Sometimes it really does feel like the 90’s all over again. Not only the comic industry, but it sure looks like Marvel has taken a page from the 90’s history books. Venom is all the craze once again. Once upon a time it was Wolverine, then it was Ghost Rider, Darkhawk (for a hot minute), Punisher and of course Venom. Well, Venom is back and he’s everywhere…..again. Venom Inc. #1 has the symbiote “doubling down” on its previous host, Marvel heroes and others.  Creators involved here are Dan Slott, Mike Costa and Ryan Stegman.
The new Iron Spider (Aaron Davis) and the new Sinister Six debuted in Spider-Man #234. This week Iron Spider takes it to Miles Morales in Spider-Man #235. Looks like Miles is in for quite a fight.
Doctor Stephen Strange rocks the boat a bit (Marvel U) within the last pages of Doctor Strange #382. Our guess? It would seem as though the new Loki Sorcerer Supreme is kicking some major as* and the Doctor has to do something drastic to stop it.
Captain America faces off against the all-new Swordsman in Captain America #696. The original Swordsman first appeared in Avengers #19 (1965). It says so right on the cover too. A very silly looking dude back then, right?
Interesting story starting up from writer Sina Grace in Iceman #8; Iceman vs. Iceman part 1.

The first Batman/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles team-up brought on a lot of interest, buyers, readers. So what worked before has to work once more. That’s usually the thinking of a good sale. This week the return of this odd team-up; Batman/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II #1. This time Bane winds up in New York and, well….Batman and the Turtles will take their fight to New York to get Bane out of there. Creators James Tynion IV and Freddie E. Williams II.
DC Universe Holiday Special 2017 #1 is a who’s who in the comic industry. So many great creators lending their hand in making this holiday special. Too many to list here. One mention of importance is the “return” of legendary writer Denny O’Neil. Denny will write an original Batman story in this special. Incidentally, Denny O’Neil’s last original work dates back to 2010’s Detective Comics #866. Accompanied by a ridiculously cool Walt Simonson cover. Welcome back Denny!
A new story arc beings in Deathstroke #26; The Fall Of Slade part one. Creators Christopher Priest, Carlo Pagulayan and Jason Paz.
Writer Tom King takes readers on a two-part journey regarding the on again, off again relationship of Bruce and Clark. Batman #36; Superfriends part 1, focuses on how these two heroes “inspire” one another. DC claims this story will have readers talking…..as in a buzz. The story is derived from Tom King, so you know it will be good anyway. Art by Clay Mann.
The Deadman #2 comic will play Jedi mind tricks with readers and collectors on Wednesday. All across local comic shop land, many fans will be holding the cover up to a light (a “certain light”) that will reveal a hidden message. No really, not making this up. Go into your shop on the busy Wednesday evening and watch everyone holding up the Deadman #2 comic to the light. They’ll do either one of two things, smile and say, “oh that’s cool” or they’ll frown and say, “oh wow, that’s lame.” Either way, DC will get you to do what they want, you’ll do it and that’ll create the curiosity around the book. Bring attention to it, having a few consumers putting it in their stack because it was a neat trick they’ll want to show mom or their girlfriend when they get home. Here’s a bulletin, they’re not going to care, but you do so that’s what matters most. See, the Jedi mind trick from DC this week will work…..you’ll see.

InvestComics Indie Hot Picks; Indie comics do not always show up on Ebay right way. Please check back on a regular basis, some of the smaller print indie books usually list after new comic book release day or a few days after.
Suicide Squad #1 Michael Turner & Peter Steigerwald Aspen Comics variant cover is sold out. Look for this comic to spike in the aftermarket. Please remember (message for new speculators), this is only a cover of a comic book. Nothing on the inside of this comic warrants a very high price tag. A pretty cover should not command a lot of your money. Ever. A rare variant can always be reprinted later on or maybe you can buy the poster art of the cover, don’t spend lots of money on a modern that will not pay dividends down the line. Spend that cash on a solid Bronze Age first appearance instead or wait on a new printing down the line. Please understand that we’re not saying to NOT buy variants, but be smart in what you are doing. Once the market corrects itself on the down side, these pretty covers will have no substance within the inside pages to warrant a high priced ticket. A true collector will not pay big money for a “limited” variant cover. They’ll SELL them to any potential buyers, but would not hold it as a long-term. Aspen Comics will release 12 different variant covers available to order for the first time.
Chapterhouse Publishing re-releases their free comic book day Captain Canuck,Year One #1 comic for $1.99 price tag with a new David Finch cover. It’s sold out. Creators Kalman Andrasofszky, Jay Baruchel and Marcus To.
A new team comic from Action Lab Entertainment looks like a winner. Check out The Consultant #1. Creators Jason Sterr and David Maine.

Promoter of Connecticut ComiConn

InvestComics was granted press access to the Connecticut ComiCONN on August 15th-17th 2014. We are excited to attend this creator/star studded show. We caught up with the promoter Mitchell Hallock. Mitchell gave us a few minutes out of his busy schedule and we appreciate it!

Be sure to check out the Connecticut ComiCONN Facebook page right HERE for the latest additions to this already packed show. And go to the website to purchase tickets right HERE.

Jay Katz: The Connecticut ComiCONN this year looks like a big one. We’ll get into who’s going to be there in a minute, but how did you aspire to promote a comic book show?

ConneticutComiConn (2)Mitchell Hallock: It’s actually quite simple — I have loved comics since my Dad gave me my first Batman book when I was 4, that was 43 years ago! I was in love with them from the start. Gathered up about 25,000 over the years and would seek out any con around, but there was the problem. The last good size con in Connecticut was the early 1980s. So when the thought of doing a new and bigger one came around — it began anew. From 1 day hotel shows in 2010, to our new 3 day arena show this August 15-17 at the Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport, CT.

(JK): How long has ComiCONN been around?

(MH): May 15, 2010 was the very first show at the North Haven Holiday Inn. So this will be our 5th annual show this year.

(JK): Did you ever dream it would be as large as it is? And what one guest(s) would you love to have at the show that you have yet to land?

(MH): Yes, I actually did see it growing. The proof was during Hurricane Irene in 2011, when more than 1200 fans braved a storm, closed highways, ferry and train and made it to the show. I said imagine if the weather was good….since then it has been and the crowds went from 3,000 to 6,000 for the 1 day event every August at a hotel.
My dream guest would be Harrison Ford – but that would never happen in a million years. The other one closer to reality is Stan Lee… so I better hurry up!

ConneticutComiConn (3)(JK): Speaking of guest! Who are some of your guest of honor?

(MH): This year we have several great guests filling that role – the art legends of George Perez, Neal Adams and a newcomer — David Finch fresh off the DC Comic hit book “Forever Evil”. We will also have greats like Jose Luis Garcia Lopez, Klaus Janson, Denny O’Neil, Keith Giffen and others. As we are staying true to the idea of a con about “COMICS”.

(JK): The show is in August, can we expect to see more names added to this list?

(MH): Oh yes, I don’t want to show all my surprises too early. There are more comic greats coming to the show – artists mostly. And I have thrown in a few media guests like the Greatest American Hero, actor, William Katt and from The movies The Crow and Ghostbusters , Ray Park, Nicholas Brendon, SHIELD/HYDRA Agent Jasper Sitwell – or rather the actor who plays him on TV and the marvel movies – Maximiliano Hernandez. As we speak I am talking with a few other big comic actors. So stay tuned.

(JK): Do you encourage cosplayer’s to attend?

ConneticutComiConn (1)(MH): Absolutely! That has always been a HUGE [part of our show – kids and adults love seeing their costumed heroes in the flesh and the cosplayers NEVER disappoint! From 66 Batman to the modern Dark Knight, Poison Ivy to Mr. T, Iron Man to the Fantastic Four I have seen some amazing cosplayers and I cannot wait to see this year’s!

(JK): What is the one takeaway you hope visitors take with them after they leave your show?

(MH): That they had one hell of a great time at a great price — it’s all about value – this is not a “big city” wait in line all day show – or a money grab – it’s about getting together with like-minded friends, creators and fans and all sharing in the love of COMICS! ’nuff said!

Thank you Mitchell. InvestComics will see you there!

Go now to the Connecticut ComiCONN website now to purchase tickets!

Welcome to the InvestComics Comic Hot Picks for comic releases on 7-25-12

Back to regular business after a 3 part Dark Knight Hot Picks special last week. Let’s get right into this week!

Michael Avon Oeming and Brain Michael Bendis first released their much beloved Image Comics Powers series in 2000. Now the powers that be (pun intended) have taken this series to its first new spinoff number one issue. Powers FBI #1. Not so much a spinoff actually, but a new title name. Either way this is quite awesome for all comic book fans and they should eat this up. Expect sellouts quickly. The Powers #1 from 2000 will cost only $12 to buy, not a bad deal at all.

Desconsecrator is causing all sorts of havoc within the pages of The Mighty Thor #17 this week. Catch this characters first appearance two issues prior in The Mighty Thor #15.

….and wrapping up Marvel here, the newest X-book X-Treme X-Men #1 debuts.

DC’s Flash #11 re-introduces fans to Heat Wave. Heat Wave first appeared within the pages of the Flash #140 back in 1963. The legend Carmine Infantino graces us with the cover to this beauty. A cool $300 gets you this first appearance.

Fans find out secret origin of Pozhar in The Fury of Firestorm: The Nuclear Men #11 this week. Check out Pozhar’s debut in The Fury of Firestorm #62 from 1987. The wonderful talents of John Ostrander (writer) and the late great Dick Giordano (inks) are on this comic for only $3.

Kid Eternity returns this week. National Comics Eternity #1 (what’s with the title?). If you’re in the market for a first “slow trending” first appearance comic, this would be the one. Hit Comics #25 from 1942 will hit your wallet for only $2000. A first appearance of a character from 1942 for only $2000? It’s not like we all don’t know who Kid Eternity is, apparently not much of a demand for the Kid. And indecently, the first post crisis Kid Eternity appears in Kid Eternity #1 from 1991. You could probably find this comic (along with The Fury of Firestorm #62) hiding out in some one dollar boxes at your local comic shop.

Batman Incorporated #3 debuts the New 52 Matches Malone. Find his first appearance in a backup story from Denny O’Neil in Batman #242 (1972). A $100 comic and a nice buy here.

…And staying on the backup story theme here, All-Star Western #11 introduces Terrence 13 in a backup.

Superman #11 introduces fans to some sort of new alien that will be a thorn in his side for a few issues.

The Savage Hawkman #11 Introduces a villain named St. Bastion.

Image Comics’ Superman; Supreme is making a little bit of noise with his comeback. Supreme #66 comes out this week and his first appearance is in the overprinted 25 cent bins Youngblood #3 (1992). Rob Liefeld all over this comic…

Also from Image this week a new number one issue to check out; Debris #1.

Looks like Boom! Studios will try out a “Spider-Man” “Invincible” type of genre with Michael Midas Champion #1. Check it out to see if they nail it.

Mad Magazine Batman collects all of the craziness of their Batman stories in a special. If you’re a Mad fan this is for you. If you’re not a Mad fans, well you’re missing out.

Be sure to scroll through the covers of the week below!

That’s it for this week! See you next Sunday with an all new InvestComics Comic Hot Picks!

Invest wisely.
