New Comic Book Day isn’t just about grabbing the latest issue off the shelf—it’s about spotting the books that might define collections, spark bidding wars, or become those “remember when” stories in the hobby years later. Every week there’s the potential for a sleeper hit, a shocking first appearance, or a storyline that reshapes an entire character’s legacy. Sometimes it’s telegraphed on the cover, sometimes it’s buried in a single panel, and sometimes it’s just the creative team’s pedigree that screams “don’t skip this.” This week’s selections are a mix of confirmed keys, tantalizing teases, and pure speculation fuel—whether you’re here for the thrill of the hunt, the art on your wall, or the bagged-and-boarded bragging rights.
The Ozzy Tribute variant comic from TidalWave comics is limited to 666 copies. There are only two copies to own here. Number one of 666 and number 666 of 666. This could be the only limited numbered comic in limited numbered variant history where the very LAST number in the run is the actual bag. True story. But good luck chasing that down somewhere. Valiant Beyond Bloodshot #1 kicks open the doors for a new era at Valiant, positioned as the “ultimate jumping-on point” for both loyalists and new readers. With a plot centered around a dangerous new drug igniting Japan’s underworld and a Bloodshot who’s more intense than ever, this debut could be the launchpad for a revitalized Valiant line. The creative team promises a cutting-edge approach, which means collectors should be watching for first appearances and long-term potential if this arc takes hold. Absolute Batman #11 digs into the origin of Bane—a story every collector knows in broad strokes but one that DC is clearly aiming to retell with new depth or potentially a fresh wrinkle. Anytime a major villain’s backstory is re-explored, there’s room for a tweak that sticks, and that tweak could be what makes this issue matter down the road. Eddie Brock Carnage #7 might be dangling a first appearance right on the cover with that strange parasite Muse is holding. Add in Carnage’s spiral into uncontrollable bloodlust, and you’ve got a storyline where morality teeters on a blade’s edge and where unexpected players could emerge—if that “thing” turns into someone, this book moves from “good” to “must have.” Miles Morales Spider-Man #36 brings the God War to its climax, with Miles facing Ares on his home turf in Brooklyn. Final battles in big arcs sometimes introduce lasting status quo changes or battle scars that stick—either physical or emotional—and this could be one of those books that collectors return to later as “the issue where…” Predator Kills the Marvel Universe #1 isn’t subtle—it’s a predator king, vibranium arsenal, all-out invasion setup that guarantees major character confrontations and possibly shocking deaths. Crossover kills rarely stick, but the carnage (pun intended) and surprise alliances are enough to make this the Spotlight comic of the week—it’s a potential collector’s gem. Supergirl #4 stirs the speculation pot before page one with a cover showing two named villains and a third shrouded in mystery. If that question mark means a first appearance, this book’s long-term value could spike. Inside, Kara explores a Midvale that’s hiding more than it lets on, all while breaking free of Superman’s oversight—potentially setting her up for bigger solo stakes. Ultimates #15 mixes martial arts legend with Marvel’s alternate line, returning to the site of the team’s “deaths” and introducing Shang-Chi into the fold—bringing with him a young insurgent whose first appearance could be the sleeper key here. Bring on the Bad Guys Red Skull #1 takes us to the WWII era for a deep dive into Johann Schmidt’s most ruthless moments, layered with a devil’s deal that could ripple into Cap’s future. The Villainous One-Shots have been peppering in first appearances and fresh takes, so skipping this one could be costly. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Shredder #1 resurrects one of comics’ most iconic villains in a revenge-driven arc. A returning Shredder, especially in a darker incarnation, is always fertile ground for new henchmen, allies, or power upgrades that get collectors talking. Giant-Size X-Men (2025) #2 closes out Kamala Khan’s confrontation with Old Man Legion in a finale that promises aftermath ripples across the X-line. The tease of a major new player in the Revelations backup alone makes this an issue to watch. Uncle Scrooge Earth’s Mightiest Duck #1 might sound playful, but Jason Aaron has already shown that Duckburg can deliver epic scope. With alien invaders threatening Earth’s treasures and Scrooge battling inside his own mind to protect his memories, this could be the most ambitious Uncle Scrooge comic ever attempted—and big swings sometimes lead to big secondary market movement. Laura Kinney Wolverine #9 marks the return of Gabby Kinney, but adds in Xarus, son of Dracula, to the mix. Family drama and supernatural foes make for fertile ground, and any upgrade to Xarus’s status could be a sleeper key moment. Spider-Man & Wolverine #4 ramps up the danger with a worldwide hunt and a brand-new villain bringing the fight directly to our duo. Any new villain in a marquee pairing like this deserves a long look from collectors. Finally, Superman The Kryptonite Spectrum #1 sees the Ice Cream Man team apply their distinct, boundary-pushing style to Superman. The introduction of four entirely new Kryptonite varieties is speculation bait in its purest form—each one has potential for future storylines, and this could be the only time they all debut in one place.
