IC 100 Club Pick – Nova #1 (1976) – First appearance of Nova – Click To Buy It Now

Before we hit the Hot Picks this week, we wanted to wish everyone a Happy New Year! To bring in the New Year we’re going to debut a new feature within the Hot Picks articles. It will be called “The IC 100 Club”. This new feature will post a comic book that will be click-able to buy/bid on Ebay and cost $100 (or $99). We do not own/sell the comics we post about. Every click-able comic is from any/all Ebay sellers on Ebay that have the particular comic we feature within their inventory (the same applies to all of our articles – please see our disclaimer). The idea here is to point out a comic on Ebay that is affordable and has some substance/value to it within the $100 mark. This is a trial feature and we will probably expand on this feature as time goes on. As of right now, the InvestComics Facebook page already features a random spot called “InvestComics Ebay Find”. The feature on Facebook gives fans an opportunity to check out random comics we see fit and sharing. Maybe our IC 100 Club will expand on there? Maybe we will have an IC 50 Club pick too? Maybe a featured article on InvestComics? All in good time friends!
The first IC 100 Club book is Nova #1 (1976) graded 9.0. The first appearance of Nova. Grab this for $100 with free shipping. InvestComics has written about the Nova character for years and this book is a beauty. Maybe get it pressed and bump up the grade a bit? Either way, a 9.0 for $100 is a fine purchase. It’s a “Buy It Now”, so good luck!

Four Eyes Hearts of Fire #1 will continue where Four Eyes (2010) left off. The new release will be from the original 2008 team; Writter Joe Kelly and Pencils by Max Fiumara.
Gotta love the disturbingly eerie cover to IDW’s The Eighth Seal #2 (cover at the bottom of this article). Kudos to Travel Foreman here.

Swamp Thing comics have always fared rather well for DC Comics. Many restarts/volumes lasting many years. One of which lasted 14 years. That’s quite an amazing feat to have any comic last that long. The original co-creator, legend Len Wein (writer) will be given the task of making Swamp Thing relevant in today’s crowded superhero genre. Swamp Thing #1 features Len as the writer and art from the great Kelley Jones. We think Swampy will succeed here, not only because of the tremendous talent on this book, but maybe because of the craving of something “different” within the comic book selection on the shelf from one of the “big 2”. We’re not saying there aren’t any assorted titles from DC or Marvel to choose from outside the costumed hero lure, but Swamp Thing is not your average everyday superhero comic.
A fantastic comic to possess in your collection is House of Secrets #92 (1971). Not only is this comic the first appearance of Swamp Thing, but it’s also Len Wein writing with another legend on pencils; Bernie Wrightson. What is there not to love about this comic? Seriously.

The ever so popular Injustice comic story line reaches its pinnacle. Check out Injustice Gods Among Us Year Five #1.

A-Force #1 gets a new number one issue after 6 months of it’s previous number one issue. In the July 2015 number one issue release, Singularity was introduced. She leads the team in the 2016 number one issue this coming Wednesday. Whew, got all that? The coolest thing about all of this? The ridiculously awesome N.W.A. A-Force #1 cover. Ahh, the good ol’ days!

The Vader Down crossover story concludes in Darth Vader #15.
A Deadpool variant cover for the new Doctor Strange Vol 4 #4 comic? Yep. A bit random no? Slow sales??

InvestComics spoke about Howard The Duck #3 (Vol 5) last week as the Marvel Hot Pick of the week. Read that article right HERE if you’d like. It was delayed, it comes out this week and guess what?? It’s sold out.
Two other delayed comics already touched on last week that will release THIS Wednesday; Obi-Wan and Anakin #1 and Rocket Raccoon and Groot #1.

Here is a copy and paste directly from the InvestComics Facebook page (You really really should get over and like our Facebook page. A lot of individual comic picks, contest announcements and interesting things happening over there!) from November 30th………..
“The Spider-Man/Deadpool team-up comic will put two very successful characters together in one book every month. We will most likely see a Spider-Gwen/Gwenpool team-up within these pages too. Probably a Rob Liefeld variant or two as well. With all of that cool stuff waiting in the horizon, here’s the first team-up with Spider-Man and Deadpool for mega cheap on Ebay. X-Force #4 (1991).”
Now granted there are probably enough copies of this comic to fill up Yankees Stadium, but it’s probably close to if not maybe a little more/less than say a New Mutants #98 (1991) comic. Maybe you’ve heard of that comic? And let us stress here, in no way are we comparing the first appearance of Deadpool to the first time Spidey and Deadpool appear in the same comic, but X-Force #4 is a significant issue in regards to the history of these two characters. Another comic to buy would be Amazing Spider-Man #611 (2009). This comic features the first time Deadpool appears in a Spider-Man title. It might be the better buy even though it’s 19 years after they first met up in the X-Force book! It’s the first Spidey book and it probably has a lower print run than the 1991 X-Force book. A bit astonishing actually that it took 19 years for Deadpool to make it over into a Spidey book. Crazy right?
Writer Joe Kelly and artist Ed McGuiness will absolutely kill it with the new team-up title. As we also mentioned in our Facebook post, wait until the first Gwenpool/Spider-Gwen team-up hits. The comic book internet will explode. Especially the Rob Liefeld variant or the Robbi Rodriguez variant. It’s going to be big and we predict it will eventually happen in this title. Anyway you slice it (no pun intended) Spider-Man Deadpool #1 will be sold out very soon. One last thing, that Gamestop variant (pictured at the top of this article) is an instant classic. Only one available on Ebay right now.Probably many more to come, sit tight.
Staying on topic for a moment here. Did the aftermarket go out of your range regarding that first appearance of Deadpool? Fear no more! Behold True Believers Deadpool #1! A reprint of New Mutants #98. The same cover and all too. Neato! (AW). Bet there will be less copies of this comic than the original 1991 version! Not many of these appearing on Ebay at the present time, once again, sit tight. They will be coming.

Valiant Entertainment’s X-O Manowar #43 promises to be a perfect jumping on point. Where were you before this issue?? A beautiful Mike Choi variant available too.

Fans of Image Comics’ Black Magick will be introduced to a new character in Black Magick #3.
The Wytches comic series from Snyder and Jock was a hit. It still has potential to be a bigger hit given the extra interest from a studio eventually. Whether it’s a movie or television, Wytches has that feel that someday it will be bigger, much bigger. This week, Image Comics will feature a black and white pencil only from Wytches #1 in an oversized format of 11×17. This amazing format and eye candy will be called Image Giant-Sized Artists Proof Edition Wytches #1. A must get for comic collectors and fans alike.
Spawn will face his greatest adversary that he never faced before! Yep. In Spawn #259, The Satan Saga Wars begins. The title of this event pretty much sums up who Spawn will be facing off against for the very first time ever. Satan. The Todd McFarlane cover is great, as is the Erik Larsen/Todd McFarlane cover. Spawn fights Satan, this is gonna be good.

Who are the Four Sisters? Find out in All-New Wolverine #3. And that Mike Choi variant is nice.
Mr. Negative will be causing all sorts of problems for Spidey in Amazing Spider-Man #6. Did you know that Mr. Negative first appeared in Free Comic Book Day 2007 Spider-Man comic? Now you know!
Two stellar covers for the new Carnage comic this Wednesday has to be mentioned here. The eye candy from Carnage #3 features covers from Mike Deodato and Yasmine Putri. Fantastic.
Marvel goes back to the well this week with Deadpool And Cable Split Second #1. Back in 2004, it was Cable who got first billing in the monthly comic; Cable and Deadpool. That series lasted 50 issues. Times have changed and the money is with Deadpool these days, so the Merc gets first billing now. Did you know that Cable first appeared with Deadpool in New Mutants #98 (1991). Maybe you heard of that issue? Anyway, Rob Liefled had an obvious hand in creating these characters so it’s natural we would get a variant for the new title from him. Seeing that fight cover from Rob, it brought us back to our favorite fight cover; New Mutants #93 (1990). Rob had Wolverine all over Cable on that one. Fun times, fun comics.
While we’re on topic about Rob, he creates the variant cover for Howard The Duck #3 with Gwenpool on the cover. A $60 retail variant. Yikes that is a bit steep! A very very nice variant from Rob nonetheless.
Marvel (Disney) will continue to milk the Star Wars franchise. Nothing wrong with that really. Disney is in business to make money and they are producing a good product, not crap. Check out another new Star Wars comic; Obi-Wan And Anakin #1 this Wednesday. Lots of variants to choose from.
Rocket Raccoon and Groot #1 should be all kinds of a fun read. That Todd Nauck Deadpool Incentive variant is neat.

Alterna Comics will give fans a holiday special this Wednesday. A rare Special Edition graphic novel limited to only 750 copies! Yes that’s correct, The Chair novel will only have only 750 available copies! If you want a copy you best get it quick because by the end of this sentence they are most likely sold……out.

New Avengers #4 introduces a new villain.
Way back in 2007, InvestComics had a monthly magazine out. It was a local publication and it was also given away globally to Ebay winners on our Ebay page. Those mags are long gone. Why are we bringing this up? Just reminiscing. Nah, just messing. We bring this up because Hellcat #1 will be hitting the shelf this Wednesday. In the InvestComics Magazine #2 (2007) Avengers #144 (1976) was within those pages as a comic to buy. A savvy speculator could have gotten their paws on this comic back in 2007 for a mere couple of bucks. The first appearance of Hellcat was brought up more recently in InvestComics Hot Picks #310 back in early 2014, with the mention of George Perez as the artist. Once again, could have gotten a jump on something before the market took off a bit. The moral of this look back? InvestComics has and will always be here for the speculator/reader. As for Hellcat #1? The original artist of Hellcat, George Perez, he has a variant and it’s a keeper.

Fantastic Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez variant cover on Batman 66 Meets The Man From U.N.C.L.E. #1
The Dark Knight III The Master Race #2 comes out with another round of variant covers. Choose your favorite and buy it! Hopefully this story lives up to the hype at the end.
DC Comics Bombshells #7 will introduce Batgirls. They’re a new team wielding baseball bats with cool Batgirl team costumes. It looks neat. We’re sold.
It looks as though we will get a guest artist on the new story arc in Superman #47. We look forward to checking out the interior here with guest artist Howard Porter. It also looks like a new villain will be making their debut as well. Check this one out.
A new DC/Vertigo title to check out this week; Last Gang In Town #1.

We have mentioned however Henchgirl from Scout Comics recently. Henchgirl #1 (sold out), Henchgirl #2 (sold out), and now this week; Henchgirl #3. That’s sold out too.
Titan Comics have a hit on their hands. Better check out Wakfu #1. Both regular covers are sold out.
Two major story lines conclude in Valiant books on new comic day. Bloodshot vs. Bloodshot in Bloodshot Reborn #9. Valiant promises that Bloodshot will not be the same after this. Rai’s “The Orphan” will end in Rai #12 and Rai as well will not be the same. Valiant Entertainment brings it week after week. If you’re a comic reader, you need to be reading Valiant. And also from Valiant this week; Death-defying Doctor Mirage Second Lives #1.

While putting together the Hot Picks this week, we had no idea about Canton Street Press and the release of Moon Girl And the Prince #1. It goes to show that either Marvel’s Moon Girl is really hitting a note or that it’s pure coincidence that Canton Street Press is going to release this replica edition. We’re not going with the latter. It’s also sold out.
The comic world (Fantagraphics) introduces the Beastie Boys, Doug E Fresh, Ice T and KRS-One in Hip Hop Family Tree #5. Rap at its Golden Age here. Great music. Yes, showing age here, so what?
It’s been a little bit since InvestComics touched on a Red 5 Comic. Wait no more! Check out Spook #1 this Wednesday.

A great creator and all-around real cool dude, Jason Metcalf, is doing his thing. InvestComics has known Jason for many years and we are happy to see that he did the cover for Zenescope’s Aliens vs Zombies #5. If you ever have a chance at a comic show to stop and say hello to Jason, do it. His artwork is awesome and he’ll give you a great conversation.

Batman Arkham Knight Genesis #5 features an appearance by Deathstroke. Awesome cover too. Check out another bat book this week; Batman Europa #2. Batman and the Joker seek out the new character known as Trojan Man.

We love the Silk character and we love the Mark Bagley variant cover to Silk #2!
Squadron Supreme #1 debuts on new comic book day. It should be a good team book. Written by James Robinson and art from Leonard Kirk. Squadron Supreme first appeared in Avengers #85 (1971).
An interesting Marvel title this week to check out; Starbrand and Nightmask #1. Pick up the first appearances of Starbrand (new) in Avengers #7 (2013) and the first appearance of Nightmask (character) in Avengers #6 (2013) for cover price or less if you believe in these heroes to advance to greater heights in the realm of the new Marvel universe. Speculators have been put on notice.
Ultimate End #5 will be the last issue. See how it all ends. We’re loving that cover with Miles looking back. *sniff sniff*
Marvel’s new Weirdworld series will introduce a new character named Becca. We like the direction of this new series. Stay with this one. Written by Sam Humphries. Art by Mike Del Mundo. The regular “Flash/Shazam/Black Adam” Lightning bolt cover is awesome as well. Be sure to pick up Weirdworld #1 Vol. 2.

What would be better than having Amanda Connor and Jimmy Palmiotti on the monthly Harley Quinn and Starfire comics? How about a totally creative controlled NEW comic character by the awesome duo? Yes it will happen and HER name will be Super Zero. Super Zero #1 will be written by Amanda and Jimmy. Dru Dragowski (Super Zero) will become the next big female hero to enter the comic book arena. An all new Judge Dredd series from IDW comes out this week. Judge Dredd #1 Vol. 5 will have several variants available. The Archie variant is a neat one.
IDW will also start on a new Star Trek series. This has nothing to do with the Marvel title from 1996. Star Trek Starfleet Academy #1 will introduce new Star Trek characters so if you’re a Trekkie, you’ll want to get this. Speculators have been notified.

The ever popular Steam Wars sells out every single new release. This week, Steam Wars Holiday Special #1 (Antarctic Press) has sold out. Grandpa Simpsons Adventure #1 (Bongo Comics). Boom Box 2015 Mix Tape #1 (Boom Studios) will contain several stories within the comic including the debut Bad Mask, which will be a new Boom Box title. Void Of Heroes #2 (Cosmic Times) will continue its storyline that will tie into the mobile video game; Void Of Heroes. Witchfinder General #1 from Devils Due Publishing looks like a fun read.

InvestComics gave our fans a heads on on Monstress #1 back in the InvestComics Hot Picks #396 article. Here’s a recap from that article; “There are a few reasons why to love Monstress #1 from Image Comics. First and foremost, it’s written by the talented Marjorie Liu. Second, it’s drawn by X-23 artist Sana Takeda. Third, it’s a new ongoing series, and fourth, it contains 66 (yes 66) pages of comic story with no interruptions. All for a $4.99 price point. There are currently none of these comics available on Ebay right now.” So with all of that, we tell you that Monstress #2 will be out this coming Wednesday. Buy it.
The new Image comic; Symmetry #1 has the looks and the making of a possible sell out. The same can be said about Violent #1. Two Image Comics to look out for this week.

Marvel teases an appearance of Venom Hulk in the new Contest of Champions #3. Hopefully we see this within the pages and not get let down. In case you’re wondering, Venom Hulk first appeared back in 1989’s What If…? #4. The title of the story was “What If the Alien Costume Had Possessed Spider-Man?” In the story, the Alien Symbiote attacks the Hulk and alas, Venom Hulk! So that would be the first appearance.
Not only is there a possible first appearance(s) in Deadpool #3 this week, but the variant cover is a homage to X-Force #2 (1991) by Rob Liefeld. Which happens to be the second appearance of Deadpool. Anyway, the variant cover will be done by…..Rob Liefeld. Paying homage to yourself is sweet. And it’s sold out, that’s sweet too!

One of the hottest Marvel characters at the moment is Gwenpool. Marvel knows this. They know very well. What to do? What to do? Well if you’re Marvel you cash in, hence the new Gwenpool Special #1 comic this Wednesday. Tremendous eye candy from J Scott Campbell (Midtown Comics) and Robbi Rodriguez. The two covers provided by them will make comic fans take notice. If for some reason this comic possesses a key first appearance, it will be an explosive comic. If it doesn’t, it’s still going to sell out and be a good aftermarket book because it’s Gwenpool’s first solo number one comic. Gwenpool fever, catch it.

Spider-Man 2099 #4 may hold a first appearance. Check that one out. Check out Star Wars Annual #1 because it looks as though it will be the first appearance of Haarkon Dak! You know what happens when there is a first appearance in a Star Wars book right? A must get for any Star Wars fan and comic collector. A must get. Got that?

A dark cover from Valiant Entertainment this week! Ninjak #3. There are 3 different glow in the dark covers to choose from. This is most excellent. Great storytelling and a very cool glow in the dark cover! Yes, we dig it. We’ll also get a final issue Fred Hembeck variant with Unity #25. Legend Fred Hembeck on a Valiant Entertainment comic? Yep! Awesome.
451 Media Group continues to sell out almost every new release. This time it’s Humbug #1. Looks like their version of Doctor Strange.
