Tamara Drewe movie

Posy Simmonds’ newspaper serial comes to the silver screen courtesy of Stephen Frears and Gemma Arterton.

Most of you won’t have heard of this comic, what with it being a tragic romance story/social satire based on Thomas Hardy’s Far From The Madding Crowd serialised in the UK Guardian newspaper, but it’s really good, and is actually my Mum’s favourite comic, so a film version could be very good.

Bleedingcool reports that Director Stephen Frears (The Queen) is working on turning the story into a film, and that it will start Gemma Arterton (Quantum Of Solace) as the main character, as well as Dominic Cooper (Mamma Mia) and Tamsin Grieg (Black Books).

Tamara Drewe is the story of a young woman who tries to re-invent herself through plastic surgery and other methods to join high society, all set in a Literary Retreat. It may not sound like much, but it’s a really interesting story, and Simmonds’ art is wonderful. And as I said, my Mum loves it, it has true crossover appeal, she bought a signed copy when she was last in a comic shop.
