Happy New Year everyone! 2012 was a fantastic year, let’s make 2013 even better! And to all of you a happy, healthy, prosperous New Year. Thank you to everyone that has helped out InvestComics over the past year. Your input, advice, helping hand never went unnoticed. I appreciate each and every one of you immensely. The same appreciation goes out to the ICA (InvestComics Army). Without you guys/gals there is no IC. Thank you. To a successful 2013!

Welcome to the first Hot Picks of 2013. If you’re in a reminiscing type of mood you can check out the very first 2012 Hot Picks right HERE if you like. Don’t go right now though; we have to cover what’s coming up this week first.

Marvel begins the InvestComics Hot Picks year with some darkness in their Morbius The Living Vampire (2013 2nd Series) #1 title. As previously said here in this column (Hot Picks #247), Morbius is a cool cat (Vampire actually), but the characters sustainability is suspect. Morbius getting his on ongoing title? Really? While a superb effort will be put forth, a long term series will be extremely hard to keep up. That said, Amazing Spider-Man #101 features the first appearance of Morbius and will cost you around $380. The only REAL sustainable thing regarding this issue is named Gil Kane, unless Morbius sees some screen time in his future OR the new series becomes the next Miller Wolverine, Dark Knight, etc. You get the idea.

More darkness in the literal sense accompanies the New Avengers (2012 3rd Series) #1. The cover really gives off that mysterious, ominous feel. What will these pages hold inside that warrants that cover? We shall see…..

The only thing ringing in my ears right now are the lyrics to Metallica’s song One – “Darkness imprisoning me…….” And yet another Marvel title with darkness as the theme here; Punisher Nightmare (2013) #1. Looks like a character by the name Jake Niman endures the same tragic afternoon in his life that Frank Castle experienced. Jake is a soldier in the Special Forces as Frank was a solider Viet Nam. Anyone remember The Nam #52? That was a hot issue way back in 1991, but a hot issue is in the works with this quick 5 part miniseries because of two words; Walking Dead. The writer/producer of this show will be at the helm and putting together the hottest television show right now and a character in desperate need of some resuscitation may result in a new jumpstart in the Punisher character. Don’t be caught by surprise with this one.

No letting off the throttle with the dark theme for Marvel in Red She-Hulk (2012) #61 as the solicit reads “The Last Stand of MACHINE MAN!!!” Is this bad news for Marvel’s Inspector Gadget? Check out Machine Man’s birthing place in 2001: Space Odyssey #8 (1977). A comic wherein only two credits (inker/colorist) does not include the name Jack Kirby. Nuff said.

Spider-Man fans rejoice, last week we lost Peter Parker (not for long) and this week Ultimate Spider-Man (2011 3rd Series) #19 will introduce a new Venom!

Iron Man (2012 5th Series) #5 will debut Iron Man’s new Space armor.

And rounding out Marvel this week, the latest Marvel Previews (2013) #113 will be sporting a Guardians of the Galaxy #1 cover. If you’ve been living under a rock for the past few months and haven’t heard, there is a new Guardians movie in the works. If you haven’t already done so (what are you waiting for???) you really really should pick up Marvel Super-Heroes! Presents: Guardians of the Galaxy #18 (1969). This of course is the first team Mars Attacks Popeyedebut. Then came the self titled comic (Guardians of the Galaxy #1 – 1990) that lasted 62 issues. Then came…etc, etc….

And the award for InvestComics’ Hot Picks strangest team-up in 2013 is…..IDW with Mars Attacks Popeye (2012 IDW) #1. We’re quite sure that someone else will step up and take this award away sooner than later, but for now, congratulations IDW!

That’s it for this week, Invest wisely.
