Some quick reminders from InvestComics coming up. Reminders on how to be a true modern speculator. InvestComics has covered this area quite a few times over the years, but a refresher course is always helpful isn’t it?!

The Spider-Gwen craze will hit its pinnacle pitch this Wednesday. Well maybe not it’s monetary/speculative peak, but the craze will be at it’s all time high. Spider-Gwen #1 will be released with a ridiculous amount of variant covers. Not Star Wars #1 ridiculous, but ridiculous enough. The variant cover chase has become a huge fad and any true speculator buying them should be doing so for one reason. To sell it. Sell it sooner rather than later. This site has been saying for years that if you are a true modern comic book speculator that you do not fall in love with your comics. Preferably your moderns. Fall in love with the ones you enjoy reading or you just dig for your own reasons, but don’t fall in love with that Edge of Spider-Verse #2 Greg Land variant 9.8 graded that recently sold for $849. There is no way in the comic God’s creation that comic will be $849 one year from now. Do you honestly think this comic has more staying power than a 7.0 Thanos first appearance? A 6.5 Black Panther first appearance? A 9.8 Deathstroke first appearance? All of these books just mentioned, in those grades are cheaper than the first appearance of Spider-Gwen on Ebay right now. Again. Do you honestly think Spider-Gwen can hold a mantle to any of these characters? The realist will say no. The fanboy……well that’s a different story. The point here really is to sell your modern books when they reach stratosphere status as EOSV #2 has done. If you bought the comic for cover price and could make $800+ on it, sell it now. You can get a bunch of first appearance Deathstroke’s with your $800. Any true speculator in their right mind will buy a raw New Teen Titans #2 NM for $120 and hold onto that book. Deathstroke has staying power and has earned the right to command that type of money. Greed and bad speculation right now is driving the 9.8 first Spider-Gwen close to $900. It’s absurd to pay that type of money on a modern book that is only a few months old. Are there some modern books that are worth spending a little bit of money on and holding onto it? Sure there are, but no one is going to just “give” you a New Mutants #98 for $50 or $100. That’s a high priced modern that has too many copies available out there. Not saying it’s not worth the asking price, but you ever see that showoff on Facebook that is displaying 8 graded/signed copies of Deadpool’s first? Yes we all have and guess what? It’s not the same person showing them off. Too accessible for such a high priced book. This spells for a bit of a collapse later on for a book like that. “Well Jay isn’t this a speculation site?” Well yes it is, but it’s also a site that will always inform you of a bad deal too. We’re not salesmen here. We tell it like it is. Be smart investors, don’t think any variant or high priced modern that sells for an absorbent amount of money today will sell for the same thing 365 days from now. I almost guarantee it won’t in most cases. Star Wars #1 variants….you think those variants will be the same price one year from now? Simply answer, no. The first rule of the InvestComics speculator 101 is not to fall in love with the modern book you bought to flip. Holding onto it too long will put you in the red. Many years of Wall Street experience has showed me how clients lose a lot of money because they hold and hold and hold and hold. I cannot stress enough to regular readers of this column (which you know already) and new readers (which will learn now), when you have a chance to make that profit. Take it. Maybe the market will go higher after you sell, but you know something? It’s not your commodity to sell anymore, you don’t own it, stop following it. Move on to something else. If the market collapses after you sell? Tell yourself “good job”and move along. Too much self rewarding will catch up with you. These are some rules to follow. Enjoy what you do. Never showboat, never look back, never look too far ahead, look to the immediate future and determine what is the right time to sell or buy.

The new Deathstroke series is kicking all sorts of as* lately. Tony Daniel continues to pull double duty as writer and artist. Deathstroke #5 will have the biggest fight the New 52 has seen. Deathstroke vs Batman with Harley Quinn caught in the middle of it. Awesome stuff here.

Fantastic Four #643 will feature the return of Sleepwalker. Seems he’s a big deal in the back issue market these days! Sleepwalker has appeared sporadically throughout the years within the Marvel Universe. At one time disappearing off the Marvel radar for 9 years without appearing in a book. Marvel didn’t deem him very important at one time. Things are about to change a little bit though. Sleepwalker last appeared in Avenging Spider-Man #19 (2013) and 3 years prior to that in 2010. So coming up in this weeks Fantastic Four #643 will be his welcome back party, although he did appear in the previous issue. However, this issue he appears on the cover. It seems Sleepwalker will play a vital role in the new Marvel Universe coming up. His first appearance is in Sleepwalker #1 (1991). His first team-up with Spidey occurred only a few issues later in Sleepwalker #5 (1991). What a fantastic Bert Blevins cover to boot!

Big changes for the Marvel Universe will begin in New Avengers #30. A prelude to the Secret Wars. A must get for fans waiting for that epic adventure to begin.

It seems we’re not quite done with Spider-Verse. Check out Amazing Spider-Man #15 to witness the repercussions of what took place in the Spider-Verse saga.

The secret origin of Teen Abomination will take place in Superior Iron Man #5. Teen Abomination first appeared 4 issues prior in Superior Iron Man #1.

Endgame part 5; Batman #39. The next to last issue of this great story line. Check out the backup story as the prisoners learn the truth about the Joker. A ridiculously unbelievable cover by Greg Capullo here.

WWE fans have a Marvel comic to look forward to this Wednesday. Well let’s correct that, UFC fans have a Marvel comic to look forward to this Wednesday. CM Punk will write a Thor story in Thor Annual #1 along with art from Rob Guillory (Chew). For those of you who don’t know, CM Punk “was”a very big WWE star (according to both of my younger boys) and I know him as a dude that is leaving WWE to fight for real in the UFC. Fun times for UFC fans! Anyway, this is CM Punks first comic book work. A backup just in case he cannot fight for real? Just kidding CM, go get em!

King Prince Valiant #1 from Dynamite Entertainment will have not one, not two, but three Rob Liefeld variants. Liefeld fans rejoice!

D4VE #1 (IDW) will feature a Fiona Staples cover. IDW comics do not usually sustain aftermarket status, but this Fiona Staples gal, she’s got skill and will be killing it for years to come. Get this interesting comic because the story looks like a good one and it’s a cool Fiona cover.

Mister_X_1984_InvestComics Mister_X_2015_InvestComicsWhen Mister X #1 came out in 1984 from Vortex Comics, it was a hot comic. Fast forward to 2015 and we get Mister X Razed #1 from Dark Horse Comics. Incidentally, the 1984 number one issue was Mr. X’s first appearance.

IDW will try a spinoff series from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles books. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Mutanimals #1 will follow an oddball cast of 5. The Mutanimals first appeared sporadically in several TMNT comics, but they did manage to get off their own series back in 1991’s Mighty Mutanimals #1 (Archie Comics). The new series will be a fun read, check it out.

Firestorm is a hot commodity on the Flash show right now. That dude is total bad as*! His back issue market is moving just a tad as Firestorm begins his popularity role once again with the fans. So with that said, Secret Origins #10 on Wednesday has Firestorm’s secret origin by Dan Jurgens! Only ONE copy of this comic available on Ebay right now. Better grab it if you want it.

They’re Not Like Us #3 from Image Comics will continue its great storytelling and good sales.

Suiciders #1 will be a fantastic Vertigo title. Check out that awesome Jock variant cover too. Only one available on Ebay right now. Click the link…

Speaking of cool variants to check out, look at the photo variant available for Orphan Black #1. Great job by IDW here. And Archie Comics makes their move into the serious superhero fray with Black Hood #1. This comic is accompanied by a few variants. Nice ones too.
