Weapon X #8

A possible introduction of a new villain in Dark Nights Metal #2. Maybe it’s just the Court of Owls? That Andy Kubert cover says this….Either way, still a great story thus far.
Mr. Oz reveals his identity in Action Comics #987 (Dan Jurgens & Viktor Bogdanovic). Part one of ‘The Oz Effect’. Two covers (Nick Bradshaw), the lenticular and non-lenticular are equally on point. Although ‘Mr. Oz’ will give readers the big ‘reveal’ he will turn out to be a character from long ago, but his first appearance as ‘Mr. Oz’ is in Superman #32 (2011).
The new Harley Quinn comic this week has a nice little reason for a collector to pick it up. Harley Quinn 25th Anniversary Special #1 celebrates….well the 25th year of her existence. Duh, but that’s not the reason this books cracks into the Hot Picks this week. DC Comics informs the fans that there will be creators all over this comic that have never worked on the Harley Quinn character before. Lots of first Harley work to check out, but from whom? Find out on Wednesday.
A villain named Bloodwork makes his (its) first appearance in Flash #30. Creative team; Joshua Williamson & Neil Googe.
Midtown Comics is limiting customers to only one copy per; Supergirl #13 – Stanley Artgerm Lau variant. Why the mention? Well, it’s a regular priced variant cover, so what’s up with that? And it’s going for almost double its cover price already in the aftermarket. Great cover though!

Marvel’s Generation comics continue, with two captains; Generations Captain Marvel & Captain Mar-Vell #1. Creators: Margaret Stohl & Brent Schoonover.
The Runaways television show will be arriving soon and Marvel Comics will be there to cash in with a new Runaways series. Runaways #1 will be the series’ fifth volume. InvestComics released a Runaways comics checklist back in September of 2016. You can check this out by clicking right HERE. Make sure to check out all of our checklists right HERE.
The new Weapon H character is still wet behind the ears and he’s already receiving a Venomized cover; Weapon X #8 by Greg Land. Oh yes, it’s sold out already.
Click on the RED links, Images or the comic cover to buy/bid from All available sellers on Ebay.
Venomverse #2 features Venom vs Poison Spider-Man. This is full of awesome as is this Venomverse series/event.
The late Michael Turner pops up every so often with a ‘remastered variant’. This time it’s Secret Empire Omega #1. InvestComics released a Michael Turner Creator Spotlight back in August 2016. You can click right HERE to check that out. What a super talent, gone way too soon.

Image Comics’ Realm #1  feels like a Mad Max/Walking Dead/Game of Thrones mash-up book. Look for sell-outs almost immediately upon release. Creators: Seth Peck, Jeremy Haun & Nick Filardi. The Tony Moore (cover B) is stellar. A definite ‘InvestComics Best Comic Covers Of The Week’ book.

The Retcon #1 Image Comics solicit is one of the most confusing but funny things we’ve seen in a while. It’s a reboot of a comic that never existed as it embarks on an all-new issue number one! Huh? Okay, you’ll make us buy it. Creators: Matt Nixon & Toby Cypress.
Sheena #1 from Dynamite Entertainment. Creators: Marguerite Bennett, Christina Trujillo & Moritat.
Shinobi Ninja Princess Lightning Oni #1 (Action Lab Entertainment). Creator Martheus Wade.

We here at InvestComics had a chance recently to speak with Carol Zara. Carol and Eric Barnett released their comic last week and it’s called Alien Toilet Monsters #1. The reviews are in and nothing but good things are being said here. This comic is not a typical toilet humor type comic, it’s an actual story that involves aliens, guns and a bad as* girl at the helm. This awesomely fun comic is only available at certain comic conventions the ATM crew will be attending. It’s also available if you ask your comic store to order directly from them. The Alien Toilet Monsters site can be seen by clicking right HERE. ATM have their social media pages in tow as well. Brian K. Vaughan’s latest book will be hitting today; We Stand on Guard #1 (Image Comics). InvestComics thought what a fantastic time to get a creator list together from this amazingly talented writer!

Cable #43 (1997) Early professional comic work (Marvel). Brian teams with Todd Dezago on writing duties.

Ka-Zar 97 Annual (1997) First solo writing credits.

Wolverine #131 (1998) In Brian’s young comic career, the comic industry was turned upside on its head. A racial slur typo was immediately recalled as this became one of the most prolific error comics in history for all the wrong reasons. Vaughan/Dezago writing credits.

Vertigo Winter’s Edge #3 (2000) Here is Vaughan’s first DC (Vertigo) work. A Swamp Thing story.

The Titans #14 (2000) The first time Brian handles the superhero genre for DC Comics. Writing credits with Devin Kallie Grayson.

Swamp Thing #1 (2000) As series writer, Vaughan actually made the Swamp Thing an interesting deep character. If and when Swamp Thing finally comes to Netflix/network television or film, the producers will probably look right here for reference. The series lasted only 20 issues. A very interesting title for the last issue in this series (Swamp Thing #20); Saga. The title is right on the cover too. So technically, this is the first time the name Vaughan and Saga appear together on a cover. In the grand scheme of things. means absolutely nothing, but pretty cool nonetheless.

Wonder Woman #160 (2000) Brian writes two issues of Wonder Woman. This one and the following issue. Both have Adam Hughes covers.

Superman Annual #12 (2000) When writing the main story in this Superman annual, readers are introduced to Iman, El Muerto, and Acrata. And the Iman character resembles the new bunny robot Batman.

Y: The Last Man #1 (2002) Critically acclaimed. Here is the series that put Brian K Vaughan on mind of just about every comic fan on the planet. Y: The Last Man was one of the most prolific comic book runs in recent times. An absolute gem of a series. Click HERE to get an Ebay listing of all the issues available. J.G. We’re back from Special Edition New York Con 2015. What a fantastic show. Be sure to check out all of the InvestComics’ social media to see lots of images from the event.

There is no shortage of comics to choose from this week. There are plenty to read and speculate on this week. Let’s dive right in shall we?

The creative team of Brenden Fletcher and Annie Wu will be on Black Canary #1. Writer Brenden Fletcher has turned things around for the Batgirl title and looks to make some noise with this title. A great read coming here.

Look for a quick sell out as Amanda Conner leads the way with Harley Quinn and Power Girl #1. Always a great book with all the girls; Amanda, Harley, and Power Girl.

Justice League of America #1 features superstar creator Bryan Hitch as writer/artist. A fantastic way to kick things off. Having over 9 variant covers is not. The over saturated variant cover market is taking a huge hit these days. There are too many variant copies with no takers. Too many times dealers are either left with them or the “want to be speculator” is left with them. There is an art to collecting the variant market. Not every single variant will produce an aftermarket buzz. Be vigilant in knowing the difference in a variant comic and a hot aftermarket variant cover. About 4 or so months ago, an $800 Spider-Gwen variant existed. That same 9.8 sold for $575 yesterday. All the other 9.8’s within the $550-$700 range last sold in either March or April. The same with all the Star Wars variants. Those were a hot ticket when it hit. The thing InvestComics pointed out with that comic was this; if the guts (inside) of the comic brings nothing relative to the market, be it an introduction, a new villain, a new plot twist, or anything pertaining to the possibility that it will appear in the new film, then you are dead. Too many copies having the exact same guts brings nothing to the speculative table except for those nice covers. Covers don’t sell books. At first they may, eventually there will have to be substance. Although a fantastic story is told in Star Wars #1, all 100+ variants are the same story. This is only one of the few factors in buying variant comics. And as for the Spider-Gwen, the market is correcting itself. While the inside offers the first appearance, the market is a bit out of its league right now. Don’t get caught up in the hyperbole. So let’s circle all the way back around, if Justice League of America #1 has something to offer on the inside of all of those pretty covers, then you’re on to something. If it’s just great storytelling from Bryan Hitch with no significant introduction or otherwise, you have yourself a nice variant for $50 that will be worth $10 in six months time. Be aware of what you are buying.

A new 12 issue series from DC; Prez #1 will be on the shelf this Wednesday. Last we checked, Prez #1 (1973) was a he not a she. Every new comic these days seems to be an introduction of a new female character or what was once a HE is now a SHE to some degree. Thor, Spider-Man, Deadpool, Iron Man, Nova, etc….

Writer Paul Levitz brings Doctor Fate #1 to life. Always a great read with Paul at the helm.

Finishing out the DC number one issues; Doomed #1 and Martian Manhunter #1

A speculative book to watch for this Wednesday will be Wonder Woman #41. A new villain is introduced. Must check this one out. The Brian Bolland variant (cover B) is quite awesome. Here is a perfect example of what was spoken about earlier regarding variants. The guts of this comic has something to offer. Although the variant is a cover B cover price, if it was a $15 variant, it may be worth the pick up. Something more to offer than a pretty cover. The print run is a huge factor in the variant market as well. Like I said, there are a few mitigating factors that go into purchasing a variant comic.

Marvel’s Deadpool Secret Secret Wars #2 will be part of the Spider-Gwen craze. How about Gwenpool? Spider-Gwen as Deadpool sounds like a match made in aftermarket heaven doesn’t it? Let’s see if Gwenpool ever gains traction, if she does, she first appears right on the cover as part of the Gwen cover variants all over Marvel’s books right now. Only one of these available on Ebay right now.

Squadron Sinister #1 looks like a great book. Probably looking at a second print here soon. Check out the first appearance “cameo” of Squadron Sinister in Avengers #69 (1969) (Last page). First full appearance in Avengers #70 (1969).

Marvel’s Runaways comic back in 2003 was a hot ticket at one time. Runaways will get their restart button pushed with Runaways #1 this Wednesday. First appearing in Runaways #1 (2003) with writer Brian K Vaughan. Many first appearances throughout all of the Runaway titles. The variant this Wednesday is sold out.

A real cool book with lots of different Thor characters. What’s not to love? Thors #1 will be a great read and as always with these new titles and relaunches, look out for the sneaky hot intro.

The Spider-Gwen craze continues with the Gwenverine variant (Cover B) on Old Man Logan #2. No really, we’re not making this up.

Well if you’re a comic book enthusiast you know by now that Marvel has a book coming out this week that promises to meet expectations of a fantastic brawl. Avengers vs. X-Men #1, or better yet the way Marvel is billing it “A vs. X” will finally come out after a huge build up. The fight is said to reverberate throughout much of the Marvel Universe.  In the end, will this clash between these two colossal teams mean anything within the confines of the MU? Probably a resounding no as an answer here, but we do get to see a great scrap! Anything they may happen in this storyline anyway will probably be “Bobby-Ewing-ed” anyway. Who’s Bobby Ewing? What’s Bobby Ewing-ed? Dallas television show? Google it…..

As any comic collector would probably know, this is not the first time these teams have gotten into a lovers’ quarrel. But there was that 1987 limited series that was a lot of fun. X-men vs. The Avengers (X vs. A). Brought to you by writer’s Roger Stern and Tom Defalco, with Marc Silvestri and Keith Pollard on pencils. Those were the days when readers didn’t expect as much as they do these days. Yes it was the speculation days in comic collecting, but it was still fun to read the story where the hyperbole didn’t set the bar so high to be let down if a story wasn’t that good. In today’s market, with the savvier collector, we expect more from our writers and are quicker to criticize with so much availability as far as social media goes to get your voice heard. Well that’s today’s episode of the soapbox! All kidding aside, pick up the 4 issue limited series from 1987 and get some enjoyment out of reading it. Better yet, pick up the 4 issues, buy the new Avengers vs. X-Men #1 and do a side by side comparison of the 2 first issues! Look how far the industry has come. Or maybe not! If you do the comparison and want to write up a review for InvestComics, send it our way (contact@trendingpopculture.com), we’ll post it! If you do the comparison and use it for your own purposes after stealing the idea from here, be sure to at least credit us. Thanks.

Hulk #50 is a milestone “Bonus” sized issue. Whatever happened to “Double sized” issues? Here we get 48 pages of Red Hulk goodness. So what is the mysterious dark figure following Hulk around? Will we find out in the Bonus sized issue? Probably not….maybe….does anyone care really? One thing to surely care about is the awesome Walt Simonson Variant cover. That guy rocks. Be sure to click on the cover image to enlarge it. (It’s also featured in the covers of the week below).

Avengers Academy #28 gives fans another go at the Runaways team. With all the hype over Brian K. Vaughn’s recent Saga #1, the Runaways #1 from 2003 was a very well received written book from BKV. That said it’s also their first appearance.

Marvel has a busy week on the Hot Picks this week, right? It doesn’t stop with the release of the much anticipated Secret Service #1 from superstar Mark Millar and legend status Dave Gibbons. These two creators better deliver the goods with this series. Very high expectations here…..remember the social media critic’s we spoke about earlier? Yes, apply that here.

Voltron Year One #1 from Dynamite Entertainment makes its way into your shop this week. Check out the very firstVoltron comic ever in Voltron #1 (1985) from Modern Comics. Ape Entertainment releases Ramiel Wrath of God #1 from writer Javier Grillo-Marxuach of the Lost television series.

That’s it for this week. Stan Lee interview still forthcoming, promise! News forthcoming about the InvestComics’ Comic Hot Picks Chicks as well!

Scroll through the covers of the week below.

See you next week. Invest wisely.

InvestComics Comic Hot Picks 8-27-08

Looks like JSA has a NEW villain to deal with, and his name is not Loki!

Amazing-Spider-Man # 569  First there was Venom, then Carnage and now Spidey will have a new thorn in his side and it’s name is Anti-Venom. Yes we know, not much of a name, but hey we’ve all heard worse. Marvel is not revealing whether or not Anti-V is a villain or a hero. Either way, this comic looks to be one of those must haves.

Skaar # 3  What more can be said about Skaar?! This comic is mucho caliente (very hot, for the non speaking Spanish community). Okay as if the hype machine isn’t big enough with this comic. Marvel says it has a shocking second story by the great Butch Guice himself. Buy this comic, buy this series, and buy it now!

Runaways # 1  This is the 3rd launch of this series, but this time we have Humberto Ramos taking the penciling duties and man does it look sweet. Bring the artistry of Ramos, a number one issue and Hollywoodtalking about this as a motion picture¦..nuff said.

Kickass # 4  Nicolas Cage just jumped on board the Hollywood/Comic Book gravy train once again. Set to start shooting in the fall in Canada, Kickass is going to do just that at the box office, kick ass. Issue #4 introduces us to Hit Girl. A nine year old that will turn this comic upside down. With the introduction here, Cage joining the fray and Matthew Vaughn directing, the Kickass series is good pick up. Did we mention that Vaughn has been tapped to direct some character named Thor!? Cool huh?!

Justice Society of America# 18 Geoff Johns has JSA on top of the reading charts for a reason. The guy knows how to write a good story. If judging a book only by its cover, JSA is in a world of trouble with the introduction of Magog. Not too keen on the name, but we’re not telling Magog that! Looking like a descendant from Asgard, this villain named Magog hopefully will stand on his own.

Other Comics To Watch For……..

Family Dynamic # 1  DC treats us to an all new team for kids.

Halloween 30th Anniversary  Michael Myers as the boogieman for 30 years now?! WOW!

Wizard Magazine # 204  This month Wizard Magazine pays homage to a fallen hero in the comic industry. Michael Turner will be missed. Buy this Wizard and share in the memories of a man that inspired many. Godspeed Michael.

See you next week.

Invest wisely.
