Vanderbilt to Write Spider-Man 5 and Spider-Man 6

Sony Pictures has hired James Vanderbilt to write the upcoming Spider-Man 5 and Spider-Man 6, though the return of cast members and director Sam Raimi could be in doubt.

Stars Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst, and director Sam Raimi haven’t even begun filming Spider-Man 4 (it’s still being rewritten from the original script penned by, ironically, James Vanderbilt), but that hasn’t stopped Sony Pictures from hiring Vanderbilt to start work on the fifth and sixth movies in the series, slated for a May, 2011 release. It is as of yet unclear whether Raimi, Maguire, and Dunst will return to series for more sequels after Spider-Man 4, but if that is the case, Vanderbilt’s scripts will serve as a reboot.

Raimi seemed unlikely to direct the fourth movie until Guillermo del Toro got the job directing The Hobbit, which Raimi was expecting. Maguire and Dunst were signed on for only three movies in the franchise, but made a deal for the fourth picture.

Raimi was not happy with all of Vanderbilt’s story ideas in his original script for Spider-Man 4 and hired new writers to rerscript the movie. Sony and Marvel, however, must have liekd what they saw, since they are putting their faith in Vanderbilt to not only pen a possible reboot of the important franchise, but also to write the two movies at once, as they will be interconnected in plot.
