Sometimes it really does feel like the 90’s all over again. Not only the comic industry, but it sure looks like Marvel has taken a page from the 90’s history books. Venom is all the craze once again. Once upon a time it was Wolverine, then it was Ghost Rider, Darkhawk (for a hot minute), Punisher and of course Venom. Well, Venom is back and he’s everywhere…..again. Venom Inc. #1 has the symbiote “doubling down” on its previous host, Marvel heroes and others.  Creators involved here are Dan Slott, Mike Costa and Ryan Stegman.
The new Iron Spider (Aaron Davis) and the new Sinister Six debuted in Spider-Man #234. This week Iron Spider takes it to Miles Morales in Spider-Man #235. Looks like Miles is in for quite a fight.
Doctor Stephen Strange rocks the boat a bit (Marvel U) within the last pages of Doctor Strange #382. Our guess? It would seem as though the new Loki Sorcerer Supreme is kicking some major as* and the Doctor has to do something drastic to stop it.
Captain America faces off against the all-new Swordsman in Captain America #696. The original Swordsman first appeared in Avengers #19 (1965). It says so right on the cover too. A very silly looking dude back then, right?
Interesting story starting up from writer Sina Grace in Iceman #8; Iceman vs. Iceman part 1.

The first Batman/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles team-up brought on a lot of interest, buyers, readers. So what worked before has to work once more. That’s usually the thinking of a good sale. This week the return of this odd team-up; Batman/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II #1. This time Bane winds up in New York and, well….Batman and the Turtles will take their fight to New York to get Bane out of there. Creators James Tynion IV and Freddie E. Williams II.
DC Universe Holiday Special 2017 #1 is a who’s who in the comic industry. So many great creators lending their hand in making this holiday special. Too many to list here. One mention of importance is the “return” of legendary writer Denny O’Neil. Denny will write an original Batman story in this special. Incidentally, Denny O’Neil’s last original work dates back to 2010’s Detective Comics #866. Accompanied by a ridiculously cool Walt Simonson cover. Welcome back Denny!
A new story arc beings in Deathstroke #26; The Fall Of Slade part one. Creators Christopher Priest, Carlo Pagulayan and Jason Paz.
Writer Tom King takes readers on a two-part journey regarding the on again, off again relationship of Bruce and Clark. Batman #36; Superfriends part 1, focuses on how these two heroes “inspire” one another. DC claims this story will have readers talking…..as in a buzz. The story is derived from Tom King, so you know it will be good anyway. Art by Clay Mann.
The Deadman #2 comic will play Jedi mind tricks with readers and collectors on Wednesday. All across local comic shop land, many fans will be holding the cover up to a light (a “certain light”) that will reveal a hidden message. No really, not making this up. Go into your shop on the busy Wednesday evening and watch everyone holding up the Deadman #2 comic to the light. They’ll do either one of two things, smile and say, “oh that’s cool” or they’ll frown and say, “oh wow, that’s lame.” Either way, DC will get you to do what they want, you’ll do it and that’ll create the curiosity around the book. Bring attention to it, having a few consumers putting it in their stack because it was a neat trick they’ll want to show mom or their girlfriend when they get home. Here’s a bulletin, they’re not going to care, but you do so that’s what matters most. See, the Jedi mind trick from DC this week will work…..you’ll see.

InvestComics Indie Hot Picks; Indie comics do not always show up on Ebay right way. Please check back on a regular basis, some of the smaller print indie books usually list after new comic book release day or a few days after.
Suicide Squad #1 Michael Turner & Peter Steigerwald Aspen Comics variant cover is sold out. Look for this comic to spike in the aftermarket. Please remember (message for new speculators), this is only a cover of a comic book. Nothing on the inside of this comic warrants a very high price tag. A pretty cover should not command a lot of your money. Ever. A rare variant can always be reprinted later on or maybe you can buy the poster art of the cover, don’t spend lots of money on a modern that will not pay dividends down the line. Spend that cash on a solid Bronze Age first appearance instead or wait on a new printing down the line. Please understand that we’re not saying to NOT buy variants, but be smart in what you are doing. Once the market corrects itself on the down side, these pretty covers will have no substance within the inside pages to warrant a high priced ticket. A true collector will not pay big money for a “limited” variant cover. They’ll SELL them to any potential buyers, but would not hold it as a long-term. Aspen Comics will release 12 different variant covers available to order for the first time.
Chapterhouse Publishing re-releases their free comic book day Captain Canuck,Year One #1 comic for $1.99 price tag with a new David Finch cover. It’s sold out. Creators Kalman Andrasofszky, Jay Baruchel and Marcus To.
A new team comic from Action Lab Entertainment looks like a winner. Check out The Consultant #1. Creators Jason Sterr and David Maine.

Top 5 Hot Picks #140

Every week before new comic book day, InvestComics provides our fans with the Top 5 Hot Picks for new comics coming out on Wednesday. G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #246 – The new Snake-Eyes debuts. SHE looks quite awesome and ready to kick some butt. Creators Larry Hama and Netho Diaz.
Spawn #280 – A new character is to emerge in this comic. She’s been background music for a couple of issues. Here’s the thing with this comic. There is an “exclusive limited” 666 copy variant cover by McFarlane and Mattina. It’s going for big bucks on Ebay already. If you’re a regular around these parts (InvestComics website), you’ll already know how variants are viewed around here. Here’s the quick version; variants are pretty. Some variants are expensive. Some variants are just that, expensive and pretty BUT with nothing more to give than a “rare” cover. If the expensive variant you’re purchasing has NOTHING to offer within the guts of the comic book, as in a major first appearance, a new status quo, a major costume change, etc. then guess what..? You’re essentially paying A LOT of money for a pretty cover that 665 other people will own. It will be devalued in major way when the comic book market correction hits. Heck though, if you can bounce off a copy and make yourself a few bucks, then have at it! But don’t hold onto this comic too long if you you want some serious cash for it. NOW is the time you’ll get max money on that pretty cover variant, not later. Unless of course it has the criteria I spoke about already.
Spider-Gwen #26 – Gwenom is real hot character right now, the story continues this week.
Batman Creature Of The Night #1 – A newer focus on the Batman origin. Creators Kurt Busiek and John Paul Leon.
Giantkillers #0 – New IDW series from Bart Sears, Ron Marz and Tom Raney.

Buy/Bid – Spider-Gwen #26

DC Comics will bring back a great concept book this Wednesday. A comic dedicated to up and coming creators within the industry. In 1984, I recall the New Talent Showcase #1 (1984) comic being a book I truly was looking forward to. I was curious to witness the new blood coming down the pike. The series lasted only 15 issues. Here’s a couple of things to note regarding a comic dedicated to the new talents in the industry. These are points regarding DC’s New Talent Showcase comics in general. First, back in 1984’s version of this series, DC blew all of their “new talent” out too quick. In other words, why would you put so many talents in ONE book, thus not giving the fans MORE of a new talent’s work instead? Don’t give us 10 new writers or artist in on book. Spread it out. Give us two stories with two new creative teams per book, thus making room for more comics to sell in the long run. And the series will last much longer as well. The advertising would consist of leading up to a new creative team(s) by teasing their work well before the releases of their particular story. Make sense? Instead DC will release their New Talent Showcase 2017 #1 this Wednesday with approximately four writers and six artists. Let’s spread this out guys. The second thing, back in 84, these new creators showed off ALL-NEW characters. Why not stick with this plan and wait for one or two or more to hit a chord with fans and run with it from there. It’s a great testing point to create new content for your fans and possibly make money with a new character(s). Having “new talent” draw Batman, Wonder Woman, Poison Ivy, etc. is like having a great singer on a talent show sing a Whitney Houston song. Doing an original is where talent really shines. This IS a testing book anyways isn’t it? Third, some of the “new talent” here are in fact not all that new. Yes, their library is not as extensive as others, but they do have quite a few books in their library. The actual first professional work (year) for some of these creators looks something like this, 2009, 2010, 2002, 2003, 2016 and 2005. That’s a 15-year span on one of them, that’s not a “new talent”. Neither is the one from 14 years or 12 years….ahhh! Why not make this a TRUE new talent book? It would be a super anticipated DC series for fans if the format was truly NEW TALENT. Someone wet behind the ears, fresh out of college or an undiscovered talent living in their parent’s basement. Lastly, the New Talent Showcase 2017 #1 sports a cover by Jim Lee and Scott Williams. Really?? Ugh, really? We get it, fans love this team, It’ll get eyeballs on it, but why? This makes little to no sense except the fact they’re showing no confidence in a “new talent” to get the job done and sell a comic from its cover. Come on DC, get with it. This is lame.

Buy/Bid – Super Sons Annual #1

Super Sons Annual #1 is the first met and greet between Krypto and Titus. Yes, they are dogs and hopefully we do not get the first time “real life” meeting of two dogs. That would be gross. And just in case you’re in the market for first appearances of K-9’s, Titus first appeared in Batman and Robin #2 (2011) and Krypto first appeared in Adventure Comics #210 (1955). They are spayed and neutered already too. We know this for a fact. We fact checked.
Get in on the early origin story of when Batman and Catwoman first met. It happens in Batman Annual #2. Written by Tom King and art by Lee Weeks. With a creative tandem like this, you know it’s going to be good.

A new Green Lantern epic story lines hits Hal Jordan And The Green Lantern Corps #33 this week. Check out “Twillight Of The Guardians” part one. Creators Robert Venditti and Jackson Herbert.
Sticking with the thought of a great team, Batman Creature Of The Night #1 will feature a new spin on the young Master Wayne’s struggle within. Check out a new tale that changes the way you have always thought of the death of Bruce Wayne’s parent’s and how Bruce emerges as the Batman. The emotional aspect of Bruce comes to light here. Creators Kurt Busiek and John Paul Paul Leon.
If you’re a Lobo fan, then Justice League Of America Annual #1 is right up your alley. A full length story teaming with Black Canary as secrets about Lobo are revealed. Artist Kelley Jones! And writer Steve Orlando.
DC’s new bi-monthly series; Mystik U #1 this Wednesday. Alisa Kwitney and Mike Norton. Collector’s know Zatanna’s first appearance, but her second appearance occured in Detective Comics #336 (1965).

Gwenom became an instant hit for Marvel. Now part two of Gwenom; Spider-Gwen #26. A ridiculously awesome Robbi cover too. That’ll make the Best of… this week.
A semi-popular character in the early 90’s makes his return to comics this week. Well, not really returning, but continuing where he left off in his own series at issue number fifty (1995). Darkhawk has appeared sparingly throughout the years right up to an appearance in last years Captain America Sam Wilson #11. It’s actually been a year since he was last seen, so why are we getting a new lease on life exactly? Marvel wants it, so Marvel delivers it. Darkhawk first appeared in his self-titled series; Darkhawk #1 (1991). The new Darkhawk series starts off with Darkhawk #51, with a killer David Nakayama comic cover. Anyone notice how Mr. Nakayama has been nailing some of these comic covers lately? Check out our Best Comic Covers Of The Week post each week, he makes the cut every week now. Always on point since coming onto the scene in 2001, but we’re officially on team Nakayama.

Spawn #280 Special 666 print run

Returning readers here would know we gave a heads up regarding a new character emerging from the Spawn series. It seems as though the emergence of this new Spawn character superhero is closer to appearing than before in Spawn #280. This could be the true introduction issue so keep an eye out on this. The special McFarlane/Mattina variant print run of 666 copies is blowing up on Ebay right now.
Emerging (appearing) as a definite new character this week will be the new Snake-Eyes in G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #246. SHE looks like a bad-as* and we cannot wait to read this one. Check out some of the great covers appearing on our Best Covers… coming soon.
Straight from the Ominous Press World Premiere #1 (2016) comes Giantkillers #0. All-star creative power here; Ron Marz and Bart Sears. Look for a possible sell-out here.
If the fidget spinner sticks as the final cover of the new Trump’s Titans #2, it will be the first fidget spinner cover ever!! Watch as the other speculative websites pick this up as a MUST BUY!!! We’re just messing and having some fun with the nonsense that goes on. Kind of like the Harley Quinn RARE appearance in that Scooby Doo comic everyone bought into. More nonsense.
Red Giant Productions hits fans with four new number one comics; Darchon #1, Wayward Sons #1, Katrina #1 and Markipiler #1. Mark Fischbach is a Youtube sensation with 11.5 million subs, so it’s quite obvious Red Giant is trying to hit this audience. Although this is not an innovation at all. Nothing new here. Several other comic companies have tried creating a comic book with the Youtube sensation/multiple subscriber and have come away with lack-luster results. Maybe this time will be different and fans of Mark will buy into this comic book venture and make it worth the effort.
The Trump train continues in the comic book world this week with How the Trump Stole Christmas (Antarctic Press). The Brian Denham solicit is an absolute gem here. So much so here it is, word for word. Too funny. “It might be an orange Christmas this y-WRONG! We’re going to have a gold Christmas! We have a new cover, the best cover, a cover that is…is just incredible, it’s incredibly gold. The fake news media probably won’t even report this cover, or they’ll tell you it’s orange, but you know the truth. We are going to have gold foil editions available, and it’ll be so easy to get one, believe us.” Bravo guys, bravo.
Sink from ComixTribe continues to be a hit with the fans. With last months Jock homage cover selling out and drawing even more attention to the series, Sink #3 hits this week. Sink your teeth into this hot series because everyone else has and you’re probably missing out.
Labyrinth 2017 Special #1 (Boom Studios) – Various.
Black Mask Gravetrancers #1 – M.L. Miller and James Whynot.
From Red 5, Chasing Hitler #1 and Duel Identity #1.
Sword Of Ages #1 (IDW) – Gabriel Rodriguez.

Comic Broker Report – January 2014

2014 is here and that means a lot of people have Holiday money to burn.  Now is the time to sell if your a speculator.  This mostly applies to over-hyped image books, Marvel and DC variants and comics connected to upcoming film and TV projects.

My new year’s  checklist:

10. Re-bag and board my whole collection.

9. Watch Bladerunner once each month.

8.  Buy a Lying Cat T-Shirt for the wife.

7.  Vacation to Colorado.

6.  Buy every copy of Teen Titans 44 I see under 5$

5.  Steal this,

index

4.  Build a functioning puppet.

3.  Find or knit a Tanooki Suit for my son.

2. Sell all walking Dead Comics I own

1.  Buy all Sandman comics I NEED.

 This months suggestions:

What if 33 X-Men Annual 1 ( 200 1 ),  X-Men 4

images$(KGrHqVHJEQFJGGNQ9WHBSUj6mplqw~~60_35What_If_Vol_2_33

Collecting first appearances of major villains is one thing comic aficionados love to do.  The 90’s didn’t produce a plethora of memorable characters though.  Omega Red is one that stands out.  The only problem-his first appearance, X-Men 4, was massively over-printed.  It’s still a good bet long term if you can get the newsstand edition graded 9.8 or better.  Funny thing though-he also appearance in these other two comics in the same month. Look to find newsstand editions of them as well.

Marvel Age 97

Marvel_Age_Vol_1_97

I’m not sure if you know this but there is a secret legion of Darkhawk fans out there. The most sought after appearances are the venom issues and the later issues due to low print runs.  Issue one is also prized in cgc 9.8 or better because it is believed to be his first appearance.  But it is not, this is!

Uncanny X-Men 221

index

Mentioning again…

X-Factor 5,6 have lead to speculation on the X-films of the future.  Get your copies of X-Factor 24 and Mr. Sinister’s first appearance before it’s too late!

Note:  The Mark Jeweler for this is quite rare.

Iron Man 223 ( First Blizzard )

d

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has grown with each episode and if fans can be patient it may turn out to be the cornerstone of Marvel’s Movie and TV universe.  Blizzard may be a second rate Marvel villain but his introduction on the show should spark interest in his debut.

Tales of Suspense 75 ( first appearance Sharon Carter )

15975_20060925031806_thumb

The last time I mentioned this was in regards to Batroc,  now with a possible Sharon Carter show in the works it has become a comic worth owning for multiple reasons.

47 Ronin 1-5 ( Dark Horse )

Film adaptations often lead to sales spikes in the shark infested waters of Ebay.  In this case the film stars one of the worse actors in history and has received less than stellar early reviews.  Sell em if ya got em.

Marvel Age 20

index

This issue of Marvel age predates Secret Wars 8 thus making it an earlier appearance of Spidey’s black costume on a cover.

Man of Steel 17

Superman_Man_of_Steel_Vol_1_17

Soon enough folks are going  realize that the Doomsday appearance to own is right here!

The Amazing Spider-Man 256

2378_20050928235549_large.jpg

Can a movie handle this many villains?  Adding the Puma seems like a strange idea but so was the prospect of Blade film and we know how that turned out!

Foom 2

index

Ok I cannot take any credit for this discovery but it looks like Wolverine may have appeared prior to Hulk 180 and was also created by someone else.  Marvel used this fan Magazine to poach ideas from kids using contests they created.  At this point three Marvel characters have appeared from these contests.

Marvel goes to the future (2099) and red hot past (Noir) this week, as a Marvel character is about to break out in a very Cosmic way. DC brings some past back this week too. Click into this weeks Hot Picks!

daredevilnoir1.gif

daredevilnoir11.gifDaredevil Noir #1  Marvel has a great series going here, so they’re putting all of their flagship characters into the Noir style comics. All success all the time with this series, so the problem begins when they put out the Ms. Marvel Noir comic. Watering something good down is not too far out of the realm for Marvel. If Marvel keeps to the flagships with the Noir deal, you’re good to go on a nice asset(s).

 warofkingsascension1of4.gif

War of Kings: Ascension #1 (of 4)  Darkhawk has been featured a few times in the past few weeks. The number one issue from 1991 should be in your collection by now. If it’s not, you’re going to miss a good deal here. Darkhawk is about to break out in a very huge way. Marvel is about to make Darkhawk a colossal force in the cosmic universe. Why are they choosing Darkhawk you ask? Well why not?

darkreignhawkeye1of5.gif

hawkeye11983.gif

Dark Reign: Hawkeye #1  Who doesn’t like Hawkeye? He’s everyone’s favorite archer! This week brings Hawkeye to his own four issue miniseries. This is not the first time the bow and arrow dude got his own mini. Check out his very first mini from 1983. It’s a fun mini and an affordable one too.

spiderman209911992.giftimestorm200920991of4.gifTimestorm 2009/2099 #1 Back in 1992 Marvel introduced us all to the 2099 Universe. It was a fun deal. Now they bring back 2099 in 2009. Get on board with the first 2099 Universe release ever with Spider-Man 2099. If Timestorm decides to take off, you’ll have the first appearance all tucked away already.

warlord2009.gif

firstissuespecial8.jpgWarlord #1  When last year’s San Diego Con wrapped up, there was an article right here on InvestComics (it’s still on here in the Market Talk section) that spoke about this Warlord comic. So what I’m going to do is just bring you that short article right here for you to read. Sound good? Now read it and then buy it. Here’s the short snippet on from year…….Mike Grell is coming back to the DC fold. It was his imprint on the character Warlord that made the warrior stick around for 133 issues and 6 annuals starting back in the late 1970’s. In the spring of 2009 DC will be going back to Mr. Grell to create his magic once again with Warlord. Easy equation here, get Warlord’s first appearance with a pick up of First Issue Special # 8. The not so easy equation is finding a good copy of it. Warlord will be a hit once again and you do not want to miss out on this STILL affordable first appearance.

exiles1.gif

exiles12001.gifExiles #1  Marvel goes back into the archives again, this time to the year 2001. Exiles first run can be picked up for very cheap.

solomongundy2.gif

Solomon Gundy #2  Nothing that special here except that 2 villians that have been around for an extremely long time in the DC Universe meet up and fight for the first time. Who doesn’t like a good fight? It’s Gundy vs. Bizzaro. Ding ding, Gundy wins! (It’s his comic, he should win right?)

wolverineweaponx.gif

Wolverine Weapon X #1  Might be a bunch of the same old, but be prepared for this comic to sell out quickly. Fans love Logan. Maybe waiting on the Deadpool Weapon XI # 1 is going to be the better deal. No it’s not planned yet, but it will be.

allnewsavageshehulk1of4.gif

All New Savage She Hulk #1 (of4)  Not too sure why Marvel is doing this one. That red hair, those knee pads, the one shoulder pad……don’t think I get this one at all actually. On second thought, this has fail written all over it. I’ve been wrong before, but this looks outright silly.
