InvestComics HOT PICKS

[scrollGallery id=249]

With a slightly heavy number one issue week, there are a few that call for one’s attention. If you sleep on them, they will sellout and you’ll be left pondering what if? Well maybe not that dramatic, but you will be saying something like ‘why didn’t I listen to InvestComics?!’ One comic that heeds your calling is called Movement (2013 DC) #1. Here’s the scoop on this comic. This book includes the government, revolt, greed, corruptness and super-humans. Yes it’s going to be a super ride indeed. The kicker here as to why it will be a story like no other is quite simple. Gail Simone is writing it. This alone is enough to not only make it an interesting read, but a probable sellout will occur. Get your copies early.

The second comic to look for this Wednesday has to be Ten Grand (2013 Image) #1. Much like the aforementioned, this comic has creative star power as well. Writer J. Michael Straczynski along with artist Ben Templesmith bring us a story of love and death, literally. This book will indeed sellout folks, do not miss it. If you procrastinate you will be waiting a few weeks for a second print to read while you pay a Marvel Super Special #32possible premium in the aftermarket for the first print. Don’t say InvestComics didn’t give you a heads up on this one.

There is an amazing thing happening this Wednesday according to Ape Entertainment. It actually took 44 years to happen. Sesame Street will be a comic book for the first time ever! Hard to fathom isn’t it? While to claim to be a “first” does hold water, it really isn’t the first time the gang has appeared in a comic book related atmosphere. Big Bird, Bert, Ernie, Kermit, Miss Piggy, and a host of others first appeared in Marvel Comics’ Marvel Super Special #32 (1984). It was a magazine, not a comic, but printed by a comic company. So technically they appeared in a mag first, it was in fact reprinted in early 1985 in comic book form though. There is a fabulous reason why a collector should have this in their stash too. Ready? Legend Jim Starlin was the writer on this comic. Yes, THAT Jim Starlin. So does Ape Entertainment have a true claim here of a first? Well yes and no. It’s the first Sesame Street titled comic book ever, but the characters have appeared in the pages of Marvel already individually. Kudos to Ape Entertainment for getting the first Sesame title out though!

Black Bat (2013 Dynamite) #1 is based on the 1930’s hero. The story from back in the 1930’s says that Batman and Black Bat were so similar that lawsuits started flying, but quickly settled down, thus creating a happy world for both characters to co-exist. I wonder who came out ahead. Anyways, check out the new take on the Black Bat this week. Who knows maybe we’ll get a Tim Burton Black Bat movie one day.

Previously mentioned in a recent InvestComics Hot Picks, Mister X was a big deal back in the early 80’s. The number one issue called for a nice premium in the aftermarket. These days are a bit different though for Mister X in the back issue bins. However, with the efforts put forth in today’s climate of trying to get that next movie deal, one never knows when a new beginning may if ever hit it big again. So with that said, check out Mister X Eviction (2013 Dark Horse) #1 this week and make your own call on whether THIS is the time again for Mister X. His first appearance came from Vortex comics in Mister X #1 (1984).

Some other comics to be on your watch list this week are Suicide Risk (2013 Boom) #1, Victories (2013 Dark Horse) 2nd Series #1, Shadowman (2012 4th Series) #0, and Cyborg 009 Chapter 000 (2013 Archaia) #0. Note: Cyborg 009 first appeared in Cyborg 009 Vol. 1 (2003).

With the Iron Man 3 movie coming out next week, what better time than now to tell a NEW secret origin of Tony Stark with Iron Man (2012 5th Series) #9. A bit strange how Marvel works sometimes. Sticking to topic here, Thanos Rising (2013) #2 continues the awesomeness of Thanos’ origin. (Iron Man #55, buy it, still not too late! InvestComics had this comic as a buy in its very first issue of the InvestComics magazine more than 6 years ago and continued for years telling investors to buy this comic. Hope you listened.). Age of Ultron (2013 Marvel) #7 continues on the path of creating a new Marvel Universe, but the cover strikes similarities to Secret Wars #1 doesn’t it? Well so many covers do these days, but just sharing a thought about the cover. Scroll through the Hot Picks covers and see a side by side.

That’s it for this week. Be sure to sign up to the InvestComics Newsletter. You’ll become instantly cooler. True story.

See you next week, invest wisely.

We’re thrilled to add these brands to our ever growing list of all-ages titles.” At once hilarious, heart-warming, and ahead of their time, this cast of characters, first introduced by Jay Ward in 1959, have delighted generations of all ages, and needless to say, IDW can’t wait for fans to see their return to comics!

Top Cow’s green-haired heroine returns with new series

Readers will get a chance to start reading APHRODITE IX for free this May 4, as Top Cow debuts the re-launched Top Cow series on Free Comic Book Day.

THINK TANK writer and Top Cow President Matt Hawkins teams up with fan-favorite artist Stjepan Sejic (ARTIFACTS, RAVINE) to bring Aphrodite IX, the green-haired, memory-challenged assassin to a new generation of readers. In a dystopian future populated by warring factions of the genetically modified and the cybernetically enhanced, Aphrodite IX awakes to world where the sky is scorched, humanity as it was known is gone and two disparate groups fight for survival and dominance of the very scarce resources left on what’s left of Earth.

“Aphrodite IX has always been my favorite character at Top Cow,” said Hawkins. “She’s interesting visually, combined with a personality that’s sort of out of control of her own experiences and lost in the tangled web of her own mind. Combining my love of real futuristic tech and genetics with Stjepan Sejic’s insane visuals we’re hoping the readers enjoy the ride.”

Aphrodite IX was originally created by David Wohl and David Finch in the best-selling graphic novel published in 1996, which is being offered again as part of the relaunch in a limited edition APHRODITE RELOADED hardcover edition this summer. The hardcover features updates to the script by series co-creator and writer David Wohl.

After May’s first, free issue, APHRODITE IX will continue on a monthly schedule, with issue #2 in stores on June 12. The full-color, eye-popping issues will be $2.99.

CYBORG SUPERMAN to make NEW 52 debut

On the DC website, EIC Bob Harras teased this image of CUBORG SUPERMAN by Kenneth Rocafort.  IN the original DCU, Cyborg Superman was Hank Henshaw, originally a Reed Richards analogue who became one of the four replacement Supermen after Doomsday “killed” the original.  In the NEW 52, henshaw (non-cyborg-ified) has appeared in the pages of the all-too-brief series TEAM 7. Will this Cyborg be Henshaw? Someone new? Harras doesn’t say, but he does tease the following:

Some of you might remember the last time a Cyborg Superman showed up. Would we dare revisit such a classic storyline? Hmmm. Well, never say never, right? As I’ve been telling you, all bets are off. Everything’s on the table.

Sorry to make your head explode on a Friday, but enjoy Kenneth Rocafort’s lovely sketch in the meantime. We’ll be in the conference room discussing … oh, never mind.
Happy Friday,

Start Me Up! Joshua Black: The Hierarchy of Christ

Welcome to the first installment of our new weekly feature, Start Me Up! Every week we’re going to feature a different comic book or comic book based Kickstarter project that we find interesting. We are going to include all genres and all types of projects, from low goal Indie books to high goal books and projects from well known creators. Our purpose is to clue you in on some cool books that we think deserve your attention and could use your funding dollars. We will also review the rewards and products that we receive from successfully funded Kickstarters that we contribute to, and we encourage you to send us your own reviews as well. Remember, we are only giving our opinions on what Kickstarter projects we think look interesting, and we can’t guarantee any certain outcome or satisfaction for any project that you decide to help fund.

Con Artist Entertainment LogoOur very first featured Kickstarter project is Joshua Black: The Hierarchy of Christ, from Con Artist Entertainment. You may have heard of Con Artist Entertainment before, either through one of their several existing comic publications like Zombie Squad, Stronger Than Fiction, or Devil’s Six, or one of their bevy of pop culture and geek oriented podcasts, such as The Con Artist Podcast, Vodka and Video Games, or Untitled Nonsense. Full disclosure, they have also recently become a co-sponsor and syndicator of our very own comic podcast, Breaking the 4th Wall, but Invest Comics and Breaking the 4th Wall have nothing to do with the comic publishing side of Con Artist Entertainment.

The concept of Joshua Black seems fairly simple at first. High school student Joshua Black learns that he is the heir to the throne of Heaven. But, as we all know, with great power come great responsibility. And if your life isn’t that great to begin with, suddenly having the power of God can make things pretty darned complicated. Add in a tug of war between Heavenly and Infernal forces, and stuff can get downright wacky.
Con Artist Entertainment
I’ll admit, I’m a sucker for a good “heaven and hell messing with the affairs of mortals” story, so this is right up my alley. Joshua Black promises to be a nice dark comedy/horror that will fill the hole in my heart between episodes of Supernatural, and keep me satisfied until they make another (good) Prophecy movie. So, of you’re a fan of the Winchester brothers, or wish they’d convince Christopher Walken to give the Heavenly ranks another go, this could be the book for you.

So let’s look at the different reward tiers. This is the thing that can make or break an otherwise great Kickstarter project, and, sadly, so many creators fail miserably at this part. Luckily, the guys at Con Artist have done a fantastic job of offering you lots of good stuff at reasonable donation amounts that appeal to any comic fans budget.

Do you only have $1 to spare? They’ve got you covered! For one measly dollar, you get a thank-you tweet, a shout out on their podcast, and digital copies of issues 1 and 2. That’s two books for only a buck! You can’t beat that, I tell you.

How about an extra fiver in your wallet? For only $5, you get the tweet, the shout out, personalized desktop and mobile wallpapers, AND digital copies of issues 1-4!

For a paltry $10, you get everything above, plus a printed thank you in the collected edition, as well as digital copies of both the collected edition and issues 1-7!

For $25, which is the level I chose, you get everything above, plus a signed physical variant cover edition of issue #1, and a signed 11×17 Joshua Black print!

Fifty American dollars gets you a choice of either two different signed physical variant #1s and a personalized video message, OR two different signed physical variant #1s and a Joshua Black t-shirt, as well as all previous rewards!

The tiers go up from there, and the rewards keep getting better and better, including the chance to guest host an episode of a Con Artist podcast, sketches, actually becoming a character in a future issue of Joshua Black, or even hosting your very own podcast on the Con Artist Network for an entire month. There are lots of great rewards, so be sure you go check it out and see for yourself. The project has already reached its goal, and is nearly at the first stretch goal, with only a few days left to go. I know I’m excited to be a part of this project, and I can’t wait to get my goodies in the mail! Joshua Black: The Hierarchy of Christ promises to be a winner.

To read more about JOSHUA BLACK: The Hierarchy of Christ, or to contribute you can click HERE.

If you have any Kickstarter projects you’d like us to check out, please let us know. Email us at: You could see your project featured here next week!

From our friends at Heavy Metal! Check it out!

The World’s Greatest Illustrated Magazine Unveils The Debut Of DRAVN
In Heavy Metal Magazine #262, hitting stores now, fans will be astounded  by the full-issue saga introducing DRAVN, a world very much like our  own, but with a scandalous science-fantasy twist to history and  mythology. What if super-powered heroes and villains have always  existed, buried somewhere under our myth and folklore? And what greater  design do they ultimately serve?
Created by filmmaker Jesse  Negron (AMERICAN FIGHTER PILOT, POP & ME) and written by Negron with Dave Elliott (ATOMEKA, MONSTER MASSACRE), DRAVN features characters  designed exclusively by Hollywood concept artist Keith Thompson (DON’T  BE AFRAID OF THE DARK, PACIFIC RIM), and brought to life by artists from around the globe, including Camilla de’Errico, Sami Basri, and Stanley  Lau, to name a few.
In this visionary story aimed for the  discerning reader, once familiar names and faces will be violently  turned inside out and outside in, as a looming threat to all of creation is unraveling throughout time, with the fate of existence in the hands  of…a young teenage girl in a non-descript trailer park?
Said  lead writer Jesse Negron, “I’ve been obsessed with myth since I started  reading Joseph Campbell at UCLA and now I teach it at the university  level. Myth is humanity’s subconscious and within it lies our darkest  secrets. This was the fuel for the DRAVN myth, which begins in  prehistory with something unknown coming down to influence man. This  interaction creates a “race” of people that are more than just human.  They are the shapers of man. They are the authors of the turning points  of history. They are essentially god-man. Even though they live in  different times, they are all connected as one.”
Featuring an  iconic choice of covers by Kow Yokoyama, Kendrick Lim, Rob Prior, and  Stanley Lau, the $7.95, monster-sized issue is on sale now at finer  books and comics shops everywhere, as well as directly from Heavy Metal. Get in on the ground floor before this property explodes across  multiple mediums, multiple platforms, and multiple universes!
For more information, check out the official DRAVN website, and follow DRAVN updates on DeviantART, Facebook and Twitter.

The Uncanny For Free And More…

Book1coverwebApril 22, 2013
For immediate release!
The Uncanny is William D. Hodge´s signature series and it just got accepted by Comixology in their online program. The Uncanny is a story about imagination and the fight to keep it from going extinct. The Uncanny´s Prologue is free for all to read digitally. The Zen Brawler. The Voodoo Wildchild. The Faceless Mystery Man. The New Age Oracle. The Master of the Steel Skin Technique. The Psycho Soul. And the Gnostic spirit. They are “The Uncanny”. The Uncanny, is a mystery school of revolutionaries fighting against conformity and the genocide of the imagination. Mystery school is a university of the soul, a school for the study of the mysteries of the inner nature of man and of surrounding nature. The Uncanny Prologue

Written and Illustrated by William D. Hodge
Standard Comic
Black & White
Page Count: 24

[scrollGallery id=248]

A little girl witnesses a battle between the Uncanny and The Thought Police over the life of a stranger. Is this just the wild imagination of a
child or the beginning of the unseen war against freedom and imagination? Living shadows, fractal ego traps and steam powered consciousness. Is The Uncanny a myth or legend?

The Uncanny Prologue is free to download via Comixology (very soon) or Wyldcard Studio´s website (

According to William D. Hodge this “is a super hero book. My take on a new age of super heroes. The difference with my approach is that each of the characters have achieved their abilities through physical or mental means. It’s a team book that will deal with a lot of different subjects. It’s tone and subject are similar to The Matrix (which is a huge influence along with Grant Morrison).

William D. Hodge has completed 7 issues (1 through 6 plus a Prologue issue) in total and a collection of issues 1-3. The books were published
through a print on demand site Ka-blam. All of the issues are on sale, and they stay on sale at

The Uncanny will be presented via Comixology and Wyldcard’s site on a weekly basis, with also an instant TPB-download of #1-3 if you do not want to wait that long.

Hodge’s art is a style which truly stands out and how he explains his approach, is like this: “The way I produce my art is completely digital. I
use 3d reference for my work. I create all of the people and most of the props and backgrounds. Sometimes I purchase backgrounds/digital sets. If I need something generic, sometimes it’s easier to just purchase instead of taking the time to create it. I set up the scenes, especially focusing on creating different and interesting lighting. Once I render the scene, I then draw and ink the characters, usually each on their own layer. The backgrounds, ie buildings and things like that, I do work directly over because there’s no need to set up the perspective and I don’t have to rule a bunch of straight lines. I experiment a lot. I use a lot of brushes with different textures and I’ve created a lot. When I draw a lot of the lines, I set the brushes differently to get different effects. Like I said, I like to experiment. I believe in using any tool that will help you achieve the look you want. When I used to ink on boards I used to use sponges and toothbrushes to get textures. The reason I work this way is because I want my stuff to not look like anything else out there. I used to draw from other people’s drawings in comic books. I used to use the same poses everyone else did. Now I create my own poses. I try things from different angles.”

Welcome to the InvestComics Hot Picks for new comic releases on 4-24-13

VillainsHave you seen or heard about the contest going on around here? Win a Villains United #1 signed by writer Gail Simone (pictured to the right). All you have to do is share the link on Facebook of the Video interview from Orlando’s MegaCon 2013 and tag InvestComics. Once you do that, you’re eligible. Quite simple isn’t it?! Here’s a direct link to the interview right HERE. Sharing is caring! And could win you something very cool!

…..And speaking of video, check out the new InvestComics Blip TV page right HERE. It’s chock full of goodness with some great interviews, Hot Picks, convention coverage, and so much more. All of the videos are from past and present. Go check it out.

This week’s InvestComics Hot Picks bunch is a light one. There is however one huge standout amongst the featherweights this week. This standout will bring some heat in the aftermarket if a certain pattern is followed. By a pattern I mean a couple of things. 1: The book MUST come out on time each and every month. 2: The hype has to be met with some riveting storyline. There are 5 variants coming out on this book. With Mark Miller and Frank Quietly attached here, the hype put forth, Jupiters Legacy (2013 Image) #1 better bring it. Yes granted the storyline has been done before, old superhero (retired), new superhero (idiots), but it doesn’t get tired if done the right way. Look for Jupiter Legacy #1 to fly off the shelf because of the hype surrounding it. And just to reiterate, this book needs to bring it’s A game to the table in order to sustain aftermarket status pricing. It also needs to be on schedule or it will fall by the wayside. A definite pick up this Wednesday however. This collector is taking the Bull approach on this one.

[scrollGallery id=246]

Right behind the standout book of the week is East of West (2013 Image) #2. The first issue was a fast sellout, just as it was predicted in InvestComics Hot Picks #262. The second issue will be no different. Buy this comic, great storytelling and fantastic creative team in Jonathan Hickman and Nick Dragotta.

With recent news of the Rachael Rising comic coming to television, look for Rachel Rising (2011 Abstract) #16 to sell out quickly this week. Have you tried to get a hold of the number one issue? Yea thought so, either nowhere to be found or aftermarket pricing out of range already. Although aftermarket pricing still may have a ways to go, so don’t hesitate if you see this comic in the $20/$30 range. Probably a great buy right now if you are able to find it at that price. I have personally seen one sold for $100 already. The $100 price tag may not be that bad of an “in”, but the same thing could be said for the Walking Dead #1 when that started exploding. It depends on your gut, and if you feel that Rachael Rising will indeed ever truly make it to the television set. So many times there are pilots or agreements and shows die before ever seeing the light of day. A $20 investment is worth the risk for this collector. Oh wait, did you happen to notice that Rachael Rising #1 was in the InvestComics Hot Picks 7-27-11? Yes indeed! Check that out by clicking right HERE.

Marvel Comics’ focus will be on Omega Flight in Avengers (2012 5th Series) #10. Omega Flight was first introduced as part of the very successful John Byrne Alpha Flight run back in the early 80’s. Look for Alpha Flight #11 (1984) for the first appearance of Omega Flight. And as a side note, InvestComics has predicted in many Hot Picks articles that Alpha Flight will someday take flight in the movie theaters, so you best already have the Uncanny X-Men first appearance of Alpha Flight.

Here are some comics that may be sitting on your shelf at your local shop that you will need to take a look at and purchase. Mighty Skullkickers (2013) #1 will don a great homage cover to Thor #337. The Walt Simonson Thor cover is one of the best comic covers of all time. Take a look at the side by side right here in the Hot Picks gallery. What do you think? Justice? I think it’s a good representation of a legendary comic. Other books to keep in your radar; Rogues (2013 Amigo Comics) #1, Last Zombie The End (2013 Antarctic Press) #1, Amalas Blade (2013 Dark Horse) #1, Unleashed (2013 Zenescope) #1, Unleashed Vampires Eternal (2013 Zenescope) #1, and Neozoic Traders Gambit (2013) #1.

That’s it for this week. Remember to sign up for the InvestComics newsletter below. You’ll become the coolest person ever. True story.

Invest wisely.

IDW Teams up with for WIZARDS & ROBOTS!

IDW Teams up with for WIZARDS & ROBOTS!

A new contest is on the horizon. It involves the comic image to the right of this text. Villains United #1 signed by Gail Simone will be won by a lucky fan. The InvestComics interview will go up and fans will have to do one thing to be eligible to win. Share the InvestComics Facebook page. That’s it! Watch out for the video interview this week.

The InvestComics Hot Picks involve ten number one issues and a zero issue. Wow right? That’s a whole lotta loving for number one issues in one week. And the crazy part is that it doesn’t have New 52 or Marvel NOW! attached to it. Only a single issue from the big 2 involves the number one fiesta this week. Any cartoon fan of the 80’s will understand this next reference. Do you recall holding up some sort of sword or something that resembled one in the air with both hands held high in the air and uttering the words “I have the power!” Yes, welcome to the birth of a dork. If you are unaware of the reference here, I’m talking about He-Man. Every young boy from the 80’s thought they were He-Man when they uttered those words. This week though, we finally do have the power. With the releases of My Little Pony and Adventure Time doing so well these days, it’s no wonder why DC may jump back into the fray here. (That plus they probably don’t want to lose the licensing on the character, but shhh.). So how much success will He-Man and the Masters of the Universe (2013 DC) #1 have this week in the aftermarket? Not much by the standards of past performance, but one never knows in this volatile market. Maybe the He-Man frenzy starts up again this week! Maybe not! But to ensure we all have our eggs in place, we should have the first appearances in order. He-Man first appeared in a minicomic giveaway from Mattel; Masters of the Universe in 1981. Not to be confused with anything pertaining to Tiger Woods or Phil Mickelson on the final day this Sunday. She-Ra; which makes here fantastic comeback in the debut ongoing series here first appeared 3 years later in another giveaway. This one named He-Man and She-Ra: Secret of the Sword #1 (1984). So YOU have the power now! You have your debuts and you have the option to pick up the new series.

Very interesting number one issues hit the shelf this week and really should not be passed up at all. Star Wars Darth Vader and the Ninth Assassin (2013) #1 from Dark Horse. In this new storyline involving the Star Wars franchise, the story is of an assassination team being formed to take out Darth Vader. The first eight fail and die (of course, it’s Darth Vader!) the man responsible for the hiring of the dead eight seeks the ninth assassin. This has awesome written all over it. Do not miss this issue, if the story lives up to the plot it’s going to fly off the new release shelf. Buy this.

The second interesting numero uno to definitely check out this week is Jirni (2013 Aspen) #1. The writer on this one is bad ass J.T. Krul. Jirni looks to have her assets in order on the covers, but It’s J.T. Krul’s job to make it a point it’s not all about that. Granted, if this were the 90’s Jirni would probably be a hot book for a 6 months and then see an end rather quick, but this is the day and age where you better have substance to justify the means or you’ll fail much quicker. It’s not about the assets anymore. J.T. Krul is a bad ass, he’ll probably bring it and Jirni will be well on her way, assets and all.

Here are some other number one issues not to pass up this week. Bodie Troll (2013) #1, Miniature Jesus (2013 Image) #1, House of Gold and Bones (2013 Dark Horse) #1, Victorian Secret Agents (2013 Antarctic Press) #1, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Villains Micro-Series (2013) #1, Danger Girl Trinity (2013 IDW) #1, Dark Shadows Year One (2013 Dynamite) #1, and one number zero issue Witchblade Day of the Outlaw (2013) #0.

Marvel Comics is at it again with their hyperbole. In Age of Ultron (2013 Marvel) #6, Wolverine is said to make one of the most ‘controversial decisions’ in Marvel History. Okay so that’s 74 years’ worth of Marvel Comics and THIS is going to happen? Hmmm……

Ultimate Wolverine (2013) #3 presents readers with the mother of Wolverine’s son. Ready for this? Project: Mothervine. No really, I didn’t make that up.

Valiant’s Harbinger Wars will start up in their Bloodshot title. Be sure to pick up Bloodshot (2012 3rd Series) #10.

And finally to round out this week we have some loving going on with the X-Men again. The cover to the new Astonishing X-Men (2004- 3rd Series) #61 has Wolverine about to lock lips once again. There have been a slew of these romantic X-Men covers for many years and InvestComics Hot Picks on 10-3-12 covered this. Check out the X-Men Romantic covers article right HERE.

That’s it for this week. Be sure to sign up to the InvestComics Newsletter below. You’ll become cooler instantly. True story.

Gil Gerard & Jeff Kaufman – MegaCon 2013

From Orlando’s MegaCon 2013. Sebastian has a sit down with Actor Gil Gerard (Buck Rogers) and star of his own comic book: The Con. Then Jeff Kaufman (Big City Comics Studio) joins the mix as well…..Hilarity ensues!! Be sure to check out Big City Comics Studio at!

Gil Gerard The Con

Carrie Kelley – Checklist

Carrie Kelley is being introduced in this month’s issue of Batman and Robin.  While DC has little to say about the direction of the character, fans and collectors should look for these books to see market gains. Even if she doesn’t end up as Robin her introduction into New 52 continuity has generated more positive interest in a replacement for Damian Wayne than Harper Row or even Stephanie Brown.  Whatever her Role is it’s encouraging that she is going to be included in arguably the best Batman title currently running.

The Dark Knight 2 ( First appearance Carrie Kelley/Robin/Catgirl )

This one is a bit obvious but is always tough to find cheap and in high grade.  It will forever be included in comics canon and should be placed in that part of your collection that you just cannot seem to part with.

Click on the RED links or the comic cover to buy/bid from All sellers on Ebay.

Mazing Man 12

This oddball series concluded with a pretty bad ass  cover featuring Carrie Kelley.  It’s quite rare these days and it’s a last issue so the print run is low.

The Comics Journal 101

Anyone remember the Comics Journal?  This series is a must read for both comic scholars and collectors.  This issue’s white cover features Carrie Kelley as robin and an interview with Frank Miller, making it a rare treat.  I doubt t any would make the 9.8 grade but it’s gem no matter what condition you may find it in.

Click on the RED links or the comic cover to buy/bid from All sellers on Ebay.

Batman: Brave and the Bold 13

Kids comics can be very difficult to track down depending on where you live.  This one is no exception and feature an all Robin cover by Rick Burchett!

Batman and Robin Adventures 6

Here is another example of a Carrie Kelley kid’s comic that is going to be tough to acquire,  especially in NM.  These comics tend to be handled more making them that much more collectible.

…Each and every week the IC Hot Picks brings the fan an almost certainty. A book that will breakout or be on the verge of a major or sometimes minor uptick in the aftermarket. Whether it’s a Bear market (sell) or a Bull market (buy), InvestComics has your back. Hopefully many of you heed this professional advice and pick up the recommended comics at your local shop. Yes the digital age is nice, but your local comic shops are the reason we all love comics. Support your shops fans, it’s important. There is room for everyone on this ship.

So what certainty does the InvestComics Hot Picks have this week you may ask? How about Invincible? If by some strange non-apparent reason you have been living under a rock for the past 10 years or so, Invincible is essentially the modern day Peter Parker. You talk about Xbreakout potential? This character; Mark Grayson is it. With that said, the release of Invincible Universe (2013) #1 this week will prove once again that this Robert Kirkman character is to reign supreme. How much longer before we see Robert’s character on the big screen? Television? Not so much. Invincible would not bode well on the tube. On the big screen is where he belongs and WHEN he does, look out. Yes, look out for Tech Jacket #1 (2002) for his first appearance to explode in the aftermarket when Grayson finds his way to the movie theater.

On a much smaller scale this week fans will see X (2013 Dark Horse) #0 sitting on the new release shelf. Although Killer X from Dark Horse is not as well-known as Invincible, the character stands to be a bad ass if he catches on. His first appearance was in Dark Horse Comics #8 (1993). In 1994 X appeared in his own self-titled book which lasted only 25 issues. The number one issue featured Rick Leonardi on pencils and Jimmy Palmiotti on inks. Don’t let this comic slip through your hands this week; Dark Horse’s version of Batman is here.

InvestComics told you about sex. No not the birds and the bees, but Sex #1 from Image Comics. Was it the lure of the title that made the first comic sellout so quickly that it’s now going to a third printing? Well all indicators’ point to this NOT being the case. Crappy stories in today’s market do not go back to the printer that often. The 90’s maybe, that’s a different story. In today’s market, fans and collectors are much wiser; they’re not going to be fooled with the prism/die-cut cover anymore. It’s about substance, about what is in the middle of your ears. Any of the hype issues; death or the president on the cover will eventually wane. So are you in the mood? Feeling frisky? Don’t miss out on more sex with Sex (2013 Image) #2 out this week. Remember, the story must sustain here to remain a hot book. No reason not to think that will not happen though.

Avenging Spider-Man (2011) #19 has its attention on the Sleepwalker character. The appearance of this hero will not boaster sales at all for the Avenging Spidey title, but it will add to an interesting story. We hope. If one feels so inclined to look for Sleep’s first appearance; one can find it in the 25 cent box at your local shop or comic convention. Look for Sleepwalker #1 (1991). Sweet dreams!

With the Iron Man 3 movie hype fast approaching, Marvel brings us Secret Avengers (2013 Marvel) 2nd Series #3. Why is this relevant to the new movie? Why it’s the “deadly new secret” of the New Iron Patriot. Yippee! Iron Patriot first appeared in Dark Avengers #1 (2009). And you already own that book…..right?

Rounding out the InvestComics Hot Picks this week are DC Batman Lil Gotham (2013) #1, Colonized (2013 IDW) #1, Kiss Solo (2013 IDW) #1,andG.I. Joe Cobra Files (2013 IDW) #1.

Check out the 11 Hot Covers this week below.

$1 editions of six Image Comics first issues

Image Comics has announced the release of six new “Image Firsts” editions, printings of popular series’ first issues that only cost $1.00, to land in stores on May 1 just in time to coincide with Free Comic Book Day. Wiebe and Tyler Jenkins, and SUPER DINOSAUR #1 by Robert Kirkman and Jason Howard.

In GREAT PACIFIC, which first hit shelves in November 2012, a wealthy young Texan takes on an unlikely frontier — a floating island of garbage in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. MIND THE GAP is a supernatural mystery that debuted in May 2012, following the ensuing events after Elle Peterssen, a beautiful and rich young woman, is attacked in the subway and left for dead. MORNING GLORIES, set in the elite boarding school Morning Glories Academy, has been a cult favorite since 2010. A complex and ever-unfolding mystery, MORNING GLORIES pits over-achieving teenagers against a baffling and dangerous curriculum — and against each other. Its fourth volume, TRUANTS, collecting issues #20-24, will be in stores on April 24. Image Firsts edition Diamond code: FEB138578

PETER PANZERFAUST, a re-imagining of the classic Peter Pan tale set in World War II France, has been steadily gaining popularity since its first issue landed in stores in February 2012. Its tenth issue was released in March and PETER PANZERFAUST VOLUME TWO: HOOKED!, collecting issues #6-10 will be in stores on May 15. Image Firsts edition Diamond code: FEB138579

SUPER DINOSAUR is an all-ages adventure story written by the creator of THE WALKING DEAD. Young Derek Dynamo and his best friend, who happens to be a Tyrannosaurus Rex with super-cool robotic enhancements, take on Earth’s — and Inner-Earth’s — baddest baddies. Its third trade paperback, collecting issues #12-17, was in stores in February and issue #20 will be in stores on April 24. Image Firsts edition Diamond code: FEB138580

The new Image Firsts issues will be in stores on May 1, joining thirty-one other Image Firsts editions, including some of Image’s most popular titles like THE WALKING DEAD, SAGA, FATALE, THE MANHATTAN PROJECTS, and INVINCIBLE. All are available for order now!

Shinick & Segovia Put A Superior Spin On A Deadly Classic

New York, NY—April 3rd , 2012— This July, the red-hot creative team of writer Kevin Shinick(Avenging Spider-Man, Robot Chicken) and Stephen Segovia (X-treme X-Men, Thor) unleash a supercharged new beast into the world ofSuperior Spider-Man with Superior Carnage #1! This five issue limited series, launching duringSuperior Spider-Month, gives fans a whole new look into the world of Superior Spider-Man – great for new and lapsed readers alike!

The homicidal villain, Carnage, is deteriorating in the confines of his asylum—but his fellow inmates are not giving up just yet! Watch as their Frankenstein-style experiment unfolds for better or for worse. Can they restore the deadliest of the symbiotes to its former glory, or better yet, do they have what it takes to build a more dastardly, more sinister, moresuperior Carnage?

“This is a Carnage story that will send shivers down the backs of anyone who reads it,” explained Sana Amanat, Editor, Marvel Entertainment. “What Kevin and Stephen have planned for the character is unlike any Carnage story that’s come before it, and surely will be one that will have fans demanding more of when it’s all said and done. Want to know why people love Carnage so much? Jump on here.”

But with a catatonic Kasady, who will emerge? The Beast or the Man?

“I’m really excited to be working onSuperior Carnage. It’s very rare that you can say the words “Like you’ve never seen him before!” and truly mean it,” explains Shinick. “But Stephen and I have been working on some great designs for what happens when the Wizard attempts to turn Carnage into an agent of evil the way the Avengers converted Venom for good! Plus now that Cletus Kasady has essentially been lobotomized, readers (and the Wizard) are going to encounter a monster very different from what they were expecting.”

This July, Shinickand Segovia restore life and grotesque brutality to one of Spider-Man’s greatest threats inSuperior Carnage #1!

The highly anticipated series will feature interiors by artist Elena Casagrande (HULK, HACK/SLASH).

Super-powered people are inexplicably rising from the streets and there’s a big problem: Too many supervillains, not enough superheroes. Heroes are dying, and cops are dying twofold. Humanity is under-powered and good people are suffering untold tragedies trying to stem the flow. Beat cop Leo Winters is one of those struggling to make a difference. And the answer just might come in the form of two lowlifes with a dark secret. SUICIDE RISK is a high octane, mind-bending series created by one of the industry’s greatest storytellers.

“SUICIDE RISK is  a story set against the backdrop of the world’s first ever superpower activations – a fast-spreading trend with a single moving source and a million unintended consequences,” explained Mike Carey. “When cop Leo Winters goes looking for a man and a woman who are literally selling superpowers on the street, he triggers a series of events which will change his life and the lives of those he loves forever – and potentially, end the world.  What I love about writing this book (I mean, besides working with Elena) is that it’s outside of any existing continuity.  We can make our own rules and then play out the consequences all the way.”

This all new ongoing, launching duringSuperior Spider-Month, gives fans a whole new look into the world of Superior Spider-Man,  great for lapsed and new readers alike!

With superior power comes superior responsibility…and superior villains!  Boomerang, Shocker, Speed Demon, the Beetle, and Overdrive take a cue from the Superior Spider-Man and get upgraded for a new era of evil – and the score of a lifetime! It’s a tale of suspense that’ll turn the Marvel Universe upside down – as only THE SUPERIOR FOES OF SPIDER-MAN can!

“The beauty of the Spider-Man world has always been that for all the web-slinging action and adventure, Peter Parker lives in the world outside your window and his villains reflect that,” explains Tom Brennan, editor, Marvel Entertainment. “The new world ofSuperior Spider-Man demands a look at the lives, lies, schemes and dreams of his villains.  Spider-Man’s evolved – will his villains as well?”

Following the embarrassing beating fromSuperior Spider-Man #1, can Boomerang and crew rebound to prove once and for all they can make it in the big leagues?

“This is a book about the working class guys; these are not the Kingpins or Green Goblins or Doc Ocks of the world,” explains Spencer in an interview with “These are the small-time crooks looking for a quick score so they can pay their alimony and get the loan shark off their back. A lot of the book is from Boomerang’s perspective, and he’s very much aware of that—and he sees this new Sinister Six he’s formed as one last big shot at real money and real power. He’s got a lot riding on this.”

This July, Spencer and Lieber tangle with the Spider-Verse’s newly-infamous villains inThe Superior Foes of Superior Spider-Man #1!

Sable, Salgood kickstart DRACULA: SON OF THE DRAGON

Mark Sable and Salgood Sam are bringing their latest project, DRACULA: SON OF THE DRAGON to kickstarter. They sent the following  information. Check it out, won’t you?
April  1st, 2013
The most exciting  new independent comic is not coming from Marvel, DC or even Image.  Instead, two creators with works in print  from nearly every publisher have decided to self-publish and are seeking fans  help to do it.  DRACULA: SON OF THE  DRAGON is a new Kickstarter from two high-profile indie creators.
Created by writer  Mark Sable (TWO FACE: YEAR ONE; GRAVEYARD OF EMPIRES) and artist Salgood Sam  (THEREFORE REPENT, SEA OF RED, Warren Ellis’ GHOST RIDER 2099), DRACULA: SON OF THE DRAGON  serves as a prequel to Bram Stoker’s DRACULA.   Part historical fiction, part horror fantasy, it chronicles the transformation of Vlad  Dracula from Impaler to vampire Count.
Why has Sable,  whose recent work includes Image’s GRAVEYARD OF EMPIRES and Boom! Studio’s  UNTHINKABLE – both of which have been optioned as for film production, with  Sable writing the screenplay for the former – chosen to go the Kickstarter  route?
“With comics  becoming an increasingly disposable medium, we wanted to create something  unique.   Not just a collectors item – although our print editions will be exclusive to Kickstarter backers – but an  artifact,” said Sable.  The two most  popular incentives are hand bound leather and leatherette editions, designed to  evoke the kind of tome that one might have found in Vlad The Impaler’s  time.
Sable and Salgood  also wanted to involve the readers in the process of creation.  “All backers will receive access to an  exclusive behind the scenes ‘making of” blog.   But we’re also literally offering a readers a chance to be a part of the story”, noted Salgood, who is drawing cameo appearances for select backers.
Backers can have stories created for themselves.  Sable, who  will be teaching at SVA’s new visual narrative MFA program, is offering script  evaluations. He’s also agreed to write the first chapter of a very generous  backer’s graphic novel, which Salgood will provide the cover for.  Both Sable and Salgood have created custom  pledge tiers at backers requests, and will continue to do so.  Prospective backers are only limited by their  imagination.
A little over a week into the drive, backers seem to be responding.  DRACULA: SON OF THE DRAGON has reached one third of it’s  goal.
The success of  Kickstarter projects like The Veronica Mars movie shows that Kickstarter has  some life on it.  But some worry that  corporations like Warner Brothers will crowd out more independent projects.  Others worry that many comics projects still  remain unfulfilled despite reaching their goals months ago.
Salgood Sam feels  confident that they’ll get the book in backers hands in plenty time.  “I’ve been self-publishing for a long time,  most recently with my autobiographical comic Dream Life.” Serialized in his quarterly  REVOLVER anthology after a successful Indiegogo fundraiser, it has consistently  been on time.  Salgood points out they’ve  been “conservative” in what they’ve asked for and how much time they’ve asked  for completion and delivery.
The goal of the  Kickstarter is to fund the creation of the first of four DRACULA: SON OF THE  DRAGON graphic novels, the first of which will be available in 2014.  But 10-15 page  chapters will be released through Salgood Sam’s revolver, available digitally or  in print as early as July of 2013.
Is there room for  another vampire comic?  “I was asked the  same question about zombies with GRAVEYARD OF EMPIRES”, Sable said, referring to  his sold out Image mini-series about Marines and Taliban teaming up to take down  zombies in Afghanistan.  “They are both  incredibly powerful metaphors, much like superheroes.  In GRAVEYARD, the zombies were representative  of the unstoppable forces of an unseen insurgency.”
In DRACULA: SON  OF THE DRAGON, Sable and Salgood mine vampirism as a way of extending life, an  addictive drug and an ancient weapon of mass destruction, spreading a vicious  plague.  Just as GRAVEYARD was known for  extensive research and edgy political relevance, so is DRACULA: “It may be set  over 500 years in the past, but SON OF THE DRAGON deals with a misguided war  against Islam, with terror used as a weapon on both sides.”  Sable compares it to 300 and FROM HELL in  terms of historical fiction.
But there’s still  plenty of room for the fantastic.  “Bram  Stoker was very vague about how Dracula became a vampire,” Sable points out, but  adds “there are clues.” One such clue is The Scholomance, which Sable describes  as a legendary school of dark magic, a kind of “Evil Hogwarts”.  Sable is surprised no one has picked up  Stoker’s hints, but is thrilled to have the chance to offer a unique take on  Dracula that’s faithful to both history and the novel.
The Kickstarter  page for this project – a “staff pick” is located at
In addition,  Salgood Sam maintains a Facebook page at
Mark Sable has been updating his website – – daily with inspiration for the series, a preview of the  backmatter included for the book.
Both can be reached on twitter at @Marksable &  @Salgood, and press inquiries can be directed to
For those in the Los Angeles area, Mark Sable will be hosting a LIVE event in  conjunction with The Original Drink and Draw Social Club on Thursday, April  11th 2013 from 8PM onward at Casey’s Irish Pub in Downtown LA.  Artists professional and  amateur alike are welcome to drink and, well, draw their own versions of Dracula  for a chance to appear as pinups in the book alongside guest artists such as Paul Azaceta, Nathan Fox and Robbi Rodriguez (and more).  Sable will live-tweet any art created at the Drink and Draw event, and more importantly, buy as many drinks for contributing artists as he can afford.

THE ROCKETERS (and IDW) teams up with THE SPIRIT (and DC)

It’s PULP FRICTION as Icons Finally Meet This Summer!

San Diego, CA (March 31, 2013) – IDW Publishing and DC Entertainment are pleased to announce the meeting of two of comics’ greatest pulp heroes! Dave Stevens’ high-flying Cliff Secord will finally cross paths with Will Eisner’s iconic Denny Colt this summer in THE ROCKETEER/THE SPIRIT: PULP FRICTION! The four-issue series, taking off in July, will also pack quite the creative wallop, being written by multi-Eisner Award-winning scribe Mark Waid and drawn by the legendary Paul Smith!
“Not many writers have been lucky enough to write The Rocketeer or The Spirit,” said Mark Waid, “so I feel like I’ve won the lottery. This is one of the most exciting—and scariest—assignments I’ve ever undertaken. Luckily, I’ve got Paul Smith to make me look good!” “This is one of those ideas that just makes me smile,” said Editor Scott Dunbier, “I’m a long-time fan of both characters and it’s an honor to work on it. And if Mark won the lottery, I hit the Powerball, baby!” The Rocketeer/Spirit: Pulp Friction features a murder mystery and political intrigue. From the grim and gritty streets of Central City where The Spirit navigates through the urban underbelly of corruption to the sunny skies of Los Angeles where The Rocketeer soars above the Hollywood elite, these two classic characters will become enthralled in murder, mayhem, and all manner of danger—and with a healthy dose of signature humor tossed in for good measure. The Rocketeer/Spirit: Pulp Friction arrives in stores July 10th.
