BATMAN DEADPOOL #1 — Cover by Frank Quitely
Frank Quitely presents Batman and Deadpool in a face-to-face moment that feels strangely polite, awkward, and almost ceremonial — the exact opposite of the chaos you’d expect from these two sharing a cover. Both characters stand upright, perfectly balanced, and positioned squarely across from one another like two statues posing for a very confused photographer.
Batman is depicted in a classic, almost Silver Age-inspired suit: short-eared cowl, a soft fabric bodysuit, and a cape that drapes straight down with minimal flair. Quitely gives him that unmistakable stocky frame he’s known for — thick torso, squared shoulders, sturdy legs — the kind of build that suggests Batman could pick up a refrigerator without needing a warm-up set. His expression is neutral, almost stoic, yet with the faintest hint of a smirk, as if even he can’t fully believe he’s standing here doing this.

Quitely loads Deadpool’s costume with his usual detail: layered armor plates, straps, pouches, gauntlets, knee pads, weapon holsters, and the unmistakable katanas strapped to his back. Everything is rendered with a realistic sense of wear and function without becoming cluttered.
The background is a field of retro comic halftone dots fading from blue to yellow to red, giving the cover a pop-art brightness that contrasts sharply with the grittiness both characters normally live in. It’s almost as if Quitely is deliberately placing them in neutral, absurd territory — a space where neither Batman’s grim tone nor Deadpool’s chaos can fully dominate.

Nord is known for blending realism with expressive brushwork, and you see it everywhere here — the way the sky bleeds from gold to soft blue, the subtle texture in the rocks, the faint atmospheric haze that gives the whole environment depth. Wonder Woman’s hair moves with that loose, organic flow Nord often uses, giving her a grounded but heroic presence. Her posture, upright and steady, communicates conviction without needing battle poses or theatrics.
The stars radiating outward in the sky add a mythic quality — a reminder that Diana isn’t just a superhero, but a symbol. Nord uses lighting as narrative: the sun bursting behind her isn’t just illumination, it’s emphasis — highlighting her silhouette like she’s standing between the mortal world and something far larger. The Lasso of Truth glows subtly at her hip, catching just enough light to suggest purpose without demanding attention.
This is Cary Nord at his best: evocative, atmospheric, and emotionally resonant, turning a simple pose into an entire story.
