Hot New Comics 8-20-25.
Godzilla Destroys the Marvel Universe #2, because apparently it wasn’t enough for the King of the Monsters to trash Manhattan—now he’s wearing a symbiote. That’s right, for the first time in comic history, Godzilla gets the Marvel mash-up treatment, and the regular cover shows him halfway Venomized. There are actually two covers this week featuring this bizarre but instant fan-favorite crossover concept. Inside, Earth’s Mightiest Heroes get unexpected help from the Bar With No Name’s least trustworthy patrons. Black Panther makes a vibranium-related discovery that could explain Godzilla’s rampage, but when Mr. Fantastic, Invisible Woman, and the entire Baxter Building are missing, you know things are far from under control. For collectors, the Dave Wachter Marvelized Ghost Rider-Zilla cover marks another first-time mash-up—history-making cover territory that screams speculative buy.

Escape #1, the war epic that’s part Inglourious Basterds, part Blacksad, and all Remender & Acuña. This Image Comics premiere drops readers into a painted, brutal world of anthropomorphic animals caught in the scorched remains of war. Our unlucky lead, bomber pilot Milton Shaw, wakes up in the wreckage of a city he just helped burn. He’s got less than a day before his own side drops the big one, and his only allies are a father and son who have no reason to trust him. Fully painted art, a grim survival story, and Remender’s pedigree make this a high-interest debut for collectors, especially with a first printing that could heat up fast if buzz catches.

Valiant Beyond Tales of the Shadowman #1, a fresh entry into the Valiant Universe that wants to be your ultimate jumping-on point. We’re back in New Orleans, the magic capital of the world, where a Voodoo-trained detective is forced to summon the mysterious Shadowman when a monstrous invader threatens the city. Writer AJ Ampadu and artist Sergio Monjes bring this supernatural noir to life, with the potential to pull in long-time Valiant fans and new readers alike. First appearances in Shadowman books have been known to age well for collectors, so keep an eye on any new supernatural players introduced here.

Superman Unlimited #4, where Jimmy Olsen’s latest gig at the Daily Planet’s Gotham branch lands him in the middle of a disaster—Superman has gone full monster, and his first appearance as Superman-Bat makes this an immediate key issue. Gotham’s heroes are scrambling to stop him, but Bruce Wayne’s busy in Emerald City (that can’t be good). Meanwhile, Jon Kent starts Kryptonite survival training back in Smallville. First appearance plus an unusual hybrid Superman variant? That’s an automatic “watch closely” for value spikes.

Bring on the Bad Guys Dormammu #1, because even the Dread One apparently has his limits. Part six of seven in Marvel’s villain spotlight series, this entry gives Dormammu a cross-generational battle and teases why he’d help anyone at all. The Dark Dimension looks more twisted than ever, and the mind-bending potential for cameos or unexpected alliances could make this a sleeper pickup for those banking on villain-first storytelling gaining traction.

All-New Spider-Gwen the Ghost-Spider #1, Gwen Stacy is here to stay in Earth-616, and she’s not wasting time—new costume, new life, new band, and of course, new enemies. The creative team is setting her up for a fresh era, and first issues like this tend to see demand when the character has an already established rabid fan base. Expect variants and possibly a sneaky first appearance in her rogues’ gallery.

Imperial War Black Panther #1, spinning directly out of Imperial, with T’Challa wrongly blamed for political assassinations that kick off a galactic war. Before he can even mount his defense, he’s battling World-Breaker Hulk and Amadeus Cho in deep space, while his craft heads toward certain doom. The mix of Black Panther in an off-Earth setting and Marvel’s tendency to seed major arcs in these tie-ins means collectors might get an under-the-radar first appearance here.

Black Cat #1: Felicia Hardy’s life after the Hellgate fight has her shifting from master thief to something resembling a superhero. But let’s be honest—she’s still got a side hustle. The first villain she targets? The Lizard. With G. Willow Wilson writing and Gleb Melnikov on art, this could easily become the start of a defining modern run for Black Cat. Collectors have learned that first issues of reinvention arcs, especially with a popular writer attached, can become highly sought-after if the series takes off.

Event Horizon Dark Descent #1, from IDW, dropping us into an all-new cosmic horror story in the universe of the cult-classic film. Event Horizon already has a deep cult following, and the miniseries format means limited shelf life—which could translate to high aftermarket interest if the run is small and the horror crowd shows up in force.

Marvel All-On-One #1, a 50-page splash-page-only epic where The Thing takes on the Marvel Universe. Ben Grimm returns from a space mission to find the Fantastic Four and basically everyone else against him, forcing him into all-out battle mode. This special anniversary issue is the kind of oddball, format-driven collectible that could see spikes simply because it’s so visually unique.

Justice League Red #1, a covert ops Justice League so secret even the original founders can’t know it exists. Red Tornado runs the whole thing, projecting apocalyptic futures and recruiting heroes whose IDs light up red. Saladin Ahmed and Clayton Henry bring in an all-star lineup for this espionage-tinged JL tale, which could easily give us new characters designed for the black-ops roster—ripe for first appearance hunters.

Venom Black, White & Blood #1, an anthology of Venom stories that puts the character through brutal and artistic paces. Michelinie and Scharf take Venom to the jungle against a paramilitary outfit, DeMatteis and Wachter explore father-son darkness post-Maximum Carnage, and Ryan North and Creees Lee turn the Lethal Protector into an avenger for a kid. Black, White & Blood runs have a habit of producing iconic short stories and fan-favorite panels that stick in the hobby.

Detective Comics #1100, a massive milestone issue that pulls in Tom Taylor & Mikel Janin, Greg Rucka & Alvaro Martinez Bueno, Mariko Tamaki & Amancay Nahuelpan, and Dan Watters & Bill Sienkiewicz. This is more than a Batman celebration—it’s multiple perspectives on his world, from his influence on Gotham to the unsettling similarities between his drive and the criminals he fights. Anniversary issues like this often end up as cornerstone collectibles for milestone chasers.
