HOT PICKS

Okay Hot Picks time. There are certainties in life. The character Thanos is one such case. So is the fact that last Sunday InvestComics informed you guys/gals that East of West #1 is a not to miss book. Yes, listen to the Broker when he tells you about the certainties in the collectors market. It’ll do your wallet some good. So getting back to Thanos now, if you ever doubted anything in the speculation market, this one would not be the one to doubt. If you don’t own or are thinking about owning Iron Man #55, stop thinking and do it. I cannot stress enough how much Thanos is going to make an impact on the movie side of things. The best comparison to make here is actually quite simple. Thanos will be the modern day Darth Vader. I have said this before and I will keep saying it. Thanos’ impact in the theaters will directly impact the back issue market. This said, this week Thanos Rising (2013) #1 will be altering the Marvel Universe as we know it. Yes that villain Thanos is going to bring it and you better be ready. This dude is a bad ass.

…..More certainties this week; Harbinger Wars (2013) #1. This comic will be a quick sell out, so you better grab one off the shelf before they disappear.

Superior Spider-Man (2012) #7 will see the return of Cardiac. The first appearance of Cardiac came in Amazing Spider-Man #342. Want to feel old? This comic was penciled by Erik Larsen 23 years ago!! 1990….23 years ago!! Wow.

DC Comics celebrates with a special issue of Detective Comics (2011 2nd Series) #19. “Mystery of the 900!” Umm, okay.

….More certainties this week; Regular Show #1. This book will be harder to find than any other in the aftermarket for cover price after Wednesday. Yep.

So with Venom (2011 Marvel) #33 we get the ol’ homage cover thingy going. Isn’t that nice? One little thing here though. Spawn #222 a few issues ago did the same exact thing. Two comics in such close proximity of each other paying homage to Todd McFarlane’s (paid himself homage; he’s proud of himself) Amazing Spider-Man #316. Click on the collage below to see a bigger image of all 3 covers side by side. Which one do you like best?

Venom

Okay so wrapping up. How about a bunch of number one and number zero issues to look out for? Miss Fury (2013 Dynamite) #1 (Look at that cover – holy assets Batman!), Robyn Hood vs Red Riding Hood (2013 Zenescope) #1, Steam Wars (2013 Antarctic Press) #0 (interesting concept here, Star Wars theme = sold out), Tales of Fear (2013 Aazurn) #1, Unleashed (2013 Zenescope) #0, Snow Angel (2013 Dark Horse) #0, Last of Us American Dreams (2013 Dark Horse) #1, andPolarity (2013 Boom) #1.

Submission Deadline Extended for InvestComics’ ONE AND DONE Anthology to Benefit CBLDF

Submission Deadline Extended for InvestComics’ ONE AND DONE Anthology to Benefit CBLDF

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

West Palm Beach, FL – August 15, 2011 – InvestComics and the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund are proud to announce that the chance to submit your 1-page story for ONE AND DONE has been just been extended to September 16th!

We’ve received some really amazing submissions for the collection. But, a large call for an extension on the submission deadline has also come our way.” says InvestComics President Jay Katz. “Ultimately, this is about creation to benefit a worthy cause and so, if we need to extend to get even more people involved, then that’s exactly what we’re going to do.

For those who want to get involved in the project, the premise is simple enough. Create a 1-page story that ends in a death. There are no theme restrictions, so, if you want to make it funny, make it funny. Want to make it dark? Make it dark. Just please…no pornography, racism or profanity. All submissions should be sent to 1anddone@trendingpopculture.com.

Winning entries will be chosen by a committee of writers and editors. Now, remember, there is no compensation for this work, and all profits will be going to support CBLDF.

But, as an added incentive, Tate’s Comics  (Lauderhill, Florida) will be providing 10 collectible prizes to 10 lucky contributors. InvestComicsTV.com, InvestComics’ sister site, will also be featuring select creators from the anthology, helping to highlight the amazing work of these creative teams.

So, the time is now! Get creating, and keep sending in those amazing ONE AND DONE submissions!

For the latest news and updates on the anthology and for full submission guidelines, visit InvestComics.com.

FIGHT FOR YOUR FREEDOM!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
FIGHT FOR YOUR FREEDOM!
Support CBLDF With The Industry’s Greatest Creators in CBLDF LIBERTY ANNUAL 2011 from Image Comics

Berkeley, CA — 8 August 2011 — United We Stand Against Censorship! That’s the message from Image Comics, over two dozen of the industry’s greatest creators, and our friends at DC Comics and Marvel Comics, who have all banded together to deliver the greatest CBLDF benefit comic yet — CBLDF LIBERTY ANNUAL 2011!

Famed comics editor Bob Schreck, Editor-in-Chief of Legendary Comics, and Assistant Editor Greg Tumbarello view censorship as the ultimate form of bullying and have gathered an all-star team of comics creators to tell powerful stories that take a stand against censorship. CBLDF LIBERTY ANNUAL 2011 comprises 48 powerful pages of all new stories and art. The proceeds from the sale of the book benefit the ever-important First Amendment work of the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund.

Schreck declares, “It’s an honor to be asked to edit LIBERTY ANNUAL! We wanted to show the human side of what it means to be censored, and we’re elated with how many powerful and heartfelt tales were delivered. With an American facing prosecution in Canada for the comics he reads, the work that CBLDF does is more important now than ever, and the CBLDF LIBERTY ANNUAL is essential tool in the fight against censorship.”

CBLDF LIBERTY ANNUAL 2011 collects incredible contributions, including original stories by superstars J. Michael Straczynski (Superman: Earth One), Frank Quitely (All-Star Superman), J.H. Williams III (Batwoman), Steve Niles (30 days of Night), Judd Winick (Catwoman), Mark Waid (Daredevil) and Jeff Lemire (Sweet Tooth), and Carla Speed McNeil (Finder). Look for all-new tales featuring Grendel by Matt Wagner, Cowboy Ninja Viking by AJ Lieberman and Riley Rossmo, and Elephantmen by Richard Starkings and Shaky Kane. Plus: a massive and first-ever full-color story from independent comics master Craig Thompson (Blankets)! Marvel and DC Comics have stepped up to show their support, with all-new pin-ups of Batman by Dustin Nguyen, X-Men by Greg Land, Green Lantern by Ivan Reis, and the Avengers by Greg Horn! It’s all topped off by incredible covers by John Cassaday, Matt Wagner, and two variant covers by Frank Quietly: a full-color, 1 in 25 cover, and a black and white, 1 in 50 cover!

“Bob’s experience as an editor is hard to beat, and we’re proud to have him at the helm,” says CBLDF Executive Director Charles Brownstein. “Bob made a book that has something to say, without being sentimental or preachy. He’s made a comic we can all be proud of, and that will go a long way towards advancing the CBLDF’s important work.”

Image Comics Publisher Eric Stephenson says, “It should go without saying that free speech is one of our most fundamental rights as citizens of this great country. Our right to free expression is challenged on a daily basis, though, and sometimes, those challenges occur within the comics world. Without the diligence of organizations like the CBLDF, everyone in the comics community would be much worse off. There are always bullies out there trying to keep people from enjoying the rights we’re all entitled to, but thankfully there are also people willing to stand up for those rights. I’m proud that Image is able to lend a hand.

Join the fight against censorship by picking up your copy of CBLDF LIBERTY ANNUAL 2011 (AUG110415), a 48-page full color comic book benefiting the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, available from Image Comics on October 12, 2011, for $4.99.
