Warren Ellis Movie News: Red, Black Summer

Vigilante Entertainment, options the rights to Ellis’s Black Summer while Red adds Helen Mirren to the cast and sets a release date.

Warren Ellis’s Black Summer, a comic book series from Avatar Press will be adapted as the debut project from Vigilante Entertainment, a brand new production company headed by a former executive from French comic book publishing company Les Humanoides Associes. Knowing screenwriter Ryne Pearson is attached to handle the adaptation.

"Summer," published by Avatar Press in 2007, centers on superhero team
the Seven Guns, a group of scientist-adventurers who modified their own
bodies for street-fighting in order to take back their West Coast city
from a corrupt police force, criminal local government and rapacious
private security forces.

Ellis has another graphic novel already in movie production, however. Red, a Wildstorm comic written by Ellis already has Bruce Willis and Morgan Freeman attached as stars, but it has just added Helen Mirren to the cast as well. The project is aiming for a November 19, 2010 release date.

The "Red" comic book miniseries focuses on Paul Moses, a retired CIA
operative that is lured back into the espionage game after he is
betrayed by the government he had dedicated his life to protect. Bruce
Willis plays Moses in the film, while actor Morgan Freeman plays the
CIA higher-up that orders the execution of Moses.
