Norman #3 – Each of the previous two comics sold out before this one. This one has sold out too! Titan Comics has a hit on their hands.

All-Star Batman #1 – We’re going to love reading this new Batman book. And we’re loving that Jock variant too!

Superwoman #1 – The very talented Phil Jimenez will write and draw this new Superwoman series. It’s going to be fantastic.

Deathstroke Rebirth #1 – Writer Christopher Priest starts things off with the Deathstroke Rebirth comic. This series will be a definite get each month. You must get this on your pull list.

Spider-Man Deadpool #8 – Marvel’s solicit says the same thing we’ve been saying since issue number one of this series. Buy it. Every issue sells out and we’ve told speculators this series is a no-brainer. Two of Disney’s biggest characters in their library. Put them together in a monthly team-up book and watch it fly off the shelf. And we predicted a while ago, you heard this HERE first….wait until they do a Spider-Man, Deapool, Spider-Gwen, Gwenpool team-up. Those variants will go for a heavy aftermarket premium.

Justice League #40

Click to Buy Now

Each week InvestComics seeks out a comic(s) on Ebay for $100 or less and then brings it to the attention of our fans. We call it IC 100 Club Pick. The idea is to get a great book at a great price. We do not own nor are we selling these comics. The comics are found by a random process. We do not know the ebay seller(s), nor are we promoting the Ebay seller. Any knowing from the Ebay seller of InvestComics or its affiliates is purely coincidental. (See disclaimer for more details).

IC 100 Club Pick: Justice League #40 (2015) 9.8. This modern comic is more about the new Justice League trailer and what the potential it could carry. The new trailer has Bruce Wayne building a team to defeat an evil like no one has ever seen. That evil, we hope, could be Darkseid. If Darkseid is the main villain (we hope), this comic possesses the first appearance of his daughter Grail (cameo). If the female presence continues to make their indelible mark within the comic book industry like they have never before, expect to possibly see Grail on the big screen. This comic will leave that $99.99 price tag long, long, long behind if Grail makes that leap to the big screen. A speculative move here indeed. You make the call.

We start off this week towards the speculative side of the hobby……
All-Star Batman #1 from DC Comics is one of those tough call speculator books. Not all all a question this comic will be a tremendous read (we hope anyway!). The book itself will bring sure-fire creative super power. Scott Snyder writes and John Romita Jr. will pencil. There will be other dynamic creators attached to this comic, but those two will get top billing. Scott Synder will be re-imagining Batman villains as we have never seen them before. That according to DC of course, don’t hold us to that. First up will be Two-Face. With all of the changes going on from DC from the past 10 years or so, will this be any different really? It’s a good possibility it will be “different”, but therein lay one of the issues as far as speculation goes. Just because something is different and touches off some fanboy nerve in a good way, it may drive the speculation market to max status. Here’s a question you must ask yourself, what happens once the romance wears off?
In recent memory one of the only books to sustain a monetary value and marketability with absolutely no redeeming comic book collector substance (first appearance, death, new character look, gender change character, etc) is Scott Synder/Greg Capullo Batman #1. We have stated this before in numerous articles, if you look at a graded copy, upper right hand corner, it’s completely blank. No first appearance, no appearances, no new costumes, nothing. That book still commands some decent aftermarket prices and it holds a fantastic beginning of a storybook run by two unbelievably talented creators, we get it (we think). Think about this. There have been some amazing Batman stories told over many, many decades by legends in the industry. Amazing runs of their own. Some of their books couldn’t even touch the Synder/Capullo Batman books as far as aftermarket pricing goes. Is that Batman #1 (Synder/Capullo) graded 9.8, which just sold for $300 a few days ago REALLY worth $300?? That’s $300, essential for a…..”Batman story”. Before you fanboys start whining and crying, we’re fans of Synder and Capullo, so stop getting your panties in a bunch. You’re going to learn here, don’t worry about when the next Scooby Doo/Harley Quinn team-up will happen. There are plenty of story driven comics throughout history that command some aftermarket monies. Miller’s Dark Knight and Gaiman’s Sandman, come to mind right away, but those stories were industry changing stories. We’re not saying Scott and Greg didn’t bring their Batman run to another level, but did they really change things in the long term? We’ll actually have to wait and see about this. Five years does not qualify a $300 book (in OUR opinion. Fanboys please sit down. Adults, please speak if you want). Neal Adams, Frank Miller, Alan Moore and a few others have literally changed the Batman landscape that still reverberates in today’s modern era. This market is modern top heavy, been that way for quite some time now. Be weary of what you are putting in to get out. Many have put too much into these modern books and are getting torched with red numbers. The Batman #1 book (and some others) have paid off, but more often than not, that “big/obvious” book winds up not meeting expectations for speculators. Wytches (Snyder + Jock = WOW) comes to mind rather quickly. So many more though.
Which brings us back to All-Star Batman #1 this Wednesday. The creative firepower is there and the amazing variants are there. The big questions; will the story be interesting enough to compel demand? Will interest wane after the first read? The second issue? Will this be all hype and no punch? Will delays in release happen? Will there be a large print run? How many times have we seen an all-star creative team assembled and it turns out to be just “okay” or “good” or even a flop. It’s when collectors aren’t counting on it, case in point Batman #1 (Synder/Capullo) that it becomes a huge hit. Yes we know, we know, sit down fanboys, they were fabulous creators when they were announced for that Batman book, but no one would have predicted a 9.8 for $300 in late July 2016. No one.
So going full circle here and back to the beginning, we are definitely without a doubt looking forward to the new All-Star Batman comic. More so as a comic book fan and not as a speculator. We could be completely wrong on this, we’ve been wrong before, we accept that. But we think this may be one of those creative all-star teams with a good story to tell and that’s it. Which, at the end of the day is the goal anyway. As for the REAL speculative side regarding All-Star Batman #1 this Wednesday, one word…….Jock.

With the influx of female comic characters dominating the industry these days, DC will go back to the well this week. Superwoman #1 will be written and drawn by the great Phil Jimenez. We’re so on board here. We expect the new series to do well and we urge collectors to check it out. Because we really like the potential of the new Superwoman book, you may want to click on the following comic to see what is available; DC Comics Presents Annual #2 (1983). This is the first appearance of Superwoman. Cover from legend Gil Kane and pencils by Keith Pollard.

The New Super-Man #1 fared well and now the follow up; New Super-Man #2. Be sure to check out the constant introduction of new characters during this series.
InvestComics had Deathstroke’s first appearance in the very first issue of the InvestComics magazine more than 11 years ago. Back when it was more obtainable. A 9.8 first appearance sold for a mere $550 a couple of weeks ago. Now this Wednesday, Deathstroke Rebirth #1 hits and we’re stoked. It won’t be a $550 book, probably ever, but the story will kick all kinds of as*. Writer Christopher Priest will deliver, get this on your pull list. The Stephen Platt variant cover is fantastic and it makes us reflect back to the early nineties when Stephen first tackled his first Marvel book; Moon Knight #55 (1993). That was a huge hot book back then. A 9.8 Moon Knight #55 just sold for $189 in early July. Definitely worth mentioning here too, the regular Aco Deathstroke Rebirth #1 cover is phenomenal as well, but InvestComics has always spoken about Stephen Platt thru-out the years. We’re huge fans.
Speaking of covers, a tremendous Rafael Albuquerque variant cover; Detective Comics #938. Rafael is making a habit of cutting right into the InvestComics Hot Picks almost every week with an amazing variant cover. Keep that up sir, we certainly do not mind.

A bevy of creators will have a hand in All New All Different Avengers Annual #1. See if your favorite creator(s) are in there. Nice Alex Ross linking covers too.
Accused #1 will feature a Daredevil Fiona Staples variant cover.
When InvestComics informed readers that the Spider-Man Deadpool #1 comic and series was going to be one to get and follow, we were kinda right. Well not kinda, we were. Spider-Man Deadpool #8 comes out with Marvel touting the same thing we have been saying, that every issue sells out and you need to be on top of this series. Spider-Man Deadpool #1 is headed to its seventh printing. The two biggest characters within Disney’s arsenal each month in their own team-up book, it’s a no-brainer here.

Here are some Indie comics and number one issues to definitely check out on Wednesday.
A new book from writer Jonathan Hicks (East of West) will be on the shelf. Check out Black Monday Murders #1 from Image Comics.
Want a dark and twisted retelling of the Peter Pan story? Sure you do! Check out 451 Media Group’s Nvrlnd #1.

We gave our readers an alert on Henchgirl (Scout Comics), which turned out to be a very nice aftermarket series. Now we have been telling readers about the Norman title from Titan Comics every month. Each of the previous two issues have sold out and Norman #3 has sold out before Wednesday’s new comic book day. The series has proven to be an interest to fans and you best be on it.
Sons Of Anarchy Redwood Original #1 (Boom Studios) has show creator Kurt Sutter on board to supervise the making of this comic series. He wants to protect his property and provide the best SOA book for his fans. We get it and that’s awesome.
Starring Sonya Devereaux #1 (American Mythology) features a Walking Dead #1 variant cover.
Blue Hour #1 (Action Lab Entertainment). Suicide Squad Most Wanted El Diablo & Boomerang #1 (DC Comics).

InvestComics Hot Picks – New Release Comics on 9/3/14

There are foregone conclusions in life. The one that we all try hardest to elude is death. No matter how hard we try, we all will eventually meet our ultimate demise. No way around this one folks. It’s going to happen. However, the death card- foregone conclusion does not hold water within the comic book world. Wolverine will start the ultimate conclusion to his life beginning this week in Death of Wolverine (2014) #1. The death will stir the pot a bit, but will simply not hold for the long hall. Wolverine equals money and Disney isn’t about to give that up. So what to do as a fan? Well for one; enjoy the story put forth before you. It’s probably going to be a great one! As a speculator, well there are literally about 13 variants (at last count) that stand before you. If you’re a savvy investor and stay on top of the InvestComics Hot Picks each week, you’ll know what to do exactly. If you’re a first timer here, all I can say is choose wisely. There are simply too many variants to cover, but I can tell you one thing. It will be short lived, so you better turn over the comics quick. There is one sold out variant and that one goes to the sketch Deadpool variant. That variant alone will cost you around $350. That’s a bit much. Money better spent on a nice Bronze Age first appearance someplace. It’s your money though. If you buy that $350 book, you better have a good plan to get rid of it.

DC Comics wants to out duel Marvel this week so they go back to the well with their 3D covers. There is absolutely no redeeming value to these amazingly awesome 3D comics as far as monetary value goes. It’s a passing fad and will be as big as the Bombshell covers were, or the selfie covers. Yes you get the idea. Take a pass on these if you’re thinking of a spec market spike. There will however probably be ONE or TWO that will break through to cause an aftermarket bump. A short lived gimmick will bring a few extra bucks to your pocket, so the same applies here as did the Death of Wolverine. Choose wisely. Here is a quick checklist with images of which 3D covers are headed your way.

Check out the zany/fun and Sold Out variant comic God Hates Astronauts (2014 Image) #1 this Wednesday. No more left at Diamond so you better get a copy if you think it’s a keeper. Another sold out comic hitting the shelf this week is Silent Hill Downpour Annes Story (2014) #1. Don’t look for too much on the spec side with this comic though.

Since the inception of InvestComics back in 2005 I have recommended Moon Knight countless times, everything from Werewolf by Night, Marvel Spotlight, to the Stephen Platt run and many more. All of those comics have showed some decent progress over time. I will continue to inform anyone that reads this column each week that you need to get your Moon Knight Comics in order. He will eventually come to fruition and hit the big screen. When it is announced one day, these books will explode beyond a price range that makes sense to buy for the savvy speculator. So with that, in this week’s Moon Knight (2014 5th Series) #7 fans are introduced to a new villain.

Disney based comic Figment has been selling very well. Figment (2014) #4 will reveal the origin of Dreamfinder and Figment.

Alice Cooper (2014 Dynamite) #1 will start a new ongoing series written by the amazing Joe Harris. Alice Cooper is no stranger to comics. Check out his first appearance in the Marvel title Marvel Premiere #50 (1979). Mr. Cooper had an actual hand in writing that book too. Awesome Terry Austin cover as well!

Dark Horse Comics puts together two unlikely characters; Grendel and the Shadow in Grendel vs Shadow (2014) #1. Although the Shadow is a cool teammate, Grendel is total badas*. Grendel’s first appearance was in Primer #2 (1983). A once very hot commodity way back in the day still shows signs of life on Ebay. A recent 9.6 CGC graded sold for $250. Primer #2 consistently sells on Ebay, which is a great sign. Why Grendel isn’t on the big screen yet is puzzling. If you can get your hands on one of these, do yourself a favor and do so. It’s a winner and an investment all the way.

Number One (2014 Aazurn) #1 will be a great read. Look for this one shot to sell out. A disturbing new Vertigo title will be of interest to check out; Names (2014 DC/Vertigo) #1. Ex Con (2014 Dynamite) #1, Cloaks (2014 Boom) #1, and Death Defying Dr Mirage (2014 Valiant) #1 will be worth a look as well.

Want off the wall, funny, wacky this week? Look no further than Hawkeye vs Deadpool (2014) #0. This will be a must read.

Be sure to visit the InvestComics Instagram page. A lot of cool comics up for sale!

See you next week. Actually not! InvestComics will be at the Baltimore Comic Con!! Look for A LOT of POST from the show on the InvestComics Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, Twitter, Google Plus and Tumblr pages!! We’ll bring Baltimore Comic Con to you!

See you next week from Baltimore! Invest wisely.

InvestComics Hot Picks – New Release Comics on 3/5/14

[scrollGallery id=337]

Marvel Comics will go back to the well this week with another Moon Knight Series attempt; Moon Knight (2014 5th Series) #1. Will it work this time? Will the new series exceed the proverbial magic number of 60? You see, Marc Spector has never seen an issue after number 60. 38 was his second high score. Now granted, some of his 16 or so series have been limited series, reprints, team-ups or utter failures in the ongoing series department. There are some characters within comic companies that see early success and or have a cult like following, so the companies cater to those in need of the hero/villain once in a while with the high hopes that more fans will latch on. It happens all the time. Failure usually happens too all the time. Moon Knight is the classic case in point here. But with all of the television and movie executives breathing down every cornerstone of every cinderblock within the comic book entertainment industry, Moon Knight is bound to get picked up. If you’re an old school follower of InvestComics, you will know that I have been saying this for years. Moon Knight is Marvel’s answer to DC’s Batman. The Dark Knight vs. The White Knight. What better way can Marvel stick it to DC than to have a successful run on the White Knight on some entertainment medium outlet level? Be it a TV show or a movie. Of course Marvel has absolutely nothing to prove these days to anyone, but Moon Knight would make a nice addition to an already successful run.

Let’s just assume for a moment that Marvel is going to green light Moon Knight as a major motion picture. What approach do they take? Well there isn’t much choice in the style/ambiance/feel you can go with except one; dark. It would mark one of the first major Marvel Studios films (new era) to be a darker/grittier feature. So where to reference from you may ask? There are two places and these are guarantees in the spec market IF Moon Knight ever gets green lit. Grab your pen and paper folks, these are LOCKS. The first spot they will look is 1993. In 1993 Moon Knight received his “Miller/McFarlane/Lee/Johns” on his book. The character finally got an identity like the previous aforementioned creators did for their characters. A mere mention of McFarlane and your mind is on Spider-Man. Miller and you go to Batman/Daredevil. You get the idea here. His name was Stephen Platt. Platt essentially became THE Moon Knight guy on Moon Knight #55 (1993). Anyone that was to ever follow will have to follow his lines. But it took about 13 years for the next creator to step up to the plate and except Platt’s challenge. In 2006 David Finch accepted the challenge and redefined the character once more in Moon Knight #1 (2006). Without a shadow of a doubt, IF Moon Knight ever sees the light of day, these two comic books will in fact (not fact really, but boy am I confident here) be the reference points to lead the way. Buy these comics now for minimal monies; you have nothing to lose really. It’s such an affordable book that it won’t even hit your wallet hard at all. Buy the David Finch variant, get it signed and graded too while you’re at it.

And one more Moon Knight comic to buy, a must actually; Werewolf by Night #32 (1975). That of course is the first appearance of Moon Knight. By all accounts, a pricey book for a character that hasn’t seen that much success at all. Odd isn’t it? I leave you with a quick nugget about Moony, then we must move on. Did you know that one of the first ever comics to go Direct was Moon Knight #15 (1982)? Check out that Frank Miller/Joe Jusko cover. Interior art by Bill Sienkiewicz. What a beauty of a book.

So stock up on Moon Knight because this might be the time that Hollywood finally comes a’ knockin’ so be prepared. And let’s also hope that this series doesn’t face the ominous fate that Scottie Young’s Moon Knight Variant has suffered.

Speaking of suffering an ill demised ending, rumors are swirling all over the place regarding Forever Evil (2013 DC) #6. Will Nightwing bite the dust? Does this really matter? We all know he’s going to be in the new Batman vs. Superman film, so he will come back JUST in time for the movie release. His death will spark an uptick in the market, but as quickly as it does, it will fall. Get this comic and sell it. Get it out of your hands asap.

She-Hulk (2014 3rd Series) #2 will guest star Hellcat. Check out her first appearance as Hellcat in Avengers #144 (1976) done up by some guy named George Perez. (Sarcasm here of course).

IDW will release Rogue Trooper (2014) #1 this week as a new ongoing series. Rouge Trooper first appeared in 2000AD #228 (1981). Some guy named Dave Gibbons was the co-creator. (Sarcasm once again).

Archie Comics makes their way onto the InvestComics Hot Picks list this week. Mega Man (2011 Archie) #34 will introduce Mega Man X.

Definite number one issues to keep on your radar this Wednesday. The very first Millarworld Universe comic, Starlight (2014 Image) #1. Tales of Honor (2014 Image) #1 will have a sold out sign on it, as will Veil (2014 Dark Horse) #1.

And the rest….Auteur (2014 Oni Press) #1Batman Superman (2013 DC) Annual #1, Darkness Vicious Traditions (2014 Image) #1, and Evil Empire (2014 Boom) #1.

In the “enough already” department, Magneto (2014) #1 and Wolverine and the X-Men (2014) #1. Probably going to be excellent fun reads, but no power behind them to ever sustain in the aftermarket.

Invest wisely, Carpe Diem.

Stephen Platt Covers “Sabretooth Reborn” in WOLVERINE #310!

archie601.gifArchie # 601
Well here it is fans, 68 years in the making and it’s finally going to happen. After switching back and forth between 2 girls, after the countless bickering, after the fist fights, after the 600th issue of Archie comics, Archie is getting married. This is a very big deal in the Archie fan community as well as pop culture. The issue is offering up a surprise ending that promises to leave us speechless. My guess here is he marries Betty and not Veronica (Veronica marries Reggie). Everyone who is an Archie fan agrees, ‘why is Archie marrying Veronica and not Betty?’ Betty is the more wholesome girl, while Veronica has always been a total….jerk. This Wednesday really marks an event if Archie does indeed marry. Its Archie comics all grown up!

vengofmk1finchvariant.gifVengeance of Moon Knight # 1  Here we have one of those characters from Marvel that they just can’t seem to figure out. At last count, Moon Knight has had 9 different restarts, mini’s or specials under his belt. When will Marvel get it right? Will it be now? Here are some things to consider about this go around. Artist Jerome Opena (Wolverine:Flies to a Spider, Punisher) gets the nod to draw pictures, while writer Gregg Hurwitz (Foolkiller, Punisher MAX, Wolverine: Switchback) gets the writing duties. Both are rather newbie’s in the industry, which is a very good thing, Moon Knight needs fresh blood on his title. One of the best things about this new series is going to be the eye candy covers from Mr. Moon Knight artist himself David Finch (check out some more of David’s awesome Moon Knight stuff over at www.comicnews.info right now in the Covering Variants article). This is the deal, David Finch owns the White Knight. He is the only artist to ever bring this character to an edge (besides Stephen Platt, he was the first) of darkness and total bad as* like no one else could. As I say in the comicnews info article, when, when Marvel desides to make the Moon Knight movie, they will first look at Stephen Platt’s MK, then they will go to the ‘finished product’ in David Finch’s MK. Finch simply brings it when it comes to MK. It will not be long before Finch is back to doing the interior of these books because he does the only Moon Knight on the planet that is worth even a look and Hollywood will think so too.

Brave And The Bold # 27

Fan favorite J. Michael Straczynski comes on board one of the newest Batman titles. He brought Spider-Man to another level, no reason to think he won’t do the same here. That Spider-Man #30 comic still commands a few dollars and that J. Scott Campbell/Tim Townsend cover still rocks!

This issue has an appearance by the ‘All new, All different’ Omega Men. Want the original Omega Men? The first appearance would only cost you about $12 in Green Lantern Vol 2 #141. You should buy this because DC is gearing up for the Omega Men regular ongoing.
