz (World’s Finest); Mike Mignola (Hellboy In Hell); George Perez (World’s Finest); David Petersen (Mouse Guard); Chris Samnee (Daredevil); Louise Simonson (X-Factor); Walt Simonson (The Mighty Thor); Allison Sohn (sketch card artist); and Mark Waid (Indestructible Hulk).

Stan “The Man” Returns to Baltimore as 2012 Guest of Honor!

BALTIMORE, MARYLAND – May 30, 2012 – The Baltimore Comic-Con is honored to officially announce that Stan “The Man” Lee will be the returning as the Guest of Honor for the second year in a row at this year’s convention. The show will be taking place at the Baltimore Convention Center the weekend of September 8-9, 2012. Lee will only be making public appearances on Saturday, September 8, 2012, signing autographs and posing for photographs with guests in attendance of the show.

“Stan’s first appearance at the Baltimore Comic-Con was an unmitigated success last year,” said Marc Nathan, show promoter of the Baltimore Comic-Con. “Having him return for a second go-around is simply amazing and a great opportunity for those who missed him last year to meet a living legend in the comic industry!”

Known the world over as the architect of the Marvel Universe, Lee-along with Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko-co-created some of the most iconic characters of the Silver Age, including the Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, the Avengers, the X-Men, the Incredible Hulk, Thor, Daredevil, Iron Man, and Doctor Strange.

Lee began his career in comics in 1939 at the age of 16, working for Martin Goodman at Timely Comics. He made his writing debut in 1941 with a text filler story in Captain America Comics #3 and wrote his first back-up story for the title two issues later. Lee continued to write for the publisher and, at the age of 19, was installed as interim editor. With a head for business and an eye for comics, Lee graduated to become editor-in-chief and art director of the comics division.

Throughout his illustrious career, which has spanned more than 70 years, Lee has been a writer, editor, publisher, President, and Chairman at Marvel Comics. He’s made cameo appearances in 15 films based on his creations-including this summer’s record-breaking blockbuster, The Avengers.

In October of 2011, Lee joined with 1821 Comics to the start “Stan Lee’s Kids Universe,” a multimedia comic imprint whose purpose is to produce new kids material. Most recently, he co-wrote the graphic novel, Romeo and Juliet: The War – a reimagining of the classic Shakespeare tale with a sci-fi twist-which debuted at No. 7 on the New York Times best-seller list for both the hardcover and trade paperback.

“We couldn’t be happier to welcome back the biggest star in all of comics,” said Nathan. “Not only is this a real treat for us, but one for the fans planning to attend the show as well!!

In addition to his Baltimore Comic-Con appearance on Saturday, Stan will participate in the Harvey Awards on Saturday evening. Details regarding ticket pricing for autographs, photographs, and VIP packages will be released over the next few weeks.
