Hot New Comics this Week 8-27-25.

This week’s stack of new comics arrives with more speculation fuel than your wallet probably wants to deal with. We’re looking at potential first appearances, major retellings, and more “what if this becomes important later?” moments than ever. Collectors know the drill—when you see certain names, covers, or teasers about first appearances, you don’t wait around. You grab them before the aftermarket decides you suddenly care. Let’s break down the hot books for August 27, 2025.

Spider-Verse vs. Venomverse #4 continues Marvel’s not-so-subtle reminder that collectors love first appearances—so they keep feeding them to us. Every issue so far has delivered at least one debut character, and this one is expected to keep the streak alive. For those keeping track, this series is basically a checklist of future “who’s who” cameos that could end up mattering in movies, animation, or simply your spec box. Ignore it at your own peril.

Miles Morales Spider-Man #37 already has everyone buzzing with teasers of first appearances. Whenever Marvel outright tells us “first appearances” in solicitations, it’s like dangling a steak in front of a hungry dog. Fans of Miles know that his rogues’ gallery and supporting cast are constantly evolving, and this could be one of those sleeper issues that ages very well. Collectors should always pay attention to early Miles appearances because history has shown us—Miles-related debuts tend to hold value.

Death of the Silver Surfer #3 ramps up the cosmic drama with a cover that looks like it should have a soundtrack. This isn’t just another battle in space—it’s a death march for Norrin Radd, and Marvel doesn’t put “death” in the title unless something significant is happening. Maybe it sticks, maybe it doesn’t, but that’s not the point. What matters is this issue could deliver major cosmic shakeups, and cosmic shakeups are usually tied to big firsts or unforgettable storytelling moments.

Doomed 2099 #1 gives us another trip into Marvel’s cyberpunk-flavored future. And if you’ve been paying attention, Marvel has been seeding 2099 characters back into relevancy again. This debut issue carries the weight of potential new characters, alliances, and possibly a new Sorcerer Supreme twist. Collectors should note that first issues in the 2099 line often gain cult status later, especially when Marvel decides to pull them into modern continuity.

Thor #1 signals yet another fresh start for the God of Thunder. That alone makes it worth a look. New #1s almost always bring some wrinkle—new villains, altered status quos, or maybe even a first appearance hidden in the background. Thor has been one of those characters where every relaunch has given at least something to chase, so don’t dismiss this as “just another #1.” History suggests otherwise.

Batman #163 puts the Dark Knight back into speculation crosshairs. Anytime a flagship Batman title gets up into the 160s and beyond, you know DC likes to slip in subtle firsts, new side characters, or villain tweaks. Collectors should watch for cameos, updated versions of older rogues, or even minor name-drops that could later matter.

Immortal Legend Batman #1 screams oversized storytelling and the kind of “immortal” branding that suggests DC might be carving out a new corner of mythology for Batman. Debut issues with “immortal” or “legend” in the title usually mark some sort of important tonal shift. Expect new characters tied to the supernatural, and maybe even a villain with staying power.

Bring on the Bad Guys Mephisto #1 highlights Marvel’s obsession with making their villains headline-worthy. And when it’s Mephisto, all bets are off. Every time Mephisto headlines a story, something important happens—new demonic characters, sinister artifacts, or unexpected deals with heroes. This one’s labeled as part of the “Villainous One-Shots” series, which has already delivered new characters, so speculation is high that a fresh player could debut here too.

Imperial War Planet She-Hulk #1 looks to give She-Hulk a stage unlike anything we’ve seen before. Whenever Marvel sticks “War Planet” into a title, you can expect massive-scale storytelling with room for first appearances. Space empires, alien warlords, and intergalactic councils—prime territory for debuts that later resurface. Keep an eye on this one.

Predator Black White & Blood #2 continues Marvel’s anthology of brutal predator stories in stark tones. These “Black White & Blood” series are popular because they’re self-contained stories that sometimes slip in surprising first appearances or clever crossovers. Predator is one of those franchises where anything can happen, and fans know even a one-off character could turn into something memorable.

Deadpool/Wolverine #8 keeps two of Marvel’s biggest names slashing their way through this violent buddy act. This is one of those series where the chaos itself is the selling point—but you also can’t overlook Marvel’s habit of dropping new villains or strange side characters mid-run. And considering the popularity of both characters on-screen, collectors would be smart to grab every issue for long-term speculation.
