InvestComics Comic Hot Picks 10-29-08

zenpreview1_super.jpg Trained as a master of the Om martial arts, the hired mercenary Zen comes back to the comic book world this week. Joe Casey will be on writing duties with a nice cover by Jae Lee. The 99 cent comic will be a prequel to the regular ongoing coming this December. Zen is one of those characters that could breakout quickly, so check out this week’s release and don’t forget about his very affordable first appearance back in 1987. At a mere few dollars, you could get a first appearance of the Blue guy! Not a bad deal with all of these cockroaches, um I mean Hollywood exec’s guys roaming around.

Zen goes down as the best pick of the week, but here are a few others to check out….

Spawn #185  A Spawn comic makes the Hot Picks for the first time. Good ol’ controversial Todd McFarlane is coming back to Spawn! Will this alone be enough to sustain a rightful place on the Hot Picks? How about throwing artist Whilce Portacio into the mix? Bringing back 2 of the original founders of Image comics to Spawn sounds like a good time.

Amazing Spider-Man Annual #1  The comic that finally reveals who Jackpot is! Does anyone care at this point? Some fans do, some don’t. Wouldn’t it be nice though if Marvel really pulls the rug from under us and does not make Jackpot Mary Jane? Please Marvel surprise us and let us have a ‘holy crap!’ moment this week.

X-Men First Class Giant Size Special #1  An array of artist team up to bring this special. You never know what artist might make an appearance here. finalcrisisrageofthe_greenlanterns1.jpgFinal Crisis Rage of the Red Lanterns #1  The prelude to ‘The Blackest Night. DC has now made 4 prelude’s to ‘The Blackest Night’. What is up with that? WellDC, one saving grace you have and know is that anything Green Lantern these days SELLS.

Ultimate Spider-Man #3  Marvel will guarantee that this comic here will be one of the most controversial comics spoken about this year. What could it possibly be? Pick this comic up at your local comic shop and thumb through it (without the owner yelling at you ‘hey this ain’t no library!’) and see exactly what Marvel is talking about. If it’s a biggie, buy it and hold onto it. If not, write a note to Joe Q telling him you just got yelled at because of him!

ultimatecapannual.jpgcapannual8.jpg

Ultimate Captain America Annual #1  The man mostly everyone loves to hate Jeph Loeb writes as a man mostly loved John Romita Jr. does the penciling. The cover is a beauty, but it’s a kudos swipe from the original 1986 Mike Zeck cover from Captain America Annual #8. Wolverine is in the spot of the Black Panther. A low print run makes the Wolverine/Cap cover a great commodity. If you could get this comic at $40, get it. As far as the annual this week? With the homage to the Zeck cover, get 1986 book.

Captain America Bowen Statue  Last week it was Thor, this week Captain America gets the nod with the absolutely stunning Bowen treatment. Just like Thor last week, at a retail price tag of $300, this is well worth the money.

Hey, is it FREE comic book day again? This week a few of the comic companies are giving free comics for the Halloween holiday. Check out a few covers of the freebies. Make sure you ask you local comic shop about these!
