EXODUS: THE LIFE AFTER #3
Oni Press
Writer: Joshua Hale Fialkov
Art/Cover Art: Gabo

(Click on the comic cover or red link to buy/bid from ALL available Ebay sellers)

This is the most absurd premise I have seen yet,  God reveals the secrets of the Universe to Earnest Hemingway.

I love it.  I want more,  I want to go back to the beginning and see where this little gem of a comic came from.  Stories like this one are why I got into storytelling.  I simply can’t tell you how much I loved this.  This art style by Gabo, puts you in the characters shoes, I could see the story as if I were Earnest Hemingway, and the scary part, is I really got the perspective of the character of God in this story too.  It was hypnotically told and expertly revealed.  Fialkov has a writing style that reminded me of Stanislav Lem in this one, he contrasted absurd circumstances with profoundly deep points of view that few of us ever consider.  This is comedic literature in the comics medium at it’s best!

Bravo!  Now, if you are offended easily, best steer clear, but if you are into good dialogue, and have a strong sense of Irony, you may be pleasantly tickled by this entertaining little collection of coloured paper.

Batgirl #43 deals with the mysterious Velvet Tiger. She was first introduced in Detective Comics #518 (1982). This comic also happens to be an early Deadshot appearance with a fantastic Jim Aparo cover.

The Batman Arkham Knight Genesis #1 comic is one of those video game comic books. All the covers look absolutely stunning. Stjepan Sejic, Jim Lee and the Incentive cover (no name listed). In which the incentive cover is the best of the bunch in our humble opinion. The introduction of the new villain; Arkham Knight! Awesome comic here.

Superman vs Deathstroke in Deathstroke #9. This looks like a fun fight! In all actuality it should last a shorter time than a Ronda Rousey fight, but we’ll read and watch anyway.

In the Flash #43 solicit we are told a deadly new villain comes into the fray. His name is Folded Man. Well since DC is still living in this New 52 world where a “new” character is not really new, Folded Man was actually introduced back in Flash #153 in 1965. This comic also happens to have an early Zoom appearance.

Hank Johnson Agent of Hydra #1 features a Jim Steranko homage cover. Nick Fury Agent of Shield #4 (1968) and speaking of Nick Fury, S.H.I.E.L.D. #9 has all sorts of goodies in it. A must get and all of the variant covers are sold out already. A new Star Wars comic this week; Lando #3. Lando should be on your pull list. Any and all new Star Wars comics should be on your pull list.

More female superhero star power being introduced this Wednesday. This time from Dark Horse; the team; Zodiac Starforce in Zodiac Starforce #1. Also from Dark Horse, a critically acclaimed series gives fans a one shot; New MGMT #1Black Tiger #1 (Graphic India) is an introduction story of a new hero from creators Chuck Dixon and Graham Nolan. Stringers #1 from Oni press looks like it could be a sleeper. And check out the cool Robbi Rodriguez variant. Readers should be all over Valiant Entertainment’s Book of Death: Fall of Ninjak #1. IDW’s Drive #1 variant is sold out.

How does Diamond calculate the charts? It all starts at the comic book shop.

Data for Diamond’s sales charts — which includes the monthly market shares and all top product charts — are compiled by Diamond Comic Distributors from sales made to thousands of comic book specialty shops located in North America and around the world. Additional sales made to online merchants and other specialty retailers may be included as well.

Unit and dollar market shares are calculated based upon orders for comic books, graphic novels, and magazines invoiced and shipped to Diamond customers during any given month, which comprises pre-orders, advance reorders, and reorders, minus any copies that are received back from a title marked as returnable. Please note that comics marked with an asterisk (*) have had their reported quantities reduced due to retailer returnability, and thus may rank lower on the charts than their actual sales would reflect.

The New Titles Count Chart includes all titles that were invoiced by Diamond to retailers for the first time during the month and is not the official solicited title count for the month. Variant edition comic books and graphic novels at the same price point count as a single SKU. Variant edition comic books, lenticular covers, digital combo packs, and graphic novels at different price points count as separate SKUs for each edition.

Comic Broker Report – March 2014 (Updated)

There is nothing I can say today that will take me away from watching Season one of True Detective in one sitting.  You should be doing the same, right after you read this though!

Sgt. Fury and his Howling Commandos 27 ( First Eric Koenig )

93346_20070512152904_large

So Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. still has not sparked the interest as I had hoped it would.  Uninteresting characters ( not including Bill Paxton ) will do that but when Patton Oswalt was announced as reformed Nazi Shield Agent Eric Koenig, I started to smile.  The ranks of shield could start filling up with some wonderful characters from Marvel’s past but unless the clairvoyant is M.O.D.O.K. I sill won’t be pleased.

Young Men 24

ym24

Rumors of the Psychotic Captain America, William Burnside appearing as the villain in Captain America 3 have been a hot topic this week.  Early  reviews of The Winter Soldier have been overwhelmingly positive and Marvel has already started chirping about the third film in the franchise.  So who is William Burnside?

The general consensus is that he first appears here although he may have appeared earlier in  All Select 9 ( unconfirmed ).  Burnside is an interesting idea for a film antagonist.  He’s a man so obsessed with Steve Rogers he tries to become him!  It’s also possible he could appear in film as The Grand Director.

Captain America 231 ( First Burnside as The Grand Director )

first burnside as grand director cap 231

Captain America vol 5.  4, 7 ( 2006 )

1871_20050921180239_large2032489-04

These I like because of Brubaker, a man who will go down as the most influential Cap writer of the last 20 years.  Though Burnside is only shown via flashback in 7 they could be key down the road.  Considering the current importance of Issue 6, 6b,1 and the,14 reprint- I would buy now and hold.  Cap 153-155 are a good Bronze Age bet too!

Amazing Spider-Man 359, 360

736963

Collectors and buyers love them some ASM 361 and the 361 2nd print but Carnage’s roots can be traced back to issue 354.  These issues remain key to the development of the character despite their awful covers.  Also the cover to issue 361 is published first in issue 359.

Green Arrow ( new 52 ) 24     1 for 25 Variant Cover by Andrea Sorrentino

Arrow continues to surprise viewer with excellent episodes.   Bodyguard to Oliver Queen John Diggle is the best example of this.  He has become so popular that Jeff Lemire introduced him into the mainstream DCU in this issue:

arrow 24 first john diggle

but he actually appeared a little earlier in this 1:5 variant, out of continuity comic:

arrow 1 first john diggle

Note: There regular cover for this series is a photo cover.

Oni Color Special 2001

Ellen Page is going to star in Rucks’s Queen and Country.  I have mentioned Queen & Country 1 & the FCBD issue when the property was first optioned by Fox.  Don’t sleep on this issue though.  It features a very Early appearance of Tara Chace and one of her only appearances outside of Queen & Country.  The Powers appearances and cover don’t hurt either now that it too has been optioned by Sony for the Ps4.

40618_20060526101347_large

Action Comics 835 ( first in Continuity Livewire ),  Superman Adventures 5

supe adv 5 first livewire1081527

Here’s some major speculation for you.  Much like Squirrel Girl, I love oddball first appearances of cool characters that could see increases in value down the road.  Livewire represents what I love most about comics and selling them for profit.  The key appearances of Livewire are cheap.  They are a safe bet and if you buy them you will probably want to hang on to them whether the market on them changes or not.

The Clone Wars 1 ( First Ahsoka Tano )

lStar Wars Clone Wars 1 first Tano

With Disney and Marvel taking over from Dark Horse a new era for Star Wars Begins.  Over the last 20 years there hasn’t been much to rave about in the way of new characters though.   Tano is one great exception.  Grab her first appearance now especially if your a fan of a universe experiencing a major shift in structure.

Note: There is a variant for this limited to 1000 copies.

UPDATE:  Are the Hunters the next big problem for Rick and company on AMC’s The Walking Dead?  Seeing how appearances of supporting characters are lighting up Ebay, issues 61-66 ( Fear the Hunters ) will be even harder to acquire if this rumor proves to be true.  61 and 63 are already key books thanks to the first appearance of Chew.

Nova 19 ( First Appearance Marcus Daniels, Blackout )

58321_20070515211825_large

Agent’s of S.H.I.E.L.D. continues to add villains!  I just hope Blackout doesn’t wear his original costume!

The Inhuman 11

32726_20060315174933_large

Korath the Pursuer is coming to the GOTG film.  Yay.

I’m not sure if this movie can handle any more characters but in this case the 35 cent price variant is the one to track down!

HOTTEST New Comic Back Issues During May 2013

HotComics2013MayLogo

Top 50 Hottest Comic Titles during MAY 2013 – list by Terry Hoknes of HoknesComics.com

Just a personal list from my own observations of the market.  I believe these were the most demand and growing in value books this month.     I did not focus on variants specifically as I can’t even keep track of them all.    If you think I have missed any titles please let me know.  I will revise this list every month and you will be amazed at how much can change in one month good and bad.

The big news of the past month is that NBC announced they would not turn THE SIXTH GUN into a tv series.  This led to 50% drops in value for all issues and as spring kicked in there were many less buyers online causing an overall drop in price of all “hot” comics.

So May doesn’t really have any truly NEW hot books.  What we see is mostly a continuation of interest in the same books but mostly at a reduced price.   I expect this will stay true for the next 5 months but the big question is will prices and interest pick up again for these books in the fall.   Some fear the speculation boom of 2012/2013 has peaked and is now over.  It is possible however there will always be certain books that go up in value in any time period simply based on supply and demand.

Here are my picks of what I believe are the hottest comics of the last few years online based on back issue sales ABOVE cover price.

#1 INJUSTICE GODS AMONG US (DC) – the only hot DC title small print runs and 3rd prints selling out.  Currently at its hottest right now at $85.00 for set of #1-4      Many sellers with reprint sets that also sell well.   #1 2nd printing hit $12.00   #1 $50 #2 $25 #3 $10
