Each week InvestComics seeks out a comic(s) on Ebay for $100 or less and then brings it to the attention of our fans. We call it IC 100 Club Pick. The idea is to get a great book at a great price. We do not own nor are we selling these comics. The comics are found by a random process. We do not know the ebay seller(s), nor are we promoting the Ebay seller. Any knowing from the Ebay seller of InvestComics or its affiliates is purely coincidental. (See disclaimer for more details).

IC 100 Club Pick: X-Men #10 (1965) graded 4.5. This is the first Silver Age appearance of Ka-Zar. Although it’s a lower grade, the price is right for this Silver Age beauty. Priced at only $98.99 with free shipping. Jack ‘King’ Kirby art and cover. Stan Lee writes. An absolutely great Silver Age book for $98.99.

Here’s some Marvel Civil War stuff;
Marvel’s Civil War II #3 is labeled ‘Classified!’ We need to read it now. What’s going to happen within these pages that Marvel is so secretive about? C’mon Wednesday, get here!
And speaking of secrets, Civil War II Amazing Spider-Man #2 will reveal a person to turn on Peter that he’d never expect. Who will it be?
Civil War II Gods Of War #2 will introduce the team; Gods Of War.

The InvestComics Hot Pick of the week goes to DC’s New Super-Man #1. Many fanboys cannot wrap their heads around the fact that Super-Man is an Asian character in this series. The ridiculous notion that fanboys actually think their opinions matter is comedic onto itself, but some of the uproar shows how far off some of the actual thinking is from fanboy comic fans. Adult comic fans accept the change and or just go with the flow. They’ll give it a shot, they like it, they like it, they don’t, they don’t. Some fans need to booster up a bit and try new things once in a while and stop judging a book by its cover, or in this case; race. Which is even worse.

This total new take on “Super-Man” is a refreshing one. Buy this comic and give it a shot. Writer Gene Luen Yang and artist Viktor Bogdanovic are the creators and that in itself is enough to make us want to give this comic a try.

DC’s successful Rebirth line continues. It’s such a hit that many comic book stores are limiting their customers to one one copy each. Here are two to look out for this week. Hal Jordan And The Green Lantern Corps Rebirth #1 will bring back fan favorite Ethan Van Sciver to a Green Lantern title. Nightwing Rebirth #1; creators Tim Seeley (art) and Yanick Paquette (writer) are going to be responsible for making Nightwing a major part of the DC Universe once again. The Babs Tarr variant will be a sold out comic.

Any new Image comic proves to be a great story. Horizon #1 is no exception. Follow the story of Zhia Malen, her first appearance, and the invasion of her planet…..from planet earth.

Sabrina #6 from Archie Comics will give us the origin of Salem. Yes, the cat! Awesome!
Best selling author Sarah Fine starts on her 4 issue series; Reliquary Mayhem & Magic #1, from Jet City Comics.
Aspen Entertainment readers get ready for Aspen Universe Revelations #1! This comic will start the new look Aspen Universe and combine all of their characters. It’s Marvel NOW! And DC Rebirth, but from Aspen Entertainment.

Hold on folks, here come the DC Rebirth books. Be on the look out for first appearances. It only takes ONE to breakout and cause quite a stir in the aftermarket. Be on top of these good stories as DC breaths new life into their Rebirth era. Here are some highlights; Green Lanterns Rebirth #1 puts writer Geoff Johns back with artist Ethan Van Sciver on a Green Lantern book. These two make Lantern poetry together. “Newer” Green Lanterns Jessica Cruz (first appearance in Justice League #30 – 2014) and Simon Baz (First appearance was in The New 52 FCBD Special Edition #1 – 2012. First origin was in Green Lantern #0 – 2012) lead the charge here.

A mega four issue comic crossover happens all in one comic this week. Where you ask? Only one comic could pull this off, Deadpool #13. Duh! That Khoi Pham variant cover though…….
Marvel’s Civil War II officially gets under way this week. Civil War II #1 is solicited as “CLASSIFIED”. More of the same with Invincible Iron Man #10. Boy we hate that. Now we have to wait another week before finding out what is so “classified”. The Rafael Alburquerque hip hop cover is dope though. We’ll just stare at that until Wednesday’s new comic book day.

It’s been a fantastic start of the week for InvestComics. That’s if Saturday and not Sunday is counted as the first day of the week on your calendar. For me, I’m counting Saturday as the first day because of the great things that happened and are on the horizon!

InvestComics Publications received the last shipment (First printing) of our first ever publications comic ‘The Dawning #1’. Look for an InvestComics Newsletter coming in your inbox to be the first to snag a copy! Palm ConSaturday InvestComics visited an old friend with a dream and a passion coming to life for him. Martin Pierro of Cosmic Times Publications has done something that has been sorely missed in the West Palm Beach Florida area for quite some time. He started a comic convention appropriately named ‘Palm Con’ 3 years ago. The first 2 years were held in the American Polish Club in Lake Worth Florida. The show quickly outgrew the space needed in the first year, forcing to rent more space the second year, and now this year the show resided in the West Palm Beach Convention Center! Yes Martin is on to something here. In speaking with Martin for the brief few minutes we had at the show (he was a runnin’), you can see and feel the tenseness of the hard work he put into this show. He’s worked hard for this and it shows. In speaking with Andra Walt (mama), one can hear the proudness ooze off of every word, and justly so. Martin Pierro’s Palm Con has arrived.

InvestComics was invited to the event and came out with a few pictures and some video. Those will come out in the days to come. Overall the show had a nice crowd and people were really enjoying themselves. The guest list included Ethan Van Sciver, Deep Roy, Brutus the Barber Beefcake, Allen Bellman, Jose Delbo, Carlos Castellanos, Jeff Dekal, Jessis Melero, Vinnie Tartamella, Creature Entertainment, and a host of others.

As already said, Martin Pierro is obviously on to something here. The West Palm Beach area was in dire need of some sort of comic book entertainment forum and Martin will provide this to the genre for years to come. I personally am very proud of him and look forward to the years ahead. Thanks for the invite Palm Con, I had a blast!

There will be some more news on the horizon from InvestComics, so sit tight. It’s very exciting, but cannot speak about anything until confirmation comes in. Such a tease right?

Let’s head into the DC 3D books for this week. Seems like forever now with these books no? How’s that saying go? Too much of a good thing is bad for you?  Well what seemed to be a fun idea is starting to run its course. The 3D covers are nice and all, but the 90’s are calling and they want real comic book covers back.

As InvestComics has done for the collectors each week regarding the 3D covers, we will present the comic and the first appearance of the villain takeover of that particular book. As the weeks pass, it looks as though the field is getting very thinned out. But this shouldn’t deter the collector, it only takes that ONE book to hit and you have chaos within the aftermarket. Be smart about which books to pick up as far as the speculation market goes, the story and the actual character (and print run sometimes) is what causes “that” particular comic to uptick. Not because of a pretty cover.

Wonder Woman (2011 4th Series) #23.2 – Wonder Woman never really had the rouge gallery that stood out from most, and this week it’s a case in point with ‘First Born’ taking over the WW book. First Born debuted in Wonder Woman #12 (New 52).

Action Comics (2011 2nd Series) #23.4 – Metallo, another forgettable character takes on Superman in this takeover. Metallo makes his first appearance in Action Comics #252 (1959). Cover by Curt Swan.

Superman (2011 3rd Series) #23.4 – Staying with the Superman talk we have another one of those huh? Characters. The much bigger purple blob thing names ‘Parasite’ visits Supes. Back in 1966’s Action Comics #340, Parasite wasn’t on the roids yet and wore green shorts. The big question is will Parasite wear his green shorts in the new Superman Parasite book?? The tension mounts!

Aquaman (2011 5th Series) #23.2 – Moving right along here, Ocean Master, yes Ocean Master will give Aquaman his problems in his own book this week. Ocean Master. Okay, just like saying that for some reason. OM first appeared in Aquaman #29 (1966). All joking aside, maybe OM will be Aquaman’s nemesis in a film or television show one day. Image that…?

Justice League (2011) #23.4 – The ultra-cool Secret-Society will have the rights to the new JL book this week. Look for Secret Society of Super-Villains #1 from 1976 for their first appearance.

Batman (2011 2nd Series) #23.4 – One of four Batman titles coming out this week. Overkill? Anyway, one of Batman’s biggest adversaries to ever come along after Bats was introduced all of those many moons ago was Bane. Just like Spidey had Venom, Bats has Bane. Not saying that the rest of their rouge galleries are a weak one, but to have a villain come out of the modern era and make such an impact like they have is a big deal. Bane has already been covered in two Batman films. Now granted the first one doesn’t really count, but it did happen and that accounts for something. It wasn’t until the second go around that Bane became the total bad as* that the character should have portrayed. The villain was spot on in The Dark Knight Rises, a fantastic film and a fantastic villain. Do yourself a favor, if you do not already own the first appearance of Bane in Bane: Vengeance of Bane Special #1 (1993), you need to. Although a big print run keeps the cost down a bit, it’s still a wonderful book to have.

Justice League Of America Vol 3 #7.4 – Just like the aforementioned, Black Adam is a total bad as*. This dude needs to appear in a film, stat! Check out Adam’s debut in Marvel’s Family #1 from 1945 (Fawcett Comics).

Batman and Robin (2011 2nd Series) #23.4 – DC’s answer to Marvel’s Lizard came some 20 years later in 1983’s Detective Comics #523. Look for Killer Croc’s debut here.

Green Lantern (2011 4th Series) #23.4 – Too bad the Green Lantern didn’t get as much love as it did. Fans were not at all pleased with the film as box office numbers would show. Sinestro however will remain a main staple in the GL gallery. Look carefully through Green Lantern #7 (1961) and there you will see Sinestro’s first appearance.

Batman Superman (2013 DC) #3.1 – Speaking of movies fans are not receptive to, the new Superman/Batman movie seems to be getting dumped on because of the actor choice Ben Affleck playing Batman. Don’t forget that InvestComics supports Ben as Batman on the Facebook page: ‘Affleck as Batman – I’m On Team Ben’. Click HERE to join the crusade against the naysayers! Any who, within this takeover issue we have the only “thing” to ever “unofficially” kill Superman. Doomsday first appeared in Superman: Man of Steel #17 (1992). Just like Bane and Venom for their respective rouge galleries, Doomsday has become “that villain” within the Superman gallery. A late, modern introduction that has caught on and never let go. Doomsday in the Superman/Batman movie? Hey you never know!

Batman The Dark Knight (2011 2nd Series) #23.4 – One of the hottest “surprise” issues to come out recently is the Catwoman #23 (New 52) book. The aftermarket went bonkers when word got out that this comic contained the first appearance of the Joker’s daughter. This week the Joker’s daughter will make here “second appearance”. Don’t miss this comic, it’s definitely a sellout book.

Detective Comics (2011 2nd Series) #23.4 – The last of the Bat books has Man-Bat gracing the 3D cover. Sometimes a simple switching of a word can create a new character! Although not a recognizable, oh my God I need to buy the issue with Man-Bat in it, it’s the first appearance that’s more appealing than anything. Check out the debut of Man-Bat in Detective Comics #400 (1970). A story drawn by legend Neal Adams and a classic cover by Neal to boot! Good stuff here.

Now…..

InvestComics Hot Picks 9-25-13

[scrollGallery id=308]

Marvel Comics debuts the new Sun-Girl in Superior Spider-Man Team Up (2013) #3. Sun-Girl is a great looking 70 year old character. Check out the first appearance from back in 1948’s Sun-Girl #1 from Timely Publications! That’s pre-Marvel folks.

Also from Marvel,  check out Infinity Heist (2013) #1 and Punisher Trial of Punisher (2013) #1. With any kind of buzz with these two comics, they will be sold out very quick.

Speaking of sold out comics, if these comics bring it, expect the aftermarket to be a buzzing. Farlaine The Goblin (2013) #1 stands right in front of this line (Interview right now on InvestComics with creator Studio Farlaine!! Click HERE!). Sold out at Diamond Distributors, get your hands on this comic if you can. Zombie Annihilation One Shot from SILVER PHOENIX ENTERTAINMENT is also sold out at the distributor level. Other Dead (2013 IDW) #1, Powerpuff Girls (2013 IDW) #1 are sold out as well.

On the cusp of second prints are Sex Criminals (2013) #1, Super (2013) #1, Rat Queens (2013 Image) #1, and Planet of the Apes Giant (2013 Boom) #1. As always mentioned here, Image Comics have been on a serious roll lately. Their products have been outstanding. Watch out for the sell outs of their comics, because interest will eventually reach the “another” medium as Hollywood will start picking off some of their stories.

DaredevilYou hear that? You hear the screams in the distance? The whining? The crumbling of the walls? The collective sigh?

The internet may have finally broken. Yes Ben Affleck will be the new Batman in the Superman vs. Batman film. The simple answer to this news? So what? The drama has gotten to such a fever pitch that there is actually a petition to sign to have Mr. Affleck removed from the film. Really?? Is this so important that it warrants this type of dramatic reaction? Everyone really needs to calm down, seriously……

With all of the negative publicity that the news has received, InvestComics has taken the “Team Ben” approach. We love the underdog! So with that comes a fun Facebook page that is called Affleck as Batman I’m with Team Ben. If you are tired of the naysayers and you support the underdog (Ben Affleck) be sure to JOIN the Facebook page that InvestComics created. Everyone can post various meme’s, articles, or just comment about their feelings about the Warner Brothers hire. Good or bad. Join by clicking right HERE. Remember, have fun! Why so serious?

On the heels of this news came the announcement of Bryan Cranston as Lex Luthor. Many of the aforementioned fans weighed in with this news as well, this time with more of a positive outlook. Bryan is said from multiple reports to have signed a 6 to 10 film deal. That’s a whole lotta Lex!

The winner of the signed Jimmy Palimiotti Fury #1 was Mike Villegas. Congratulations Mike! Be sure to sign up to the InvestComics Newsletter to find out the next contest. This one is sweet!!

This week Marvel fans are treated to an introduction in Captain America (2012 7th Series) #10. Meet Godzola! Hmm, not that keen on the name, but we shall wait and see. The possible return of Binary happens in Captain Marvel (2012 7th Series) #15. If you feel so inclined to find Binary’s very first appearance, you will find it in Uncanny X-Men #164 (1982). This is the part of the historic Chris Claremont/Dave Cockrum run. Fast forwarding some 7 years later with Chris Claremont still at the helm, Uncanny X-Men #251 (1989) strikes one of the classic X covers to date. Wolverine nailed to the X. How about this week’s Uncanny Avengers (2012 Marvel Now) #11 striking a resemblance? Marc Silvestri killed it back in 1989 and John Cassaday does a superb job this week.

Batman Incorporated Special (2013 DC) #1 variant cover by Ethan Van Sciver is sold out. It would be a good idea to try and get your hands on that if possible. Bat-Cow will also make her solo debut here! Bat-Cow’s debut was in Tiny Titans #17 (2009) in case you were wondering.

….And speaking of sold out number one issues, Overtaken (2013 Aspen) #1 is teetering on a second run soon, as is Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1 (Hundred Penny Press Edition – Cover A Dan Duncan, Quantum And Woody #1 (3rd Printing – 1st printing recommended on InvestComics Hot Picks), and Arcane Secrets #1 (recommended last week on InvestComics Hot Picks).

That’s it for this week! Be sure to stay close because this week (maybe) the NEW contest will debut. Win a modern number one comic book, Hot series, signed!! Sign up to the InvestComics Newsletter to find out first!

HOT PICKS

[scrollGallery id=238]

Okay Hot Picks time. There are certainties in life. The character Thanos is one such case. So is the fact that last Sunday InvestComics informed you guys/gals that East of West #1 is a not to miss book. Yes, listen to the Broker when he tells you about the certainties in the collectors market. It’ll do your wallet some good. So getting back to Thanos now, if you ever doubted anything in the speculation market, this one would not be the one to doubt. If you don’t own or are thinking about owning Iron Man #55, stop thinking and do it. I cannot stress enough how much Thanos is going to make an impact on the movie side of things. The best comparison to make here is actually quite simple. Thanos will be the modern day Darth Vader. I have said this before and I will keep saying it. Thanos’ impact in the theaters will directly impact the back issue market. This said, this week Thanos Rising (2013) #1 will be altering the Marvel Universe as we know it. Yes that villain Thanos is going to bring it and you better be ready. This dude is a bad ass.

…..More certainties this week; Harbinger Wars (2013) #1. This comic will be a quick sell out, so you better grab one off the shelf before they disappear.

Superior Spider-Man (2012) #7 will see the return of Cardiac. The first appearance of Cardiac came in Amazing Spider-Man #342. Want to feel old? This comic was penciled by Erik Larsen 23 years ago!! 1990….23 years ago!! Wow.

DC Comics celebrates with a special issue of Detective Comics (2011 2nd Series) #19. “Mystery of the 900!” Umm, okay.

….More certainties this week; Regular Show #1. This book will be harder to find than any other in the aftermarket for cover price after Wednesday. Yep.

So with Venom (2011 Marvel) #33 we get the ol’ homage cover thingy going. Isn’t that nice? One little thing here though. Spawn #222 a few issues ago did the same exact thing. Two comics in such close proximity of each other paying homage to Todd McFarlane’s (paid himself homage; he’s proud of himself) Amazing Spider-Man #316. Click on the collage below to see a bigger image of all 3 covers side by side. Which one do you like best?

Venom

Okay so wrapping up. How about a bunch of number one and number zero issues to look out for? Miss Fury (2013 Dynamite) #1 (Look at that cover – holy assets Batman!), Robyn Hood vs Red Riding Hood (2013 Zenescope) #1, Steam Wars (2013 Antarctic Press) #0 (interesting concept here, Star Wars theme = sold out), Tales of Fear (2013 Aazurn) #1, Unleashed (2013 Zenescope) #0, Snow Angel (2013 Dark Horse) #0, Last of Us American Dreams (2013 Dark Horse) #1, andPolarity (2013 Boom) #1.

Welcome to the InvestComics Hot Picks for new comic releases on 1-30-13.

Well the news has come out and boy is the aftermarket a’buzzing! Much thanks to Sebastian Piccione of InvestComics and the awesome video review show FFFIC on the InvestComics YouTube channel, if you followed his instructions you would have been picking up the Sixth Gun comic a long long time ago. NBC has partnered up with the creators; Cullen Bunn and Brian Hurtt to begin a pilot for them. This is great news if you’re already an owner of the Sixth Gun #1 issue from Oni Press. Why you ask? Do you really have to ask? Well here’s the scoop. On Ebay right now, a seller has 2 number one issues in VF condition no less selling for $90+!! The comics are probably well past that price point since this was as of 2 days ago. Well here’s the question to ask, do I buy? Well here’s the thing with these types of comics. I say “types” because it’s really just a hot item right now because of the announcement from NBC and the fact it may be a successful show (see Walking Dead). Now the other question comes into play, how much is too much? Well a graded copy of Walking Dead #1 sold recently for $10,000. If you’re a regular reader of this column, you’d know that as a collector I personally think that paying that much for a graded Walking Dead number one is absurdity at its finest. Zombie movies, comics, stories are not a new thing. This too shall fade away eventually, leaving that buyer that spent 10 grand on a book that will be worth a third of that in given time. The same may apply to the Sixth Gun. While a spectacular comic and story, the quick bump in the pricing market may be because of the possible outcome of the show and its future. It’s a tricky/dicey bet here to go out and buy high on this comic right now ($50+ range?). The best advice to offer here may seem like a copout, but it’s the most honest. Go with your gut on this. Here are the positives here to help you along; the story itself has never really been done before, making for a fresh take on something “new” as oppose to something “old”. It has potential for a franchise in the sense that the six guns are always to be sought after for their powers, thus making for a constant chase, thus for making for constant story, thus making for constant potential. The negatives are quite simple here. What if the story does not translate to the small screen? The pilot is a flop and you are left holding a $50+ comic in your hands with no aftermarket value. The risk is big here. $50+ is not something you want to just blow away on such uncertainty. I will leave you with one certainty however. There are only 3 CGC graded Sixth Guns #1 issues out there at the moment. If you think you may own a good 9.8 or higher grade, send it off to CGC right away. If you score a 9.8 or higher (hope hope) you will then triple your money in the aftermarket. Or you may want to hold onto it and wait for A: the market to heat up some more (which probably will) Or B: wait for the good reviews (maybe/maybe not) to come in regarding the pilot. Bottom line, go with your gut, it’s usually never wrong.

HOT PICKS

[scrollGallery id=218]

Let’s move along to the new Marvel and DC Universe’s. As said countless times here on the InvestComics Hot Picks; the best thing about the restarts/relaunch of these two companies is the influx of new heroes and villains as well as the returning/revamps of some of them. This week Marvel’s Avengers (2012 5th Series) #4 gives us the origin of Hyperion. Hyperion first appeared in the original Avengers series (1963). The issue was Avengers #69 (1969). The value here is at the $80 mark. Not too bad for a character that hasn’t really been “A rated”. Here’s a nice nugget though; only 100 total copies sit out there graded and only 5 are in the 9.8 spot. If you can muscle away a very nice non graded copy (9.8 – good luck, not an easy task), you’d be able to flip it for some decent change.

Another non- listed A rated character makes his long awaited return (who was really wanting on this guy anyway?). Dark Avengers (2012 Marvel) 2nd Series #186 sets the return of…..ready?? U.S. Agent! Okay so maybe not the biggest star in the sky, but he’s a cool dude! Check out Captain America #323 (1986) for his debut. The CGC market doesn’t really have many of these copies graded at the moment. Only 21 graded with a top heavy 6 issues in the 9.8 category. Not so bad here if you think you can score a 9.8 at $4, send it off and try to flip it by upselling it on Ebay. Not that hard of an issue to find.

X-Men Legacy #5 will introduce two new villains. Yay, more bad guys….gals. Whichever.

DC’s Flash (2011) #16 will introduce a major new villain. Good for Flash because his rouge gallery is not that impressive anyways. Justice League Dark (2011) #16 will debut a new character.

DC feels it necessary to give He-Man his own origin book this week. Masters of the Universe The Origin of He-Man (2013) #1 gives us an awesome cover though doesn’t it? If you feel like you’re in the hunting mode, look for the debut of He-Man in Masters of the Universe from Mattel (1981). Good luck finding that in NM condition.

And finally from DC, we have Batman The Dark Knight (2011 2nd Series) #16 coming out this week with debut penciler Ethan Van Sciver. We don’t have to get into how much Ethan’s pencils are boss. This guy can flat out draw. With Ethan on the new Bat book, it got me thinking of where Ethan’s earliest Batman art occurred. It brought me way back to 2001 Justice Leagues: JL? #1. What’s up with the title? Anyway, if you want Ethan’s first(?) Batman work you can probably find it hiding in a long box someplace for a buck. If you want to make a quick buck, you pair up the latest Ethan Batman with his “first Batman” and sell that on Ebay as a pair. Send me at least 7%. Thanks.

Image Comics will release Invincible (2003) #100. Expect instant sellouts on this book. More so there is a golden nugget here that will pay very high dividends if you are able to score it. With the release of the modern day Peter Parker like character comic, there will be 9 variant covers. There will be one in particular you will need to grab in order to make an almost guarantee profit. The Ryan Ottley wraparound Sketch Cover will be a cool $85 when it comes out. Look for the aftermarket to command more than the $85 you spent on it….quickly. If you feel so inclined, you may want to get it graded to make even more money. This fans is the variant to get!

On the cosmetic front we have Spawn (1992) #227 coming out. Todd McFarlane continues his very smart money grab here and continues to pay homage to various famous comic covers. Todd pays homage to himself this week with the copying of Amazing Spider-Man #300. Todd is still great and a smart business man within the comic book industry. Not so much baseball, but comics. Sorry Todd! We still love ya!

Ethan Van Sciver takes over monthly art chores on BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT

In an interview with COMICBOOK RESOURCES, Ethan Van Sciver revealed that he will be the new artist on BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT.

On their own blog, DC had this to say:

Joining New York Times bestselling writer Gregg Hurwitz, Van Sciver will make his debut on the series with issue #16, which travels into the twisted world of the Mad Hatter. In the issue, Batman discovers a trail of bodies but no leads as he realizes that this is unlike any Mad Hatter case he’s seen before.

“With Scarecrow, a lot has already been said about who is he, but not a lot has been said about the villain we’ve chosen: the Mad Hatter,” Van Sciver told COMIC BOOK RESOURCES. “It really is going to be a revelation to a lot of Batman fans who have seen this villain around for a long time but haven’t given as much thought as to what makes him tick. We’re inventing a lot of things as we go along with it.”

Who is THE FIRST LANTERN?

If you’ve read any of the GL books this past month, you’ve seen the various ringslingers of all colors confused as someone screams “LET ME OUT!” through their power rings. If you’ve read GREEN LANTERN ANNUAL #1 last week, you saw who the mysterious caller was. But, who (or what) exactly IS the FIRST LANTERN, and what part will he play in THE RISE OF THE THIRD ARMY, and the Guardians’ war on free will? Well, they dropped some cryptic hints over on the DC Bog:

“Who the First Lantern is and what his role will be in the upcoming Green Lantern universe will come into play very, very quickly,” hinted GREEN LANTERN writer Geoff Johns. “The being inside has been imprisoned there for a long, long time. The Guardians consider him their greatest threat, but also their greatest source of power. Whether he’s friend or foe will be up for debate, but regardless he is one of the potentially most dangerous beings in existence.”

“In GREEN LANTERN ANNUAL #1, readers got their first glimpse at the First Lantern, someone who’s been locked away for a very long time—for a VERY good reason!” teased editor Matt Idelson. “His presence in this story is the catalyst for something very bad, and yet his story is only going to grow from here.”

Flash gets the top billing this week and speeds back to the year 1967?? Click ahead to see why you should be time traveling to the year that brought us the birth of Pamela Anderson, Super Bowl 1, Sgt Pepper’ Lonely Heart and the greatest comic book race of all time…

flashrebirth3.gif superman199.gif

Flash Rebirth #3  Way back in 1967 the greatest comic book race took place. Legend Curt Swan did the penciling while Legend Carmine Infantino gave us that classic cover to Superman #199. This week,
superstars Geoff Johns and Ethan Van Sciver bring the timeless classic to the modern era. The race back in 67 was a fun comic and the way Geoff and Ethan are bringing it these days, this too will be fun. The Rebirth series is obliviously a Red Hot one and this particular comic will spark the interest of the original
race. Superman #199 clocks in at about $500. An awesome investment for a
classic comic.

warofkingsskaar.gif

War of Kings: Savage World of Skaar  Another week, another Skaar mention. Yes InvestComics is drinking the Skaar Kool-Aid again. What more is there to be
said about Skaar that hasn’t been already been said?   Until Skaar meets up with his daddy and settles some emo issues he’s dealing with, IC will keep the buy sign up on World War Hulk #5. Although something tells us that Skaar will have issues for a long time. Good because there is nothing better than a 12 foot child with emotional problems and a big sword!

batman687.gif

Batman #587
Well it looks like there is a new Batman in town and his name is Dick,
Dick Greyson that is. After all of the ridiculous fanfare DC ‘tried’ putting
up, the death of Batman, the battle for the Cowl, it came down to the exact
ending (for now -Bruce will be the other ending) that every fan expected. Dick has become the new Batman, so when is that Bruce coming back? Unlike Marvel, DC will bring back Bruce sooner than Steve. Is Steve coming back in Issue #600? Probably not, but that’s another story for another week. So here is the latest rundown on this debacle that DC has created for one of their flagship characters. Dick is Batman, Damian is Robin, Tim is Red Robin and oh yes, almost almost forgot ….Jason Todd fell to his death. Um, yea and Batman died too right? DC……..A Death In The Family (Robin) yes, Infinite Crisis (Supergirl) yes, these worked! ‘Death’ is NOT, NOT a selling point anymore! Is it possible to make a death in a comic book of a major character (Batman) completely irrelevant? Yes apparently it could be done, thanks DC. Someone needs to stop watching the Novelas (definition in a moment for you non-Spanish speaking fans) and get back on track here. Only real saving grace on this issue will be Judd Winick jumping on board. Now Judd, make everything better and stay away from those goofy Spanish
soap operas.

betaraybigod1.gif thor_337.jpgBeta Ray Bill: Godhunter #1  Not sure if anyone has noticed this, but has Beta Ray been around a lot these days? Or maybe it seems that way, doesn’t it? Well with the rumblings of Thor getting a cast for the movie together, it
really wouldn’t be a surprise to hear of Beta being a part of it. Maybe this is why he’s getting so much pencil time? Well a few weeks ago, IC recommended getting the first appearance of Ray in Thor #337. With another comic book coming out bearing his name on it, it probably would be wise to get the Walt Simonson classic run at deep discounted prices right now. Issue #337 comes in at only $10. Great Buy here fans.

Here are some other interesting Comics to look at this Wednesday…….

1 Iron Man 118 1st Jim Rhodes.jpg ironman_169_firsttimeasironman.jpg The Hot picks for this week focus on a Marvel character that has been around for a while. This hero will have his day in the sun as Marvel sets up for his comeback. Looking to make ‘Jimbo’ a major player, Marvel had recently announced at the San Diego Comic Con that he will be getting his own ongoing series. This week Jim Rhodes makes his return setting up for the solo series. Find out where it all began…..

A small week for Hot Picks. Never fret, there is always next week!

Let’s get started with Iron Man………

ironman033_cov.jpg

Iron Man # 33  War Machine will have his own ongoing series in the not so distant future and his comeback starts right here! If you hop on the time machine back to 1983 you’d find Iron Man # 169, which would be Jim Rhodes first appearance. Now fast forward 10 years later to 1993 and find Iron Man #291, which would be the first issue for War Machine on his own. These issues are very affordable right now and should be picked up before that solo series hits. It should also be noted that when Robert Downey Jr. gets bored of being Iron Man, look for Hollywood to look at Terrance Howard as War Machine to take flight in theaters as a solo movie. Pick up the first appearances and hold on to these comics for a while; you’ll be glad you did.

squadronsupreme2_3_arachnophilia.jpg

Squadron Supreme 2 # 3  Arachnophilia makes her comic debut right here. That’s a great Greg Horn cover huh?! The thing that makes this debut something to watch is that she has the powers of a spider of some sort. Any hero, (hero?) that possesses a type of spider power has always ‘usually’ turned out to be a mild success. Even though it might have taken YEARS to do so but, Spider-Woman is successful, Spider-Girl has a following and Spider-Man has potential, no? I guess we might have to wait a little bit to see how this new character plays out. You never know, this could be an instant successful character, or maybe it’ll take 20 years for comic fans to be interested. Tough call here, buy it, read it, let US know…….

mightyavengers18.jpg

Mighty Avengers # 18  Another debut for Marvel this week. This time a team debuts, Nick Fury’s Secret Warriors. Not too keen on the name. Sounds like something that has been done before. Just like the Squadron comic, not too sure this debut will be much…..right now. It’s a Secret Invasion tie in, which makes this a must have for SI readers. Nick Fury as of late has been kicking butt and taking names, maybe Nick Fury’s Secret Warriors will do the same in the investment column. Big maybe………

greatesthits1var.jpg

Greatest Hits # 1  A new team emerges from DC’s Vertigo imprint. They’re from England, they’re a rock band and they have super powers. No it’s not the Beatles. And a Variant cover by Ethan Van Sciver. Looks interesting.
