Animosity #2 – After-Shock Comics has their second consecutive sell out with this title. Best see what all the ruckus is about!

Forevers #1 – A new Black Mask comic. It will probably do what every other new Black Mask comic does. Sell out.

Norman #4 – There seems to be a trend brewing this week. This Titan Comics series has sold out since its inception (and upon our recommendations on each and every issue of course!). Look for the fourth issue to be no exception.

Samurai Brothers In Arms #1 – Titans Comics breaks into the top 5 once again. This debut is showing some nice sales from the early onset.

Flesh Of White #1 – Cosmic Times joins the ALL independent comic top 5 this week with their sold out comic.

Each week InvestComics seeks out a comic(s) on Ebay for $100 or less and then brings it to the attention of our fans. We call it IC 100 Club Pick. The idea is to get a great book at a great price. We do not own nor are we selling these comics. The comics are found by a random process. We do not know the ebay seller(s), nor are we promoting the Ebay seller. Any knowing from the Ebay seller of InvestComics or its affiliates is purely coincidental. (See disclaimer for more details).

IC 100 Club Pick: Forever People #1 (1971) 3.5. With DC Comics making their move on the big screen towards the Justice League movie, it’s really a matter of time before we see their answer to Marvel’s Thanos. Right?? It’s inevitable that fans see Darkseid’s mug as a teaser or as an image promo. Well actually we’ll see either the back of his head or his hand first, then we’ll get the mug later on, but that’s not really important right now. What IS important is this lower grade CGC first full appearance of Darkseid for a mere $99 with FREE shipping! This low grade will command more money in the long term than it’s worth right now. An absolute BUY right here. Get it before it’s bye bye!

Entering its sixth volume this week, Doom Patrol #1. This series will be written by fan favorite Gerard Way. We all know Gerard’s story right? Here’s a quick rundown if you do not know. Gerard Way is the lead singer/musician/songwriter of a rock band named My Chemical Romance. He broke into the comic book scene as a comic book writer back in 1994. The book; On Raven’s Wings #1 was put out by Boneyard Press. It wasn’t until free comic book day 2007 when Gerard really made waves within the reader fandom. The book was Dark Horse Free Comic Book Day 2007 featuring The Umbrella Academy. Fans accepted Gerard Way as the real deal and the rest is history. Gerard wrote his first Marvel comic in 2014; Edge Of Spider-Verse #5. This issue first introduced Sp//der.

Godspeed really makes his presence known in Flash #6. He takes over the cover and he’s a bad as*. Godspeed first appeared in Flash #1 Rebirth.
The star studded Batman series is back for its second issue this week. John Romita Jr. and Scott Snyder (with various others) bring All-Star Batman #2. As if the creative firepower isn’t enough, there is another Jock variant cover. We love the Jock covers! So much so……have you seen our Creator Spotlight checklist: Jock? Gotham Academy returns with a new series, Gotham Academy Second Semester #1. Coming back to write is Brendan Fletcher. Looks like a new character could debut, maybe. Check it out.
Readers will find out who Ultra Woman is in Superwoman #2. And that Terry Dodson/Rachel Dodson cover is absolutely awesome.

Titan Comics’ Mega-Hit Norman comic has a regular spot here every month. InvestComics mentioned Norman #1 back a few months ago with the warning to buy before it sold out. It sold out. We mentioned to buy Norman #2 before it sold out. It sold out. We mentioned Norman #3…..well you get the idea! So Norman #4 comes out this Wednesday, follow the same advice we’ve offered prior before you’re stuck picking up a second print…again. Titan Comics also has Samurai Brothers In Arms #1 coming out this week. That one looks like a good read.
Black Mask has a new comic coming out this week. You know what that means right? It means it’ll sell out very quick and fans will be scrambling to get a copy of the first print. So here’s your chance to get the first print of Forevers #1 before it sells out and the asking price is at a premium. This is all going on most of Blask Masks past history within the aftermarket.

Empress #1 – This “Saga” like comic from Mark Millar will be sold out in no time. Watch for this Marvel imprint from Icon to take off. One of the key components to its success will be that it has to be consistent on its release. Millar’s Nemesis, also from Icon, was a semi-success, but lost many fans because of delays. It could have been a bigger book (should have been), but delays will kill things fast. Empress + on time = success.

Star Wars Poe Dameron #1 – Almost every week InvestComics preaches the gospel about Star Wars comics from Marvel. We say to buy them because they are fantastic reads and for the possible first appearance that may explode at any time. This week we have a character from the latest Star Wars movie making their first appearance in a Star Wars comic. What more do you want here? Okay, maybe have your wife/girlfriend or maybe read it with your kid? That would be cool too.

Justice League Darkseid War Special #1 – Darkseid’s daughter, Grail, will be making her indelible mark within the DC universe this Wednesday. DC might be priming her for bigger things to come. Check out the InvestComics Hot Picks #418 for more info on this and about Grail’s first appearance.

Harley Quinn And The Suicide Squad April Fools Special #1 – One of DC’s all time greatest artist will grace us with his presence in this book. Jim Lee will pencil and do the cover art here. What more do you need? Refer back to the new Star Wars comic if you need more answers on that.

Superman #51 – A new story line begins; Super League. Be on the lookout for possible new villains or heroes in this epic Superman crossover event. We’ll probably say “told you so!”

Any knowing from the Ebay seller of InvestComics or its affiliates in purely coincidental. (See disclaimer for more details)

IC 100 Club Pick: Showcase #75 (1968) 7.0. This comic represents the first appearance and origin of Hawk and Dove. Story, cover and interior art from the legendary man himself, Steve Ditko. A 7.0 grade for only $90, with FREE shipping, gets this beauty in your hands. This a must in your collection.

Look for writer Mark Millar to turn things upside down with the debut of Empress #1 from Marvel’s imprint Icon. It’s already getting billed as Marvel Comics version of “Saga”. And we all know how Saga turned out. Mark will introduce fans to a whole new sci-fi world. Hollywood LOVES Mark Millar and we wonder if Marvel Studios would ever pick this up and run with it. Who knows? It could happen. Either way, this is an introduction comic in the vein of Saga, one to watch for here! This will be big.

The new Black Panther series makes its debut this week; Black Panther Vol 6 #1. The longest running Black Panther series lasted 62 issues. Many limited series, one shots, and team-up books over the span of six volumes for the character. Will this series ever make past 62 issues? We’ll see. But the first issue here is accompanied by an abundance of variants to choose from. Pointless, and the need for 13 different covers (at last count, probably more) is a bit excessive. The creative team makes for a must get though. Writer Ta-Nehisi Coates and artist Brian Stelfreeze will bring fans back again and again.

Marvel will introduce a new Star Wars character into their library. Star Wars Poe Dameron #1 will have the first comic book appearance of Poe Dameron. Poe appeared in the latest Star Wars flick and now he makes his way into the funnies. Regular InvestComics readers know how we feel about the Star Wars comics. Buy them all! This one here is so obvious that if you miss it, shame on you! Besides Empress #1, this is the other big Marvel book this week.

This week’s Justice League Darkseid War Special #1 will focus on Darkseid’s daughter Grail. A book simmering in the back issue bins on Ebay is Justice League #40 (2015), the first appearance of Darkseid’s daughter Grail. With DC maybe headed towards a Darkseid movie appearance, who’s to say they won’t take a page out of Marvel’s film franchise and include his daughter, a’la Marvel’s Nebula (Thanos). Right now JL #40 might be a gimme at $15….the same price as some worthless variant this week. Maybe getting Justice League #40 instead of a pretty cover makes more sense. Just saying.
There are plenty of DC comic covers by John Romita Jr. to choose from this week. DC is proud to have John Romita Jr. on their side instead of those “other guys”. Some may say or think this is the first time John is playing for the other side, but fans of InvestComics know we’re going to do our research! John Romita Jr. first drew some DC characters back in 1994. Not just “any” characters, he penciled Batman, Robin, Joker, among some others from the DCU. The comic was Batman/Punisher: Deadly Knights. Art by John Romita Jr. and written by Chuck Dixon. John also contributed to the awesome cover. Great comic, great story, Romita Jr.’s first DC work.

While on topic regarding DC’s past history. Bloodlines #1 debuts with writer J.T. Krul and artist Kenneth Marion at the helm. Bloodlines was a huge crossover storyline that took almost 6 months to hammer out back in 1993, spanning from August to December. The very first Bloodlines book was Lobo Annual #1 Bloodlines Outbreak. This comic introduced the Bloodlines Parasites.

Injustice Gods Among Us Year Five #7 features the first appearance of the NEW Nightwing.
It looks like Superman #51 could possibly introduce some new characters within its major new storyline crossing over all of the Superman titles; Super League Part 1 begins here. Keep an eye out on this series for new characters and villains.
Green Arrow will battle Deathstroke in Green Arrow #51. Fantastic covers from Patrick Zircher (regular cover) and John Romita Jr. (variant).

Grizzly Shark #1 from Image Comics looks interesting. Grizzly Shark first appeared in Sea Bear and Grizzly Shark #1 (2010). This Origin debut comic is written by Robert Kirkman. Ever heard of him? Art from the 2010 and 2016 Shark books; Ryan Ottley.

DC comics will run the table this week. Convergence is here and boy is it a biggie for DC readers. It will bring back the old, the way things were back oh so long ago. This July will make the New 52 a whopping 4 years old. So what to do after ALL of those years of making a new universe and never looking back? Bring back the old universe for a little while! Of course this is all dripping with sarcasm but all in fun here.

DC’s Convergence will probably make some noise at the comic shop registers, but what about the speculators? First off and very important here, the readers are in for a huge treat. Bringing back everything and making it all one big fat hunk of DC meat is pretty awesome. Readers are going to absolutely love this. This will not be as confusing as Multiverse in the least bit, so don’t shy away. Buy the series and follow the stories. A lot of fun here. Fun for the speculator will be within the back issues of DC’s first run of Convergence stories. Here’s why and how……

Besides the obvious flip of a hot signed/graded variant, if a character from the past makes their mark (or for the first time) in the Convergence story, you’ll have their first appearance because InvestComics told you about it. For example; Convergence Batgirl #1 will feature Stephanie Brown as Batgirl. Stephanie Brown (and as Spoiler) first appeared in Detective Comics #647 back in 1992. This comic on Ebay can be snatched up for $12 in some cases. If you don’t click that RED link you’re probably going to pay more in a few days. Stephanie Brown then went on to first appear as Batgirl (post crisis) in Robin #126 in 2004. There is a NM copy right now available for $5.99. Click the RED link, you know the drill. And then finally there is the solo Stephanie Brown Batgirl comic; Batgirl #1 (2009). At 99 cents on Ebay right now, yeah how can you go wrong here?

Batgirl_1_InvestComics Convergence_1_InvestComics (2) Robin_126_InvestComics

Convergence Question #1 will feature Renee Montoya as The Question. Renee Montoya first appeared in Batman #475 (1992). This book is in the $10-$15 range right now. Then Renee first appeared as The Question in 52 #48 (2007). These are offered at $3 a piece. And not that many on Ebay right now.

A pregnant Lois Lane will be in Convergence Superman #1. Over the many years of Superman comics and Lois/Clark having a ton of children (adopted, aliens, grown, and theirs) appear in the comics, there is only one cover we see Lois Lane actually carrying a child as a pregnant woman. Check out the cover to JLA Created Equal #1 from the year 2000. This is the only cover Lois Lane has ever appeared on where she is pregnant. What does this mean really for the speculator? Absolutely nothing, but still a neat nugget to know and to have in your collection as a conversation piece. It’s only a dollar on Ebay right now.

How about getting that New Teen Titans #16 (1982) comic InvestComics mentioned in the InvestComics Hot Picks #333 in August of 2014. Check out the cut out of what was said in that article.

Click on the RED links or comic cover to buy/bid on Ebay right now.

Captain_Carrot_InvestComics

From InvestComics Hot Picks #333 (August 2014)

So let start that movement shall we? Convergence Harley Quinn #1 will feature Captain Carrot and Convergence Speed Force #1 will feature a character from the Zoo Crew. The New Teen Titans #16 is the first appearance of Captain Carrot and the Zoo Crew. It’s a very affordable comic at the moment. No telling if the InvestComics Legion of fans will move the needle on this one. Here’s the things guys/gals, Marvel Comics has rejuvenated Howard The Duck, so DC Comics will be going with their bunny Captain Carrot. See how this works? Buy this first appearance, nothing to lose. No real down side here. Maybe a flat line, but an uptick can occur if DC pursues the rabbit for bigger and better things down the road. You never know.

….Speaking of a bunny. Convergence #1 has a sold out variant. The variant cover features the new Batman on the cover by Greg Capullo. Good luck buying this variant for under $99. A good quick flip if you score a high grade along with a signature(s) by Greg and the other creators on the book. This is currently the only sold out Convergence comic right now.

The rest of the Convergence titles to check out this week; Convergence Justice League #1, Convergence Nightwing Oracle #1, Convergence Titans #1, Convergence Batman and Robin #1 and Convergence Atom #1.

Some sold out comics to talk about. Please remember (as we have stated numerous times), sold out comics DO NOT equate to automatic money. Merely a heads up to speculators to determine if the value is worth the time to equate to more money. Lots of sold out comics never amount to anything. Do not determine your portfolio on buying sold out modern comic books, you will in fact lose money. With that said, here are some sold out books…..

Click on the RED links or comic cover to buy/bid on Ebay right now.

52_48_InvestComics Batman_475_InvestComics Convergence_1_InvestComics (7) Detective_Comics_647_InvestComics

Marvel killed Wolverine and they are out for more blood. This time they will be offing Deadpool in Deadpool #45. No worries, he’ll be back. But for now he’s going to be taking a dirt nap. The Skottie Young ($60) and Tony Moore ($125) variants are sold out. And a sold out “3000 copies” available Amazing Spider-Man #300 homage cover.

Howard The Duck #2 features a “bling” variant with the Duck and a Raccoon on its cover. A sold out variant that is a nice novelty item. No long term upside here, unless these two wind up doing a team up movie. Only one on Ebay at the current moment at $76.

James Patterson writes big boy books with no pictures. He’s a worldwide best selling author and Max Ride First Flight #1 will be based on a best selling novel. Probably a good bet to check out this comic. The Dustin Nguyen variant is sold out. Here’s a way to get a nice book in your collection and increase the value of your $10 sold out variant. Get Dustin Nguyen and James Patterson to sign your book. Of course a witness and high grade will help too!

Back in 1989 Guns N’ Roses made their comic book debut in Rock N’ Roll Comics #1. While it was a hot book back then, even a hot series actually, it was a dollar short and a day late. The comics featured a ton on great 80 rock hair bands as their featured stories. So what is the problem you ask? Well the first Rock N’ Rock comic came out in 1989 as the hair band sound/scene was dropping off. In the very early 90’s some band by the name of Nirvana changed the entire complexity of the rock scene. No more hair bands! Rock N Roll comics continued to put out comics on Poison, Queensryche, Kiss just to name a few. Those were the days though! Speed to the year 2015. Some of those 80’s bands withstood the test of time and made sure they stuck around and remained relevant. Metallica, Bon Jovi and Ozzy are just a few. Slayer is also one of those bands that made their relevancy past the new millennium. This Wednesday Rock and Roll Biographies Slayer #1 will debut. An all new rock n roll comic. A sold out regular cover and variant here. There are so many bands cramped up inside this comic, it’s a wonder how Acme Press pulled this off. So want a real challenge? A one of a kind comic? Get Judas Priest, Testament, Green Day, Slipknot, Social Distortion, NOFX, Exodus, Primus and Faith No More to sign the comic. The REAL challenge isn’t getting these great bands to sign your book, the REAL challenge is getting a high grade on the book when you get it graded! Almost near impossible really. Does beer on a cover take down a grade?

Click on the RED links or comic cover to buy/bid on Ebay right now.

Convergence_1_InvestComics (4) Convergence_1_InvestComics (8) New_Teen_Titans_16_InvestComics

Okay no more talk on the sold out books, let’s talk Aspen Comics. Yes a rare appearance by Aspen here on the InvestComics Hot Picks. Not one, but two Aspen comics to check out this week. Four Points #1 is an all female team written by Scott Lobdell. And the other Aspen comic is Lola XOXO #1. Lola first appeared in the free comic book day; Worlds of Aspen 2014. With all of the strong female leads these days from the big two, it’s important to point out other leading ladies from the other companies too. Never know too, maybe another Tomb Raider type character can emerge and get to kicking some as* on the big screen one day. Never know! Either way, these comics look like an enjoyable read.

Image Comics has a lot to offer up this week. Savior #1 has Todd McFarlane on writing duties. He’s not penciling here, just writing. Even if he was penciling, doesn’t really mean much in the speculative world (see Haunt). Here’s the thing with Todd. He’s a legend, but a legend on two characters. For the newbie’s reading, those two characters are Spider-Man and Spawn. Not to diminish anything Todd has done, he’s an amazing artist. Very awesome. Just simply pointing out that most fans really want to see Todd work his magic on those two characters the most. Whenever Todd does do something new, fans go bonkers at first and then the dust settles. Fans go bonkers when he draws, not writes. Therein lies the issue with Savior #1. Not saying it won’t be a good book, but fans want to see Todd draw. That’s what he does best. He’s come a long way since writing the Spider-Man books (15 total) for Marvel all those years ago. 25 years ago to be exact. Wow time flies! So what to do about Savior #1 you ask? Very simple, buy it, read it and enjoy it. Maybe it’ll hit, maybe it won’t. It all really depends if this story strikes a chord and creates a buzz. It’s really a wait and see with Savior #1 as far as the speculative market is concerned.

Two Image Comics series come back into the fold this week with an all new story to tell. The popular Jupiter’s Legacy from 2013 makes its return this Wednesday with Jupiter’s Circle #1. Mark Millar returns as writer, as artist Frank Quitely will be doing only the cover this time around. Enter artist Wilfredo Torres. Wilfredo’s earliest work (first work?) is in Salem: Queen of Thorns #0 (Boom Studios). The other Image Comic returning this Wednesday is Legacy of Luther Strode #1. The original creative team from 2011’s The Strange Talent of Luther Strode is back. The 2011 Luther Strode was very well received. Surprised its taken so long to get another Strode story going.

Click on the RED links or comic cover to buy/bid on Ebay right now.

Also from Image this week are two followups to hot number one comics. Lets see what Descender #2 will bring after the sold out number one hit. And let’s see what Southern Cross #2 is able to do as well. Fans are really digging both of these series right now.

InvestComics gave readers/speculators a heads up on Astronaut Ink’s New Zodiax #1. This week New Zodiax #2 hits. A well received number one issue and probably a well received number two issue coming up.

Darth Vader #4 features the revenge of the Battle Droids. What does this mean exactly? Only one way to find out. Ant-Man #4 might feature a debut as well. Only one way to find out!

Comic Broker Report – Undervalued Moderns Special

The market can be slow to reflect the value of certain issues.  This can happen for many reasons.  Each month I try to give readers the opportunity to get in on a sleeper well before the market catches up.  Though I am not always right I try to select comics that are worth collecting even if you might never make a penny on the fast flip.  I have featured some of these comics in the past.  They make this list because they remain largely unknown to the collecting community.

Batman Volume 1 Issue 656

Batman_656

If you are looking for Damian Wayne’s first full appearance then here ya go!  Issue 655 along with its variant and other printings are often the ones collectors want but they only feature Batman’s son in shadows.  This issue is where we get to see the league trained badass for the first time!

Iron Man,Incredible Hulk,Nick Fury       Iron Man 2: Agents of Shield ( second appearance )

images Iron_Man_2_Agents_of_S.H.I.E.L.D.

It’s odd to me that Agent Coulson’s first appearance is so undervalued.  It’s pretty tough to find and features a character that is loved by most Marvel fans.  With Agents of SHIELD getting better with each episode I hope these two comics see significant increases in value.

Battle Scars 1,6

Battle_Scars_Vol_1_1 background

So if you don’t appreciate Coulson’s first actual appearance in a comic then you can pick up these two which feature his first appearance ( and named appearance ) in the regular Marvel Universe.

Th Invincible Iron Man ( 2008 ) 10,11

Ok there are a ton of these to hunt down.  Why?  Well recently the actor who voiced Iron Man’s A.I.  J.A.R.V.I.S. told us he’s playing the Vision.  This means that the A.I. that Stark created is becoming one of the most popular Avengers in the next film.  The Vision first appeared in Avengers 57 and it highly valued.  But as the film version will be bringing the Stark A.I. to life as an android,  these comics should be worth a lot more than the currently are.  Issue 10 features the first appearance of the RESCUE armor, made for Pepper Potts by Tony.  In Issue 11 we learn that the A.I. system in her armor is the J.A.R.V.I.S intelligence!  That makes these issues the first comic appearance of the intelligence system which will become the Vision in Avengers 2.  So far the hardest issues to find are the second print for issue 10.  This us due to the first cover for RESCUE.  Issue 10 has variants, the hardest one to find being the secret retailer variant.  The only way to tell is a barcode variation pictured above!

Elektra Assassin 2

7347_20061004163330_large

Ok I admit I am a huge Bill Paxton fan.

Once we learned that his character on A.O.S. was secretly a Hydra agent this book should have seen some market action.  It has a wonderful cover and is written by an industry great.

Action Comics 471

index

Despite many who were disappointing by the Man of Steel I have come to realize that it is a very good film.  Russel Crow actually steals it along with Zod’s top soldier Faora who first appears  in this issue of Action Comics.

Supernaturals 4

16901_20070524221442_large

It’s still amazing to me that Groot is coming to a theater near you in August.  For a character with less that 5 pre Copper Age appearances it just seems insane that an Alien like this is being thrust into the mainstream. To my knowledge this issue is his first appearance in the modern age.  This series inserted masks into the issues and I believe the ones with the Ghost Rider mask are the hardest to find.

Chuck Norris  and the Karate Kommandos 1

53442_20060801052851_large

First appearance of this legend is all you need to know.

Captain America 208, first appearance of Arnim Zola

If you geeked out as much as me with Zola’s incredible appearance in the Winter Soldier then I applaud your love of insanely twisted comic villains!

Comic Broker Report – JULY 2013

Batman and Robin Vol. 1 #1 ( first Mr. Toad ) & Batman 666 ( first Prof. Pyg )

Batman_and_Robin_Vol_1_1_Sketch

Beware the Batman is already a polarizing  show.  With episode 1 airing this past weekend to mixed reviews one thing is clear-Professor Pyg and Mr. Toad stole it.  Despite Pyg’s altered origin I am already clamoring for their next animated appearance.  Batman 666 is already a well documented collectible but in the case of Batman and Robin 1 there were a lot of printings.  I suggest the latest printing and the 1:250 Frank Quitely variant.

Evil Ernie Straight to Hell 1 ( Chromium Variant )

thumbnail.asp

More film rumors should drag this forgotten comic up from the ashes of an age some would like to forget.  Chastity first appeared in issue one of this 5 part mini from Chaos.  Her movie rights have been snagged by a reputable studio and this is def the rarest of the series.

Avengelyne Chromium Maximum Signed Edition

avengelyne-1-chromium-cover-3960x30331043545

What are the odds that two bad girl comics could return with a fury?  In this case Avengelyne has multiple first appearance issues.  There’s a direct chromium, newsstand cover variant with or without the gold stamp and 2 chromium signed editions.  The Artifex signed is super rare and should be considered her most valuable comic to date.  If it is proven later that the ashcan ( which there are a few color variants of ) should predate issue one then that will be considered her first appearance.

Detective 685 ( First Appearance Silver Monkey )

Detective_Comics_685

Not much has been revealed about the new Batman animated series but creators have confirmed that the Silver Monkey will be appearing!  Buy the newsstand edition if you can and the DC Universe UPC variant if there is one!

X-Men 128

New_X-Men_Vol_1_128

In case you haven’t noticed Fantomex is quietly become the next big Marvel character.  Now this book has been hot for a while but CGC 9.8’s can still be found for under 100 and a new series should only generate more value. Oh and enjoy the detail of this cover by one of the best cover artists working today!

Uncanny X-Men Annual 15 ( newsstand ) & X-Men Second Coming 2 ( 1:50 Finch Variant )

uncannyannual15999297

Over this past weekend the news broke that X-Force will see a film adaptation.  Though this is less surprising than  a GOTG film announcement  it appears that Marvel is willing to film any property Disney owns.  How long before a New Warriors movie?  Soon I will be posting a collecting X-Force article but until then the speculation will be on which version of X-Force will be produced.  In the case of the GOTG, collectors don’t seem to mind that the film version will be vastly different from the true first appearance of the team.  Sticking with that model it seems prudent to buy these two first appearances.  As far as the annual goes the print run was high but it has a cover by Mignola which this collector always appreciates and a newsstand edition.

Secret Warriors 4

images

No variants for Manifold’s first appearance make this one rare enough.  I don’t really get the fascination with the character but he’s used often by Marvel and is a fan favorite.

Otazine GN

515N11A1PPL

My recent article on collecting Brandon Graham featured some comics with work also done by the creator of the rare Orc Stain comics by Image.  This corporate Manga just happens to be the first published work by James and is quite rare.

Think Tank 1 Variant SDCC 2012

7536353196_7e8bdffdda_z

Rumors are swirling around this Image comic as a possible film or TV show.  If you have not read it I suggest an immediate trip to your LCS.  There are plenty of copies still out there just not this edition.

More GOTG film fun:

Another GOTG  villain announcement  puts Nebula in the film and that’s good for Copper Age collectors.  Look for 257 to see gains but 260 gives the reason why she would be in the film in the first place!

Tales to astonish 23

Tales_to_Astonish_Vol_1_23

So Spawn’s Angela made her debut in the forgettable Age of Ultron series from Marvel this past month.  No one is sure what to make of the move but one thing to note is the rarely seen alien race traveling with her-The Moombas!  They first appeared in this hard to find classic.

Carrie Kelley – Checklist

Carrie Kelley is being introduced in this month’s issue of Batman and Robin.  While DC has little to say about the direction of the character, fans and collectors should look for these books to see market gains. Even if she doesn’t end up as Robin her introduction into New 52 continuity has generated more positive interest in a replacement for Damian Wayne than Harper Row or even Stephanie Brown.  Whatever her Role is it’s encouraging that she is going to be included in arguably the best Batman title currently running.

This one is a bit obvious but is always tough to find cheap and in high grade.  It will forever be included in comics canon and should be placed in that part of your collection that you just cannot seem to part with.

Mazing Man 12

Mazing_Man_12_00

This oddball series concluded with a pretty bad ass  cover featuring Carrie Kelley.  It’s quite rare these days and it’s a last issue so the print run is low.

The Comics Journal 101

$T2eC16VHJF8E9nnC7N5zBRYwl42BLg~~60_57

Anyone remember the Comics Journal?  This series is a must read for both comic scholars and collectors.  This issue’s white cover features Carrie Kelley as robin and an interview with Frank Miller, making it a rare treat.  I doubt t any would make the 9.8 grade but it’s gem no matter what condition you may find it in.

Click on the RED links or the comic cover to buy/bid from All sellers on Ebay.

Batman: Brave and the Bold 13

300px-All-New_Batman_The_Brave_and_the_Bold_Vol_1_13

Kids comics can be very difficult to track down depending on where you live.  This one is no exception and feature an all Robin cover by Rick Burchett!

Batman and Robin Adventures 6

Batman_and_Robin_Adventures_Vol_1_6

Here is another example of a Carrie Kelley kid’s comic that is going to be tough to acquire,  especially in NM.  These comics tend to be handled more making them that much more collectible.

Comic Broker Report – April 2013

The Comic Broker’s Report: April 2013

By Topher Seal

As my wife and I prepare our Groot and Rocket Raccoon costumes for this year’s Boston Con we realized that creating giant trees and massive guns out of PVC pipe and cardboard is a hassle.  This lead to a bet.  I believe that Rocket Raccoon is the next big comic character to enjoy mainstream success.  She’s putting her money on Doop.   She may be better than me at Killer Instinct Gold but I win all the bets and she knows it. So with so many awesome comics to speculate on this month I dedicate this article to my wife who personally approved all these selections with the exception of X-Force 116 ( newsstand ) which I see no reason to include.

Iron Man 54 ( First Moondragon )

11544-2407-12834-1-iron-man_super

I realize that not all members of the GOTG will be appearing in the film but with so many of Marvel’s Cosmic properties getting love it’s hard not to want this gem.  What I love about it is that the very next issue is one of the most sought after books on the market. If you want to own all the cosmic first appearances you have to buy the ones that fly under the radar too.  Personally I pass on Avengers 112 ( first Mantis ) and Micronauts 1 ( first Bug ).  I see too many copies of those books to recommend a buy.

Tales of Suspense 75 ( first Agent 13 and Batroc )

tales 75

George St Pierre is having a good month, first he retains his title against the laughable Nick Diaz and then we find out he’s playing the Captain America 2 villain  Batroc formerly of the French Foreign Legion!   I just hope the costume is exactly like the one he wears in the comics! It’s a strange casting and character to use and that’s why I love it!  This issue can still be found relativity cheap but I wouldn’t wait to buy.

Spawn 9 ( Newsstand only )

ispawn

God I cannot believe I am recommending a Spawn book but when Neil Gaiman says Angela is coming to Marvel collectors should pay close attention.  Once upon a time this comic was a hot commodity but like many from the 90’s it cooled off quick. A lot of negativity has been swarming around this character move but when she’s written by Gaiman it could be huge.  There are even rumors that she will be moved to the GOTG team after her introduction in the Age of Ultron!  Here’s the problem though…a ton of these were printed. For now it’s selling well  on the back issue market but how long can that last once the glut arrives?   The good thing is that there’s a newsstand version and it’s not that easy to find.

The Activity 1

I have to mention this Image dud only because it is generating a lot of heat online.  Issue one is selling for big money and the other issues are not far behind.  The only problem?  It’s not a quality read.  Seriously, this comic is poorly written and drawn. I’m not impressed by it and see it’s success as an anomaly in the marketplace.  If you can buy for pennies and flip for big coin then by all means do.  Hold at your own risk if you buy high, ( this book gets no picture because frankly it doesn’t deserve the time  and effort to track one down )

Adventures into Fear 13 ( First Nexus of all Realities )

fear

Savage Tales 1 ( First Ellen Brandt )

tales 1

Unless you are a fan of Man-Thing then you likely don’t know who Ellen Brandt is.  She’s been cast in the new Iron Man 3 film and is directly responsible for creating Man-Thing while trying to replicate the Super Soldier Serum.  Instead she helps create the Man-Thing,  guardian of the Nexus of Realities!  If you don’t know what that is I suggest you start with the issue above!  How Brandt will fit into the film is anyone’s guess but she’s connected to A.I.M. which will play a roll  and she also has connections to Doctor Strange who is going to be part of Marvel’s future film Phases!

Tales of Suspense 78 ( First A.I.M. )

2678763-talesofsuspense78_super

See above!!!

The Incredible Hulk 272 ( Rocket Raccoon  appearance )

hulk 272

Recently I have beaten the importance of RR to death but here’s one more nugget for those who see Disney’s marketing potential for a wise cracking Raccoon with big guns.  Just try and remember how few appearance of him there are prior to the Annihilation events.  We all know that his first color appearance is in issue 271 but he also appears in flashback in the very next book!

The Incredible Hulk Annual 5  & Weird World Tales 19

imagesimage

More GROOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Strange Tales 144

images

Actor Maximiliano Hernandez appeared as Agent Sitwell in the Marvel Studios shorts “The Consultant” and “Item 47.” With no Agent Coulson around Sitwell will be reprising his roll in Captain America 2.  Unlike Coulson who’s first appearance could be in Iron Man 2: Agents of Shield, Battle Scars 1 or 6, Sitwell’s first appearance is clearly defined.  Buy low and hold friends.

Amazing Spider-Man Annual 5 ( First Peter Parker’s Parents )

sr There is a 2nd Print ( Stridex Ad on Back cover )

If you have seen the most recent film then you know that Peter’s Father was the focal point of the after credit sequence.  Could this plot point lead to major implications down the line?  Who knows but that shouldn’t stop you from tracking down this forgotten annual ( especially the rare 2nd print! )

Fantastic Four 206 ( First Nova Corps )

four

Of all the cosmic characters I want to see on film Nova is probably 11th on the list right behind Cosmo the Dog.  Whether he or his corps are utilized in the upcoming film remains a mystery but as usual it doesn’t hurt to own an undervalued Bronze Age beauty!

The Defenders 27,28 ( First Starhawk )

13911-2569-15579-1-defenders-the_superDefenders_Vol_1_28

Will Stahawk play a role in Marvel’s GOTG?  Even if he doesn’t these books are great reads and can be found for next to nothing at most comic shops with a comprehensive back issue section.

The Sword that killed Damian Wayne

Damian Wayne’s recent death is a tragedy and it’s not because another Robin has been slain.  DC received a lot of mainstream press for the death and while that may have generated sales I don’t see it a wise long term strategy.  Yes the character can always be brought back but for now readers have lost one of the few bright spots in the entire DCU.  Anyone who reads these speculative articles knows how I feel about DC’s reboot and the mess it has created in terms of continuity.  I assure you that fans of Damian Wayne and Batman in general will feel the negative effects of killing off such a wonderfully crafted comic book youth.

Since it has been revealed that Damian was killed with a sword that has deep ties to the Wayne family the hunt has been on for the sword’s first appearance.  Grant Morrison revealed that the sword appears throughout DC’s Shadow of the Bat, specifically the issues from the 90’s.  Upon hearing this I pulled out the long box and read every issue.  The only swords I found are a cutlass used by ancestors of Bruce and the Sword of Dumas which looks similar but is NOT the sword in question.  Anyone care to find it?  Tweet me @Larfleeze and receive a prize if you are correct!

Comic Broker Report – Modern Variant Special

These days variant comic covers are the chase cards of the comic market.  Personally I don’t seek them out unless I can find them for cover or at a reasonable price.  This rarely happens.  Most comic stores make a lot of their weekly profit from selling these issues to their local customers or online.  Whatever your collecting/investment strategy, you cannot deny that publishers who limit the availability via print run do so because it helps them sell comics.  I know many dealers, store owners and collectors who wish they would just go away but that will never happen.

The following variants are the ones I would invest in:

BATMAN 12 ( Limited 1 for 100 Variant Cover by Greg Capullo )

This issue by Snyder and Capullo features the third appearance of Harper Row ( Batman1,7 ).  A lot of folks are betting heavy on earlier issues featuring Row thinking that she’s the next Robin.  Until her true first appearance is agreed upon I can’t recommend either issue 1 or 7 which both have extremely rare Sketch variants of their own.  This issue is intriguing because of its rarity along with it being the first appearance of Harper’s brother Cullen.  Cullen seems a bit unstable to me and who knows how much of an effect a vile, neglectful father may have upon him.  Cullen is also a homosexual teen who has experienced hate crime.  Little is known about him but Snyder has given him a complex background and that’s a good start when it comes to purchasing.

BATMAN INCORPORATED 5 ( Limited 1 for 100 Variant Cover by Chris Burnham )

Grant Morrison returns us to the 666 universe where Damian Wayne is the Batman!  As one of the more popular dytsopian futures in comics, it’s no surprise that this issue is on this list.  Burnham’s cover is one of my all time Batman favorites! Though I love the fact that issue 666 of Batman Vol. 1 has no variant and is highly sought after, I can appreciate the value of this work, which stands out amongst many other DC titles.

Thor God of Thunder 2 ( Limited 1 for 50 Varaint Cover by Daniel Acuna )

One of my favorite new comics, Thor God of Thunder continues to impress with great art and storytelling.  If I were writing the Thor films I would make sure to factor Gorr the God Butcher into any future Phases.  If you read comics long enough you can sometimes feel as if you have seen and read everything so it’s a pleasant feeling when something fresh comes along!

Batman 655 ( Kubert 1:10 Variant )

Ok so recently I have been trying to convince people who care that Damian Wayne’s first appearance is NOT in this book but in issue 656 of Batman.  You see Damian only appears in shadows in this issue.  We don’t see his face until the following issue.  With his death making national news it’s become clear that Bruce’s son has resonated with readers and collectors.  Until the masses agree that 656 is his first this is the one to buy and it features an outstanding variant cover by an industry great!

Guardians of the Galaxy Volume Two 8  ( Thanos Variant Cover )

Thanos is the big bad villain in the room over the next few years and with a GOA film coming in 2014 any combination of the two equals a wise investment.  These can still be found lurking in back issue boxes.  It’s an undervalued comic with lots of growth potential.

Captain America Reborn 6  ( Limited 1 for 25 Variant, Cap sees the Age of Ultron Future )

So earlier this month I recommended these two in another article and here is why-It’s still unclear how the Age of Ultron will turn out but we all know the recipe for success in sales can easily lie in how well you construct your final act.  Rumor has it there is a super surprise ending to this series penciled by Joe Q.  If it pays off then these are back issue gold.  If not well…..

Comic Broker Report – March 2013

The Comic Book Broker’s Report ( March 2013 )

By Topher Seal

Most of us who collect comics also collect other things and while I believe that none of you want to know how I acquired a hang nail from Red Sox Slugger David Ortiz, I can assure you that there is plenty of comic related material worth investing in. But collecting in multiple markets creates its own set of problems.  Years ago I streamlined my collection and stopped purchasing action figures, posters and other materials simply because storage was becoming an issue.  Once you start building a collection it can quickly spiral out of control.  Example:  I had to find a creative use for long/short boxes so instead of telling my wife that a storage unit was in our future I removed all the bed frames, sold the metal for scrap and used one layer of boxes per bed to replace the frames.  With a little effort I was able to create tunnels for cats under each bed!  Everyone’s money has to go to many things each month so identify what you love and go for it just don’t try and collect everything,  you will go broke and probably lose a spouse or the love of your parents.

Star Wars Galaxy 2 ( bagged )

645741

With the announcement that Chris Carter will create Season 10 of  The X-Files, back issues should see gains.  The ones I like: Issues 40,41  ( Both Photo Cover Variants ) of the Topps Series and this Star Wars comic.  Inside of this bagged issue there is an X-Files ashcan that just happens to be a rare early appearance of The X-Files in comics!

The Image 2010 Yearbook

sdcc2010_yearbook_coverIt’s pricey but if you are a fan of the Nowhere Men then you must find this.  There a lot of debate about the Nowhere men right now.  It’s one of Images hottest books and is demanding serious cash on the back issue market.  Some say Invincible 19 is the comic to own but others believe the first appearance is in this yearbook ( which is also a must have for Walking Dead fans )  I say buy both.

Iron Man 304,305

These comics had pretty significant print runs but if the armor at the end of the most recent Iron Man 3 film trailer is any indication then the Hulkbuster armor could be a big part of the climax.  You can find these comics cheap so why not buy real low and wait a few months?

Note: There is also a Marvel Legends Reprint of issue 305 that is a lot harder to find than the regular issue!

300px-Iron_Man_Vol_1_304Iron_Man_Vol_1_305

Thunderbolts 25 ( Series 1 )

Big Hero 6 is going to be a Disney Animated film and you were smart right?  You heard about the film and hit every LCS you could find for Sunfire & Big Hero 6 1-3 and Alpha Flight vol. 2 issue 17.   After that there weren’t  any appearances for some time.  But I’m guessing most people forgot about this issue from 1999.

25-1

Marvel Comics Presents 26 & Iron Man 230

If you are noticing a trend as it relates to collecting moderns then bravo!  These days the modern market is a bull and the cornerstone of collecting is first appearances especially as it relates to characters  jumping to the big screen.  Honestly would you ever care about Coldblood or Firepower if not for Marvel Films?  Now you must!

I still believe that the second print of this issue will prove to be just as hot a back issue as this one.  Any appearance of the Rescue Armor in the upcoming Iron Man film should boost the value of this comic.  The cool thing about this comic is that the variant can only be determined by knowing what numbers to look for in the bar code!

Injustice Gods 1,1 ( Variant )

It’s not to often that I recommend a comic/video game tie-in issue but this series has generated some heat already.  Based on a new game from the Mortal Kombat creators it looks like a fighter that just can’t fail.  It helps that the art is tight and the Joker starts it all off with one of the most horrific acts in comic history.

The Image Comics Holiday Special

I have mentioned this little gem before but after the most recent episode of the Walking Dead every fan who collects the comics has to have this in their collection.  Morgan first appeared in issue 1 and later in this issue.  Now he has been featured in one of the show’s best episodes, Clear.  Buy this and buy it right now!

Detective Comics 647

Damian Wayne is dead!  Yea it’s sad because he’s the best Robin since the first Robin.  I do sense a resurrection in the futures especially since the little bugger was grown in an artificial womb but until then there will be speculation as to who the next Robin will be.  I want Cassandra Cain to take the role but it’s likely going to be Stephanie Brown.  Fans are clamoring for her DC 52 intro and this could be the way they do it.  This first appearance has been flying under the radar for some time and can be found for pennies.

Science is the new Rock and Roll!

How to make Death in Comics relevant again….

Okay so DC’s New 52 is a bold new direction and a retelling of everything DC. Yes Superman’s first appearance is not in Action Comics #1 from 1938 according to the new universe. The same goes for Batman, Green Lantern, Flash, Wonder Woman, well you get the idea. This unto itself is pure ridiculousness, but from the news this morning we get much of the same from the NEW DC universe as we did from the old. Robin, this time Damian Wayne, will bite the dust in Batman Incorporated #8. How does the Queen song go again? And another one’s gone and another one’s gone, another bites the Batman Incorporated 8dust. Hey hey gonna get you too another one bites the dust.

DC is depending on the media to pick up on the story here about Batman Incorporated #8, which will probably equate to some bank for them. In the real comic book collector’s world this is a non-story. Robin has taken a dirt nap once before; no one cares.

Comic book companies today seem to think that killing will make them money, but when does this get old and when will the sales show it? Many fans are already tired of it, while many non-fans (media) push it as though it’s an important event. Once the media catches on to the ridiculousness of these death stories, they eventually will all become a “who cares? event”. Can one imagine being at that DC board meeting? The same mundane board meeting that a writer gives his idea “Hey let’s kill off Robin in a last heroic battle.” And the answer is “Great idea!” Really???

So what to do? What to do? Is there a fix to the monotony of these killings? Sure there is, but much risk is involved. Who will be the first to take it? Who will step up to the plate and bring comics to a place it’s never really gone? InvestComics has a new take on the possible money grab that would take the death of a character to another level. As simple as it may sound, it would be a major event in the pages of either DC or Marvel and would sell millions.

How about if Robin was killed by Batman? Or better yet vice versa? How about if Wonder Woman killed Flash? Maybe Green Lantern kills Green Arrow? Get the idea here? Have a hero kill one of their own. Have a major player like the ones I just named murder/kill another major player. This would sell books and make national headlines. It would also be the first time a major hero would take out another within the murder/kill vein and we all know how much Marvel and DC likes to be first. There are rumblings about Wolverine dying in the pages of Marvel. Why not have Spider-Man do it?! Or Captain America? Or Thor? Make it count if you’re going to off a major character. The hero that takes out the other would then go on trial for the next 2 years or so, thus dragging out the story line and the company will reap the benefits of money because everyone will want to know the outcome, the fate of the fallen hero. (Insert hero name here) Guilty or not guilty? That could be the tag line. The trial would literally be carried by the news media as more evidence comes out and the outcome could be that the hero would “get away” with murder/kill, but will always have that stigma attached as does Casey Anthony, O.J. Simpson, etc. Some heroes will trust after the trial, some will forever have the approach of turning their back. More storyline! The constant battle within the heroes’ soul will forever endure as he/she tries to prove their worth and sometimes wanting to end their own life. Maybe many years down the road after so much suffering, pain, anguish, sorrow our hero gets vindicated. It’s here that the next money grab comes into play. Media coverage would carry that after 5 years of torment (Insert hero name here) has been vindicated. The second phase of our hero’s life will be redemption, but how will he/she react to the others that have turned their back for so long? More story line!!

Sure heroes have killed before, nothing new with that. The idea here is to have a major player (a hero, not a villain) take out another with their own hands. Then have a twist many years later that would get them off the hook. We do know this is all soap opera stuff for men right?

Would DC or Marvel take this chance and put out one of their own to be a murderer/killed? Has anyone ever thought that O.J. or Oscar Pistorius could be capable of murder or brought up on murder charges? The answer is no more often than not. But when it does happen, it’s a big deal. Let’s see Marvel or DC cab=n ever take this leap and then maybe the comic book world will respect the story lines of offing someone again and not say “oh geez not again?”

So what do you think? If you were the EIC would you give the green light on a hero murdering one of their own? What major player would you put through the ringer? Who would they kill? Share on Facebook, share on any of the below social media, or share here!

Comic Broker Report – More Modern Heat

The Comic Book Broker’s Report ( March )

By Topher Seal

This month is sort of a sequel to last month’s article concerning modern comics and the ridiculous prices being paid for new books.   If you love trading in volatile markets then this current comic market is the place for you.  Many collectors may be weary of investing at this time because of the similarity to an infamous bubble from the past.  Anyone who remembers the bad girl/Valiant/gimmick days can attest to what I speak of.   I always suggest caution when playing in the modern arena but many of these books have significantly lower print runs that the 90’s books and the writing is far superior to most of what was produced in those days.  ( Many Valiant titles are the exception here.  If you have never read Harbinger,  Archer & Armstrong or Solar then now is as good a time to buy sets as any. )

Invincible 19

imagesThis one hasn’t blown up quite yet but it’s already  scarce due to it being part of one of the greatest superhero comics of the last 10 years.  So what’s so special about it now?  Yet to been confirmed, the similarities are hard to ignore as it is likely the first appearance of the Nowhere Men!  This book came out so long ago that it makes it a very interesting collectible.  Many previews or first appearances happen within the first few months of the title’s release.  In this case the situation is so odd you just have to love Image for it.  They continues to keep putting out great comics like the Nowhere Men.  If prices for early issues continue to skyrocket then this puppy is going to be huge.

Also see the Walking Dead 102 for a color preview of the Nowhere Men! ( look for the 2nd print also!)

Helheim  NYCC Sketch Variant

he

If you’re like me and you don’t put a premium of many modern variants then here is a rare exception.  Cullen Bunn’s been on fire with the Sixth Gun and much of his recent Marvel work has been great.  His latest work pits viking against Zombie!  That’s a money maker if I have ever heard of one.

Black Beetle 0,1 & DHP Vol. 2 11

dhGritty Pulp comics have a special place in my collection so when Francesco Francavilla’s Black Beetle appeared in DHP 11 I instantly knew he had a hit on his hands.  Francesco has done a limited amount of work but his earliest appears to be in the 1997 Comic Code Illustrated.  Early issues are already drying up so act now.

Judge Dredd Megazine 322

ff

Diggle and Jock’s new Image mini is off to a good start.  Great art and writing almost always generate some buzz especially when the Image logo is on the cover.  The odd thing about this comic is that is was serialized in the Judge Dredd Megazine 322 some time ago.  They are nearly impossible to get in the states.  Buy and hold.

Peter Panzerfaust 8,9

pp imagepppsHook has made his debut in the beloved Image series set to be a TV show.  Issue 8 is his first appearance and 9 has a black cover making it very difficult to find in high grade.  That incredible close up on Hook’s hook doesn’t hurt its chances on the back issue market either.  It’s not often you see such rapid price increases but issue 9 was selling for 20-30 at online auction the day it came out.

Captain America Reborn 6 & Avengers 5 ( 2010 )

images1:75imagddes1:50

Both of these books have extremely rare variants.  If the Age of Ultron is popular with readers look to these two books for the Ultron War’s earliest references.   These issues that look to the future are always big with collectors.

Note:  The Ultron War was mentioned first via blackboard/timeline that has since been a bit overused.  One of my favorite splash pages that peek into the future is in The Amazing Spider-Man 695.  Check it out!

3 Story: Secret Files of the Giant Man ( Dark Horse )

$(KGrHqJ,!jYFDhpjMmUvBREEolh8sg~~60_57Last month I briefly touched on Matt Kindt’s Mind Mgmt and how it has been optioned by Ridley Scott.  If you haven’t read the series I suggest you buy the trade because there is no chance you will be able to purchase this book for cover anywhere online.  It’s a great read and the fact the Matt has included story elements that are specifically NOT being reprinted will make the individual issue that much more valuable.  I also recommend some of his earlier work such as the Pistolwhip Series and this gem above ( also the first appearance of Mind Mgmt. )

and finally…

With Grant Morrison’s Batman run coming to an end with Batman Inc. Vol 2 #8  there are many rumors surrounding the fate of Damian Wayne.  Damian has become a favorite among those who love Batman.   If Morrison kills of the bratty boy wonder it would be a real shame since it’s very hard to create new characters that generate  long lasting popularity.  One of the most satisfying aspects of the young Robin is the possible future where he has sold his soul to the Devil??? to protect Gotham the best way he can.  No matter what happens some of these issues are not that hard to find but that can change real quick.

The Mignola black & white variant above IS very hard to find.  Good Luck!

Well here we are with part 2 of our Batman Checklist. In this edition we’re going to focus on the comic that first introduced us to the Batman. Detective Comics are up next…..

Batman Checklist (Part 2 of 3)

Detective Comics #27 – Okay so if you live in Riverdale or maybe even Asgard you probably won’t know what this comic signifies. But we are here to educate aren’t we?! This is this first appearance of Commissioner Gordon. No really it is…but this isn’t the reason this comic goes for a whopping 1.2 million dollars. This is the birth; the entrance into the DC universe of the Dark Knight himself, Batman.

Detective Comics #29 – The first appearance of Dr. Death.

Detective Comics #31 – You can venture a guess on JUST how important a comic book character is when the listing’s of the book contain first appearance’s of his gadgets and modes of transportation. This here folks contains the first look at the Batarang and Batplane. No big deal right? How about $70,000 for this comic? Yes thought so.

Detective Comics #33 – if there was a comic that was as important as Batman’s first appearance it’s this comic right here. The origin of Batman coming in at the $85,000 range.

Detective Comics #36 – First appearance of Dr. Hugo Strange and Batman’s finned gloves. Yes those little pointy glove things….first appearance. Yes he’s an important dude.

Detective Comics #38 – Ah yes the Boy Wonder! Robin makes his first appearance right here. Boy oh boy if that Robin character only knew what he was to get into. Death, bad guy, resurrected, new identity, new costume, replaced, quit……..etc. But this isn’t about the second fiddle dude, although this sidekick does command some big bucks here. Say around $85,000.

Detective Comics #58 – First appearance of the Penguin.

Detective Comics #66 – The villain Two-Face makes his debut here.

Detective Comics #108 – ….And in this issue we see the famous Bat signal for the first time. This comic cost a measly $900.

Detective Comics #140 – What website gives you a great way to stock up on your portfolio? InvestComics! See that was a feeble attempt at a riddle. Here’s another bad attempt… Why can $8000 get you your first riddle? Because $8000 will get you the first appearance of the Riddler!

Detective Comics #168 – A two-fer issue! The first appearance of the Red-Hood and Joker’s Origin. A nice $6k buy.

Detective Comics #205 – Ever wonder how the Batcave got to be the Batcave? Well here’s the explanation comic on that thought. The origin of the Batcave!

Detective Comics #370 – And sticking with Neal Adams here. This comic is the first Neal Adams Batman art. The last issue was his debut inside of a Bat book, but he didn’t draw Batman. He did a backup story. The same month though he did the Brave and the Bold #75 cover which also featured a Batman cover, but this comic came out before that one.
