Comic Firsts: From Superhero Showdowns to Iconic Artist Debuts

Welcome to another episode of InvestComics Key Comic Thursday, Episode #18 where we delve into the memorable and sometimes mind-boggling milestones of comic book history.

Marvel Comics Presents #86 from 1991 introduces us to Cyber, adding yet another metal-clawed maniac to Wolverine’s list of problems. Yes, in the grand tradition of Wolverine’s life, the claws are real, and so are the grudges. 1976, where Superman vs Spider-Man breaks all the rules as the first official team-up between Marvel Comics and DC Comics. It’s a monumental mash-up where Spidey and Supes show us that even publishing rivalries can’t keep good heroes down. Amazing Spider-Man #298, a game changer from 1988 as Todd McFarlane takes over the artistic reins. Suddenly, Spider-Man’s webs got webbier, and his eyes got… well, let’s just say you can’t miss them. McFarlane’s touch redefined Spidey’s swing across New York City. New Avengers #10 from 2013, we meet Thane, son of Thanos. Just when you thought Thanos couldn’t get any more family-oriented, the Marvel Universe says, “Hold my Infinity Gauntlet.” 1983’s Megaton #1, marking the first published work of Erik Larsen. Before his days on Savage Dragon, Larsen was just another aspiring artist with big dreams and even bigger monsters.

Join us next week as we continue to explore the corners of the comic cosmos, from epic showdowns to the first sketches of comic legends. Whether it’s crossover clashes or the humble beginnings of now-celebrated artists, we’ve got the tales that shaped the panels.
