Cover Gem of the Week: The Incredible Hulk #27Nic Klein
So, apparently someone thought hiding behind a tree with a rifle was enough to deal with the Hulk. That plan is going really well… if your goal was to get caught like a deer with a death wish. On this Nic Klein masterpiece, we’ve got an older man—complete with plaid shirt and grandpa-grit energy—hiding behind a tree in full-length view, rifle in hand, peeking to his left like he’s stalking a squirrel. Unlucky for him, to his right is not a squirrel. It’s the HULK, every shredded muscle and bulging vein sculpted into a green rage-god, reaching around the tree with that “gotcha” energy. The forest background is soaked in a brooding purple hue, giving the whole thing an unsettling dusk feel, like the quiet before the smash. The rifle’s aimed up but useless now. Because this isn’t a standoff. It’s a mugging in slow motion by a gamma-powered beast. Nic Klein captures the tension in a single frame—you already know how this ends. The detail in Hulk’s skin, the sheer size difference, the wilderness setting—it’s all giving thriller-horror vibes with the monster playing the misunderstood victim of yet another terrible decision. This isn’t just a cover—it’s a whole 3-act drama waiting to go sideways.
Nic Klein is a German comic book artist and painter known for his dynamic realism and visceral storytelling. Over the years, he’s carved out an acclaimed career at both Marvel and independent publishers, gaining critical attention for his work on titles like Deadpool, Thor, and Winter Soldier. His partnership with writer Donny Cates on Thor helped define a gritty, mythological edge for the character, while his runs on The Incredible Hulk showcase his ability to balance monstrous power with subtle storytelling. Nic’s painterly approach—often mixing digital and traditional techniques—lets him move effortlessly between explosive action and cinematic drama. Whether it’s a cosmic god swinging a hammer or a man about to lose a very one-sided hide-and-seek game with Hulk, Klein doesn’t just illustrate—he directs the moment. His covers are emotional beats caught in mid-snap, and this one is no different. It’s peak Nic Klein: terrifying, beautiful, and completely in control of the chaos.
