DC’s Diane Nelson and Neil Gaiman Nominated for 100 Most Influential People of 2010

Top executive at DC Comics, along with writer Neil Gaiman, make Time Magazine’s shortlist!

After having her current job for about twenty minutes, DC Comics Entertainment President Diane Nelson is one of 200 nominees for Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People of 2010.  Here’s what Time has to say about Nelson:

As comic books have rapidly emerged as the most bankable mainstream movie properties, a vast gulf has grown between the big-screen Marvel universe (Iron Man, Hulk) and that of DC Comics. Besides Christopher Nolan’s Batman chapters, DC has faced a drought at the multiplex. Nelson is charged with altering that course. As the head of the newly-created DC Entertainment, she’s been handed a sprawling comic book universe and tasked with adapting it for the mainstream. Millions of fans — and plenty of movie studio execs — are hoping she’s up to the task.

Also on the list of nominees is writer Neil Gaiman, though Time isn’t completely up to date on what he’s contributed to DC Comics:

Gaiman is best known for his critically acclaimed comic-book series The Sandman and his novel American Gods. In recent years he’s had multiple works adapted for the big screen, including Coraline and Stardust. Last year it was revealed that one of DC Comics’ leading protagonists would be killed — and who better than Gaiman to send Bruce Wayne off?

"Who better" indeed.  What would have happened if Grant Morrison wrote BATMAN RIP and FINAL CRISIS, rather than the two-issue WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE CAPED CRUSADER?  We may never know.

Anyway, other nominees on Time’s list include Lady Gaga, Stephen Colbert, Shah Rukh Khan, James Cameron, Conan O’Brien, and Apollo Anton Ohno.
