Each week InvestComics seeks out a comic(s) on Ebay for $100 or less and then brings it to the attention of our fans. We call it IC 100 Club Pick. The idea is to get a great book at a great price. We do not own nor are we selling these comics. The comics are found by a random process. We do not know the ebay seller(s), nor are we promoting the Ebay seller. Any knowing from the Ebay seller of InvestComics or its affiliates is purely coincidental. (See disclaimer for more details).

IC 100 Club Pick: We have three CBCS graded comics to check out this week. Power Man and Iron Fist #119 (1985) 9.8. The retelling of Iron Fists’ origin for only $95. Free shipping. John Byrne cover. Nova #1 (1976) 9.0. The first appearance and origin of Marvel’s Nova character. On the cusp of something great in our humble opinion. This 9.0 graded comic is only $99 with free shipping. New Mutants #87 (1990) 8.5. This is the first appearance of Cable. It’s an 8.5 and with a press, maybe bump that grade up? Only $99.

We informed our fans back in January of this year regarding the Marvel character Slapstick. Check that out right here at this LINK. We spoke about all of the Merc For Money characters getting their own solo books before it was ever spoken about from Marvel. We especially hyper-focused on the Slapstick character. We thought and still think there is upside to this goofy Joker/Deadpool misfit character. Maybe even bigger things down the pike for him. This week the new Slapstick #1 will begin his newest journey onward and upward. He first appeared back in 1992’s self titled book Slapstick #1. We said it back in January and we’ll say it again, get his first appearance now. It was literally 75 cents when we mentioned it back 11 months ago. A NM copy ranges around $10 now in some outlets. Well worth it. Buy it now. The new Slapstick #1 Rob Liefeld variant(s) have Deadpool on the cover to make this a must get for variant cover collectors.

Speaking of giving fans a heads up, we helped fans make lots of money (flips) with Darth Vader #3, the first appearance of Doctor Aphra. Marvel continues their female dominate character run with their last(?) solo female book of 2016; Star Wars Doctor Aphra #1. Written by Darth Vader writer Kieron Gillen and art from Kev Walker. The solicit remains a secret as fans will get an in-depth look into the rookie Star Wars player in the Marvel universe. The Doctor is in and the prognosis is a good one.

Titan Comics will go back to well with their hit character Norman. Norman The First Slash #1 will begin a new series regarding the psychotic 9(?) year old boy. The first series sold very well as Norman #1 commanded some nice aftermarket cash before it settled off. If Titan Comics continues the restarts, that will demoralize the value a little bit of the number one issue. They should just have an on-going series and stick with it. That’s our two-cents, but Titan Comics and Norman will be awesome no matter what anyway.
Faith #6 from Valiant Entertainment will introduce fans to a new villain.
Dynamic Entertainment provides fans with a team up of epic proportions. A pairing that had fans screaming, demanding it happen. This Wednesday, because you demanded it, Wonder Woman 77 Meets The Bionic Woman #1. Odd pairing no?

We begin this week with Infinity Gauntlet #1.The first appearance of Anwen Bakian and as the new Nova. Yet another strong female presence enters the realm of the Marvel universe. The original Infinity Gauntlet #1 took place in 1991. The 1991 Infinity Gauntlet was a fantastic read. As for the 2015 version, get the Adi Granov variant if you are speculating big on this character and want the most bang for your buck. Adi provides the new character front and center in this beautiful variant.

Here’s a quick free comic book speculating lesson from InvestComics regarding the influx of new female characters. Newsflash, not all first appearances (female OR male) will offer a large return within the aftermarket. Actually, some may not even have a return at all. Don’t be under this misconception that you will make money on every first appearance you buy. While we’re talking about the female character introductions, some of them are doomed to fail just like their male counterparts. Is there a possible quick buck to be made here? Maybe, probably so, but a short window may leave many stuck with a comic that everyone already has a heads up on. Don’t be misguided into believing that every single first appearance will be a hit in the aftermarket immediately following its release.

So the questions a speculator should be asking themselves regarding a first appearance of a character (female or male) are; What impact will this character have within the grand scheme of things? Will this character have a profound affect on another character(s)? Is there something completely different about them that we haven’t seen before? Does the character have a story to tell? Are they relatable? Is the origin too complex? Are they in for the long haul? Will this character get special attention with their own series? Will the company push this character too much where it seems desperate to push fans to like them, which in turn shows there is a lack of a fanbase not possibly existing really and more so just hype. Are they related to another hero/villain?; which could be a quick “wow who really cares moment?” (See Angela). Do they even look like a winner? There are so many mitigating factors that go into this, you must have the knowledge, expertize and presence in mind to be doing this for many years to get some speculating calls right on point.

The new Marvel way is the female character. They have made it abundantly clear that they want to make the female presence a strong one in their universe, which is absolutely fantastic. There will be ones that simply do not work folks, be prepared. But with all of the new female heroes being introduced, when will that big female villain be introduced and what will happen to the market then exactly? Will there be an influx of female villains coming in? Lets not kid ourselves here. Marvel likes money. So does DC. So do all companies. They should, they’re in business to put food on the table for their families. They will push the envelope as far as it needs to go to make the fanbase interested in buying their comics. If that means the new hot thing to do is hype up a bunch of new female based characters, then they will do so. Soon enough though, the female villains will arrive in droves too. Be prepared for that. Then it will become a common core overused marketing ploy. But again, not all will be successful. So any hyperbole from new speculators or inexperienced ones arriving on the scene remember this; true speculators do not lead to slaughter, they guide them to think. Know the difference here.

Inhumans Attilan Rising #1 The first appearance of the Attilan land is in Fantastic Four #47 (1966). Important more so if you’re into first appearances of “land”. That said, Inhumans (as said here on InvestComics) will be huge in years to come. Does this mean that Attilan will gain some momentum in the aftermarket before the Inhumans become a household name in about 4 years? The way things are these days, probably yes. And only if Attilan is part of the Inhumans lure in the theater. But lest InvestComics remind you one more time, early Inhumans comics……buy buy buy.

The new Inferno comic hits this Wednesday. Inferno #1. The original Inferno story started (prologue) in Uncanny X-Men #239 (1988). It was a massive run in mostly all of the mutant books. It was a fun read then and it’ll probably be the same this time around as well.

The new Secret Wars 2099 #1 will be the first appearance of the new Avengers 2099. 2099 used to be a hot item back in the day. It ran its course and the whole love fest faded into obscurity. 2099 has appeared since yesteryear, but to no fanfare today as it once was. Maybe times will change and fans will except it once again. We’ll see.

Nova #31…….readers alert, surprise ending here. We love surprise endings!

Captain Canuck #1 was featured on the InvestComics free comic book day article in January 2015. Given the right creative team and guidance, Captain Canuck could be a hit. Having a David Finch variant helps to start things off too. There aren’t any of these variants available on Ebay right now. Hard one to get? Great variant though! His first appearance was in Captain Canuck #1 (1975).

Check out Fight Club 2 #1 from Dark Horse. At first glance, the Lee Bermejo variant looks like it has the Incredible Hulk on the cover. Seriously, check it out. Super cool right?

Indestructible Stingray #1; This IDW comic is going to be a good read. And just in case Stingray catches on, the first appearance was in Indestructible #1 (2013). Material #1 from Image Comics; a deep semi-political thought out comic. Very serious content in this book. Looks like an award winning Oscar movie put into comic book form. A new Avatar Press comic written by the legend/sometimes eccentric Alan Moore hits this Wednesday; Providence #1. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #46 sold out variant by Alberto Ponticelli.

InvestComics Hot Picks – New Release Comics on 12/24/14

Happy Holidays everyone!!

In the “In case you missed it” department. Check out the special InvestComics holiday comic covers article right HERE. The holiday article originally came out in 2011 right HERE.

Nova_InvestComics Superman_InvestComicsBe sure to check out the awesomeness of this Batman (2011 2nd Series) Annual #3 Wednesday. This story will be huge for a lot of readers according to DC. Too bad we don’t get the giant sized annuals anymore right?!

Grayson (2014 DC) Annual #1 will tell the secret origin of Helena Bertinelli (aka Huntress). Huntress first appeared in The Huntress #1 (1989).

DC promises some big changes for the Superman character next year. It may start in Superman (2011 3rd Series) #37 this week. Be on the look out for this one.

Superman and Wonder Woman will continue their battle with a new villain named Wonderstar in Superman Wonder Woman (2013) #14.

DC tops out their Hot Picks on InvestComics this week with Flash (2011) #37 and Robin Rises Alpha (2014) #1. Flash is a murderous one, which is awesome. And Robin is back with superpowers?! Put up some hot cocoa and sit at that kitchen table while everyone sleeps. Good reading here.

It seems as though Marvel may off someone again. Be sure to read Avengers and X-Men Axis (2014 Marvel) #9 to see who it might be.

Batman_Endgame_InvestComics Robin_InvestComicsIf you haven’t been reading Nova, now is a great time to jump aboard. Looks like Nova (2013 5th Series) #25; Nova is going through some changes and Marvel is making this issue an extra sized one and a jumping on point. There is an awesome Arthur Adams variant for only $20 available too. Maybe a book to get signed and graded. With the latest news that Nova will not see action in a Marvel movie, just means that it’s too early to speculate if that will hold up. Changes happen all the time in the movie business and I think we will see Nova in a movie eventually years down the line.

Image Comics this week will be busy on the speculative/readers side. Outcast continues its reign on the popularity contest. Just because Cinemax bought the rights from Kirkman, does not mean anything will ever become of it. Doesn’t mean the speculator should not be all over this comic, but it does mean to be wise. This holds true for ALL TV or movie developments or better yet, buyouts. Get Outcast (2014 Image) #6 this week and enjoy your story for what it is. Don’t bank on anything until you see more movement with Cinemax. Two must gets this week are They’re Not Like Us (2014 Image) #1 and Graveyard Shift (2014 Image) #1. Both look very promising on both sides of the spectrum.

Fathom_InvestComics Superman_Wonder_Woman_Wonderstar_InvestComicsThe late Michael Turner was one of the industries awesome talents. Gone too soon. One of his crowning achievements was the creation of Fathom. This week collectors get the first ever sourcebook of Fathom with a Michael Turner cover. Michael would have enjoyed the love Fathom still gets these days. Check out Fathom Sourcebook (2014 Aspen) #1. And speaking of Aspen, InvestComics hit on issue number one of Zoohunters as an interesting looking story. Check out Zoohunters (2014 Aspen) #2 coming out this week.

Just in time for Christmas is a comic by Cosmic Times. Not so much a Christmas story actually, but a “what if” story. A story about pondering ones own existence. This time of year, during holiday season, many of us do our own soul searching, our own reflecting from the the past year. InvestComics’ pondering says that in the future; What I.F. (one shot) will be at your local comic shop this Wednesday and should be bought.

Being a huge fan of sticker packs back in the 80’s, Garbage Pail Kids was one of everyone’s favorite. IDW will revisit the Garbage Pail Kids in their very own comic; Garbage Pail Kids Comic Book Puketacular (2014 IDW) #1. This is going to be fun!

What_IF_InvestComicsA cool softcover of Stan Lee will be hitting shelves this Wednesday. Look for Who Is Stan Lee? SC (2014 Grosset & Dunlap) BAM! POW!.

Marvel Comics loves to have that romantic X-Men cover every now and again. InvestComics had a funny checklist of all (most) of the romantic X-Men covers right HERE and HERE. We’ll have to add Cyclops (2014 2nd Series) #8 to the list!

Have a great holiday everyone.

X-force 37 (Apocalypse gains entry into the Celestial ship)

Any comic that sheds light on the origin of the world’s oldest mutant should jump in price.  In this case we get a glimpse into Apocalypse’s quest for power.  It’s a small tidbit but key to understanding the goals of a powerful mutant.

New Mutants 25 ( First David Haller/Legion ) New Mutants #26 ( first on cover )

300px-New_Mutants_Vol_1_26background

Bringing Apocalypse into the cinematic universe is a smart move.  Leading the next film into the AOA storyline would be wise too.   Sony like to adapt stories from the comics so Prof X’s son could be used and that means a whole host of comics will heat up on the back issue market.

X-Men 41 – Legion Quest (First Earth-295/AOA )

X-Men-41

X-Factor 23 ( first Archangel )

X-Factor-23

Everyone should have a copy of X-Factor 24. Simonson’s cover is still impressive all these years later and hey it’s the first appearance of Warren as Archangel right?  Nope.  He appeared in issue 23, in full and wasn’t named for many issues later.  This scenario reminds me of New Mutants 86/87.  Cable appears at the end of issue 86 but because of the iconic cover for issue 87 the actual first appearance isn’t noted.

X-Men 95 ( Identity of Death Revealed )

729465

At this point we do not know who the Horsemen will be.  I would like to see the original horsemen used but Fox likes to tweak the stories making Wolverine the central character.  If the do use him as Death I would want to own this one.

X-Men Unlimited 10

Dark Beast replaces Beast.  I remember a few characters who became quite popular during the AOA run.  Dark Beast was one of them.

Uncanny X-Men 317 ( Red Stripe )

She appears to be one of the more popular characters in the new film.  The enhanced cover is easy to find.  This one is a little more difficult.

X-Men Poster Magazine 4 ( First AOA Blink/ Dark Beast )

Unlike Bishop Blink was great in Days of Future Past!

This one is super rare and could be the first appearance of the AOA Blink and Dark Beast.  I am working to confirm the date of release on this but if you collect AOA related comics you should enjoy the hunt on this one.  It’s not going to be easy.

Tales from the AOA 2

age

I have mentioned this one before.  Why?  First published work by Brian k. Vaughan!

InvestComics Hot Picks – New Release Comics on 4/23/14

A few of the new comics this Wednesday will bring with them some debuts. It’s been a while within the InvestComics Hot Picks that we have had a week like this, so let’s relish in it for a bit!

Okay done relishing? Let’s get to business shall we?

One of the highlights this week has to go to Justice League United (2014) #0. There has been a lot of talk regarding the debut of Justice League Canada team and a major new Canadian character beginning with Justice League United #1. A special Justice League Canada #1 cover will also be in the mix regarding the new team. The fact is that DC’s version of Alpha Flight AND “Equinox” will both debut in the number zero issue, not the number one issue. So with this in mind, buy the new JLC #0 so that you’ll have the true first appearances. Then again, with the whole “cameo” nonsense within the speculation market, maybe you’re better off covering your butt and buying that number one issue when it comes out too! All of this to ponder (not really that hard, just kidding) with a $40 variant sitting out there! Your call on that one……

[scrollGallery id=347]

The Aquaman series is still going strong. A bit of a surprise no? Check out Aquaman (2011 5th Series) #30 for the debut of the New 52 version of Hercules. Not much you can change on that dude right? Come on DC, surprise us some more.

Looks like Marvel will be debuting new characters and reinventing some things in their soft relaunch of sorts. Daredevil (2014 4th Series) #2 will be introducing some new villain(s) (maybe) and will also have a forgotten Marvel hero come from the past and shake things up a bit. Fantastic Four (2014 5th Series) #3 will have the debut of the team called the Wrecking Crew. Check out their first appearance way back in 1974’s Defenders #17.

Elektra gets her third crack at her own series this week. Elektra (2014 3rd Series) #1 will come with several variants, but one stands against the rest for good reason. Mr. Elektra himself Bill Sienkiewicz will have a variant cover to buy if you’re interested. At a steep $60, it’s still a nice variant to pick up, grade/signature series with CGC, and hold onto it for a while. It will appreciate right away, but more so over time. The man is a legend. Daredevil #168 (1981) features the debut of Elektra. It’s still a well sought after book. It’s a gradual book to own, just like the Bill Sienkiewicz variant. Like a fine wine, ages with time!

There are two amusing Marvel solicitations to point out this week. Maybe not amusing to some, but still worth noting nonetheless. Iron Patriot (2014 Marvel) #2 bluntly states “James Rhodes dies”. How’s that to sell some books? How about the Guardians of the Galaxy (2013 3rd Series) #14 solicit dubbing Brian Michael Bendis as the “cosmic captain”. While we all love Mr. Bendis, and no disrespect here, but if he’s the captain, the General is Jim Starlin. Just saying.

Anyone remember how My Little Pony from IDW caught everyone by surprise in the spec market? Well don’t get caught without your hay in the barn again! Hasbro designer/illustrator of My Little Pony Gayle Middleton has created a new pony! Ghost Pony’s! Just be sure to spend an extra $3.99 this week to pick up Vamplets Undead Pet Society (2014) #1 from Action Lab Entertainment. There is a huge payday hidden here IF the numbers are right. Gayle Middleton will have a variant that is limited to 1000 copies. The variant is $4.99. Good luck finding that. If for some reason nothing pans out. Give the comic to your sister, niece, girlfriend, or donate it if you want. It’s only a $4.99 risk here.

(Insert sarcasm here) Another MAJOR event is on the horizon for Marvel. Original Sin (2014 Marvel) #0 will be the comic event equivalent to “Who shot J.R.?”. If you don’t know what that means, I’m truly showing my age. Google it, but anyhow, Nova runs up on a dead Watcher and someone killed him. Whodunit?! The Watcher knows, but he’s dead.

Secret Origins was always a fun read from DC Comics. Check out Secret Origins (2014) 3rd Series #1 as they bring back the awesomeness of things we didn’t know about our heroes/villains.

Also check out 7th Sword (2014) #1 from IDW Publishing and Conan Avenger (2014) #1 from Dark Horse Comics.

American Eagle_ScalpedLastly, a few weeks ago on March 18th I released a special article called “InvestComics Hot Picks Special: Speculating Marvel Comics – B Sides”. Within the article I mention this about the American Eagle character from Marvel Comics – …..”There is an influx of African American/female/foreign characters leading the way. Why not focus on an American Indian? Why not have a character that represents the foundations of America a mainstay within the Marvel Universe?” Well this past week InvestComics reported on the DC Vertigo title Scalped getting the development nod from WGN. You can check out that quick snippet right HERE.  Not to toot my own horn here, but things like this happen on InvestComics quite often. Sometimes there are misfires too, but there are more hits than misses around here. Stay close always; you never know what’s coming next!

…….Like Namor, yeah Namor. He’s going to be some sort of a factor. Be it now or in the not so distant future, but watch out for him. I’ve mentioned this before. This is a gut. Who knows…….?

23254_20060108193730_largeSee you soon. Invest wisely.

Carpe Diem.

New Faces. New Threats – Your First Look at NEW WARRIORS #1!

Aw yeah! The triumphant return of THE NEW WARRIORS, featuring Speedball, Justice, Nova,  Scarlet Spider written by Christopher Yost and drawn by Marcus To!!?? What’s not to love?

Witness the next generation of the Marvel Universe this February in NEW WARRIORS #1 – an all-new action packed ongoing series from blockbuster writer Christopher Yost and red-hot artist Marcus To! New Warriors mainstays Speedball and Justice are getting the band back together with a new team of heroes the likes of which you’ve never seen before!

“They’re eight people from different corners of the Marvel Universe, coming together to do the right thing, to be heroes,” says writer Christopher Yost, in an interview with Marvel.com. “They’re not kids, they’re not seasoned heroes for the most part, but they’re idealists. Sometime it’s okay to be a hero for the sake of being a hero; to be with a team because they’re your friends, because it’s fun.”

“Sometimes the world just needs saving,” continued Yost.

Evolution has gone off the rails. There are super humans, mutants, Inhumans, clones, aliens, and more everywhere you turn. Humanity no longer exists as the dominant life form on the planet. And not everyone is pleased! The High Evolutionary has raised an army to combat these “superior” beings – through complete extermination!

Now, Speedball, Justice, Nova, Scarlet Spider, Sun Girl, Hummingbird and more must stand together against the rising tide. Don’t miss a fresh start for the heroes of tomorrow this February in the exciting NEW WARRIORS #1!

InvestComics Hot Picks – New Release Comics on 12/11/13

Just a couple of weeks ago, InvestComics were making a statement on how important the Marvel Cosmic Universe will be in a very short while. Actually, InvestComics was reiterating what we have been saying for 7 years now. The particular comic and character we were speaking of was Nova. This week Nova comes into the fold once again. Nova (2013 5th Series) #11 promises to give readers of the Cosmic likeness a very very big surprise in this issue. Not sure what it is, even if I did know, I wouldn’t spoil it. The Marvel Cosmic Universe will have the Marvel U feel the effects, so buckle in tight fans. This is the beginning of what InvestComics has warned you about for years. The Marvel Cosmic Universe is about to take center stage. You best be on top of your Cosmic game.

[scrollGallery id=323]

Uncanny X-Men (2013 3rd Series) #15 will be an Inhumanity tie in with a “new comer” on board. The name is Kris Anka. One of the earliest works of this fine artist can be found in the Image graphic novel PopGun (2007). His earliest comic work came in Guarding the Globe #6 (Image Comics 2011).

Staying on topic with new creators in new places, check out Marvel Knights Hulk (2013) #1 with writer Joe Keatinge and artist Piotr Kowalski. If you are in the market for first works of newer creators, InvestComics can help you out with this one. Joe Keatinge’s first professional work as a colorists came in Masters of the Universe #4 (MVCreations 2004). His first writing duties came in Image Comics’ Ant #8 (2006). As for artist Piotr Kowalski; his first creative output came in his native country Poland in a book by the name Wiat Komiksu #4 (Egmont Polska 1998). His first American stint came in 2011 with Boom Studios’ Malignant Man #1 (2011). So not only do you get a great read with MKH #1 this week, but you get the inside scoop with the creators too from InvestComics. Mighty Avengers (2013) #4 Inhumanity tie in brings readers the New Ronin. The original Ronin first appeared in New Avengers #11 (2005) with that beauty of a David Finch cover. Huntress will be trailing a new villain in Worlds Finest (2012 3rd Series) #18. Check out who that will be. Looks like Owlman has some plans for Ultraman this week in Justice League (2011) #25. In the “in case you missed it department”, Justice League of America #29 (1964) gives us the first ever Ultraman. Doc Savage will get another crack at his own book this week in Doc Savage (2013 Dynamite) #1. The Doc may be appearing on the big screen as rumors do swirl all the time. Will it ever happen? If it does, look for a quick bump and then a quick flat line in his first appearance; Doc Savage magazine #1 (1933).

Comedy break; Two very funny solicits hit this week that have to make the reader/collector smile. First there was Superman Wonder Woman (2013) #3. The verbiage here reads “the ending of this comic is so shocking that it could mean the end of Superman and Wonder Woman together.” Really??! Kim Kardashian’s marriage to Kris Humphries may trump these two? We’re only three issues in DC please don’t threaten us with this already. Stop it, please. Too funny. Then you have Wolverine (2013 4th Series) #12. The verbiage reads like this “…the storyline the will change Wolverine as we know him forever!” Really??! Okay.

Now that we had our laugh, let’s get back to some other comics to check out this week. Three must get number one comics this week are sold out and will definitely see second prints following shortly. Krampus (2013 Image) #1, Lunita (2013 Amigo) #1, and Dead Body Road (2013 Image) #1. And for anyone keeping score here, Dead Body Road #1 will be written by Justin Jordan of the highly successful Luther Strode comic. A bit of a surprise with the almost sold out (will be probably by Friday/Saturday) Legends Dark Knight 100 Page Super Spectacular (2013) #1 this week. The reason for the surprise is the $9.99 price tag that accompanies the 100 page of goodness here. Fans are excited about the 100 pager for only $9.99 I guess. Way to go DC! Batman Black and White (2013) #4 brings in some fantastic talent once again. A must get every time it comes out. The future is now with Justice League 3000 (2013) #1. For no other reason than the super talents of Keith Giffen and J.M. DeMatteis on this book, it’s a must check out comic. Uttering the words “new hero” or “new villain” is music to InvestComics’ ears. Check out Cataclysm Ultimate Spider-Man (2013) #2 for the sweet sounds of a new hero. Origin issues are fun too. Check out Astro City (2013 3rd Series) #7 for the origin of Winged Victory.

Here’s a quick list of sold out or about to be sold out number 1 and number 2 comics from this upcoming week (Special thanks to Terry Hoknes for drawing this list up every week!!): Steampunk Cinderella (2013) #1, Code Red (2013 Zenescope) #1, Protectors Inc (2013 Image) #2, Day Men (2013 Boom) #2, Indestructible (2013 IDW) #1, Drumhellar (2013 Image) #2, Halo Escalation (2013) #1, Sherlock Holmes Moriarty Lives (2013 Dynamite) #1, Grimm The Warlock (2013) #1, and Brain Boy (2013 Dark Horse) #0.

That’s it, see you next week. Remember the contest! Let’s get InvestComics to 3000!

There are an abundance of comics to check out this week. The list is long, but the week is very soft. That said I’ll be sure to let you know which comics to put your emphasis on. Not much here, so look for those back issues.

InvestComics Hot Picks – New Comic Releases 11/27/13

One standout comic this week could be Nova (2013 5th Series) #10. Last week with the mention of Nova #19 (1978), many fans were very puzzled by this. I received a few messages on the board, Instagram, and personal email saying “Nova? Really?” Yes Nova, really. If you haven’t been paying attention, let me fill you in a bit.

Marvel Studios are about to embark on a whole new universe of pictures and change everything. Yes they are going to change the way movie goers watch “space/cosmic” films with the release of one film; Guardians of the Galaxy. What this particular film will do is open up the flood gates to introduce Marvel in space; their Cosmos if you will. Yes the film will have to fare well in order for the initial steps to be taken, to progress. If all goes well (which it should), Marvel Studios will be on their way to building a cosmic storyline on the big screen as no one has ever done before (besides Star Wars of course, calm down). Now there is one point though, which has been mentioned on InvestComics a few times, what about failure? What happens WHEN, not IF, When a Marvel Studios movie does not meet expectations at the box office? This will in fact happen, it’s inevitable. It will be very interesting to see how Disney reacts to the bad box office draw. One thing is for certain however, the comic book market will be affected to a degree. The prices will drop back into place where they probably should be and level off. The constant influx of various movies and television show announcements are driving prices batty for quite some time now. THIS will be the crash, NOT the variants, 3D covers, etc. The hyperbole will drive pricing back to reality if expectations are not met in the mainstream. Would you pay $10,000 for a Walking Dead CGC 9.9? Yes someone did. THAT is what you call a bad investment. $10,000 on a first appearance 9.9 of Green Goblin, Lois Lane, or even Wolverine makes sense. These characters are household names. Walking Dead is a hot zombie television show right now. It will eventually run its course and no longer be hot anymore. Granted, good story, good show, but its zombies….that’s it. Yes anyone can say “it’s about the character development and how we follow them” but in actuality, no zombies, no show. Not bashing the show, giving a dose of speculation reality here. Spending $10,000 on the number one issue is a bit of an oversight on that buyers part, but maybe, just maybe I’ll be wrong on this.

[scrollGallery id=321]

So back to Nova, as explained Marvel Studios will take the leap into space. It’s a risky one with Guardians because no one really knows of them. Rocket Raccoon will be the star in this one, so it’s best you stock up on him. Anyway, Nova has been mentioned in passing by Marvel and through some rumors. If Marvel is reaching out into the space universe, what’s not to think Nova won’t be a part of that? Same with Warlock, Silver Surfer, Death, and maybe Rom! Remember him? How cool would that be to have a Rom movie? Yes wrestling with that toy company can get dicey, but what Disney wants, Disney gets. What it all boils down to is making sure as a speculator that you have all of your Cosmic ducks in a row. Pick up the rare first appearance, those odd number one issues, the status quo change books, and the rare Thanos variants. It will pay dividends down the line IF the Guardians of the Galaxy movie does well. Nova (2013 5th Series) #10 will play pretend and solict this comic as the 100th issue. Gotta love the restarts, five of them for Nova to be exact here. The comic will come with all sorts of variants. The prize variant will be the JG Jones Incentive. A $60 book that can see some decent gains if handled properly. Nova #10 will star the NEW New Warriors (another potential space team down the road). Check out the first appearance of the New Warriors (“old team”) in Thor #411 (1989). A must own.

We like intros don’t we? Of course we do! Ultimate Spider-Man (2012 Marvel Universe) #20 will introduce a new villain named Whirlwind, so check that out. Kick-Ass 3 (2013 Marvel) #5 will do some introducing themselves with a new villain team. Infinity Hunt (2013) #4 plants the seeds of Marvel’s next major event. Are we tired yet of these major events? And speaking of Infinity, Infinity (2013 Marvel) #6 will conclude with an oversized issue as Thanos fights everyone! And incidentally, Iron Man #55 is Still a must buy. Avengers Assemble (2012) #21 hints at the team Inhumans. The Inhumans are about to have a breakout year next year. Get on top of Fantastic Four #45 (1965) for the first appearance of the Inhumans. Staying on topic with the Avengers, Avengers Arena (2012) #18 will see its final issue this week. With more death and a launching pad for something else. Something major will be happening in All New X-Men (2012) #19 so be sure to glance through that book. Damian Son of Batman (2013) #2 is sold out for the most part on the retail level. The variants are completely sold out. The Andy Kubert black and white variant would be a nice CGC sig series flip book. Forever Evil Argus (2013) #2 will highlight Deathstroke. One of the baddest dudes in the DC Universe. If you’re a regular reader of this column each week, you already know that InvestComics is a huge Deathstroke supporter. I have always felt that the Deathstroke character is on the cusp of some serious play, but DC doesn’t know exactly what to do with him (i.e. Nightwing). Yes they finally put him on television (sparingly), but that’s not enough. Get this guy going already. Bigger role on the show, movie appearances, chop chop DC! A huge recommendation throughout the years on InvestComics has been The New Teen Titans #2 (1980) and it will continue to be in BUY mode with InvestComics. And for those keeping score at home, Forever Evil Argus #2 variant is sold out, which means absolutely nothing on the speculator side of things. Geoff Johns will be hitting all out on Aquaman (2011 5th Series) #25. The conclusion to the “Death of a King” storyline. The new Superior Spider-Man event begins this week; The Darkest Hour in Superior Spider-Man (2012) #22. Venom will have his first run in with Superior Spidey in this issue. This should be very interesting. In the “in case you missed it” department, DC will release Sandman Overture (2013) Special Edition #1. The issue will feature a bunch of useless extras if you’re interested.

IDW will bring back a cult favorite in Sam Keith’s Maxx Maxximized (2013 IDW) #1. A collector can buy the first appearance of Maxx in the overprinted Darker Image #1 (1993).

Black Science (2013 Image) #1 will be THE Image Comic to grab this week. Already sold out at the retail level, but the $10 Midtown Comics variant will be the one to get if this comic makes an impact in the aftermarket. IDW’s Mr Peabody and Sherman (2013 IDW) #1 variant is sold out. Never Ending (2013 Dark Horse) #1, Quest (2013 Zenescope) #1, and Sledgehammer 44 Lightning War (2013) #1 are all on the verge of selling out.

MARVEL COMICS 2013 – Sold Out – Out Of Print Comics

MARVEL COMICS 2013 – Sold Out – Out Of Print Comics

Marvel is the #1 comic book publisher.  Their market strategy is to make sure their books sell out and not have any massive print run of books.  This causes them to quickly go to 2nd printings on most comics.

I have personally looked up every single Marvel Comic that Diamond currently has in stock.

MarvelComics2013SoldOut

This list includes all 52 ongoing titles as of August 2013 release date.

The list below is the exact list of all available comics (1st printings only) that you can STILL GET your local comic shop to order for you.

This list is also interesting because it shows which titles continually sell out each month.

If you are a speculator there are two things have to happen for a comic to go up in value.

First of  all Diamond needs to sell out, secondly most local comic shops need to sell out.

Therefore this list showing us what books have officially sold at Diamond will give you an idea of what books to hunt for.

Just selling out is still not a guarantee that a comic will go up in value.  BUT it MUST sell out if it will have any chance of going up in value in the future.   So far the most marked up back issues sold out that came out this year include Superior-Spiderman issues.

Thanks to Diamond Comics database for the most accurate details below.

Nova – Checklist

Nova Checklist.

Marvel’s cosmic epic The Guardians of the Galaxy is either shaping up to be the most ambitious comic film of all time or destined to be a rare mistep by Disney.   The truth is, it is hard to tell at this point which way it will all go down.  Recent news includes conformation of…

this guy as Yondu.  😀

Michael-Rooker

but this woman as Nova Prime???

f900c44c-282f-3542-b05a-96b192b94c87

So who knows?  But for purists some developments are signs of a troubled adaptation.  For every John C. Reilly as Rhomman Dey there is a Cosmo tease from the director that simply annoys or another WWE has-been cast as the muscle ( Drax the Destroyer ).

In the past I have highlighted some of the best GOTG comics to invest in.  With conformation of the Nova Corps ( FF 206,208 ) Nova appears to be a player and that’s great news.  Though his keys are limited here are some notable appearances.

Click on the RED links or the comic cover to buy/bid from All sellers on Ebay.

Fantastic Four Annual 12

This one is Nova ( Richard Rider’s ) first appearance outside his own title.  Wolfman writing the Inhumans make it worth the price in high grade!

46903_20110516083936_large

Daredevil 142

Another Wolfman tale featuring Nova in a title you normally wouldn’t expect to see him in.

7068_20070206084253_large

ROM 24

If you have never read ROM I demand you buy the full run and spend the weekend making up for past mistakes.   Like the Micronauts there are a few keys in the series.  #75 ( last issue ) and this early Nova appearance.

Click on the RED links or the comic cover to buy/bid from All sellers on Ebay.

29859_20060406181248_large

New Warriors 74, 75

The last issue of this Marvel Series saw the sales of the once mighty team book drop sharply.  As usual low print runs for later issues of a cancelled series often leads to significant increases in value.  Expect these  to do the same when the film comes out.

31444_20060501221632_large     31445_20060315085408_large

Nova 7

Another last issues with a low print run and a Larsen Venom cover!  Buy buy buy.

The Savage She Hulk 100

How many comics do you think are out there that have both Rocket Raccoon and Nova in them?  Oh and it’s written by Dan Slott with a Greg Horn cover!

22294_20060107100437_large

Annihilation Conquest 6

I will continue to recommend this one over and over again.  Collectors are fast realizing the importance of this issue.  The formation of this team has everything to do with the movie.  One can even argue that it’s importance far surpasses the first appearance of the original team which often sells for over 100 at auction.

Thanos Imperative: Ignition

This one-Shot has a breathtaking cover and is getting harder to find as are all Thanos appearances.  See my  report on the collectible Thanos some time before the movie hits.

Comic Broker Report – April 2013

The Comic Broker’s Report: April 2013

By Topher Seal

As my wife and I prepare our Groot and Rocket Raccoon costumes for this year’s Boston Con we realized that creating giant trees and massive guns out of PVC pipe and cardboard is a hassle.  This lead to a bet.  I believe that Rocket Raccoon is the next big comic character to enjoy mainstream success.  She’s putting her money on Doop.   She may be better than me at Killer Instinct Gold but I win all the bets and she knows it. So with so many awesome comics to speculate on this month I dedicate this article to my wife who personally approved all these selections with the exception of X-Force 116 ( newsstand ) which I see no reason to include.

Iron Man 54 ( First Moondragon )

11544-2407-12834-1-iron-man_super

I realize that not all members of the GOTG will be appearing in the film but with so many of Marvel’s Cosmic properties getting love it’s hard not to want this gem.  What I love about it is that the very next issue is one of the most sought after books on the market. If you want to own all the cosmic first appearances you have to buy the ones that fly under the radar too.  Personally I pass on Avengers 112 ( first Mantis ) and Micronauts 1 ( first Bug ).  I see too many copies of those books to recommend a buy.

Tales of Suspense 75 ( first Agent 13 and Batroc )

tales 75

George St Pierre is having a good month, first he retains his title against the laughable Nick Diaz and then we find out he’s playing the Captain America 2 villain  Batroc formerly of the French Foreign Legion!   I just hope the costume is exactly like the one he wears in the comics! It’s a strange casting and character to use and that’s why I love it!  This issue can still be found relativity cheap but I wouldn’t wait to buy.

Spawn 9 ( Newsstand only )

ispawn

God I cannot believe I am recommending a Spawn book but when Neil Gaiman says Angela is coming to Marvel collectors should pay close attention.  Once upon a time this comic was a hot commodity but like many from the 90’s it cooled off quick. A lot of negativity has been swarming around this character move but when she’s written by Gaiman it could be huge.  There are even rumors that she will be moved to the GOTG team after her introduction in the Age of Ultron!  Here’s the problem though…a ton of these were printed. For now it’s selling well  on the back issue market but how long can that last once the glut arrives?   The good thing is that there’s a newsstand version and it’s not that easy to find.

The Activity 1

I have to mention this Image dud only because it is generating a lot of heat online.  Issue one is selling for big money and the other issues are not far behind.  The only problem?  It’s not a quality read.  Seriously, this comic is poorly written and drawn. I’m not impressed by it and see it’s success as an anomaly in the marketplace.  If you can buy for pennies and flip for big coin then by all means do.  Hold at your own risk if you buy high, ( this book gets no picture because frankly it doesn’t deserve the time  and effort to track one down )

Adventures into Fear 13 ( First Nexus of all Realities )

fear

Savage Tales 1 ( First Ellen Brandt )

tales 1

Unless you are a fan of Man-Thing then you likely don’t know who Ellen Brandt is.  She’s been cast in the new Iron Man 3 film and is directly responsible for creating Man-Thing while trying to replicate the Super Soldier Serum.  Instead she helps create the Man-Thing,  guardian of the Nexus of Realities!  If you don’t know what that is I suggest you start with the issue above!  How Brandt will fit into the film is anyone’s guess but she’s connected to A.I.M. which will play a roll  and she also has connections to Doctor Strange who is going to be part of Marvel’s future film Phases!

Tales of Suspense 78 ( First A.I.M. )

The Incredible Hulk 272 ( Rocket Raccoon  appearance )

hulk 272

Recently I have beaten the importance of RR to death but here’s one more nugget for those who see Disney’s marketing potential for a wise cracking Raccoon with big guns.  Just try and remember how few appearance of him there are prior to the Annihilation events.  We all know that his first color appearance is in issue 271 but he also appears in flashback in the very next book!

Strange Tales 144

Actor Maximiliano Hernandez appeared as Agent Sitwell in the Marvel Studios shorts “The Consultant” and “Item 47.” With no Agent Coulson around Sitwell will be reprising his roll in Captain America 2.  Unlike Coulson who’s first appearance could be in Iron Man 2: Agents of Shield, Battle Scars 1 or 6, Sitwell’s first appearance is clearly defined.  Buy low and hold friends.

Amazing Spider-Man Annual 5 ( First Peter Parker’s Parents )

sr There is a 2nd Print ( Stridex Ad on Back cover )

If you have seen the most recent film then you know that Peter’s Father was the focal point of the after credit sequence.  Could this plot point lead to major implications down the line?  Who knows but that shouldn’t stop you from tracking down this forgotten annual ( especially the rare 2nd print! )

Fantastic Four 206 ( First Nova Corps )

four

Of all the cosmic characters I want to see on film Nova is probably 11th on the list right behind Cosmo the Dog.  Whether he or his corps are utilized in the upcoming film remains a mystery but as usual it doesn’t hurt to own an undervalued Bronze Age beauty!

The Defenders 27,28 ( First Starhawk )

Will Stahawk play a role in Marvel’s GOTG?  Even if he doesn’t these books are great reads and can be found for next to nothing at most comic shops with a comprehensive back issue section.

The Sword that killed Damian Wayne

Damian Wayne’s recent death is a tragedy and it’s not because another Robin has been slain.  DC received a lot of mainstream press for the death and while that may have generated sales I don’t see it a wise long term strategy.  Yes the character can always be brought back but for now readers have lost one of the few bright spots in the entire DCU.  Anyone who reads these speculative articles knows how I feel about DC’s reboot and the mess it has created in terms of continuity.  I assure you that fans of Damian Wayne and Batman in general will feel the negative effects of killing off such a wonderfully crafted comic book youth.

Since it has been revealed that Damian was killed with a sword that has deep ties to the Wayne family the hunt has been on for the sword’s first appearance.  Grant Morrison revealed that the sword appears throughout DC’s Shadow of the Bat, specifically the issues from the 90’s.  Upon hearing this I pulled out the long box and read every issue.  The only swords I found are a cutlass used by ancestors of Bruce and the Sword of Dumas which looks similar but is NOT the sword in question.  Anyone care to find it?  Tweet me @Larfleeze and receive a prize if you are correct!
