The debut of a new Star Wars character comes in the form of a comic book. Most of us saw DJ in the Last Jedi movie in December, played by Benecio Del Toro. On a personal note, I walked out of the theater after the movie and spoke about how great that DJ character was. Now Star Wars The Last Jedi – DJ Most Wanted #1 arrives this Wednesday. Possible bigger things for DJ in the future, he’s a fantastic player within the Star Wars lure. This will be his first comic book appearance. Writers Ben Acker and Ben Blacker. Artist Kev Walker.
As DC announces that Doomsday Clock will now go bi-monthly, Marvel’s Avengers still goes weekly for its third straight week of a 16 straight week turn. This week in Avengers #678, an Avenger dies? Let’s read and find out.

DC’s “New Age Heroes” continues this week. Damage #1, from a couple of weeks ago, was the first of many new heroes being introduced within their DC universe. These characters will not be from a separate universe, they’ll be put right in the middle of the existing time line. This is fantastic news because it gives the DCU a shot in the arm with new blood. This said, it’s quite possible some or none of these characters will catch on, but why not pick up the debut issues and check them out? Who knows, maybe one of these characters has a huge breakout on the popularity side, thus jacking up the speculative side. Safe bet is to buy all of the “New Age Heroes” as they release to cover your speculative bloodline. If nothing pops, so what? You were entertained with the words and pictures for 10 minutes of your life. Silencer #1 will be the offering this week from writer Dan Abnett and artists John Romita Jr./Sandra Hope. Anyone can check out a preview right HERE before you buy. Looks intense and we’re all in. Going back to Damage #1 a quick sec. If you haven’t seen already, 10 year Jason Katz started his own comic book review show. He reviews Damage #1, video in this post. Check it out. He’s awesome (proud papa speaking).

Check out the origin of Clayface in Detective Comics Annual #1. Creators; James Tynion IV, Eddy Barrows and Eber Ferreira.
New DC sci-fi comic, Motherlands #1 (Vertigo) from Simon Spurrier and Rachael Stott.
Deathstroke chooses a new path. Maybe this “hero” thing isn’t working out so well for him. Let’s see where life takes him in Deathstroke Annual #1. Writer Christopher Priest, artists Bill Sienkiewicz and Denys Cowan.
A new Swamp Thing story paying tribute to Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson; Swamp Thing Winter Special #1. Writer Tom King and artist Jason Fabok lead the way with a new story in honor of two legends. An original story from Len Wein that never made it to print, makes it here with art from Kelley Jones. Loving everything about this comic, a must for any true comic fan.
DC works the hyper train with their new Flash Annual #1, stating it’s the start of the “biggest Flash story of 2018”. We’re buying in. Brought to you by Joshua Middleton and Christian Duce.

InvestComics Indie Hot Picks; Indie comics do not always show up on Ebay right way. Please check back on a regular basis, some of the smaller print indie books usually list after new comic book release day or a few days after.

Spawn #281 gave readers their first look at the new character Black Mirror. While we promoted it as the first “full” appearance, it turned out to be a cameo (last page). This Wednesday we get “Hulk #181”, the first full appearance in Spawn #282. The new hero, Black Mirror, will debut in her own comic for Image Comics. So, let the crazy speculation begin? Who will pay $20 for that amped-up cosmic Ghost Rider comic? Maybe lots of cash for that meaningless variant that came out last week? Put your big boy pants on guys/gals. Invest wisely.
Anyone reading this old enough to remember the Hasbro toy Stretch Armstrong? That was the best toy ever. This rubbery doll type thing stretched out when you pulled on its limbs. It was technological advanced for its time. Hours of fun until the curiosity got the best of you. Had to see what was underneath that skin, stretch until it breaks! Anyway, IDW debuts a comic based on the coolest toy ever; Stretch Armstrong and the Flex Fighters #1. Here’s a great little nugget, did you know that Stretch Armstrong first appeared in a comic in the New York Comic Con giveaway back in 2011’s Unit:E. Only 1000 of these were available. Probably down to 500 after everyone lost them, threw them out, ate their lunch on it, etc.
Valiant Entertainment’s hit comic Quantum & Woody hit their stride with their debut issue which included the most variant cover of all time. Check out the follow up this week; Quantum & Woody #2 with more “foil chase covers”. Writer Daniel Kibblesmith and artist Kano.
Chapterhouse Comics; Fantomah #1, Ray Fawkes and Soo Lee. Freelance #1; Andrew Wheeler and Juan Samu.
Brian Denham’s The Tremendous Trump World War T cover (Antarctic Press) and Joe Staton’s The Charlton Arrow #3 (AC Comics) both provide homage Marvel covers. They’re on point otherwise they wouldn’t be a mentioned here.
Chim Chum and the Portly Samurai #1 (American Mythology); Adrian Ropp.
Jack Hammer: Paper Hero (Action Lab); Brandon Barrows and Bill Blankenship.

Each week InvestComics seeks out a comic(s) on Ebay for $100 or less and then brings it to the attention of our fans. We call it IC 100 Club Pick. The idea is to get a great book at a great price. We do not own nor are we selling these comics. The comics are found by a random process. We do not know the ebay seller(s), nor are we promoting the Ebay seller. If you’re a collector seeking new blood in the industry, a reader looking for a new edge of storytelling, then DC has a book for you this week. New Talent Showcase #1 will ‘showcase’ some of DC’s new talent. This comic is definitely worth a look, but that $7.99 price tag may keep some away. Don’t let it deter you too much, it’s not often fans get a comic full of new talent showing off their craft. Maybe one or two or many break out and become a superstar in the industry. Maybe this is their first work. So don’t pass this one shot. DC is probably testing the market here to see if there will be more books like this in the near future. Be sure to make lots of noise at you local comic shop(s) if you want to see more down the road. The last time DC Comics had a New Talent Showcase title was in 1984. Here are some of the names associated with that series as either early work in their career or their first work.
Steve Lightle, June Brigman, Javier Saltares (Early first work; The New Talent Showcase #10 -1984), Norm Breyfogle (Early first work; The New Talent Showcase #11 – 1984), Graham Nolan (Early first work; The New Talent Showcase #14 – 1984).

Check out three DC annuals this week; Batman Annual #1 with writer Tom King and art from David Finch. This annual, as DC Comics puts it, will have a ‘showcase of top talent’ within these pages. We love Batman, we love beginnings (number one issue), love the regular creative team, and we love that there will be a load of other talent in here too. Injustice Gods Among Us Year Five Annual #1. Three separate stories going on in here. One that features fan fav Harley Quinn. She dons the cover too. Superman Annual #1; Written by Peter Tomasi and pencils by Jorge Jimenez. Guest starring the Swamp Thing.

On the coattails of the popular appearance on the Agents of Shield television show, Marvel begins an all new series starring Robbie Reyes as Ghost Rider in Ghost Rider #1. We’re really digging the variant covers, but there is a solid reason to buy this comic on Wednesday. The first appearance of a new villain in a backup story. Here’s a quick fact, did you know that no solo Ghost Rider comic has ever reached issue number 100? Maybe this series bucks that trend. We’ll see.

Ivx #1 sets the wheels in motion for the upcoming comic series Inhumans vs. X-Men.
Marvel’s Deadpool Back In Black #4 Ron Lim cover sure is an eye catcher.

Black Mask Comics releases a new comic series and we all know what that means right? In case you’re a new reader or one of the few who do not know, most new Black Mask Comics sell out fairly quick and the aftermarkets love them. So this week fans get No Angel #1. Written by Eric Palicki and art from Ari Syahrazad. A story about a Hannah Gregory as a possible mistaken identity…..being a alien from space. Looks as though she takes matters into her own hands (see cover). The preview book of No Angel #1 is selling for a premium in the aftermarket. Jump on this comic. Invest wisely. Read comics.

Valiant Entertainment introduces a new member into their family this Wednesday. Savage #1 debuts the new character in his self-titled book and we think it’s going to be a warm welcome on new comic book day. With talents like writer B. Clay Moore and art by Clayton Henry and Lewis LaRosa, this comic is a no-brainer to check out. Look for early sellouts and demand bringing multiple printings down the pike.

Mask Mobile Armored Strike #1 from IDW Publishing should satisfy the need for all of the 80’s fans of the original MASK Series. The Paul Pope variant cover is stellar. A 50/1 ratio. The original DC series; MASK #1 debuted in 1985. IDW also debuts a new Transformer series; Optimus Prime #1. Looks as though an introduction may occur. Artist Kei Zama and writer John Barber bring us the action.
Revolution #5 brings everything together for the IDW universe. An important issue if fans want to see the birth of a continuity universe.

Swamp Thing 1

Top 5 Pick of the week – Swamp Thing #1 – Click to Buy/Bid

Amazing Spider-Man #611 (2009) – The first appearance by Deadpool in a Spider-Man comic. A fantastic book to own since both of these characters are so popular and are starring in their first monthly team up comic. Furthermore, with the Deadpool character becoming an obvious main staple within the Marvel universe, a first team up comic with these two is an easy decision purchase to make for your collection. And that Young cover is becoming a classic as the years go by.

Spider-Man Deadpool #1 – This is the team up comic many Marvel fans have been clamoring for. It’s going to be a great ongoing title. Wait until they bring the Spider-Gwen/Gwenpool team up into the fray as we are predicting. Wow will this be a huge comic. And the Liefeld variant to go along with that team up? Yes, it’s going to be big. Well, we’re getting ahead of ourselves, but that Gamestop Spider-Man Deadpool variant is creating quite a stir in the aftermarket itself!

Howard The Duck #3 – Speaking of Gwenpool, last week InvestComics gave fans a heads up on this variant. There was some kind of delay in putting these out for sale. Now that they go on sale THIS week, they’re sold out! Good luck finding a copy at your local retailer. Click the link, get it on Ebay.

Doctor Strange Vol 4 #4 – Deadpool wins! Wins the most appearances in the InvestComics Top 5 list that is. Here he is again appearing on a random Doctor Strange variant.

Swamp Thing #1 – Swamp Thing gets another redo. Seems many DC Comics these days are, but that’s a conversation for another time. As said in the InvestComics Hot Picks article, Swamp Thing has always fared well for DC as far as longevity is concerned. This title should be no different then past success with writer Len Wein and artist Kelley Jones at the helm. Get your read on here, this is going to be awesome.

Nova #1 9.0

IC 100 Club Pick – Nova #1 (1976) – First appearance of Nova – Click To Buy It Now

Before we hit the Hot Picks this week, we wanted to wish everyone a Happy New Year! To bring in the New Year we’re going to debut a new feature within the Hot Picks articles. It will be called “The IC 100 Club”. This new feature will post a comic book that will be click-able to buy/bid on Ebay and cost $100 (or $99). We do not own/sell the comics we post about. Every click-able comic is from any/all Ebay sellers on Ebay that have the particular comic we feature within their inventory (the same applies to all of our articles – please see our disclaimer). The idea here is to point out a comic on Ebay that is affordable and has some substance/value to it within the $100 mark. This is a trial feature and we will probably expand on this feature as time goes on. As of right now, the InvestComics Facebook page already features a random spot called “InvestComics Ebay Find”. The feature on Facebook gives fans an opportunity to check out random comics we see fit and sharing. Maybe our IC 100 Club will expand on there? Maybe we will have an IC 50 Club pick too? Maybe a featured article on InvestComics? All in good time friends!
The first IC 100 Club book is Nova #1 (1976) graded 9.0. The first appearance of Nova. Grab this for $100 with free shipping. InvestComics has written about the Nova character for years and this book is a beauty. Maybe get it pressed and bump up the grade a bit? Either way, a 9.0 for $100 is a fine purchase. It’s a “Buy It Now”, so good luck!

Four Eyes Hearts of Fire #1 will continue where Four Eyes (2010) left off. The new release will be from the original 2008 team; Writter Joe Kelly and Pencils by Max Fiumara.
Gotta love the disturbingly eerie cover to IDW’s The Eighth Seal #2 (cover at the bottom of this article). Kudos to Travel Foreman here.

NOTE. Please understand that when InvestComics releases the Hot Picks article on Friday that many of the independent comics may not be available on Ebay yet. Most of the time, some of the more obscure titles make their way onto Ebay later on in the week or right on/at/before new comic book day on Wednesday. Be sure to check back and click the links or cover(s) to see if the books you want have been listed on Ebay. They usually show up, so be sure to check back!

Swamp Thing comics have always fared rather well for DC Comics. Many restarts/volumes lasting many years. One of which lasted 14 years. That’s quite an amazing feat to have any comic last that long. The original co-creator, legend Len Wein (writer) will be given the task of making Swamp Thing relevant in today’s crowded superhero genre. Swamp Thing #1 features Len as the writer and art from the great Kelley Jones. We think Swampy will succeed here, not only because of the tremendous talent on this book, but maybe because of the craving of something “different” within the comic book selection on the shelf from one of the “big 2”. We’re not saying there aren’t any assorted titles from DC or Marvel to choose from outside the costumed hero lure, but Swamp Thing is not your average everyday superhero comic.
A fantastic comic to possess in your collection is House of Secrets #92 (1971). Not only is this comic the first appearance of Swamp Thing, but it’s also Len Wein writing with another legend on pencils; Bernie Wrightson. What is there not to love about this comic? Seriously.

The ever so popular Injustice comic story line reaches its pinnacle. Check out Injustice Gods Among Us Year Five #1.

A-Force #1 gets a new number one issue after 6 months of it’s previous number one issue. In the July 2015 number one issue release, Singularity was introduced. She leads the team in the 2016 number one issue this coming Wednesday. Whew, got all that? The coolest thing about all of this? The ridiculously awesome N.W.A. A-Force #1 cover. Ahh, the good ol’ days!

The Vader Down crossover story concludes in Darth Vader #15.
A Deadpool variant cover for the new Doctor Strange Vol 4 #4 comic? Yep. A bit random no? Slow sales??

InvestComics spoke about Howard The Duck #3 (Vol 5) last week as the Marvel Hot Pick of the week. Read that article right HERE if you’d like. It was delayed, it comes out this week and guess what?? It’s sold out.
Two other delayed comics already touched on last week that will release THIS Wednesday; Obi-Wan and Anakin #1 and Rocket Raccoon and Groot #1.

Click on the RED links or the comic cover to buy/bid from All sellers on Ebay.

Here is a copy and paste directly from the InvestComics Facebook page (You really really should get over and like our Facebook page. A lot of individual comic picks, contest announcements and interesting things happening over there!) from November 30th………..
The Spider-Man/Deadpool team-up comic will put two very successful characters together in one book every month. We will most likely see a Spider-Gwen/Gwenpool team-up within these pages too. Probably a Rob Liefeld variant or two as well. With all of that cool stuff waiting in the horizon, here’s the first team-up with Spider-Man and Deadpool for mega cheap on Ebay. X-Force #4 (1991).”
Now granted there are probably enough copies of this comic to fill up Yankees Stadium, but it’s probably close to if not maybe a little more/less than say a New Mutants #98 (1991) comic. Maybe you’ve heard of that comic? And let us stress here, in no way are we comparing the first appearance of Deadpool to the first time Spidey and Deadpool appear in the same comic, but X-Force #4 is a significant issue in regards to the history of these two characters. Another comic to buy would be Amazing Spider-Man #611 (2009). This comic features the first time Deadpool appears in a Spider-Man title. It might be the better buy even though it’s 19 years after they first met up in the X-Force book! It’s the first Spidey book and it probably has a lower print run than the 1991 X-Force book. A bit astonishing actually that it took 19 years for Deadpool to make it over into a Spidey book. Crazy right?
Writer Joe Kelly and artist Ed McGuiness will absolutely kill it with the new team-up title. As we also mentioned in our Facebook post, wait until the first Gwenpool/Spider-Gwen team-up hits. The comic book internet will explode. Especially the Rob Liefeld variant or the Robbi Rodriguez variant. It’s going to be big and we predict it will eventually happen in this title. Anyway you slice it (no pun intended) Spider-Man Deadpool #1 will be sold out very soon. One last thing, that Gamestop variant (pictured at the top of this article) is an instant classic. Only one available on Ebay right now.Probably many more to come, sit tight.
Staying on topic for a moment here. Did the aftermarket go out of your range regarding that first appearance of Deadpool? Fear no more! Behold True Believers Deadpool #1! A reprint of New Mutants #98. The same cover and all too. Neato! (AW). Bet there will be less copies of this comic than the original 1991 version! Not many of these appearing on Ebay at the present time, once again, sit tight. They will be coming.

House_of_Mystery_179_InvestComics Chamber_of_Darkness_Vol_1_7 The_Spectre_9_InvestComics

Bernie Wrightson’s first professional published work was in DC’s House of Mystery #179 (1969). He did a backup story with another comic legend (early work), writer Marv Wolfman. This comic also featured some early work from Sergio Aragones and Neal Adams (Cover Artist).

His first non horror related comic came immediately following his first work. Although not too far from the realm of horror, he penciled a Spectre story in The Spectre #9 (1969)

Bernie continued to do interior backup stories for DC and a few covers for some magazines/indies, but it wasn’t until late 1970 when Marvel Comics stepped in and let Bernie do his first comic cover; Chamber of Darkness #7. His second Marvel cover would turn out to be Creatures on the Loose #10 (1971). Why mention his second cover you may ask? He collaborated on the cover with some guy named Jack ‘King’ Kirby. It also happens to be the first appearance of King Kull.

Green Lantern #82 (1971) turned out to be the first major superhero work. He only did the inks on one page here though. Inks over Neal Adams.

Here’s an interesting thing. Bernie did a cover for House of Mystery #195 (1971) and the name of the story was “Bat Out of Hell”. Look at that cover……..2 months later he’s one of the writers in Batman #237 (1971), which also is the first appearance of the Reaper. Then a few months after that he collaborates with Neal Adams on the Batman #241 (1972) cover. It looks very similar to the House of Mystery cover Bernie did just a few months prior. Was that House of Mystery cover a Batman break-in for Bernie? Possible right? Well just a few months after the Neal Adams Batman collaboration cover came Bernie’s first solo Batman cover happened on Detective Comics #425 (1972).

Creatures_on_the_loose_10_InvestComics Green_Lantern_82_InvestComics House_of_Secrets_92_InvestComics

Dialing back for a second here, House of Secrets #92 (1971) is a prize from the Bernie collection as far as first appearances are concerned. This comic features the first appearance of Swamp Thing. Wrightson is to Swamp Thing as McFarlane is to Spidey, Kirby is to Captain America, Frank Miller is to Daredevil….you get the idea right? Wrightson does the cover and interior here. Fantastic comic to own.

Already mentioned above were some of Wrightson’s first work with Marvel, but about a superhero for Marvel? He’s already done Batman for DC, what about Marvel? After some stints with Kull and Conan, he did his first sort of superhero character in Astonishing Tales #31 (1975). His cover art was a collaboration with Ed J. Harrington and it depicted Deathlok shooting in a blaze of glory. Okay so Deathlok doesn’t do it for you? How about Incredible Hulk #56 (1976)……from France. Yes that’s right. He did a Hulk solo cover that appeared only in France. Good luck getting that comic in NM condition….ever. So what about a SOLO Marvel cover in the States as a first for Bernie in regards to a major Marvel Superhero? Captain Marvel #43 (1976)? Nope, another collaboration. How about Incredible Hulk #197 (1976)? We have a winner! ….And who is that on the cover? Why yes that’s Man-Thing (coincidence? Um, no). What a beauty of a cover too.

Speaking of beauty. Bernie Wrightson’s Frankenstein (pictured above). Wow. Just wow. Marvel at the beauty of this artistry. Unbelievable, magnificent, poetry, classic….there simply are not enough words here.

Batman_241_InvestComics House_of_Mystery_195_InvestComics

Bernie’s first Superman came in Superman #272 (1974) as a pinup. Still counts as a first. He also contributed a pinup in a Superman pinup portfolio in 1984.

Click the RED links or images to buy/bid (Ebay) on any of the comics in this article

Here’s a question to ponder. Since the mention of Batman and Superman, what about Marvel’s flagship character? Spidey! Yes Bernie Wrightson penciled, inked and colored his first Spider-Man story back in 1986. Marvel had these really cool things called graphic novels back in the 80’s that featured original stories in oversized fashion and on super shiny paper. Oh it was so cool, good times, good times….. anyways, “Amazing Spider-Man in Hooky” was the name of Marvel’s graphic novel #22 (1986) that Bernie had complete creative control (except writing duties). This was Bernie’s first and only Spider-Man story he’s ever done. In Marvel graphic novel #29 (1987), Wrightson collaborated with legend Jim Starlin; The Incredible Hulk and the Thing. It wasn’t until the following year that Jim Starlin And Bernie Wrightson would collaborate to make one of the top 10 Batman stories of all time.

Batman: The Cult was and still is a bad as* Batman story. A four issue series that still brings it to this day. Still sort after and if you don’t own it, you should.

Rolling back here, here are two freebie’s for InvestComics fans. Back in 1983, Doctor Strange/Silver Dagger Special Edition #1, cover by Wrightson. This comic should be back on collector radars. With Chew confirmed for an animated treatment, fan fav Poyo looks to play a prominent role.
Swamp Thing 67

A new trailer for the Constatine TV series has debuted and people are excited. Issues of Swamp Thing 37 and Hellblazer 1 are starting to sell well. Look for this issue  to jump when collector realize that it previews Hellblazer 1 although I am not sure if Papa Midnite is in the preview.  If so this issue would then become his true first appearance.

Tales of the New Teen Titans 1

Tales_of_the_NTT_1

Scott Snyder has announced Cyborg will be in Superman/Batman and that means DC Comics Presents 26 will no longer be easy to find.  In all fairness it has been a collectible comic for some time.  But this issue can still be found in back issue bins all across America.  Buy it now and hold on tight because it gives readers the origin of Cyborg!

UPDATE:

Nova8 ( 2008 )  First appearance of Knowhere

2770149-nova_8_dcp_0000

Some time ago I mentioned this little gem that not only features one hell of a cover but is also the first appearance of fan favorite Cosmo.  Well now it might be important for another reason.  Recent GOTG images allude to the possibility of the Celestial head Knowhere as a setting for Starlord and company.

Sandman – Checklist

This week rumors of a Sandman movie have stabilized thanks to Twitter.  Clues to the production include #prelude and talk of Gaiman being involved.  It’s also rumored that WB wants someone other than Goyer to write the script ( thank god!)

There is a rabid fan base for this acclaimed Vertigo series and the market is already buzzing.  Even before the recent news, speculators took to the internet buying up key issues.  You can thank AMC Preacher rumors for that.  It seems collectors are getting more savvy so you can expect issue 1 ( Morpheus’s first appearance ) to command high prices for the foreseeable future.   Here are a few I would stockpile:

Comics Interview Sandman Special 1993

921945

Good luck finding this one!

Sandman 8 ( Karen Berger Editorial Error )

sandmanwings

Errors like this make collectors go nuts.  This one is very rare with an estimated print run of around 600.

Sandman 19 ( printing error )

sandman19

Another printing error puts this one on the list.  Pages 18 & 19 were printed out of order.

Sandman 25 ( First Deadboy Detectives )

30612-4207-34066-1-sandman-the

These detectives are coming back to DC this year and this is their first appearance.  There is also a  limited series written by Ed Brubaker with art by Bryan Talbot and Dave Mckean covers that is worth a look.

Amazing Heroes Swimsuit Special 1,2,3

Sandman 22 ( first Daniel Hall )

30334-4207-33744-1-sandman-the

2000 A.D. 488 ( first published comic work by Neil Gaiman )

When it’s all said and done Mr Gaiman will be remembered as on of the greatest writers in comic history.  His comics have influenced many, helped to cement the quality of  a brand and crossed over into other mediums.  When the Sandman film gets made collectors will once again deplete the original series from every back issue box they can wrap their greedy, wet tentacles around.  But in case you are wondering where the man got his start look no further.  Funny thing-so many of those who set the standard have either received their break from 2000 A.D. or been published in it.  It’s a series worth collecting for many other reasons.  If you have yet to enjoy writing by Grant Morrison, Garth Ennis and also enjoy collecting rare issues, variants, posters, Nemesis the Warlock and badges I suggest this famous UK series.

Swamp Thing 84, 118

37411_20060518103619_largeSwamp_Thing_Vol_2_118

I have mentioned this undervalued gem in recent months.  Once people realize it’s the third appearance of Dream expect prices to rise.

Hellblazer 19

300px-Hellblazer_Vol_1_19

Sometimes it is worth repeating information like this.  Like Swamp thing 84 this issue features a rare early appearance of Dream outside of the regular Sandman series.

This one is a favorite of mine.  It’s an excellent read, difficult to find and it’s treatment of cats makes it worth the full purchase price.
