Star Wars The Last Jedi – DJ Most Wanted #1 – Marvel introduces a Star Wars movie character into their comic book universe. Silencer #1 – Debut of a new character/comic from John Romita Jr., Sandra Hope and Dan Abnett. Spawn #282 – The new hero, Black Mirror, will debut in her own comic for Image Comics. This will be her first FULL appearance. Swamp Thing Winter Special #1 – A new Swamp Thing story paying tribute to Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson. Writer Tom King and artist Jason Fabok lead the way with a new story in honor of two legends. An original story from Len Wein that never made it to print, makes it here with art from Kelley Jones. Loving everything about this comic, a must for any true comic fan. (UPDATE: This comic will be delayed until next week) Flash Annual #1 – DC touts this Flash comic as the “Biggest Flash story of 2018”. Joshua Middleton and Christian Duce.

The debut of a new Star Wars character comes in the form of a comic book. Most of us saw DJ in the Last Jedi movie in December, played by Benecio Del Toro. On a personal note, I walked out of the theater after the movie and spoke about how great that DJ character was. Now Star Wars The Last Jedi – DJ Most Wanted #1 arrives this Wednesday. Possible bigger things for DJ in the future, he’s a fantastic player within the Star Wars lure. This will be his first comic book appearance. Writers Ben Acker and Ben Blacker. Artist Kev Walker. As DC announces that Doomsday Clock will now go bi-monthly, Marvel’s Avengers still goes weekly for its third straight week of a 16 straight week turn. This week in Avengers #678, an Avenger dies? Let’s read and find out.

DC’s “New Age Heroes” continues this week. Damage #1, from a couple of weeks ago, was the first of many new heroes being introduced within their DC universe. These characters will not be from a separate universe, they’ll be put right in the middle of the existing time line. This is fantastic news because it gives the DCU a shot in the arm with new blood. This said, it’s quite possible some or none of these characters will catch on, but why not pick up the debut issues and check them out? Who knows, maybe one of these characters has a huge breakout on the popularity side, thus jacking up the speculative side. Safe bet is to buy all of the “New Age Heroes” as they release to cover your speculative bloodline. If nothing pops, so what? You were entertained with the words and pictures for 10 minutes of your life. Silencer #1 will be the offering this week from writer Dan Abnett and artists John Romita Jr./Sandra Hope. Anyone can check out a preview right HERE before you buy. Looks intense and we’re all in. Going back to Damage #1 a quick sec. Spawn #281 gave readers their first look at the new character Black Mirror. While we promoted it as the first “full” appearance, it turned out to be a cameo (last page). This Wednesday we get “Hulk #181”, the first full appearance in Spawn #282. The new hero, Black Mirror, will debut in her own comic for Image Comics. So, let the crazy speculation begin? Who will pay $20 for that amped-up cosmic Ghost Rider comic? Maybe lots of cash for that meaningless variant that came out last week? Put your big boy pants on guys/gals. Invest wisely. Anyone reading this old enough to remember the Hasbro toy Stretch Armstrong? That was the best toy ever. This rubbery doll type thing stretched out when you pulled on its limbs. It was technological advanced for its time. Hours of fun until the curiosity got the best of you. Had to see what was underneath that skin, stretch until it breaks! Anyway, IDW debuts a comic based on the coolest toy ever; Stretch Armstrong and the Flex Fighters #1. Here’s a great little nugget, did you know that Stretch Armstrong first appeared in a comic in the New York Comic Con giveaway back in 2011’s Unit:E. Only 1000 of these were available. Probably down to 500 after everyone lost them, threw them out, ate their lunch on it, etc. Valiant Entertainment’s hit comic Quantum & Woody hit their stride with their debut issue which included the most variant cover of all time. Check out the follow up this week; Quantum & Woody #2 with more “foil chase covers”. Writer Daniel Kibblesmith and artist Kano. Chapterhouse Comics; Fantomah #1, Ray Fawkes and Soo Lee. The Marvel solicit for X-Men: Blue Annual #1 states they will provide the team-up that fans have been demanding; Venom and X-Men Blue. Is this fake news? Could be, but Venom sells comics no matter where or why or how he gets into a particular comic. And with Cullen Bunn writing and Edgar Salazar penciling, therein is another reason for a must-read book. That isn’t fake news. Every ending has a beginning. Last week creators Amanda Conner and Jimmy Palmiotti received a sendoff farewell from InvestComics regarding their last Harley Quinn issue. They had a tremendous run to say the least. DC Comics will now hand over the reins to an amazingly talented writer; Frank Tieri. His recent comics; Pestilence, Batman Metal and Jughead The Hunger are on point. It’s been a long trip for Frank since Iron Man #31 in 2000, his earliest published work (first work?). Writer Frank Tieri will kill it in Harley Quinn #35, InvestComics suggest you pick this up and read it. Looks as though Harley is “Bat-Quinn” on the cover (Amanda Conner) too. Yes, Frank Tieri has arrived indeed! DC Comics may finally get around to the launch of their “New Age Heroes” with Damage #1. Many fans have been anticipating the release since the major announcement from DC. Delays never help a new release for any comic company, but the only good thing here for DC is that the comic is within its debut issue and not on its second issue or any thereafter. Better to get your ducks in order before the first release than to have a delay right after the first issue or anytime in the middle of a story fans are following. Fans forget very easily and lose interest very quick. So let’s give DC credit here, providing there will be no delays and give Damage #1 a look/read. Creators Robert Venditti, Danny Miki and Tony Daniel. Nightwing #37 is a fill-in issue with veteran artist legend Klaus Janson. “Superfriends” part three; Batman #39. Batman is search of happiness. No really. Since the Hulk/Wolverine mash-up was a huge success…….Marvel mashed-up Deadpool and Wolverine back in 2010, on the cover of the J. Scott Campbell Wolverine #1 variant. The aftermarket on this book is absurd. Another time Deadpool/Wolverine mashed-up was in 2015’s Wolverines #13. This week, it seems as though Marvel will be going ALL in with the mash up in Deadpool vs. Old Man Logan #4. Yes “Poolverine” has officially arrived. Have at it! The finale of Venom Inc. this week; The Amazing Spider-Man: Venom Inc. Omega #1. Comic collectors and fanboys get a nod this week from Marvel Comics’ Avengers #676 cover.

Iron Man #55 – 1973 – First appearance of Thanos & Drax Writer: Jim Starlin & Mike Friedrich Art: Jim Starlin Inker: Mike Esposito Cover Art: Jim Starlin & Joe Sinnott
PROS: Thanos is a Marvel Studios villain 11 years in the making. The studio has been planting seeds since 2008 and will have the purple giant unleash his full power in the spring of 2018 – Drax from Guardians Of The Galaxy has helped this comic along in the last couple of years – Since the debut of Thanos in 1973, the comic has steadily increased in value over the years, obviously exploding beyond speculators expectations in recent years – The steady climb throughout the years had nothing to do with Drax (PRE Guardians of the Galaxy) – A CGC 9.4 graded sold a few days ago for $1,995.95 – One of the most popular Bronze Age comics within the collectors market – Early Jim Starlin professional work – Writer/Artist Jim Starlin, essentially began the TRUE Marvel Cosmo universe with this issue – First appearances of Drax, Starfox, Blood Brothers & Mentor – A legitimate Marvel villain with strong presence on film – Drax has more staying power than Thanos (see cons) – With Disney about to finalize a deal for the rights to the Fox comic book movies, Marvel Studios may step up the game with a team-up with Thanos and Apocalypse…years from now.
CONS: According to the CGC census, there are a total of 2910 graded Iron Man #55 comics. Of that total, 829 are in near mint 9.0 and higher. Not a hard book to find in near mint condition – These totals do not reflect CBCS, as they do not have a census (yet). Which means there are probably well over 3000 of these comics graded out there. Maybe more than 900 near mint copies? – Thanos will appear in Infinity War and most likely in the next movie thereafter(?) That’s it folks. He’ll probably appear in TWO movies and Thanos is done (for now?). IF Thanos is used in more Marvel movies after these two(?), Thanos will become the modern-day Darth Vader, in which this particular con becomes a pro – Nothing is pointing in the direction that Thanos will be a main adversary within the Marvel Universe moving forward after Infinity War and after. Marvel loves to “move things along” as far as their villains go. Our speculation here is Thanos is either a one and done or a two and done – Does ONE or TWO major movie appearances warrant an (unsigned) Iron Man comic to fetch almost $2000? – Will the Drax character (help) really hold this comic at these levels? Although a character that may be around a bit longer than Thanos, the market may freeze up a bit once speculators realize Thanos is done – Marvel is rumored to really change things up after this phase is up. Possibly moving away from the cosmos – When the correction hits the market, this may take a hit due to the abundance availability of this comic and its “easy to find” near mint copies.

Avengers comic fans get spoiled for 16 straight weeks….a new release every week for four months?? Yes, that’s what Marvel is promising, as the “No Surrender” story line begins this week in Avengers #675. So Marvel will deliver an Avengers comic on a weekly basis for 16 week’s without delay? Accomplishing the consecutive streak alone will be a feat, either way, let’s roll here and get on board with this. The X-Men Gold Annual #1 will be packed with new and old. The homage cover from Alan Davis is from a cover he himself did 30 years ago for the Excalibur #1 issue. Alan Davis still has it. Creators on the X-Men Gold comic; Marc Guggenheim, Leah Williams and Alitha Martinez. A super-story involving Spider-Man and Deadpool will take place in July. Why mention something that is 5 months away you ask? Well, Spider-Man/Deadpool #26 this Wednesday is a prelude to that July event. No really. Crazy right? Great monthly comic, but why tease something that far out? Weird. Speaking of Deadpool, The Despicable Deadpool #292 is part one of “Bucket List”. The Venom Inc. story line is firing on all cylinders. Part five this week; Venom #160.

“Swan’s Song” part one; Wonder Woman #38 this Wednesday. Did you know that in 1988 “Swan Song” story appeared in Wonder Woman #15 (1988). Written by George Perez and (late) Len Wein, pencils by George Perez and cover art from George Perez. That’s gold. What does this have to do with this week’s Wonder Woman release?…..Absolutely nothing other than the title of the story, but the Perez and Wein is always, always a win no matter what. Amanda Conner and Jimmy Palmiotti end their historic run on the Harley Quinn title. Harley Quinn #34 will be their final issue. What a ride it has been. They’ve single handedly have brought Harley to a new level within the DC lure. Amazing what they have done. Justice League Of America #22 brings Queen of Fables back into the DC Universe mix. The Queen first appeared in JLA #47 (2000). This character has about 15 total appearances under her belt. That’s not too many in an eighteen-year span. Right? Suicide Squad #33 introduces a new character named Juan in “The Chosen Juan” part one.

A new Star Wars story is enough for anyone to get excited, but to have writer Jody Houser a part of it…? Yes, we eagerly await this one even more. BSG vs. BSG #1 (Dynamite Entertainment).
