1st look at Scarlet Spider #1

The clone called Kaine goes from villain to hero, or more likely, anti-hero in this spin-off from SPIDER-ISLAND. Get it? SPIN-off? Spider?

::sigh::

Your First Look At SCARLET SPIDER #1!

Get ready for a new brand of web-slinging action in your first look at Scarlet Spider #1! From the red-hot creative team of Chris Yost & Ryan Stegman, Kaine – the all-new Scarlet Spider – finds himself on the run  in Texas after saving New York City from becoming the world’s largest spider nest during Spider-Island. But when his escape is stopped by a super-powered crime syndicate, Kaine must put an end to their corruption the only way he knows how…violently.

“Scarlet Spider is a book that can deal with a character much like Peter Parker but at darker, more difficult place in his life,” said Stephen Wacker, Marvel Senior Editor. “The violent choices he’s made through years of struggle—the sins of youth, so to speak—have come at a brutal cost. He may hope that the things he’s done will be left to the dusty, yellowed pages of history, but someone ALWAYS remembers who you used to be.”

Redefining power & responsibility, no fan can miss the brutal debut of Scarlet Spider #1 hitting comic shops everywhere, this January.

THE CAST OF DOCTOR WHO IS GETTING THE BLUEWATER BIO-COMIC TREATMENT

THE CAST OF DOCTOR WHO IS GETTING THE BLUEWATER BIO-COMIC TREATMENT

Long before the Enterprise traveled to the stars or Luke Skywalker was a gleam in the eye of Darth Vader, a thief with two hearts stole a time machine and traveled the universe several times over and saved the lives of
countless billions. Now as the British science fiction show, ³Doctor Who,² celebrates its fast approaching 50th anniversary, Bluewater Comics is sharing their latest bio-comic ³Orbit: The Cast of Doctor Who² with readers
in January 2012.

³Orbit: The Cast of Doctor Who² will come in both a graphic novel and single-issue form. Written by, Paul Salamoff and drawn by Jaime Martinez Rodriguez, Scott Boyce and DJ Burgess with covers by DC artist Joe Phillips.

³Doctor Who² debuted on the BBC in 1963 and was played by William Hartnell. When Hartnell decided to leave the role, it was then decided the Doctor could regenerate his appearance into another actor. Since then, over 11
actors have played the Doctor such as Tom Baker , Paul McGann and the current Doctor, Matt Smith and each will be featured in both versions of ³Orbit: The Cast of Doctor Who.² However, the graphic novel will feature a
bio on Peter Cushing who played the Doctor in two feature length movies, though he is not considered part of the 11 official actors, Bluewater wanted to mark his contribution.

³At Bluewater Comics we felt that a show like Doctor Who needed to have a bio-comic done,² said Darren Davis, president of Bluewater Comics. ³There were so many fine actors who played the role of the time traveler, we just wanted to highlight the careers of a handful of the actors.²

Writer Paul J. Salamoff said he has adored ³Doctor Who² since he was a child. ³I have been obsessed with ŒDoctor Who¹ for as long as I can remember,² said Salamoff. ³My office is literally filled with ŒDoctor Who¹
Toys, Books, DVD’s and Daleks. Lots of Daleks!²

Salamoff said writers could continue telling stories about the Doctor for another 50 years. “I find that the possibilities with the character are endless and the stories touch on every aspect of science fiction that I
love,² said Salamoff.

The ³Orbit² series was launched earlier in 2010 that serves a pop culture companion to Bluewater Comics successful ³Female Force,² ³Political Power² and ³Fame² series. The bio-comic allows Bluewater to delve into the history of certain newsworthy entertainers and explains how a person has achieved the level of office in the government.

Bluewater Comics biography comic book series has been featured on CNN, The Today Show, TV Guide, USA Today, People Magazine as well as thousands of other places. This issue will sell out fast, so make sure you pre-order it.

IMAGE COMICS RAISES HELL (ON EARTH)
El Torres’ Nancy In Hell Returns This January With All-New Miniseries

Berkeley, CA – 29 November 2011 — She’s already fought her way out of the depths of hell, armed only with a chainsaw and her badass attitude. Come January, the voluptuous Nancy will be topside again, but she’s about to find herself in Hell on Earth!

Spanish comics scribe El Torres has enlisted the intricately detailed artwork of Enrique Lopez Lorenzana and coloring of Fran Gamboa, to render even the beastliest citizens of Nancy’s Hell as breathtaking. This 4-issue Grindhouse inspired miniseries presents the follow up to last years’ NANCY IN HELL miniseries, a take-no-prisoners tale of one woman versus the greatest evil. Now with the Gates of Hades left wide open, not even the angels in heaven can save our world from the hordes!

“It’s not just because of the limitless special effects budget that the comics medium offers that we have big monsters, small monsters, tiny monsters, tentacled monsters, smelly monsters, and hot chicks,” explained El Torres. “It’s because I have great artists taking my words and transforming them into awesome pictures. I never believed I could visit Nancy again, but thanks to Enrique and Fran, here we are again!”

“To depict these hellish nightmares from El Torres’ mind pouring into San Diego city it’s both a challenge and a pleasure,” added Lorenzana. “Ryp did a wonderful job in the first miniseries, now it’s my turn, and I’m really happy to have the chance of design new monsters in almost every page!”

NANCY IN HELL (ON EARTH) #1 (NOV110371), a 32-page full-color horror comic book for $3.99, will be on sale in stores and on digital platforms on January 25, and will be available for order in the November issue of Previews. NANCY IN HELL, VOL. 1 TP (NOV1000433, ISBN: 978-1-60706-354-4) collects the entire first story arc and is available for reorder now.

InvestComics Comic Hot Picks 11-30-11

Welcome to InvestComics Comic Hot Picks 11-30-11

Avengers’ origin series leads off this week, this time following the foundation of Thor. InvestComics’ Comic Hot Picks from 9-29-10 features one of the most comprehensive Thor checklists you will find on the internet today. Go check it out by clicking right HERE. Back when that article was published, Thor’s first appearance was a whopping $25,000. His first appearance in Journey into Mystery #83 (1962) today goes for $46,000. That’s a 84% gain! Better investment than some blue chip stocks.

One of the strangest team ups since Archie meets the Punisher comes out this week from the same publisher. If you thought that Archie meets the Punisher was a weird concept, how about Kiss meets Archie #1? Funny how 35 years ago Kiss was frowned upon as “Satan music” or “Devil worshipers”, now they’re in an Archie Comic!

Probably one of the best cover ideas in comic book history is linked to the rock band Kiss. If you’re not aware of it, here is a short version. When Marvel released the Kiss Marvel Comics Super Special #1 in 1977, they wanted to do something that had never been done before. So they set up their photo cameras (for proof), hired a notary (more proof), got a hold of a phlebotomist (legal vampire doctors), and drew blood from all 4 band members. What for you ask? Well to inject the blood of the band mates into the red ink for the cover, duh! Isn’t that just a wild concept?? Who comes up with this stuff? That “real blood” cover/comic goes for $140. Don’t believe this? Google it. No not the price, the blood story.

However, that Marvel comic was not the first appearance of the Kiss band within the pages of a comic. Howard the Duck #12 (1977) holds the distinctive cameo at $24, the very next issue Howard the Duck #13 (1977) is listed as the first appearance of Kiss and comes in at $28. Those were done in regular red ink.

Moving on from one history lesson to another, Marvel’s History of the Marvel Universe #1 is said to catch everyone up to speed, new and old, from Fantastic Four to Fear Itself. All of that history…….in 48 pages?

This week’s tribute cover goes to Ultimate Comics Ultimates #4. It pays homage to one of the greatest Marvel events ever (back when events mattered) to Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars #1 (1984). This once hot commodity is now only $6.

Guess it’s a history week here on the Hot Picks. Atlas Comics brings some history themselves this week. Back in 1975 they debuted Wulf #1 ($14), The Grim Ghost #1 ($8), and Phoenix #1 ($12). This week they bring all 3 of these characters back with individual covers in Atlas Unified number one issues. If Atlas hits on this with success, well just look at those back issue prices, wow they look inviting don’t they? An look at that, connecting covers too.

Two more independents to check out this week, My Best Friend’s a Booger #1 (possibly the best comic book title ever) from Arcana Comics, and mega sold video game comic Uncharted #1. If you’d like to watch a great review of Uncharted the video game from Jared Amundson and David Lampe on InvestComics, click HERE

Check out the covers of the week below. Click on the image to go to the next cover.

See you next week.

Invest wisely.

InvestComics Comic Hot Picks 11-23-11

Welcome to InvestComics’ Comic Hot Picks 11-23-11

As we’ve already stated in previous Hot Pick articles, DC continues to reign supreme on the front lines as far as new storylines, first appearances, new origins, and new villains. So be sure to stay on top of those books! The million dollar question now for DC is when will the first Crossover/Event hit? Did someone say “summer 2012?”

Avengers Origins comes out this week with a weaker cast than last week (Last week featured a solo Luke Cage actually).  Quicksilver and Scarlett Witch are the focal points. Although not known for their strong presence within the pages of a comic these days, they would probably translate better onto a big screen. It really would be a pleasant surprise to see Scarlet pop up in the new Avengers film. And just in case you’re wondering, with all of this Avengers talk, these two did not first appear in an Avengers book.  But you knew that already, right? They first appeared in The X-Men #4 (1964). The starting bid comes in around the $2800 range. The drawback here is the non household (weak) first appearances (also including the first appearance of the Toad). The plus side is it has Jack Kirby pencils and cover art.

Newer character Tanarus is the new God of Thunder in Mighty Thor #8. In case you missed his first appearance, it’s in Fear Itself 7.2. Thor……. 7.2? Is this necessary? Strange.

Fantastic Four hits a milestone this week with issue #600. You’d figure with all the relaunches, last issues, and it’s funny how we always get that anniversary issue! And what’s human Torch doing on the cover? Didn’t he die? Anyway, check out the creator filled, 104 pages, “please inquire for pricing” anniversary issue!

Need some help with this one folks. Frank Miller is paid some kudos this week with a couple of tribute covers. The first one is a no doubter with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #3. A nod to Frank’s Epic Daredevil run, and the awesome cover artist Fred Hembeck borrows from is Daredevil #175. The second tribute is one that is very puzzling. The new Dungeons and Dragons #13 cover by Steve Ellis pays homage to a Wolverine cover that this writer just can’t seem to find. The image of the cover remains in the brain, but the cover number or title slips the mind. If anyone would please point out the issue, this would be great (I’ll be able to sleep!). There is a cover that features Wolverine in a finger motion with claws out that is not the Frank Miller Wolverine #1 (1982). The D&D cover also brings me back to Todd Mcfarlane’s Incredible Hulk #340. But there is that ONE cover (pin up Image maybe?) that has the same exact pose as the D&D cover with Wolverine. Please help!

Here are a couple of Independents to check out this week. Jurassic Strike Force #0 from Zenoscope Entertainment looks very entertaining. And with the holiday’s right around the corner, the great artistry of Billy Tucci brings us A Child is Born.

Check out the covers of the week below. If you have a cover that you think should have made it, share with us! See you next week.

Invest wisely.

Happy Thanksgiving from everyone here at InvestComics.

PunisherMAX R.I.P

Frank has been through some stuff in his life, but this…..this seems serious. Read below to see what Marvel has in store for PunisherMax.

This February, prepare for the Punisher story you never thought you would read as Jason Aaron & Steve Dillon bring their epic run on PunisherMAX to an end with PunisherMAX #22. Frank Castle has been through it all and just when you think you know what’s coming in the series finale, think again.

“It’s been a big sick bloody thrill working on this series and a right honor following in the footsteps of Garth Ennis,” explained Aaron. “I must say, I’m as proud of this series as anything I’ve ever done at Marvel, in large part because of the amazing art team of Dave Johnson, Matt Hollingsworth and of course Steve Dillon. This was always intended to be one big story, with a very specific beginning, middle and a slam-bang mother of an end. I’m afraid I can’t say any more about the ending than that….other than that it gave me chills, just getting to
write it.

“I’ve drawn a lot of Frank Castle over the last dozen or so years and I’ve been lucky enough to work with some really good writers while doing so,” said Dillon. “Jason has really delivered on this one, so much so
that I wait for the script to arrive in my inbox like a fan waiting for the book to hit the shelves in the store. He’s taken some great characters, like the Kingpin and Bullseye, and given them his own MAX twist. He’s also taken Frank on a tortuous, personal journey and it’s all been great fun to draw.”

To ensure retailers have enough copies to meet demand, Marvel will be going back to press on PunisherMAX #17 and PunisherMAX #18. The chapters kicking off “Homeless,” the name of Aaron and Dillon’s final arc, are only a taste of what’s in store for Frank Castle and Marvel wants to make sure no fan misses the beginning of the end.

“The day has come.  You always knew the Punisher’s one-man war against organized crime would end bad, but you never knew how bad,” added Marvel Editor In Chief, Axel Alonso. “With PunisherMAX #22 Jason Aaron and
Steve Dillon bring the tragedy of Frank Castle’s life to a boil and their epic run to a bloody climax that will haunt readers for years to come.”

Retailers should check the Marvel Mailer and Diamond Retailer Site for information on ordering PunisherMAX #17 Second Printing Variant & PunisherMAX #18 Second Printing Variant. Marvel urges retailers to check
their orders on all remaining issues of PunisherMAX (including a new on-sale date for PunisherMAX #20) as this series continues to garner acclaim and buzz.

Hound Comics, Inc. to Launch Three New Titles Before Year’s End

*Super Hero, Webcomics, Female Spy… Oh My! Hound Promises a Luscious Holiday Season***

*Hound Comics, Inc. to Launch Three New Titles Before Year’s End***

*New York, New York – November 16, 2011 –* It was officially announced earlier this week that Hound Comics, Inc. has signed on some incredible new talent in order to expand the Hound Comics Division.  “We are currently gearing up for a couple of amazing releases in the next few weeks leading up to years end!” explained Etan Wish; Director of Operations.  “Keeping in line with our mantra of ‘lead by example’; we have brought on the next wave of creators who deserve their time to shine!” says Hound President & CEO, William ‘Brimstone’ Kucmierowski, “Hound has built up a reputation of quality, so I’m anticipating big things for these new titles!”

One of the new releases comes from the father/son team of Chris R. Notarile and Chris Notarile, Sr. entitled, *The Protector*.  *The Protector* is the ultimate noir piece with a great story backed up by phenomenal artwork. “When I saw the raw pencils on this project, my jaw literally dropped to the floor… it’s that good!” said, Thiago Castro; Director of Graphic Design.  Offering the base of an impressive cult following within the ‘fan-film’ genre, young Chris’ success certainly shines through the innovative and amusing take he has on popular classic franchises.  Now, Chris brings his imagination straight to the head of the class with his vision of this new hero. “I’m not looking to break the mold or recreate the wheel here; I love the quintessential hero as much as the next person.  I’ve stayed true to the ‘super’ blueprint, I just adjusted it enough to make the Protector unique in a sea of copycats.” says Notarile.

Hound has its fair share of legendary artists including Terry Naughton (Disney) and Rich Arons (Tiny Toons, Animaniacs); but new title *M*3 dons the artistic sequentials of the great Vicente Alcazar (Jonah Hex – DC). Being the brainchild of author Erica Schultz, *M3* features a female lead that is not only memorable; but also breathes life into a deep rooted story line.  “The character has literally lived in my head for so many years; it was about time that she made her way out!” says Schultz.

“In addition to the expansion of the print titles, we have begun releasing our weekly web based comic series, *Hound Around Town* featuring art by newcomer, Lauren Ladore.” says Frank Lamberti, CIO. “We will release a new comic once a week on Friday’s to keep the homepage fresh for our repeat visitors.”

Hound Comics has also released a brand new free application on iTunes with partners Blue Rocket Labs.  *A Collection of Art* featuring excerpts from the private sketch books of Hound artists including Shah, Naughton, Castro, Sanwald and Theresa Finnelli (Border-Pups Series) is now available for download at no cost.  Blue Rocket Labs will be producing all of the applications on the publication side including all Hound Comics, Hound Kids and Hound Publishing based titles.  “We are excited to not only have the ability to offer our entire library to readers on the move; but to partner with a results oriented company such as Blue Rocket Labs is truly a privilege.” says Kucmierowski.

Hound VP, Sajad Shah also recently announced a new addition to the art team, Pinn Soban.  Soban, who will be initially be concentrating on the Luscious based spin off *Luscious: Riker’s Island* written by Brimstone has signed on as an official Hound team member.  “Pinn has large shoes to fill between Sajad’s illustrations and running point for the main man himself, we are all impressed with his skills and overall work ethic… he’ll fit in perfectly here at Hound.” says Mina Sanwald, Artist & Animator for Hound.  Sanwald, who is currently working on two major projects for the company (*The Big Book of Luscious Chicken* and the Borderhounds spin off *Hunt of the Jaguar*) is overly protective of the Luscious character proclaiming, “If I didn’t feel justice would be done, I would have put my foot down!”

InvestComics Comic Hot Picks 11-16-11

Welcome to InvestComics Comic Hot Picks 11-16-11. This week Marvel gets the spotlight again, but DC continues to bring it with their relaunch, introducing new characters, new origins, new powers, new villains, and so forth. So be sure to check out the DC books for the great stories and intro’s going on.

Marvel’s Avengers Origin titles are a great way to learn about some characters that aren’t within the mainstream, i.e. Spidey, Wolverine, etc. Case in point last week with Avengers Origins: Vision #1. Yes we have all seen these origins a million times, but why not see them again? What’s old is new again. Just like Vision’s origin book last week, this week we get a look at another hero that simply should get their due. Unlike Vision in many ways, Luke Cage would be a tremendous brand if given the right direct. One area that Marvel is lacking on the motion picture side is having an African American hero. Why not start with a character that has been around for almost 40 years? Luke’s presence on the screen would be everything that the Punisher should be. So with that said, if you’re looking for a nice first appearance book at an affordable price with some upside to it, look for Luke Cage Hero For Hire #1 (1972). Comics Price guide list this comic at $80. A comic origin issue with a fantastic character, with upside, and creators Archie Goodwin and John Romita Sr. attached to it. That’s a buy folks.

Like variant covers? Marvel will be releasing a comic dedicated to the variant cover summer campaign “I am Captain America”. Forty pages of beautiful variants that you can pay only $3.99 for instead of $25 for one. Granted the collectors rare ratio isn’t here, but if you simply cannot afford OR don’t feel like paying a premium for the originals, buy this for the pure eye candy.

Speaking of rare comics, this week’s Kapow: Guinness World Record Special #1 will be just that. The fastest comic ever made, less than 12 hours. There are so many great things going on with this comic. First and most importantly, all the proceeds from this comic will go to Yorkhill Children’s Hospital in Scotland. Second thing, names within this collaboration include Millar, Romita Jr., Leinil Yu, Jock, Quitely, Gibbons, and on and on the names go. Thirdly, the cost will be only $2.99, and the last thing that is quite awesome here is that there will only be 10,000 of these made! Great cause, great creators, great price, great collector’s item.

X-Factor #227, someone bites the dust…..no for real. Sure they’ll be back a couple of years from now, but NOW is now.

Some Independents to check out this week, Image Comics’ Mudman #1 form Paul Grist, Locke and Key: The Guide To Known Keys #1 may be the first comic ever about keys. Wonder if it’ll have my car keys in there. “Scout” Legend Tim Truman teams up with his son Ben and produces Hawken #1. Incidentally, Tim’s first published work is in First Comics Starslayer #10 (1983). It can be found in a dollar bin at your LCS or Con. This is unbelievable but true! IDW’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is doing very well. Now IDW will go with TMNT Micro Series #1 Raphael. This isn’t the first time Raphael goes solo. Mirage Publishing did the Micro Series thing with Raphael in 1985. That number one issue at one time fetched some decent cash, in today’s market though the offer stands at only $10.

That’s it for this week. Check out 16 eye popping covers of the week below.

Invest wisely.

LOS ANGELES, CA (November 9, 2011) – The Producers Guild of America (PGA) announced today that internationally acclaimed comic book legend Stan Lee will receive the Producers Guild’s 2012 Vanguard Award. The award will be presented to Lee at the 23rd Annual Producers Guild Awards ceremony on Saturday, January 21st at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles.

Known to millions as the man who propelled Marvel Comics to its preeminent position in the comic book industry, Lee’s famous co-creations include Spider-Man, The Incredible Hulk, X-Men, The Fantastic Four, Iron Man, Daredevil, The Avengers, Silver Surfer and Dr. Strange, among many others.

“Stan Lee’s creative vision and imagination has produced some of the most beloved and visually stunning characters and adventures in history,” said Producers Guild Awards co-chairs Paula Wagner and Michael Manheim. “He not only has created content that will forever be in our culture but continues to make strides in the digital and new media realms, keeping the comic book industry fresh and exciting. Stan’s accomplishments truly encompass the spirit of the Vanguard Award and we are proud to honor him.”

“I am extremely appreciative that the Producers Guild has chosen me for this distinguished award,” said Lee. “I am eager to continue to expand comic book storytelling into the digital space and am honored to be awarded alongside such amazing visionaries.”

The Producers Guild’s Vanguard Award recognizes achievements in new media and technology. Previous recipients of the award include George Lucas, John Lasseter, YouTube founders Chad Hurley, Steve Chen and Will Wright, and the 2011 recipients Michael V. Lewis and Joshua Greer of RealD.

As a producer, writer, editor, publisher, actor, host and executive, Stan ‘the Man’ Lee has exerted more influence over the comic book industry than anyone in history, creating or co-created 90% of Marvel’s most recognized comic characters. His creations have spawned books, films, television series, video games, web series, Broadway shows and more.

Lee became publisher of Marvel Comics in 1972 and is presently the Chairman Emeritus of Marvel Enterprises, Inc. and a member of the Editorial Board of Marvel Comics. In 1977, he introduced Spider-Man as a syndicated newspaper strip which now appears in more than 500 newspapers worldwide. In 1981 Lee transformed his Spider-Man and Hulk creations into syndicated television cartoons, supervising such animated series as “X-Men,” “Spider-Man” and “The Hulk.” Lee has also executive produced such recent films as the SPIDER-MAN franchise, IRON MAN I & II, THOR, the X-MEN franchise, HULK, CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER and GHOST RIDER, among many others.

In 2001, Lee co-founded POW! Entertainment where he currently serves as Chairman and Chief Creative Officer, with Gill Champion and Arthur Lieberman, to develop film, television and video game properties. The company recently announced two projects with 1821 Comics, a multi-platform imprint titled “Stan Lee’s Kid’s Universe” and a graphic novel titled Romeo and Juliet: The War, a reimagining of the story 200 years in the future. POW! also recently partnered with Michael Eisner’s Vuguru to produce original digital content and separately partnered with A Squared Entertainment and Archie Comics to release the first title of the Stan Lee Comics banner “Mighty Seven” in 2012. Additionally, POW! is developing seven new movie franchises, two TV series, two live-action shows and their first non-American superhero to provide new characters across various platforms for a new generation of fans.

DARK HORSE COMICS TO PUBLISH CAITLÍN R. KIERNAN’S ALABASTER!

November 9, MILWAUKIE, OR—Caitlín R. Kiernan is the author of numerous works of dark
fantasy and science fiction, including nine novels, several comic-book series (including Sandman spinoff The Dreaming), and over two hundred published short stories and novellas. Now, she brings her tales to the land of Dark Horse Comics.

Alabaster is based on Caitlín R. Kiernan’s fan-favorite Dancy Flammarion stories, a dark fantasy series centered around a female teenage protagonist of striking appearance and hidden, terrible depths. For nearly as long as she can remember, seventeen-year-old Dancy Flammarion has fought monsters, cutting a bloody swath
through the demons and dark things of the world, aimed like a weapon by a merciless seraph, more taskmaster than guardian.

Part continuation, part reimagining, the series begins with Dancy making and breaking an oath in the name of her seraph, who subsequently abandons her. Injured and alone, Dancy has to find her own way for the first time in her life—and the wolves are closing in.

Alabaster will first appear in Dark Horse Presents #9 (on sale February 22, 2012), followed by the five-issue miniseries Alabaster: Wolves, which throws readers into Dancy’s world with a bang, strips away her seraph, and introduces the two characters who will become her long-term supporting cast. Alabaster: Wolves #1 is on sale April 11, 2012.

Alabaster features artwork by Eisner Award–nominated artist Steve Lieber and cover art by Greg Ruth!

Praise for Caitlín R. Kiernan

“One of our essential writers of dark fiction . . . a cartographer of lost worlds.”—New York Times

Praise for Steve Lieber

“Lieber’s art is stunningly refined . . . This is how a comic book should look.”—Comic Book Resources

COLIN LORIMER’S UXB COMES TO DARK HORSE PRESENTS #10!

November 9, MILWAUKIE, OR—Dark Horse Presents is renowned not only for publishing original work of comics luminaries but also for presenting powerful emerging voices of graphic fiction. Such is UXB by Colin Lorimer (Earp: Saints for Sinners), debuting in Dark Horse Presents #10.

In a shattered future postwar London, powerful experimental “life suits” that permanently graft to human bodies are created to counter the threat of terrorism. Given to three brothers, the suits could make the trio the saviors of mankind—if they can ever get past their obsessions for film, violent video games, and porn. Following in the dark footsteps of dystopian visions such as The Adventures of Luther Arkwright, DMZ, and Give Me Liberty, Lorimer’s UXB is challenging, thought provoking, laced with gallows humor, and illustrated with consummate skill.

“I’m thrilled that UXB has found a home within the hallowed pages of DHP. The journey of UXB is going to be rather dark and twisted and there’s no better place for that story to be told than Dark Horse,” says Colin Lorimer.

While you wait for Dark Horse Presents #10, be sure to check out Colin’s work at UXBComic.com.

Dark Horse Presents #10 is on sale March 21, 2012.

InvestComics Comic Hot Picks 11-9-11

Welcome to InvestComics Hot Picks for the week of November 9th 2011.

It’s all about Marvel this week, let’s jump right in.

Spider-Man will be coming at us with another number one issue this week. Although the title isn’t everyone’s cup o’ Joe, uh tea; Avenging Spider-Man #1 it will find success in the early going. The new title is brought to us by writer Zeb Wells and Artist Joe “Mad” Madureira. The Marvel brass is touting this comic as the great return of Joe Mad. Well since it’s a return, let’s go back in time for a moment to see where he began in regards to his work and on Spidey. Joe’s first professional work can be found in Marvel Comics Presents #89 (1991). His first Spider-Man work however was a Spider-Man cover on Spider-man vs. Dracula #1 (1994). And as far as Zeb Wells, his first Spidey work was in Peter Parker Spider-Man #42 (2002). All of these comics can probably be found at your local comic shops in the one dollar bins. They shouldn’t be that hard to find at all. That said the Marvel Comics Presents #89 is a nifty collector’s item.

The biggest take away for the Avenging Spider-Man book is that it comes in 7 variant covers. There really is no need for the abundance of variants. Why not have 2 covers? A regular and variant. Oh yes wait…..cha ching.

Marvel’s second “Avenge” title focuses in on a very cool character that never seems to get his due. Avengers Origin: Vision #1 will bring back the Vision in this one shot. Right now over on ebay though, Vision seems to be getting his due there. Visions first appearance in Avengers #57 (1968) on ebay, a couple of CGC 9.2’s are going within the $800 range. That’s some nice cash for a risky collector’s item.

Another homage cover to talk about this week. It’s an oblivious one, but fun nonetheless. This time Marvel borrows from their collection. Wolverine #18 pays a tribute to Spider-Man #1 (1990) from Todd McFarlane. Of course you saw that one right away, but for those few who don’t know, check out the side by side images. Lee’s X-Men, Liefeld’s New Mutants, McFarlane’s Spidey, fun times they were, fun times.

Don’t forget to check out Point One #1. It gives readers a glance into the future in 2012 for Marvel Comics.

Scroll through the covers of the week below. As always, cover artist doing their thing. Awesome.

See you next week, Invest wisely.

Written by Dragon Age Lead Writer, David Gaider, and featuring original art by Chad Hardin (Stan Lee’s The Traveler, Web of Spider-Man, The Spirit), the deep and fascinating lore surrounding the Dragon Age universe will unfold, as new adventures will come to light in the comic series.

The thrilling, six-part series will feature a riveting story that takes fans of the critically-acclaimed Dragon Age franchise deeper into the RPG’s mythology. Readers will follow Alistair, Isabela, and Varric, three important heroes from Dragon Age: Origins and Dragon Age II, as they travel to Antiva, a nation ruled by deadly
assassins. The comic series’ heroes will embark on an epic journey to uncover one of the greatest secrets in the history of Thedas while encountering a dangerous prison break and the mysterious and feared Witch of the Wilds.

Dark Horse Comics will release the six-part comic series exclusively at www.digital.darkhorse.com for $0.99 each starting February 22, 2012.
