Greetings and salutations Comic Investors/readers, this is my first review so I hope I can install some faith in you; in that vein I’ll be reviewing  Valiants “FAITH” Episode 1,  FAITH BEGINS, Written by star on the rise Jody Houser (Ophan Black) with visuals provided by an amazing pair of artists Francis Portela (Green Lantern)  and Marguerite Sauvage (DC Comics Bombshells)

This is another first for me as I have never opened a Valiant comic before, but that is set to change as I was not disappointed with this little program.  The character Faith Herbert, the hero known as Zephyr started her super hero career in one of Valiants first titles Harbinger, since then she has become a fan favourite as a proud plus size heroine who has proven herself now worthy of a solo title.

Faith #1 hooks right into the action as a pair of would be Psiots escape from the facility that creates these enhanced humans, this point ties up nicely with a well crafted cliff hanger at the end.

The bulk of the first issue expertly shows Faiths new life after leaving her super hero family on the East coast, making a new life in L.A. as a fanboy website blogger. The pacing is very well done, and the writer gets us invested in Faiths character right up front,  The story uses a nice narration in the form of Faiths 1st person voice over.  It’s a nice entry point to the character for a new reader like me who had no exposure to the character ever before, and a great entry point into Valiant.  the artists do a fun little trick of contrasting the real world art style by Francis Portela with Faiths fantasies, penciled by Marguerite Sauvage, which involves a strange obsession with a Chris Hemsworth/Chris Evans highbrid celebrity fantasy.  I would have liked to have perhaps seen more of a contrast in the color for this, but it gets the job done. The story itself is a great mix of action, humour and real world slice of life that we see more often in prime time television.  This comic could easily be picked up by a television or film producer for development and would certainly be a fun contrast to such shows as Supergirl or the hard edged Jessica Jones.  I could picture an actress like Rebel Wilson bringing a character like this to life very easily.  With the market hungry for expandable IP’s as it is, and a top notch creative team like Houser, Portela and Sauvage on this one, don’t be surprised if this title turns into a big thing fast.
