Welcome to the InvestComics Hot Picks for New Comic Releases on 10-2-13

The DC 3D madness is finally over! Rejoice and collect your monies in the aftermarket because interest will wane very quickly. In actuality it already has! Prices have been coming down at a rapid rate and if you haven’t sold yet, you may be late to the party. As already told here on InvestComics Hot Picks, you had to watch the 3D market very closely because of the hype surrounding the comics. The gimmick was going to be short lived as there will be a couple of those rare variant 3D’s that will survive the aftermath of the collapse. The best investments should be held for all of those first appearances pointed out during the 3D run here on InvestComics. Picking up a few of those first appearances should ensure that if a few of these villains bust out, make a comeback, a name for themselves, become the next ‘Bane’ or ‘Venom’ character for a major character, you will own that first appearance and be ahead of the curve!

Besides the sold out gimmick of the 3D covers, DC does in fact have a hit on their hands. Forever Evil is in fact hitting a home run with fans alike. Forever Evil (2013DC) #2 is completely sold out this week across the board. The prize this week will be the Black & white variant. Grab this; sell it on Ebay for a 25% return or possibly more very easily; immediately. Do not hold onto these comics folks. These are not life changing altering moments within the DC Universe, barring of course plotlines we are not aware of! There are some great storylines going on within these pages, but nothing is foreseen to change the market value or demand to sustain the trend upwards.

A trend in the comic book solicits market also continues however in Green Lantern (2011 4th Series) #24 this week. The words uttered so many times “…nothing will be the same, WE MEAN IT!” have been spoken far too often, but we as fans eat it up! Check out what writer Robert Venditti will bring to the table. Oh yes and the solicit also makes another common reference; “Lanterns will die”. Looking forward to it!

Batman Black and White (2013) #2 will bring legendary artist Jim Steranko to a Bat book again. Mr. Steranko will provide the gorgeous cover for this wonderful new series this week. It’s amazing to note that this legend has never provided as much DC artistry over his career. He’s thought of more as a “Marvel” guy, but when he does pencil any DC hero/villain, people take notice! With Batman though, his first official Batman work came in 1998’s Batman Black & White hardcover. Hard to fathom that given the profound career, he added Batman to his resume in 1998! The Batman work came in form of a tip-plate within the hardcover. Awesome, amazing stuff here folks.

In wrapping up DC here, Movement (2013 DC) #5 will debut the group ‘Graveyard Faction-death for hire’. Two sold out Vertigo books come our way this Wednesday; Hinterkind (2013 DC/Vertigo) #1 and Witching Hour (2013 DC/Vertigo) #1. The pleasant surprise here has to be the sold out Witching Hour #1. As a $7.99/70 pager’ all things point to the awesomeness of Vertigo. Even though the trend of a new book debuting with a $7.99 price tag, it usually tends to make some collectors/readers a little apprehensive, it doesn’t matter here though. Fans know this is going to rock! All 70 pages…..

Marvel Comics brings back a Marvel Knights Spidey book this week. Hooray! Check out the almost sold out regular cover Marvel Knights Spider-Man (2013) #1 this Wednesday (Variant cover sold out). The first Spider-Man Knights came in the 2004 by the same title and lasted only 22 issues. Maybe this time we’ll buck that trend and go longer! With writer Matt Kindt and artist Marco Rudy on board, it looks like a success already! And with a new Marvel Knights book, comes a new Marvel Max book too! What a great week! Take a look at Fantomex Max (2013) #1 miniseries at your local shop this week. It probably won’t disappoint. If this feeler goes over well, and fans demand more Fantomex, you better already own New X-Men #128 (2002). This would be the first appearance of Fantomex. Another three Marvel titles are on the cusp of sellouts and collectors should be put on alert. Captain America Living Legend (2013) #1 will be the highest alert. With writer Andy Diggle/artist Adi Granov on board and the introduction of a villain named Volkov, look for a possible aftermarket bump here. Marvel Universe Avengers Assemble (2013) #1 is based on the animated television show, but it’s the bonus Lego Marvel Comic within the extra sized issue here that has InvestComics intrigued. And finally from Marvel, any fan of Superior Spider-Man should probably take a look at All New X-Men Special (2013) #1 this Wednesday.

Here’s a quick list of sold out debut comics and number two comics coming your way this Wednesday. Bushido (2013 Image) #1, Shadow Now (2013 Dynamite) #1, Codename Action (2013 Dynamite) #2, Reality Check (2013 Image) #2, Grindhouse Doors Open At Midnight (2013) #1, Pirate Eye Murder at Ten Knots (2013) #0, Lady Rawhide (2013 Dynamite) #2, Occultist (2013 Dark Horse) #1, and Mocking Dead (2013 Dynamite) #2.

That’s it for this week. Check out some covers of the week below. Invest wisely.

InvestComics Hot Picks – Comic Reprint Special

Reprint Special

These days even reprints of popular books are getting some love!  Here are the best to invest in…

The Goon 1 (One for One)

Dark Horse used this to expose readers to some of their best work.  Tough to find in any grade it will certainly pay off down the road when the rest of the world starts hunting down rare Goon appearances.

Chew 1 (Image Firsts)

Similar in many ways to Dark Horse’s One for One, Image comics released a ton of reprints of popular titles for only a dollar.  The rarest are easily Orc Stain and the Walking Dead.  All it’s going to take is the Chew TV series to hit and this one will blow up too.  The good news is that these are out there and most stores continue to sell them for a dollar!

Mad Millennium Edition Error

Some of DC’s Millennium editions are great collectibles.  Reprints of titles include Justice League ofAmerica1, The Watchmen 1 and chrome variants of some famous DC issues. This comic reprints MAD issue 1 which is cool enough but in the error edition DC forgets to acknowledge E.C. comics and the men who made it all happen.

Marvel Milestones Iron Man 55

Publishers love to copy each other.  Marvel Milestones does exactly what DC’s Millennium Editions do.  Other than Secret Wars 8 this is the only one to track down for investment purposes.  Seeing as it’s quite hard to find Iron Man 55 this comic makes it possible to read the story and enjoy the first appearance of Thanos!  Oh and Drax first appears here which could bring some added value when the Guardians of the Galaxy movie comes out.

Mighty Marvel Must Haves

Starting in 2001 Marvel began reprinting key titles in editions that featured more than one issue. The best are 22 and 23 which feature reprints of X-23’s first two appearances.

Y The Last Man Double Feature 2002

It looks like a movie is in the works and seeing what other rare reprinting of first issues go for I expect the comic (which features issues 1, 2) to soar in value.

The Walking Dead (Image Firsts)

So this comic has seen gains to due to an explosive Walking Dead market.  Most know that the first print has three black borders; the second print has no black borders and sells for less.  It seems a third print exists and it’s rare.  It has three black borders but was printed in September of 2011 and had a different back cover than the others.  Its back cover features ads for the AMC show.

Here’s an updated list of current books that are generating big internet sales and general buzz in the industry.

InvestComics Hot Picks – Summer Special

Topher Seal is back with his Summer Special article! Things are heating up outside and so are these gems!

As summer sizzles up there’s sure to be plenty of flea markets, auctions and cons to attend. That means back issue blowouts set up by desperate dealers and rank, aging fanboys will hopefully yield treasures or at least help you scratch some books off your want list.  Here’s a few you sould look for in the first discount longbox you see!

Strange Tales 2 Issue 1

The Rafael Grampa cover (more on him next time!) alone makes this one worth the price but a rare contribution from the creator of The Perry Bible Fellowship is the best reason to buy this creative Marvel offering.

Value: 5.00

Venom 13 Sketch Variant

Some comics you just have to buy because they define a particular era. The new Venom series has a great writer and a character wearing the suit that we can finally be proud of.  This rare issue features the first appearance of The Circle of Four as well as the first appearance of the Antithesis (a group which mirrors the dark sides of the Circle.)  The ones to remember here are Encephalon and X-666!  Buy it, grade it and stash it in your vault.

Value:  50

New X-men 128

As the Uncanny X-force has become the premiere X book for Marvel there is one member who has recently generated heat similar to Deadpool. Fantomex’s first appearance is hot and Ebay sales of CGC 9.8 grade copies are seeing insane gains.  There’s hope though.  I picked up 2 in NM at a localBostonshop this past weekend.  This is an opportunity to get in early on an obscure character who is fast becoming a popular creation.

Value: 25.00-50.00  Ebay sales of 25-50 in NM and 200-300 in CGC 9.8

X-Men Second Coming 2 (Finch Variant)

Looking for the first appearance of the new Uncanny X-Force?  This is it people.  While others track down all the variants for issue 1of the regular series it is in the issue where Wolverine defies Cyclops and forms the team!

Value:  30

Civil War 2 (Turner Sketch Variant)

This one is a few years old but it features one of the most important storylines ever printed and down the road will be a very valuable book due to content and rarity.

Value:  45.00

Resurrection Man Vol. 1 Issue 1 (2nd Print)

DC’s new 52 issue brings back Mitch Shelly as the tormented Resurrection Man, written by Dan Abnett. Normally I don’t recommend collecting first issues with larger print runs unless you really know what you are doing but this issue is cool because it’s the Resurrection Man’s first appearance!

The 2nd Printing is harder to find than the first.  Look for the Roman numeral 2 which denoted the later printing.

Value: 10.00 for the second printing

Dark Horse Presents Vol. 2 issue 1  (Paul Pope Variant Cover)

There are a lot of wonderful things going on in Dark Horse’s new series.  From Harlen Ellison to Richard Corben it appears as if this new series is picking up right where it left off (see issue 157 with the Goon!)  But the real gem here is a sneak peak at Frank Miller’s Xerxes!  If the series is half as good as 300 look for this book to soar in value.  Plus there’s a wicked cover by an indie favorite.

Value: 20.00

Superman & Batman 80

Appearances of alternate versions or future versions of our favorite heroes often lead to an increase in value.  Part 2 of this intriguing tale concerns Epoch , the Lord of Time and features rare appearances by Damian Wayne as Batman as well as the Batman from the 46th century, Superman 2 and the futuristic duo who deal with what’s called The Greater Darkness?!  Though they all only appear in a single splash page who knows when they all might show up again.  Take a chance on this one as it could become as hard to find as the Superman Batman Annual 4 (also featuring an incredible Batman Beyond story!)

Value:  3.00

Resurrection Man 27 Series Finale

It’s the same old story here…low print run and great writing is the recipe for back issue value.

Oh and check out Resurrection Man One Million for the greatest Mitch Shelly tale ever written!

Value:  8.00

68 (one-shot, covers A & B)

Come on you know that zombies are still hot and even when they cool off it won’t be long before the cycle repeats itself.  With an awesome story, 2 covers and a low print run I suggest buying this book while there’s still a chance you can find it.

Value: 25.00

BLUE CHIP BOOK OF THE MONTH

Tales of Suspense 79 (first cosmic cube)

Whatever Loki’s plans are for the cosmic cube in the upcoming Avengers film you can be sure that this book will see a healthy increase in value!
