Each week InvestComics seeks out a comic(s) on Ebay for $100 or less and then brings it to the attention of our fans. We call it IC 100 Club Pick. The idea is to get a great book at a great price. We do not own nor are we selling these comics. The comics are found by a random process. We do not know the ebay seller(s), nor are we promoting the Ebay seller. Any knowing from the Ebay seller of InvestComics or its affiliates is purely coincidental. (See disclaimer for more details).

Ms. Marvel #1

Buy Now

IC 100 Club Pick: Ms. Marvel #1 (1977) 8.0. When Marvel Studios hits theaters with their first female lead comic book movie, it’s going to be huge. It will make movie goers and comic fans forget about the Wonder Woman flick very, very fast. How can we say this? Well first and foremost, it’s an opinion. Secondly, Warner Bros. has not yet had an answer for any of the Marvel movies as far as the “level” goes. Will the Wonder Woman movie be good? Probably, but Marvel will out-do DC with their female lead movie Ms. Marvel. It will be set in modern day and appeal radically to the younger and older female audiences as Disney KNOWS how to do. It will happen. Disney KNOWS marketing. So with that confidence stated, this week’s IC 100 Club Pick is Ms. Marvel #1 (1977) graded at a low 8.0 and the low price of $79.99. This low grade will not matter once the movie hits and the popularity of Ms. Marvel is at its peak. This movie will be huge. This first appearance of Carol Danvers as Ms. Marvel will be untouchable.

Before reading ahead, we feel we need to warn you that our articles contain very harsh truths in them. Not vulgar language, just a good solid dose of honesty. They always have, they always will. If you are easily offended, cannot come to terms that other people have opinions too beside yourself and especially if you’re a fanboy, discontinue reading. Want to know the real deal with Harley Sinn? Where she came from, how she became a villain, etc. Well find out in Harley Quinn And Her Gang Of Harley’s #5 this Wednesday! The origin of Harley Sinn.
The premiere Suicide Squad writer returns for a one shot. Suicide Squad War Crimes Special #1 by John Ostrander.
The introduction of a new hero will happen in Future Quest #4. Writer Jeff Parker and artist’s Steve Rude and Aaron Lopresti are bringing it.
Two DC annuals to check out. First annual ever; Gotham Academy Annual #1 from Becky Cloonan and Brenden Fletcher. The origin of the first Bombshell; Batgirl in DC Comics Bombshells Annual #1 this Wednesday.
As Warner Bros. is a bit late to the superhero movie party, DC is a bit late on the variant cover theme too. Justice League Of America #9 has a Batman v Superman Dawn Of Justice Cover. Who cares right? Well not only is the cover bad as*, it’s drawn by (insert sarcasm) some artist named Jim Lee. $3.99 cover price. We’ll take one please.

The “new” female comic character is still a hot commodity. Mostly hot for a minute, then cools off, but then there are ones that catch on. Will the first appearance of the female Electro in Amazing Spider-Man #17 be a hot ticket? We’ll have to wait and see for about a minute…..or maybe longer.
Marvel will go to the well once again regarding their success with Gwenpool and Spider-Gwen. In All-New Wolverine Annual #1 we’ll see Wolvergwen and Spiderine. Newer mash-up’s here but this time with the all-new Wolverine character. Although the Wolvergwen character looks like a first appearance, a “Gwenverine” character popped up on a variant cover back in August of 2015. Old Man Logan #2 gets the dubious distinction of being that first appearance issue. Seems to be much like the first appearance of Gwenpool, cover only. So is Gwenverine and Wolergwen the same character? We don’t make this stuff up, we just report it.
We’re loving the cover to Silver Surfer #6. It’s the 200th overall issue of Surfer comic book issues. The cover shows many awesome past Silver Surfer comic books surrounding him. It’s neat.

Dark Horse Comics offers fans two number one comics written by two fan fav’s of the industry this week. Witchfinder City Of The Dead #1 will be written by Mike Mignola and World Of Tanks #1 will be written by Garth Ennis. World Of Tanks #1 will be based on a game that has an audience of 110 million players. That’s a whole lot of possible built-in audience to reach! Two debut Dark Horse Comics to pick up. That’s some nice debut reading material here.
IDW Publishing’s Jill Thompsons Killer Inside Me #1 is sold out. A lot of buzz surrounding this book. Look for a possible bounce in the aftermarket as readers latch on to this classic story put into comic book form. They’ll be delighted and the bounce may happen.
It looks as though IDW has an answer to DC’s All-Star Batman. It’s called Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Universe #1. Various A-list creators will contribute to this new on-going TMNT series. Look for possible introductions in this first issue and as the series progresses. This first issue features a back-up story from Kevin Eastman and Bill Sienkiewicz. Now that’s some serious duo firepower. Count us in on this series and especially this first issue.
Spawn #265 will introduce a new character and will also have Ant make an appearance. Ant was introduced in Ant #1 (2012) from Arcana Studio. HER last known appearance of Ant was in Savage Dragon #180 (2012). Will Erik Larsen bring back Ant for good? Hopefully we see more. We’ll wait and see.

Superstar artist Jim Lee is back on a Batman book. Batman Europa #1 will be a four part mini-series featuring top talent in the industry. Written by Matteo Casali and Brian Azzarello. This four part series will be a great read as well as getting your eye candy. What more can a comic fan ask for here? Batman vs Joker by premiere creators, Azzarello, Lee, and more? Yes this is a no-brainer.

Let’s not forget what Jim Lee brought to the table back in 2002/2003 with his iconic Batman run starting with Batman #608 and also creating one of the most iconic Batman/Superman comic covers of all time; Batman #612. He did previous Batman books before those though. And if you’re a Jim Lee fan, you must check out the extensive InvestComics Jim Lee Creator Spotlight checklist right HERE. You’ll find some great Jim Lee books there.

Bizarro #6 will introduce a new villain; Queen Tut. Martian Manhunter #6 features a new female martian character.

A new DC/Vertigo title to check out; Red Thorn #1.

The speculator will have to be on alert this Wednesday for the new Image comic Huck #1. With Mark Millar writing, it is not inconceivable to think that a movie studio will come knocking and before you know it, Huck is announced as a possible movie project. This happens quite often in the Millar camp. The artwork will be done by superstar Rafael Albuquerque. A very simple story here about a man (Huck) with superpowers (assuming) does something nice everyday, but his neighbors keep his good deeds hush-hush, until one day…..! The Image solicit is pushing this comic as something fans have never seen before and will love it. (*knock knock knock) Get the door, we think Universal Studios is knocking.

Click on the RED links or the comic cover to buy/bid from All sellers on Ebay.

Although Marvel’s Black Knight character has had several first appearance as different alias, Dane Whitman would be the one with the most credits. First appearing in Avengers #47 (1967), Black Knight will appear this Wednesday in his own series Black Knight #1 starring as……you guessed it, Dane Whitman. The new series will be written by Frank Tieri. Here’s something to ponder. Marvel (Disney) has yet to even tease anything regarding the “knights” genre. Not even remotely, nothing, zilch, nada. If EVER, Dane Whitman will be tapped as the lead character. He’s been a main staple with the Marvel Universe a long time and he’s been in a ton of Avengers books. Yes indeed, a ponder and a speculative nugget. You’re welcome.

Only three issues in and some silliness has crept into Captain America Sam Wilson #3. This issue features the return of Capwolf. Yes that’s correct, Capwolf. Maybe writer Nick Spencer makes this work, who knows? If you feel captivated by the notion of the Capwolf character, you can get his first appearance in Captain America #405 (1992).

Is there any reason to be excited about The Mighty Thor #1? We all know Jane Foster is Thor. Now we simply don’t care anymore, the climax is over. We’ve been dealt the cards, we saw what we have and we folded. We’re done here. Do we need to carry on the nonsense of having Thor as a female character now? We say, not for long. The whole idea that Jane is battling cancer and losing is a very sad thing. She’s a beloved character, but this may give Marvel the “out” in order to bring back the Thor we all know and love. If sales don’t meet expectations, which we don’t think they will, then Jane will eventually die and Thor will come back. Ms. Marvel #1 on the other hand has more upside if there were to be a side by side longevity comparison. Stronger character traits (not history) and overall more appeal.

At first glance, New Avengers #3 looks as though Superman is on the cover! It’s a bird, it’s a plane, no it’s a Marvel comic!

Sticking with the perplexed department here, what in God’s green earth is Secret Wars Too #1 about?

Marvel will give Spider-Woman another go; Spider-Woman #1. The longest lasting series for Spider-Woman ever was 50 issues. Her second longest? 18 issues. So lets all hope (no pun intended) writer Dennis Hopeless gets the ship right a bit this time. Starting off things with a pregnant Jessica Drew on just about all the covers. That in itself feels a bit odd no? Here’s hoping she has an easier labor than the series will.

Welcome to the InvestComics Hot Picks

(Warning! This is NOT an Iron Man 3 bashing; this is merely just an observation in the flight of the Marvel Studios films from me. If you liked Iron Man 3, that’s awesome, I respect that. If you are easily offended I then ask of you to skip this first paragraph because it’s an opinion based on Iron Man 3 that is not in favor of the movie from ME. Please do not get your panties in a bunch if you proceed ahead. Thank you.)

Have you’ve seen the new Thor: The Dark World movie? This movie was absolutely awesome. It’s setting up for so many things it’s almost too much to bear. The inner child within me was at an all-time high watching this film. The movie is by far the best Marvel movie of all Marvel movies besides the Avengers, in which is “1A” and Thor is “1B”. It was that good, simply amazing. What Marvel is doing, tying all of these movies together is almost historic like. It’s unfortunate that in-between great films we have to sit through movies like Iron Man 3. Won’t apologize for the opinion here, It’s an opinion…..deal. Iron Man 3 was very weak in comparison to the latest Thor film. This was bound to happen though. Eventually there will be a fail in the system somewhere. One of these Marvel Studio movies is going to fall flat (monetarily) at the box office. It’s inevitable. Why? because of a weak story, not because there are “too many comic book movies” (nonsense). But until that happens, we will have to endure the weak stories like the Iron Man 3’s when they do come out. Too many weak stories will eventually catch up, so Marvel Studios better be on top of their game and not throw together the Mandarin as a joke character and Pepper Potts glowing. Understood it’s an Iron Man movie, but the first two worked fine without too much of the tongue in cheek stuff. Let’s get back to basics here. I personally walked out of the theater after watching Thor The Dark World and spoke about it for about 30 minutes. There are memorable scenes, action sequences, storyline, and not once did I talk about the last Iron Man film afterwards. I probably did say “meh” or a few words of disappointment. I honestly can say, I don’t recall one memorable scene in that movie. The ending was a major disappointment with all of the suits flying around, wow that was bad. Although Tony does have a very weak rouge gallery which can actually hurt the franchise; have a team-up with Sub Mariner, Black Panther, etc. to offset the minimal selection one has with his gallery. Maybe that would work? Because another S.H.I.E.L.D. television show on the big screen is not going to cut it. Thor: The Dark World just set the bar higher……Go get em’ Cap, you’re up next.

It’s been all about the crazy giveaways here at InvestComics lately. As mentioned quite a few times here on InvestComics, the variant covers are a bit of overkill to the hobby. But that said, there is a demand for them and comic companies have the right to make money. Who doesn’t like money right? With that in mind, there has been a recent influx of crazy covers and gimmicks coming out. Once again, companies are making money and good for them. Many of the speculators are now worried about the “crash” of the 90’s in the speculators market. I’m here to tell you, there is nothing to fear. Back in the 90’s comic books speculators were not as savvy as the ones of today. Do you still have those out there that buy 10 copies of a number one issue? Or maybe a hot issue? Or a 3D cover? Yes you do and those are the ones that are doomed to fail. Those speculators have no idea how this market works. I’m not going to go into a long dissertation on how and what to do because if you read the weekly InvestComics Hot Picks, you should have a grasp on what to do and what not to do. The true speculator knows how to collect in today’s market to make the most of their money. The collector that hoards, that falls in love with their 3D covers have a portfolio problem on their hands. Follow what InvestComics recommends, and you will be better off. Not to say that that we haven’t picked clunkers either, but a wiser investor makes more than they lose.

Another reason for a non 90’s crash? Warner Bros. and Disney wouldn’t allow it. The comic book markets haven’t seen this much attention in a long time. If the sales slump, the companies will make adjustments. If a comic shop orders too much of something, they too will cut back. The shops and collectors are very frugal with their dollar these days. The overspending will come at the hands of the collector looking to make a killing, they will fail and go away. The same goes with some retail shops. Some shops will order too may 3D covers and be stuck with a boatload of them for years to come, sooner rather than later going into the 50 cent long boxes.

So accountability is that so of the collectors, shops, and comic companies. The 90’s happened because of the greed that overtook each and every one of the aforementioned. There is a market for the speculators in the comic book world; it’s just a wiser one now. The greedy ones will fall by the wayside.

Why the long talk about the 90’s you may ask? A couple of reasons, besides the variant covers this week and every week. Let hit DC Comics first then Valiant Comics in a bit. This week DC goes back to the well again with a “special cover”. Batman (2011 2nd Series) #25 will feature an embossed cover. Ask another question, why is that? Well because it’s issue #25? It has the Riddler in it?  Because the Zero Year “reaches a new level”?  All excuses that don’t really add up or warrant a gimmick cover, but DC Comics is going to cash in here again. The trick here is not to get caught up with the gimmick cover. The comic to go after is the Greg Capullo variant sketch cover. It’s only $95 retail, but signed and CGC graded (9.8 or higher) and you make some cash easily. On second thought here, grab the embossed cover too. It’ll probably go to a second print quickly, but sell the regular cover quickly on Ebay to make a flip. Sit on this a day or two too long and you’ll be stuck with it.

Superman Wonder Woman (2013) #2 has sold out on the retail level. This hot comic will continue to be hot until the whole idea of Superman being romantically linked with Wonder Woman wanes thin. Then again, many readers are not reading this comic for that reason; its good storytelling keeping this comic hot right now. How long will the hot commodity last? That’s a tough call, but until that happens, grab the sold out Tony Daniel sketch variant for $75. Do the same as the Bat book recommended above. And Forever Evil Arkham War (2013) #2 $10 variant is sold out on the retail level. No big deal here because this comic is extremely meaningless in the grand scheme of the aftermarket. Collectors should by this for the love of the series. The last of the DC Comics this week to take a look at is Green Lantern Corps (2011 2nd Series) #25. This comics focal point is on the villain Anarky. The villain was created by writer Alan Grant and artist Norm Breyfogle back in Detective Comics #608 (1989). And one more thing about the Green Lantern cover, doesn’t it bring you flashbacks to the Messiah Complex with Cable holding the baby? Scroll through the gallery of the Hot Picks and see for yourself.

Valiant Comics have been making some very serious noise with their amazing storytelling and art since their comeback. The biggest Valiant Comics event ever is about to take place on new comic book day. With the release of Unity (2013 Valiant) #1 Valiant is looking to cash in and cash in big. They understand that the market wants variant covers and wow are they supplying it. How about 13 variant covers here? Yes Valiant is banking and way to go! Remember the talk we had earlier about the non-informed “new” speculator that thinks they will make lots and lots of money? Well that guy/gal will probably buy all 13 issues. The Valiant Comics fan will buy all 13 copies (which they should or want to because they are simply fans and want their product!), and then you have InvestComics over here. Only two of these comics out of the 13 really need your attention here, for the investment side of course. Both are from the Legend Neal Adams. Get your hands on the sold out $75 Neal Adams Incentive variant and the $150 Neal Adams Black & White sketch Variant. Get a CGC witness to go with you to have Mr. Adams sign them and you’ll be all set. Be sure to get a high grade of course. NOW you’re all set, and as for the other 11 variants, unless there is a short run or a high demand on either the Bart Sears signature book ($25) or the exclusive ($10), not much to lay your money down on here.

Marvel’s 50th anniversary of the X-Men hits this Wednesday with X-Men Gold (2013) #1. Thought this would be a bigger deal, more hoopla, but okay. The big deal is found within the pages inside of this comic though. X-Men stories from Chris Claremont, Walter Simonson, Bob McLeod, Stan Lee, and many others. The $6 John Cassady variant is already sold out. Another sold out X-Men variant Marvel Knights X-Men (2013) #1 from Paolo Rivera. That comic will get $20 from you. Nothing spectacular here unless the MK X-Men title takes off. The Cataclysm Ultimate Spider-Man (2013) #1 variant is sold out; see MK X-Men #1.

Comics to definitely look out for this week are Umbral (2013 Image) #1, sold out at shops. A good showing on this comic can bring back good rewards for you. Noir (2013 Dynamite) #1 will be the same scenario. Right now it’s sold out at the retailer, including the ultra-rare 25 copy variant for $100. If this comic hits the mark with readers, look for that variant to fetch some big bucks. IDW’s Wraith Welcome To Christmasland (2013) #1 is sold out. There is a $15 variant to possible grab out there.

Rounding out the week we have Manifest Destiny (2013 Image) #1, All New Soulfire (2013 Aspen) #1, Clown Fatale (2013 Dark Horse) #1 (proving that covers don’t always sell a comic book because this comic is not sold out yet and looks like it’ll need a good showing to do so), and finally Protocol Orphans (2013 Boom Studios) #1. This comic is not sold out yet, or maybe it won’t be but a side note about this comic to leave you with. Newcomer Mariano Navarro will be the artist on this comic. He’s a nice talent. If you feel so inclined to search out his first work, it’s not that long ago. Look for Descendant #1 from Image Comics (2009) in the 50 cent boxes.

Invest wisely
