There are so many new speculators coming on board that every once in a while there needs to be a little reminder here on InvestComics as to how this works…..

Just want to urge any new speculators (and veterans too) here to please read the disclaimers that appear in these articles each and every week before proceeding. It’s extremely important in understanding how this weekly modern comic book speculation article works. This is mostly a modern comics speculation article that appears here each and every week. InvestComics will RARELY EVER urge anyone to hold onto a modern book for a profit. We have ALWAYS recommended to hold a Bronze, Silver and or a Golden, but a Modern comic? We want to capitalize as quickly as possible with those. Buy them, bag em’, sell em’. Sometimes this means to take a $20 profit and not a $150 one. It will happen, and that has to be acceptable to the investor. No emotional attachment, just a profit and move along. Get it on the next one. If the investor is inclined to hold onto their comic, there will most likely be a loss. Your portfolio will be in the red and it will get quite frustrating to get out of and into the black. There is absolutely nothing said just now in this paragraph that has not been addressed hundreds of times over the last 10 years InvestComics has been giving away its free speculation advice. We want fans to come here and enjoy themselves first and foremost. That’s always been the main priority. Second priority is to possibly come away with some knowledge you were not aware of when you first arrived here. Third is to possibly turn a profit on some modern books that are recommended here. And the fourth, mostly importantly here is to take that money (besides paying a bill or two – real life stuff) and reinvest in a Bronze, Silver or a Golden Age comic. That is where the true money value is within these articles for 10 years. Again, mentioned over the years here on InvestComics, nothing groundbreaking. That’s it for now on a mini update on how some of this all works.

Silk, Spider-Gwen, Ms. Marvel, She Hulk, Harley Quinn, Powergirl, Wonder Woman and the list goes on. As previously mentioned on InvestComics recently (and about 6 years ago) the female comic book character is seriously making their indelible mark as of late. That’s a fantastic thing and a long time coming too. No more in the background as a secondary character. No more eye candy for that gratuitous chest shot to sell a comic book. Although the sexy covers are still done, they have diminished a bit. The female comic character’s are in such demand for their own independence that Marvel has the A-Force #1 comic coming out to push the proverbial envelope even further. Not stating any of these moves spell for a successful campaign, but it will call for a successful marketing campaign regarding putting the female character front and center. Whether any of the attempts by either of the big two to push the strong woman as a lead will succeed depends on a simple measure. Good story telling. That’s it. Simple, but it’s the only way fans will truly pay attention to any of the movement here. Must have a compelling story. If not, it will fail. Great artwork (eye appeal) will take you so far. The artwork is the initial marketing ploy to draw the consumer eye in. Once in, there must be substance there to sustain the consumer to “stick around”. If the consumer does not connect the dots, the campaign fails. So next time you see that hot comic with “so-so” artwork going (in your opinion), realize that it’s the guts of that book (the writer) driving it home along with the artist. It’s the artist that is solidifying the writers thoughts and impacting the flow of the great story. So in essence the “team” works in tandem and a great book is born. This is all free marketing advice that most pay for in college or through other sources, but for you today….free (thanks Raf for that “free” usage line). So why all of this marketing and female character talk you ask? Well, there could be one of the hottest possible speculation comics on the planet coming out this week, so you better be on top of this one. Click this link to Darth Vader #3 and get on Ebay right away if you want to be a part of the next hot book in the aftermarket. Of course your local comic shop will probably have copies, but not for long! So best to click and buy now. The reason to seriously consider getting this comic is for a couple of reasons. The first reason is because of the introduction of a new female character named Aphra. The second is because this is the very first introduction of a any new Star Wars characters within the Marvel Universe since around 1986 when they were introducing a bunch of Droids in Star Wars Droids #2. The art and cover work features John Romita Sr. at the helm for the first five issues. That’s just way too cool isn’t it? Darth Vader #3 will probably be a big aftermarket comic because speculators will not know where Aphra will end up. Will she ever get her own title? Will she be such an in-depth character that fans will demand more? Will she be featured in one of the new Star Wars films? Maybe none of this comes to fruition. This is where most speculators get caught. In the middle. Do I sell now? Do I take a profit? What if the book goes up another $100? The simple answer, who cares? Get your profit (of your choosing) and get out. If you are so inclined to worry about getting the top dollar, buy two copies then. Stash away one and sell the other. But, by doing things like this you run a HUGE risk of having too much inventory, thus creating a negative within your portfolio over time due to the unbalance of the two sides. Too much inventory equates to loss of profit if it supersedes your sell off point of one comic. So in laments terms; If you have a Star Wars #1 variant and sold it for $250, but you have another 20 copies you spent $35 for sitting in inventory, you are actually -$450. You must now hope that the market stays hot (which it mostly does for a very short time). The numbers here are purely made up, the same goes if you buy even two variant comics at a high price or 100 or 50, etc. Sell those variants of hot modern books when you feel they are peeked. One of InvestComics’ favorite characters since the inception of the magazine/site has been Deathstroke. We recommended the first appearance of Deathstroke when it was only about $20 at one time. We love the character and as we so often say around here, Teen Titans #2 (1980) is still in buy mode. However, this week Deathstroke seems to have some daddy issues. Check out Deathstroke #6 as his badas* looking dad comes into the mix. Slade’s father first appeared in the previous Deathstroke series; Deathstroke #8 (2012).

Batman ’66 #21 will introduce “Lord Death Man”. This might be a good pick up if you like introductions.

A couple of odd number one comics coming this Wednesday to check out. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad #1 is based on the world famous Disney ride. A comic based on a Disney ride. Yes you heard that right. Some very nice variants too with this one. Click the link, check them out. And Miami Vice Remix #1 from awesome writer Joe Casey. Based on the super hot Miami Vice television series from the 80’s. Two different comics with a lot of fun attached to them probably.

The rest of the number one comics to definitely check out this week are; the confusion of Multiversity Ultra Comics #1 and what is going on with anything pertaining to Multiversity. This number one issue is “groundbreaking” we think in a way we have no way of explaining or knowing why. Extremely confusing, but worth a mention for others to weigh in and help others out! Hit 1957 #1 from Boom Studios looks like an interesting read if you like crime stories. More girl power this week with IDW’s Jem and the Holograms #1. Written by Kelly Thompson. Might be her first comic series series work. A new team based comic from Dark Horse; Pastaways #1 by fantastic creators Matt Kindt and Scott Kolins is worth a look. Bryan J. L. Glass and Michael Avon Oeming team up once again for their latest Mice Templar offering; Mice Templar Nights End #1. We Can Never Go Home #1 from Black Mask Comics looks like a good read.

Squarriors #1 showed a lot of interest with fans. Now lets see if Squarriors #2 sustains that interest with readers.

Two sold out comics this week that will amount to nothing more than a novelty item years from now Batman and Robin #40 and Justice League Dark #40, but can be profited on IF, IF, IF one can pull this off. A few things here. A few fans said a couple of weeks ago, how do you get a premier artist like recording artist Prince to sign a comic book? How can you suggest that? The book referred to was the Batgirl Purple Rain DC movie variant. Their were other movie variants also mentioned, but this was one of the few comments sent out regarding this particular book. Here’s the thing. InvestComics suggested that IF one can SOMEHOW pull this off, maybe never, but SOMEHOW pull ANY of these movie variant covers off that we suggest, then kudos to you!! It’s all based on the fun of actually trying to get this done somehow. We never said to go to your local comic convention and get Keenu Reeves to sign your Speed variant cover. We understand he is not readily available to sign a comic book, so please do take these fun suggestions and roll with it. Do not take these in the literal sense. One more thing. A sold out comic DOES NOT equate to automatic money. Walking Dead sells out each and every month, doesn’t mean anything. Too many times, fans are under the assumption that if a book sells out, it’s worth money and a flip can ensue. Not always the case. The flip happens when demand exceeds supply or when demand wants to hoard more copies. A sold out comic means nothing in the aftermarket if there is no substance. Will you pay $600 for a Star Wars #1 variant right now? Why not? It’s sold out right? Yes sold out and plenty of copies to go around. Plus more importantly, nothing of interest for the speculator to hold onto regarding that comic on the inside. A first appearance? A death? A possible movie character? A hot new artist? Writer? None of the above here. What you do have is a good read. That in itself should be good enough. It’s ultimately up to the individual (as always) to determine what sold out comic is worth pursuing and capitalizing on. Get the book on Ebay right away and take profits on moderns. That’s some of the best advice InvestComics can offer you. If you love, you will lose. This is why tradepaper backs were created. Read those, love those.

Now back to the DC movie variants this week. Get a hold of Daniel Radcliffe or Ralph Fiennes or any of the other major players in the Harry Potter movie to sign your Batman and Robin #40 book. Be sure to have that witness and get it graded. This is the only way you’ll have that one of a kind awesome comic. If you happen to run into Michael Keaton, Alec Baldwin or Genna Davis, have them sign your Justice League Dark #40 comic. Same here applies; witness/graded. Michael has been a round some shows over the years so maybe that signature is feasible? Nah! Still a hard get. But fun to try!
