Marvel Studios recently announced that they will focus their attention on getting a female superhero from their massive library to the big screen. This may be one daunting task considering most of the most recognizable female superheroes come from the DC side. I.e. Wonder Woman, Powergirl, Batgirl, Catwoman and Supergirl. Not saying it cannot be done, what I am saying though is that DC has a stronger lead in this department. That said, who will we get from Marvel onto the big screen? Elektra again? How about a female lead with a partner, say Cloak & Dagger? (More on them in a bit). How about a bad girl in Typhoid Mary? While the list is endless, there really is no disputing that Marvel does have the weaker choices in this department. One possible standout can be a character that will be making her mark in the Marvel Universe in ways she never has; Carol Danvers a.k.a. Ms. Marvel, a.k.a. Captain Marvel. This week in Avengers Enemy Within (2013) #1, Marvel hopes to establish Captain Marvel within the Marvel U as a mainstay. Not that she was really going anywhere, just a reinstatement as to how important they want her to be. Is this a sign of who will hit that movie theater first as the first big budget female character? Possibly. Maybe we’ll she will pop up in Guardians of the Galaxy? Who knows? So in order to get a jump on things here, collectors should be scouring the back issue bins and the internet to get a leg up here on Carol’s first appearance in Marvel Super-Heroes #13 (1968). Here’s a wonderful tip that collectors should be aware of. There are only 58 graded copies in all of the land. That’s right, 58. The top grade received is a 9.8 and only ONE sits there. How about a 9.6 you may ask, how about only FOUR sitting there? Then the 9.4’s with eleven in that spot. There is some tremendous potential here folks. Find a nice near mint copy and get them graded now! How about Carol as Ms. Marvel in Ms. Marvel #1 (1977)? Well there are 299 of these copies graded and seems a bit top heavy. 23 are graded at a 9.8 (not too bad), while there are 86 at a 9.6 (not so good). Both comics are fantastic comics to have in your collection, but the Marvel Super-Heroes #13 comic should be the main target.

Ultimate Spider-Man (2011 3rd Series) #23 will bring the all new Cloak & Dagger. If you were a comic fan in the 80’s, then you know just how hot this duo was at one time. Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man #64 (1982) was a well sought after book that commanded some nice change in the aftermarket. These days however, things have slowed down a lot for Marvel’s dynamic duo. The CGC market shows a total of 273 graded copies, 59 of which sit at the top with a 9.8. Just like Ms. Marvel #1, a lot of copies sit on the top tier. Still a great book to own, get it.

IDW’s successful relaunching of Star Wars will bring many other restarts to the mix. Dynamite Entertainment will bring Battlestar Galactica (2013 Dynamite) #1 this Wednesday with hopes to follow in Star Wars’ success. Marvel was the original publisher of BG #1 way back in 1979 with its ‘Still only 35 cent’ logo embedded on cover.

Batgirl gets tangled up with the Ventriloquist in Batgirl (2011 4th Series) #20. The Ventriloquist first appeared in Detective Comics #583 (1988).

Age of Ultron (2013 Marvel) #8 promises more changes to reverberate throughout the Marvel universe for years and years to come.

The Comic Book Creator (2013) #1 (magazine) will spotlight various interviews and happenings throughout the comic industry. This magazine will probably have a tough time getting off the ground for a several reasons. This isn’t a knock on the publisher at all, just pointing out what a tough road lies ahead here. One, most of the comic book lure will read their interviews or find news via the internet. Two, the $8.95 price tag will scare a lot of people away. Three, any news or insight from the magazine will be predated by the constant updating from various websites. Although a nice way to read an interview (by actually picking up a magazine/paper) and reading it, the $8.95 price tag may hurt sales here.

Regular Show (2013 Kaboom) #1 will sell out fast, buy, buy, buy the variants and sell, sell, sell!

The 80’s are calling again. Mr. John Byrne comes to IDW with Doomsday.1 (2013 IDW) #1. Other number one issues to check out this week are Fall of the House of Usher (2013 Dark Horse) #1, Dream Merchant (2013 Image) #1, and Dream Thief (2013 Dark Horse) #1.

That’s it for this week. Be sure to sign up to the InvestComics Newsletter on the front page of the website or below. You’ll become cooler instantly. True story.
