Weapon X #8

A possible introduction of a new villain in Dark Nights Metal #2. Maybe it’s just the Court of Owls? That Andy Kubert cover says this….Either way, still a great story thus far.
Mr. Oz reveals his identity in Action Comics #987 (Dan Jurgens & Viktor Bogdanovic). Part one of ‘The Oz Effect’. Two covers (Nick Bradshaw), the lenticular and non-lenticular are equally on point. Although ‘Mr. Oz’ will give readers the big ‘reveal’ he will turn out to be a character from long ago, but his first appearance as ‘Mr. Oz’ is in Superman #32 (2011).
The new Harley Quinn comic this week has a nice little reason for a collector to pick it up. Harley Quinn 25th Anniversary Special #1 celebrates….well the 25th year of her existence. Duh, but that’s not the reason this books cracks into the Hot Picks this week. DC Comics informs the fans that there will be creators all over this comic that have never worked on the Harley Quinn character before. Lots of first Harley work to check out, but from whom? Find out on Wednesday.
A villain named Bloodwork makes his (its) first appearance in Flash #30. Creative team; Joshua Williamson & Neil Googe.
Midtown Comics is limiting customers to only one copy per; Supergirl #13 – Stanley Artgerm Lau variant. Why the mention? Well, it’s a regular priced variant cover, so what’s up with that? And it’s going for almost double its cover price already in the aftermarket. Great cover though!

Marvel’s Generation comics continue, with two captains; Generations Captain Marvel & Captain Mar-Vell #1. Creators: Margaret Stohl & Brent Schoonover.
The Runaways television show will be arriving soon and Marvel Comics will be there to cash in with a new Runaways series. Runaways #1 will be the series’ fifth volume. InvestComics released a Runaways comics checklist back in September of 2016. You can check this out by clicking right HERE. Make sure to check out all of our checklists right HERE.
The new Weapon H character is still wet behind the ears and he’s already receiving a Venomized cover; Weapon X #8 by Greg Land. Oh yes, it’s sold out already.
Click on the RED links, Images or the comic cover to buy/bid from All available sellers on Ebay.
Venomverse #2 features Venom vs Poison Spider-Man. This is full of awesome as is this Venomverse series/event.
The late Michael Turner pops up every so often with a ‘remastered variant’. This time it’s Secret Empire Omega #1. InvestComics released a Michael Turner Creator Spotlight back in August 2016. You can click right HERE to check that out. What a super talent, gone way too soon.
Amazing Spider-Man #32 sets up the Spider-Man ‘event’ in 2018. Yes, that’s correct, 2018.

Image Comics’ Realm #1  feels like a Mad Max/Walking Dead/Game of Thrones mash-up book. Look for sell-outs almost immediately upon release. Creators: Seth Peck, Jeremy Haun & Nick Filardi. The Tony Moore (cover B) is stellar. A definite ‘InvestComics Best Comic Covers Of The Week’ book.
Click on the RED links, Images or the comic cover to buy/bid from All available sellers on Ebay.
The Retcon #1 Image Comics solicit is one of the most confusing but funny things we’ve seen in a while. It’s a reboot of a comic that never existed as it embarks on an all-new issue number one! Huh? Okay, you’ll make us buy it. Creators: Matt Nixon & Toby Cypress.
Sheena #1 from Dynamite Entertainment. Creators: Marguerite Bennett, Christina Trujillo & Moritat.
Shinobi Ninja Princess Lightning Oni #1 (Action Lab Entertainment). Creator Martheus Wade.

We here at InvestComics had a chance recently to speak with Carol Zara. Carol and Eric Barnett released their comic last week and it’s called Alien Toilet Monsters #1. The reviews are in and nothing but good things are being said here. This comic is not a typical toilet humor type comic, it’s an actual story that involves aliens, guns and a bad as* girl at the helm. This awesomely fun comic is only available at certain comic conventions the ATM crew will be attending. It’s also available if you ask your comic store to order directly from them. The Alien Toilet Monsters site can be seen by clicking right HERE. ATM have their social media pages in tow as well. Follow Carol Zara on Facebook and Instagram as she keeps things updated on a regular basis on what’s what with ATM.

We have NO control of release dates nor will we change our article to accommodate a change in shipping, release date or cancellation.

Each week InvestComics seeks out a comic(s) on Ebay for $100 or less and then brings it to the attention of our fans. We call it IC 100 Club Pick. The idea is to get a great book at a great price. We do not own nor are we selling these comics. The comics are found by a random process. We do not know the ebay seller(s), nor are we promoting the Ebay seller. Any knowing from the Ebay seller of InvestComics or its affiliates in purely coincidental. (See disclaimer for more details).

IC 100 Club Pick: Black Panther #1 (1977) 8.5. Here’s a beauty waiting to be bought for only $100.00. His first solo comic. Black Panther still has upside. His new comic coming out, a yet to be seen appearance in Cap’s Civil War movie, and a solo movie. Yes more upside for a character that hasn’t even hit its stride yet in film and the new comic book is getting all kinds of hype too. Black Panther is and will be the real deal.

Fanboys, please do not email us or make fanboy comments on our social media or here. If you’re a fanboy, discontinue reading please. If you’ve ever had a heated debate/fight/argument/cried (as an adult) over who is stronger Hulk or Superman or anything similar resembling a deep love of a comic character and know nothing about business, then please skip the opening here.

Have you’ve seen the new Deadpool movie? Well if haven’t, you probably have seen the aftermarket going bonkers after its release. New Mutants #87 (first full appearance of Cable) is quickly becoming the NEW New Mutants #98. This isn’t a bad thing if you’re on the side of the seller. If you’re a buyer, well you’re going to have to pay a severe premium in order to get your hands on the Cable book if you want it. Here’s the thing, and we’ve said it time and time again within the blogs of the InvestComics website. The New Mutants #98 comic is overpriced and so is (will be) New Mutants #87. The absurdity in pricing for these comics is almost comical actually.
Here are some quick numbers. Let us remind you here, CBCS does not have a census. Which means these numbers are probably much higher. These are CGC numbers…..
There are a total of 1000 New Mutants #87 graded at 9.8. 1087 graded at 9.6. A total of 3804 graded so far. That’s currently, that number will climb steadily and remember, this does not include CBCS. New Mutants #98; 2307 graded at 9.8, 2806 graded at 9.6 and a total of 9514 total graded. Probably over 10,000 graded counting CBCS.
Doctor Strange #169 (1968) 30 graded at 9.8, 70 graded at 9.6 and a total of 1063 graded. How is it that New Mutants #98 is rivaling this comic? Now all the fanboys got their panties in a bunch. Relax. We understand it’s a popularity contest right now, but here is some truth that the other wannbe InvestComics sites will not tell you. The Doctor Strange book is by far and away a better sound investment. Instead of spending $400/$500 on a first appearance on a comic(s) that are well documented as to having many copies available, use your business tactics and understand that supply and demand will eventually equate into the equation here and you will lose if you hold onto your comic a bit too long. It’s inevitable, you will lose money on New Mutants #87 and #98 because you refused to let it go. Anyone spending large amounts of money to have these comics in their possession, better have a plan to sell at an opportune time or else you will be in the red. Just in case you haven’t notice, we’ll say it, the comic book market has been and continues to see a massive correction. Especially the moderns. That first appearance of Spider-Gwen (variant) that InvestComics advised AGAINST buying at ridiculous prices is more than $300/$400/$500 below its asking price from more than a year ago. InvestComics warned our fans, while the other fanboy sites encouraged the buying frenzy. We’re here to spill truth and guide you, not help you lose money. Do not give into the hype of a comic or comics that saw prints of upwards to 225k a piece (New Mutants #98 and a bit less for New Mutants #87). That’s a quarter of a million copies of ONE comic book. What does this mean actually? Well it means there are several dealers and collectors that are sitting on long boxes full of Deadpool and Cable first appearance comic books. Can we say the same for a classic comic like Doctor Strange #169? No we cannot. Not hating on the first Deadpool or Cable here, but use common sense when spending that hard earned money. Realize that these two particular comics have a ceiling AND more importantly a ground floor. If you’re a buyer at a premium for ANY 90’s (*ahem* Doomsday *ahem* Apocalypse) or modern book), you have to know when to dump it or when the correction in the market does in FACT happen, you’ll be in the red and you’ll never make that money back. We’ve said this before, we’ll say it again. the real money is in Bronze/Silver/Golden. And one more thing. About Doomsday and Apocalypse, most likely one trick ponies. We’ll see them once and they’ll fade into obscurity never to be seen again on the big screen, thus driving that premium price back to the correct area.

And the award for longest title of the week goes to…….Hellboy and the BPRD 1953 Beyond The Fences #1! With this award the readers will get Writers Mike Mignola and Chris Roberson along with artist’s Paolo Rivera and Joe Rivera. Hellboy: Year Two. Yep, we’re in.

Maybe DC Comics received a special bundle price for the amount of Neal Adams variant covers we’re getting this month. Here are the covers this week from the legend himself; Flash #49, Deathstroke #15 (the Tyler Kirkman regular cover kills), Aquaman #49, Superman Lois And Clark #5, We Are Robin #9, Teen Titans #17, Cyborg #8, Grayson #17, and Superman #49.
And for the second week in a row, a Neal Adams Superman Wonder Woman variant comic is sold out. Check out Superman Wonder Woman #26 as Korean artist extraordinaire Kim Jung Gi pencils his second issue with the big three (Supes, WW, and Bats). We informed our fans last week about Kim Jung Gi. This guy is the real deal. Kim actually does the cover art for one of these variants (pictured here).
The real reason we have Neal Adams overload this month is because Superman The Coming Of The Supermen #1 will be coming out. Neal Adams will be the writer/artist here for the six issue mini-series. Fans are looking forward to a boldly told story and art from Neal. He will not disappoint here.

After a slight blip, Batman Dark Knight III The Master Race #3 will be back on schedule. And with it, as usual, a ridiculous amount of variant covers. All the covers are nice, nothing so riveting that you’ll need to pluck down a months worth of allowance for, but the Midtown Comics Greg Capullo cover is cool (pictured here).

Crazy eye candy from cover from Lee Bermejo coming this Wednesday. Check out We Are Robin #9. And more of the same from Michael Cho’s Daredevil #4 (Vol 5).

Click on the RED links or the comic cover to buy/bid from All sellers on Ebay.

IDW pits two unlikely franchises together for the first time ever, Street Fighter X and GI Joe. Yep, fun for all! A whole bunch of nutty variants will be available. The Matt Waite pixel cover is good, but our fav is the Paolo Villanelli cover.

Comic fans will be introduced to an all new mutant on new comic book day. Check out the introduction of Bailey Hoskins in X-Men Worst X-Man Ever #1. Definitely a comic to pay attention to.
Marvel warns fans about the last page in All New All Different Avengers #6. Don’t go to your shop and open to the last page now! It’s not a library you know! Hahaha!

With the press coverage Faith #1 received, it now comes time to see how the follow up issue does. Faith #2 comes out Wednesday with less fanfare, so let’s see how many fans stick with it after the first issue. Many will follow up regardless of the press push. It’s up to Faith and Valiant to keep them now.

Better get your hands on these indie’s; Straitjacket #4 (Amigo Comics) is sold out. Gingerdead Man #1 (Action Lab/Danger Zone) is sold out. Plus Ultra #2 (Overground Comics) is sold out.
And rounding out the week, check out Wynonna Earp #1 (IDW), Imposter #1 (21 Pulp).

InvestComics Hot Picks – New Release Comics on 8/27/14

1973237

Ultimate Spider-Man #29

Wool was optioned for a movie. That prompted issue number to be sold out and with that, Wool (2014 Cryptozoic) #2 has sold out now too. Stay close to this series for now. Remember, just because a comic book was optioned does not mean anything will ever materialize. Many times the comic market has a knee jerk reaction to the news and then many are stuck with comics that are impossible to sell. The best we do get though are great stories to read.

This week Superman (2011 3rd Series) #34 sees the introduction of the villain known as Machinist. Geoff Johns and John Romita Jr. are giving the fans what they want, some new life breathe into DC’s flagship title. Is this in fact a first appearance though or just a New 52 first appearance? The Machinist first appeared in Wildstorm #1 (2006).  Same dude? Probably not.

Robert Kirkman’s Outcast continues to garner attention. The latest edition; Outcast (2014 Image) #3 comes out this week. Issue one and two sold out. Look for issue three to follow that trend.

Last week I recommended Teen Titans #16 (1982), It’s the first appearance of Captain Carrot. I was having some fun and wanted to set a trend to make the book hot. This week I will revisit the wacky, but first let me make a point…….quite a few InvestComics Hot Picks ago I explained that Marvel’s Spider-Verse saga was all a basic ploy to see which solo spider books they can possibly get off the ground and sell. Spider-Verse will bring every single Spider-Man character ever front and center. I compiled a huge Spider-Verse list of the many faces of Spider-Man. It’s a list you’d probably want to keep handy given all of the new Spider characters we’ll see popping up or getting their own comic. Like the new Spider-Woman title. How about a new Peter Porker comic? Wait Peter Porker? Yes. Check out Ultimate Spider-Man (2012 Marvel Universe) #29; Spider-Ham has taken over. So expect A LOT more Spidey books and take overs to occur moving onward towards Spider-Verse, before, during and after. Now let’s get back to the wacky stuff. Peter Porker first appeared in Marvel Tails Starring Peter Porker, The Spectacular Spider-Ham #1 (1982). The Ultimate Spider-Ham first appeared in Ultimate FF #5 (2014). Awesome! Let Spider-Verse begin! And click right HERE to check out that InvestComics Spider-Verse Checklist, some great hidden gems in there.

[scrollGallery id=368]

Secret Origins (2014) 3rd Series #5 will focus on the character Cyborg. I have recommended DC Comics Presents #26 (1980) countless times throughout the years. This comic of course features the first appearance of the New Teen Titans and several new characters. It’s a very obtainable book, not scarce at all. The main reason for the prices to be where they are at. Cyborg first appeared in DCP #26 and he’s also going to be in the Superman vs. Batman film. Will we also get a Teen Titans spin off from this film besides the Justice League? Most likely yes, so buckle in and get ready for DC Comics Presents to become an even hotter book way down the line somewhere. It’s going to be a way for Warner Bros. to attract that younger core audience. The book is an absolute bargain right now with average RAW prices on Ebay going in the $60 range. A 9.2 graded sold for $135 and a 7.5 sold for $81. So here’s what you do. Buy yourself a high grade raw copy. Get George Perez and Marv Wolfman to sign it (get a witness). Grade it, and you have yourself a wonderful resale right now, but more so in the future.

DC Comics Presents #26 (1980) First Appearance of The New Teen Titans.

Adventures of Superman (2013) 2nd Series #16 will give a semi-Superman history lesson told by Kamandi. This history class won’t be a bore! Various artists contribute to the different Supermen throughout the years. Should be a great nostalgic look and read.

The Fox channel has a hit on their hands with the show Bob’s Burgers. Now that hit series will become a comic book for the first time; Bobs Burgers (2014) #1. Look for the Midtown Comics Exclusive for only $10. Get some of the cast to sign it. Have it witnessed of course and grade it. It’ll be a unique book to resell to a Bob’s Burgers fan.

Face Value #1 from Autism at Face Value brings the topic of autism front and center. Heroes with autism. It’s an important awareness comic that everyone should check out. If you’d like to learn more about autism and donate go right HERE to the Autism Research Institution.

Other comics you definitely need to check out this week are Wayward (2014 Image) #1, Pop (2014 Dark Horse) #1, Jaegir (2014) #0, Hero Cats (2014 Action Lab) #1, Brainstorm (2014) #1, Shinobi Ninja Princess (2014) #1, and Sundowners (2014) #1.

InvestComics Hot Picks – New Release Comics on 7/9/14

1916135Everything you are about to read is All original material from InvestComics. 100% Authentic. No borrowed material ever, 100% InvestComics.

Not that many pick-ups in the way of the spec market this week, but as always still plenty of great reads too.

There are a sufficient amount of Grayson (2014 DC) #1 still available at the distributor, a bit surprising. The comic will probably fair well as the series progresses. The new series will follow Dick Grayson as an agent from Spyral. The Spyral group first appeared in Batman Incorporated #4 (2011). A pricey $75 variant by Phil Jimenez accompanies the new release.

Another comic this week with a few copies still in the warehouse is Spider-Man 2099 (2014)#1. And another surprise here? Maybe not so much so. Marvel has been beating the relaunch Spidey comics a bit much these days. That’s not to say a speculator cannot flip the books to make some cash, but the mere fact that there are still copies of this issue available for reorder is saying something. It’s a number one Spidey book, it should have a sold out sign on the shelf. If you want to make any sort of headway here, you’ll probably have to get the Midtown Comics J.G. Jones variant for $10. Maybe flip it raw. Getting a signature and a grade is probably the way to go here if you want to make a few dollars more. Don’t expect too much here. Speaking of Spider-Man, 100th Anniversary Special Spider-Man (2014) #1 continues the first look at the new villain Clash.

[scrollGallery id=357]

One more thing here about Spider-Man 2099. If you’d like to find his first appearance or any Spider-Man first appearance you really should check out a few checklists I put together a while ago here on InvestComics. The latest one was the Spider-Verse checklist. This article is a hot commodity and will become even hotter once the Spider-Verse comics start spinning in different series. Check out that article right HERE. There is also a Spider-Man movie checklist part 1 & 2. Those are extremely handy for those seeking out every important Spider-Man book possible. Part 1 HERE and Part 2 HERE.

There is also a video that I put together for the Spider-Man articles showing all of the Spider-Man key issues that any comic/Spidey collector needs to have. If you haven’t seen it, enjoy. If you have, thanks for watching.

A bit of a head scratcher this week with this one here. New Suicide Squad (2014) #1 looks, feels, and should be a sold out comic. The Joker’s Daughter, Deathstroke, and Harley Quinn make up two-thirds of this awesome team. How is this comic not sold out? A $15 Ivan Reis variant would certainly be a smart pick up here. The momentum may catch on after a couple of issues. Or maybe it’ll catch on sooner than that. Either way, the New Suicide Squad is an awesome team. Fans will come around….

Original Sin (2014 Marvel) #5.1 will introduce the Tenth Realm and focus on Thor/Loki’s new sister Angela. Fun times! Wolverine continues the beginning of the end in Wolverine (2014 5th Series) #10.

Spread (2014 Image) #1 is sold out and is a must get this week and a head scratching sold out Grimm Fairy Tales Swimsuit Special (2010) #2014 makes for great eye candy….that’s about it. Zenescope Entertainment does have a sold out comic this week that doesn’t give that eyebrow raise; Realm Knights Age of Darkness (2014) #1. Plenty of copies left from Images’ Death Vigil (2014 Image) #1 and Waste Of Time #1 from Northwest Press is just about sold out.

Invest wisely. Carpe Diem.

InvestComics Hot Picks – New Release Comics on 7/2/14

Everything you are about to read is All original material from InvestComics. 100% Authentic. No borrowed material ever, 100% InvestComics.

First order of business is to reiterate something that InvestComics has touched upon quite often, but maybe some new comers to the site are not aware of. Although InvestComics is in fact the best speculation comic book website on the planet, another fact is that THIS article each week and many others on the site recommend that you read comics too. While I do realize that speculation is not for everyone, I am a true believer of bringing collectors and fans alike together. No matter what, comic book fans can relate to each other like no other medium can. Whether you are a fan of the speculation side or a fan of the storyline, one thing is certain; we will always debate questions like “Who would win in a fight, Superman or Thor? Who is the bigger bad ass, Deathstoke or Deadpool? Is Moon Knight as comparable to Batman these days than ever?” The list of debates goes on, but you get the idea.

So many times during the course of an InvestComics Hot Picks article I will be sure to point out that there are probably some good “reads” coming out that Wednesday and that even if the spec market doesn’t equate to monetary gain, you still may gain the awesomeness of a great story. Yes money is fantastic, reading this article every week will help your aftermarket sales, but sitting down in a quiet room, dining room table, the living room, on your bed and reading a great story is in fact immeasurable. We as comic book fans and speculators can coexist together. The InvestComics Hot Picks has always made a point to inform readers that there are books that need to be checked out for the mere fact of a great read. So if you read, collect, or merely speculate, we all have one common thing. We all love comic books.

15901_20051209091407_largeshazam1Now let’s talk about a recent DC Comics announcement. The announcement touched on a few movie possibilities for several characters/books. There was one standout……..Shazam. Some may not see the brilliance in the possibility that lay before them within the spec market here. Not only would the character fit perfectly on the big screen, but it would make for a new franchise that would correct any mistakes on any of the Superman stumbles. It gives DC/Warner Bros. a chance to really expand on a character that many know and many don’t know of. Everyone knows Superman. There hasn’t been another character to challenge anyone with a cape that can fly, minus a hammer, a batarang, etc. on the big screen. The time has come to get another dude with a cape that can fly and isn’t a “boy scout”. Although many fans will say differently about Superman being a boy scout regarding the last flick, but don’t get that twisted because when Batman vs. Superman comes out, Clark will be the good boy and the friction will ensue between them. Back to Shazam, DC will have an open season with this character. Just like Superman, he has been redone in so many ways that you can essentially pick and choose which Shazam will best fit for the big screen. There is no set tone for him because the Shazam character has never been taken that seriously. Superman however has always been reverted back to the boy scout for the screen (minus the last movie). So when it comes to Shazam, it will be extremely interesting on which route they will take. I personally think that Shazam will be a very big deal. A huge one in fact. I’ve said this about so many characters on this site and a lot of them have come to fruition. Shazam is a lock. Besides owning Whiz #2 (1940), the first appearance of Captain Marvel, if you can afford that book, you need to get the very easy accessible (for now) Shazam! #1 (1973). This comic is the very first time DC’s Captain Marvel goes by the name Shazam. A recent graded 9.8 sold for only $487.50. There are some Near Mint raw copies available within the $30/$40 range. An absolute bargain right now. You heard it here first, on the greatest speculation web site on the planet, InvestComics.

[scrollGallery id=355]

There are three sketch variants that really need to be on your radar as possible signature series books for your collection and turnovers. Rocket Raccoon (2014 2nd Series) #1 will be accompanied by a few variants, but the Midtown Comics J. Scott Campbell sketch variant is a winner. Get this $20 variant CGC Signature Series and you’re looking at a nice payday. Buy it raw even; flip it in a couple of weeks. You’ll make some cash on this comic easy.  A ridiculously gorgeous Jim Lee sketch variant on Superman Unchained (2013 DC) #7 will sell for a premium if you can score a signature and a 9.8 or higher. And speaking of absolutely gorgeous, a  $300 Alex Ross sketch cover for Captain America (2012 7th Series) #22 would be a nice turnover if a sig/9.8 is attached.

1365253_ful 1365244_ful 1361417_fulThe cash cow, a.k.a. Marvel Comics will cashing in on the Guardians of the Galaxy frenzy with new comic series featuring Rocket Raccoon (mentioned earlier) and Star Lord in Legendary Star Lord (2014 Marvel) #1. A bazillion variant covers on this one is quite the overkill here, but the Midtown Comics variant would be a nice pick-up only to flip quickly. While the Raccoon will see much success, Star-Lord will probably see a hot out of the gate presence, but will fall flat eventually. Then you have Guardians of the Galaxy Galaxys Most Wanted (2014) #1 which features a story with Rocket Raccoon and Groot. It’s essentially a Marvel Team-Up comic with the Guardians name attached instead.  The cover alone will have heads turning on this one.

Hey InvestComics told you about Figment #1 and now Figment (2014) #2 is already sold out. Not only is it sold out, but a major on line comic store is limiting ONE per customer.

Fearless Dawn Hard Times (2014) #0 will sellout by this weekend. If you want to search for a comic that probably has a very limited print run and features the first appearance of Fearless Dawn; look for The Bomb #1 (2006) (Atom Bomb Comics).

DC Comics’ Earth 2 (2012 DC) #25 will feature a new Superman. An African American Superman that isn’t Steel or President Superman.

Batman Superman (2013 DC) #12 will have a character “with great strength”, but have no idea who they are. Intro? Pick it up, find out. And who is Gruesome George? Find out in Batwing (2011-) #33.

InvestComics Radar love; Scum of the Earth (2014) #1, Enormous (2014) Ongoing #1, Oz Age of Darkness (2014) #1, 100th Anniversary Special Fantastic Four (2014) #1, Tom Clancy Splinter Cell Echoes (2014) #1, Deadpool vs X-Force (2014) #1, and Hack Slash Son of Samhain (2014 Image) #1.

Read and Invest Wisely.

Carpe Diem.

InvestComics Hot Picks – New Release Comics on 4/16/14

Fifteen number one issues are featured in this week’s article. Some of course with an overload in the variant cover department, but hey no one is forcing anyone to buy them right?

Marvel Comics continues their version of the new 52 with the release of Hulk (2014 2nd Series) #1 and Ultimate Fantastic Four (2014 2nd Series) #1. Not a complete overhaul of their titles, but an abundance of number one issues. Which in reality is completely pointless, but that’s a debate for another time. The new Hulk series will do well, while the new Fantastic Four will border on mediocrity after its first few issues. The Hulk series is accompanied by six variants and FF only has two. See even Marvel knows the deal here. The GET comic in all 8 of these choices is the Mark Bagley Hulk variant. Mark is a stud, Hulk is a stud, CGC is a stud, and a signature from Mark would cap off your $25 variant investment.

[scrollGallery id=346]

Staying on topic with the variants covers, there is a prized variant to try to get your hands on. Superior Spider-Man (2012) #31 will have six variants, but it’s the Midtown Comics color and sketch variants that will fetch some aftermarket love. Be sure to check out InvestComics on Ebay for a chance to bid on those comics if you miss out. Oh yes one more thing. Superior Spider-Man #31 is sold out at the distributor.

Solar Man of the Atom (2014 Dynamite) #1 comes with twelve variants. Stuck in those variants someplace are two Rob Liefeld variants. Neat! Solar Man of the Atom gained huge popularity back in 1991 when the series was under the Valiant banner. These days, most of the characters are seeing resurgence. And if you missed the cool announcement coming out of the Sharp Comics camp, they are releasing limited edition variant connecting covers that include Turok, Solor, and Magnus from “Mr. Valiant” himself Bob Layton. Check out the full press release right HERE.

Batman Eternal (2014) #2 will introduce an old villain that has yet to be introduced in the New 52. Sinestro (2014) #1 will be a great read. His first appearance in Green Lantern #7 (1961) is always a nice book to keep in the collection.

A couple of comic covers this week pay tribute to yesteryear. Bad Ass (2014 Dynamite) #4 borrows from Amazing Spider-Man #129 (1974). Godstorm Hercules Payne (2014) #1 pays homage to Action Comics #1 (1938). It’s nice to see a Zenescope Entertainment Ana_Alexanderbook that doesn’t involve any T&A on its variant cover.

IDW will release Transformers Windblade (2014) #1. Windblade first appeared this year in Transformers: Robots in Disguse #26 (2014). Did you know that the character Sheena is older than Superman? Sheena first appeared in the UK in 1937 and then in the states in 1938. Now in 2014, she appears again courtesy of Moonstone comics; Sheena (2014 Moonstone) #1.

A comic that may fly under the radar this week, but should be blipping on your screen is Porcelain (2014 Red 5) #1. Actress/Model Ana Alexander (Femme Fatales/Bones) is the creator/writer/star of this comic. It involves an assassin and it looks as though it’s done in a modern anime style. Be sure to check out this comic. Oh, in case you’re not too sure who Ana Alexander is, she’s pictured to the right.

Here are the rest of the number one issues to definitely check out this Wednesday. Mercenary Pig #1 from Aazurn Publishing is sold out at the distributor level. Got to love that title!  Translucid (2014) #1, Ghost Wolf (2014 Amigo) #1 (sold out), Time Lincoln Continental (2014) #1, Captain Action Cat (2014) #1, A Piggys Tale (2014) #1 (sold out),  and San Hannibal (2014) #1 (sold out).

See you soon. Invest wisely

Carpe Diem.

There are an abundance of comics to check out this week. The list is long, but the week is very soft. That said I’ll be sure to let you know which comics to put your emphasis on. Not much here, so look for those back issues.

InvestComics Hot Picks – New Comic Releases 11/27/13

One standout comic this week could be Nova (2013 5th Series) #10. Last week with the mention of Nova #19 (1978), many fans were very puzzled by this. I received a few messages on the board, Instagram, and personal email saying “Nova? Really?” Yes Nova, really. If you haven’t been paying attention, let me fill you in a bit.

Marvel Studios are about to embark on a whole new universe of pictures and change everything. Yes they are going to change the way movie goers watch “space/cosmic” films with the release of one film; Guardians of the Galaxy. What this particular film will do is open up the flood gates to introduce Marvel in space; their Cosmos if you will. Yes the film will have to fare well in order for the initial steps to be taken, to progress. If all goes well (which it should), Marvel Studios will be on their way to building a cosmic storyline on the big screen as no one has ever done before (besides Star Wars of course, calm down). Now there is one point though, which has been mentioned on InvestComics a few times, what about failure? What happens WHEN, not IF, When a Marvel Studios movie does not meet expectations at the box office? This will in fact happen, it’s inevitable. It will be very interesting to see how Disney reacts to the bad box office draw. One thing is for certain however, the comic book market will be affected to a degree. The prices will drop back into place where they probably should be and level off. The constant influx of various movies and television show announcements are driving prices batty for quite some time now. THIS will be the crash, NOT the variants, 3D covers, etc. The hyperbole will drive pricing back to reality if expectations are not met in the mainstream. Would you pay $10,000 for a Walking Dead CGC 9.9? Yes someone did. THAT is what you call a bad investment. $10,000 on a first appearance 9.9 of Green Goblin, Lois Lane, or even Wolverine makes sense. These characters are household names. Walking Dead is a hot zombie television show right now. It will eventually run its course and no longer be hot anymore. Granted, good story, good show, but its zombies….that’s it. Yes anyone can say “it’s about the character development and how we follow them” but in actuality, no zombies, no show. Not bashing the show, giving a dose of speculation reality here. Spending $10,000 on the number one issue is a bit of an oversight on that buyers part, but maybe, just maybe I’ll be wrong on this.

[scrollGallery id=321]

So back to Nova, as explained Marvel Studios will take the leap into space. It’s a risky one with Guardians because no one really knows of them. Rocket Raccoon will be the star in this one, so it’s best you stock up on him. Anyway, Nova has been mentioned in passing by Marvel and through some rumors. If Marvel is reaching out into the space universe, what’s not to think Nova won’t be a part of that? Same with Warlock, Silver Surfer, Death, and maybe Rom! Remember him? How cool would that be to have a Rom movie? Yes wrestling with that toy company can get dicey, but what Disney wants, Disney gets. What it all boils down to is making sure as a speculator that you have all of your Cosmic ducks in a row. Pick up the rare first appearance, those odd number one issues, the status quo change books, and the rare Thanos variants. It will pay dividends down the line IF the Guardians of the Galaxy movie does well. Nova (2013 5th Series) #10 will play pretend and solict this comic as the 100th issue. Gotta love the restarts, five of them for Nova to be exact here. The comic will come with all sorts of variants. The prize variant will be the JG Jones Incentive. A $60 book that can see some decent gains if handled properly. Nova #10 will star the NEW New Warriors (another potential space team down the road). Check out the first appearance of the New Warriors (“old team”) in Thor #411 (1989). A must own.

We like intros don’t we? Of course we do! Ultimate Spider-Man (2012 Marvel Universe) #20 will introduce a new villain named Whirlwind, so check that out. Kick-Ass 3 (2013 Marvel) #5 will do some introducing themselves with a new villain team. Infinity Hunt (2013) #4 plants the seeds of Marvel’s next major event. Are we tired yet of these major events? And speaking of Infinity, Infinity (2013 Marvel) #6 will conclude with an oversized issue as Thanos fights everyone! And incidentally, Iron Man #55 is Still a must buy. Avengers Assemble (2012) #21 hints at the team Inhumans. The Inhumans are about to have a breakout year next year. Get on top of Fantastic Four #45 (1965) for the first appearance of the Inhumans. Staying on topic with the Avengers, Avengers Arena (2012) #18 will see its final issue this week. With more death and a launching pad for something else. Something major will be happening in All New X-Men (2012) #19 so be sure to glance through that book. Damian Son of Batman (2013) #2 is sold out for the most part on the retail level. The variants are completely sold out. The Andy Kubert black and white variant would be a nice CGC sig series flip book. Forever Evil Argus (2013) #2 will highlight Deathstroke. One of the baddest dudes in the DC Universe. If you’re a regular reader of this column each week, you already know that InvestComics is a huge Deathstroke supporter. I have always felt that the Deathstroke character is on the cusp of some serious play, but DC doesn’t know exactly what to do with him (i.e. Nightwing). Yes they finally put him on television (sparingly), but that’s not enough. Get this guy going already. Bigger role on the show, movie appearances, chop chop DC! A huge recommendation throughout the years on InvestComics has been The New Teen Titans #2 (1980) and it will continue to be in BUY mode with InvestComics. And for those keeping score at home, Forever Evil Argus #2 variant is sold out, which means absolutely nothing on the speculator side of things. Geoff Johns will be hitting all out on Aquaman (2011 5th Series) #25. The conclusion to the “Death of a King” storyline. The new Superior Spider-Man event begins this week; The Darkest Hour in Superior Spider-Man (2012) #22. Venom will have his first run in with Superior Spidey in this issue. This should be very interesting. In the “in case you missed it” department, DC will release Sandman Overture (2013) Special Edition #1. The issue will feature a bunch of useless extras if you’re interested.

IDW will bring back a cult favorite in Sam Keith’s Maxx Maxximized (2013 IDW) #1. A collector can buy the first appearance of Maxx in the overprinted Darker Image #1 (1993).

Black Science (2013 Image) #1 will be THE Image Comic to grab this week. Already sold out at the retail level, but the $10 Midtown Comics variant will be the one to get if this comic makes an impact in the aftermarket. IDW’s Mr Peabody and Sherman (2013 IDW) #1 variant is sold out. Never Ending (2013 Dark Horse) #1, Quest (2013 Zenescope) #1, and Sledgehammer 44 Lightning War (2013) #1 are all on the verge of selling out.

Invest wisely,

Jay Katz
