Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

A new TMNT film means renewed interest in the famous mutants!  We all know what issues are rare and worth collecting but they also have appeared in many other titles, some of which are quite hard to come by:

1.  Furrlough 52

This outstanding, long running series should not be missed by fans of anthropomorphic comics.  Not only does this issue have a wonderful cover but it’s a rare appearance by Ninjara, a supporting character from the TMNT universe!

2.  New Age Comics 1

Published in 1985 this rarity features one of the earliest appearances of the foursome in color!  Flip it over and find out!

3.  Comic Buyers Guide 545

Comic Buyers 545 First TMNT

Why would an old buyer’s guide be worth anything?  In this particluar issue an ad for the Turtles appeared prior to any other known appearance and was the catalyst for the craze to come!

4. Last of the Viking Heroes 2 and 3

Awesome color covers make these forgotten issues worth pulling from the q-bin.

5.  Grimjack 26

See above.

6. Extremely Silly 1

Ben Dunn draws the TMNT!  Good luck finding it.  This issue from AP has to be one of the hardest turtle issues to locate.

7. Miami Mice 4

The turtles appear and some guy name Dave Sim contributes!

8. Flaming Carrot

If you have yet to enjoy the masterpiece that is The Flaming Carrot then I really do feel bad for you.  Issues are rare these days but are worth dipping into the no-honey money to acquire them all.

9. Turtlemania Special

There are variants for this ashcan size comic but my personal favorite is this yellow cover.  They sell for decent money on the back issue market so be prepared to pay a hefty sum if you want one in NM.

10.  Cerebus 155

Again Sim and the TMNT together just can’t go wrong.

11. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 12 ( Image, 1996 )

Here is an odd comic.  Fans of the comics are pretty adamant about keeping female turtles out of the group.  The TV show included Venus De Milo, the first female turtle and she caused outrage amongst fans.  This issue features a female turtle but it’s a spoof.  Is she Venus or something else?

12. How to Draw the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles ( Solson )

More rare comics from Solson!

13. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Other Strangeness ( Palladium )

Palladium published a plethora of TMNT related material in the 80’s and 90’s.  Most of it is very rare.

14. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Authorized Training  Manual ( Solson )

I am still waiting for an unauthorized edition!

15. Pre-Teen Dirty-Gene Kung-Fu Kangaroos 1

Once the turtles became popular others tried desperately to replicate the success.  Here is one example where the TMNT had a cameo.

Kevin Eastman and the TMNT reunite at IDW

The Original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Return to Comics New Series Launches Today
with TMNT Co-Creator Kevin Eastman
San Diego, CA (August 24, 2011)—IDW Publishing and Nickelodeon today announced that the debut issue of the first TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES comic series, featuring the beloved “Heroes in a Half Shell,” is now available in comic stores throughout North America. The TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES are back in action and ready to fight off evil once again, with an impressive creative team led by TMNT co-creator Kevin Eastman!

Starting today, IDW’s TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES offers a brand-new take on the original series, led by Eastman and co-writer Tom Waltz (Silent Hill: Past Life, Infestation: Outbreak). Phenomenal newcomer Dan Duncan will bring the Turtles to life with dynamic interior art, while Sam Kieth and Walter Simonson provide eye-catching covers for issues 1 and 2, respectively. For issues 3 through 5, Fred Hembeck will pay homage to classic covers. Eastman will also provide layouts for Duncan’s art, as well as variant covers.

This first TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES series features new and exciting storylines that maintain the “turtle power” core beloved by millions of fans. Leonardo, Donatello, Michelangelo, and Raphael reunite to bring their ninja aptitude and teenage attitude to these action-packed adventures. The first arc will tell the origin story of the Turtles and introduce a new villain, the fearsome mutant alley cat, Old Hob. Featuring a cast of familiar characters, including Master Splinter, April O’Neill, Casey Jones, and true to the spirit of the original comics created by Eastman and Peter Laird, the TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES are bigger and badder than ever, and ready to rock old and new fans alike.

In addition to this all-new series, IDW will also offer TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES: THE ULTIMATE COLLECTION. Beginning in October with volume 1, THE ULTIMATE COLLECTION offers over 300 pages of the best of the Turtles’ underground roots, including Mirage Studio’s issues 1 through 7, and the Raphael one-shot by Eastman and Laird.

IDW and Nickelodeon have a long-term commitment to revitalize the universe of TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES comics and graphic novels. It’s all part of a larger initiative to bring Turtles to a new generation of fans, starting with these new storylines that recapture the magic of the original Turtles comics and continuing in 2012, when Nickelodeon will premiere a new CG-animated version of the wildly popular Turtles franchise.

TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES #1 ($3.99, 32 pages, full color) is now available in comic stores throughout North America.

TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES: THE ULTIMATE COLLECTION, VOLUME 1 ($49.99, hardcover, 312 pages, black and white, 9” x 12”) will be available in comic and book stores throughout North America in October. ISBN 978-1-61377-007-8.
