Comic collectors know the rules: when a new issue drops, it’s not just about the story—it’s about what that story could become. Is there a first appearance hiding in those pages? A death? A transformation? A stealth key? You never really know until it’s in your hands, but speculation is half the fun. This week, we’re loaded with cosmic chaos, high-concept horror, DC and Marvel milestones, and yes—even a cyberpunk epic with AI dogs. Here’s the rundown of the 13 comics you’ll want on your radar—whether it’s for the stories, the covers, the creators, or the creeping sense that something here might explode in value later.
Hot Picks for NCBD 6-4-25: Key Issues, First Appearances, and more.
Ultimate Spider-Man Incursion #1, Miles Morales just can’t catch a break. Not only does his little sister Billie swipe the multiversal key The Maker left behind, but she ends up in the Ultimate Universe. And of course, chaos follows. A new Peter Parker enters the frame. The Spot is up to his multiverse-dicing antics. Writers Deniz Camp and Cody Ziglar are ready to shake things up hard, and this issue lays the foundation for what could be a crucial chapter in the revitalized Ultimate line. First appearances, new alliances, maybe even a death? Keep this one bagged and close. Marvel Knights: The World To Come #1, the Marvel Knights are back, but not how you remember them. Joe Quesada and Christopher Priest usher in a post-T’Challa power vacuum that could realign the entire Marvel Universe. The throne of Wakanda is up for grabs, the most dangerous secrets are unsealed, and no one’s playing fair. If you loved the political and philosophical edge of early Knights books, this is your entry point. And with this much creative weight behind it, we might be seeing the birth of a new ruling force—or a new ruler entirely. Watch it closely. Imperial #1, It’s Marvel’s next big cosmic swing. The worldbuilding begins in Imperial #1 with Hulks, Black Panthers, Novas, and cosmic royalty tangled in a war that could define the next era of galactic politics. This book has event-launch written all over it. If Marvel plays this as the foundation for something bigger, early appearances in this issue might turn into keys faster than you can say “space opera.” Ghost Rider vs. Galactus #1, yes, you read that right. Johnny Blaze is now locking horns with a planet-sucking space god. Ghost Rider vs. Galactus #1 throws vengeance into the vacuum of space, and it’s as insane as it sounds. Writer J. Michael Straczynski and artist Juan Ferreyra make this cosmic brawl deeply personal. No heralds. No warning. Just judgment. When the Rider comes for the Devourer of Worlds, something’s gotta give—and it’s probably not Galactus. If there’s a twist—say, a transformation or a new cosmic Rider—this issue could become essential overnight. Hellverine #7, still one of Marvel’s most unhinged titles, Hellverine #7 gives us more HELL HULK, more death metal drama, and more government-summoned super carnage via Project Hellfire. What is the Hell Hulk really? Good question—Marvel’s playing coy, but this thing is picking up lore that could bleed into future arcs or crossovers. If a Hell Hulk origin or evolution happens here, you’ll want it. All-New Venom #7, Flash Thompson has orders to take out the new Venom—but that’s Dylan Brock, and things are personal. The decision he makes here might change both characters’ trajectories. Meanwhile, a mystery villain in the shadows seems eager to pull the trigger if Flash won’t. This issue could quietly house a major new villain’s reveal—or at least tease a future showdown that collectors should watch for. Absolute Superman #8, Now caught in a tug-of-war between the Lazarus Corp and the mysterious Omega Men, Kal-El would really just prefer to chill in Smallville. No such luck. This is the beginning of the series’ second major arc, and we may finally get more answers about these new threats. As always, keep watch for a stealth first appearance or a quiet moment that pays off later. New arcs often mean new faces and foundations. Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong 2 #1, because round one wasn’t wild enough, the rematch is on. The Justice League heads to the Legendary Earth universe to stop Amanda Waller from weaponizing Titans. That means Kong. That means Godzilla. And that means every bit of crossover madness is back on the table. Don’t underestimate this series—there’s actual heat on some of the earlier issues, and this relaunch might bring surprises in the form of hybrid monsters or universe bleed-throughs.

The Future Is ****** #1, Cyberpunk isn’t dead—it’s evolved into a 60-issue hacker war with AI, lunar dictatorships, and rogue freedom fighters. The Future Is ****** #1 launches the most ambitious indie epic in recent memory. This isn’t a one-shot. This is the start of an ongoing campaign. Writer Fred Van Lente and artist Ennio Bufi toss you into a war zone where your digital shadow might kill you before your enemies do. Corporate tyrants rule from the moon. Hackers team with sentient algorithms. If you like your comics high-concept and high-stakes, you won’t want to miss the first issue that could become a talking point once this sprawling series gains momentum—and variant heat. Be Not Afraid #1, Biblical horror isn’t new, but this hits different. A farm girl births a Nephilim, a divine abomination, and now she’s told by Heaven itself to kill her own son. Frogs boil. Crops rot. This is The Omen meets Midsommar meets The Passion of the Christ—but in comic form. Atmospheric, tense, and laced with uncomfortable dread, this first issue could quietly become a cult hit if word of mouth builds. Horror collectors and indie fans, this one is for you. ThunderCats #16, Lion-O’s return comes with a twist and a new threat: the Knights of Thundera. What sounds like a medieval cosplay troupe might actually reshape Third Earth. This begins a brand-new arc with huge potential for new lore and character introductions. Add variant covers by Jae Lee, Lucio Parrillo, and TMNT-homage specialist Ken Haeser, and you’ve got a cover collector’s dream with a healthy dose of cartoon nostalgia gone gritty. Laura Kinney: Wolverine #7, legacy #75 of Laura’s solo adventures puts her in emotional crosshairs. A betrayal involving Logan looms, and her relationship with Julian Keller (aka Hellion) is about to get stress-tested hard. You can practically smell the character development—and where there’s pain, there might be change. Major status quo shifts, character deaths, or turning points for Laura could give this one weight. DC Pride 2025 #1, the fifth anniversary of DC Pride doesn’t just mark the moment—it reinvents it. A Gotham bar with roots in queer history becomes the site of a reality-warping mystery that ensnares a wide cast of LGBTQ+ DC icons: Alan Scott, Harley Quinn, Jo Mullein, Apollo, Midnighter, and more. An oversized, one-shot story puts them all inside a strange dimension that promises everything they’ve ever wanted—at a cost, of course. With the Starheart at the narrative core, there’s legacy, emotion, and possibly a few speculative twists waiting in the wings. This could be a long-term key if a character or concept introduced here sticks.
