Cover Gem of the Week: Amazing Spider-Man #5 – Joëlle Jones
Let’s talk about this week’s Cover Gem, Amazing Spider-Man #5 by Joëlle Jones. Because nothing says “friendly neighborhood” like a mid-air heist and a web-slinging intervention under the glow of a city night. Jones delivers a cover that’s practically a masterclass in kinetic tension and visual storytelling.
Spider-Man is suspended in the air, his left arm fully extended to grip his webbing while his right arm shoots another web toward Black Cat. She’s in free fall, one hand clutching a money bag, the other reaching out to snatch the bills fluttering around her. The web is just about to ensnare her extended leg, capturing the precise moment before impact. The backdrop of the night sky, punctuated by the fire escapes of a nearby building, makes the characters pop, emphasizing the drama of the scene.
Joëlle Jones, born on February 20, 1980, in Boise, Idaho, is an Eisner-nominated comic book artist and writer. She studied oil painting at the Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland, Oregon, but left to pursue a career in comic book illustration. Early in her career, Jones worked freelance for Dark Horse Comics and Oni Press, establishing her presence in the industry with her unique artistic style. Her initial credited work was as a colorist for Harris Comics in 2004, but she soon made a name for herself with her illustrations in the anthology “Sexy Chix” published by Dark Horse Comics in 2006. This was followed by her work on “Fables” #59 for DC Comics’ Vertigo imprint.
Jones gained critical acclaim with her work on the series “Lady Killer,” co-created with writer Jamie S. Rich and published by Dark Horse Comics from 2015 to 2017. “Lady Killer” is about a 1960s housewife who moonlights as an assassin, showcasing Jones’s ability to blend narrative depth with visually striking art. This project earned her three Eisner Award nominations in 2016 for Best Limited Series, Best Penciller/Inker, and Best Cover Artist.
Beyond “Lady Killer,” Jones has contributed to various Marvel Comics titles including “Mockingbird,” “Spider-Woman,” “Scarlet Witch,” and “Ms. Marvel,” where she provided both interior art and covers. Her work with DC Comics includes illustrations for “Supergirl: Being Super” and significant contributions to “Batman” and “Catwoman,” further cementing her status as a versatile artist in the comic book world.
In recent years, Joëlle Jones has continued to diversify her portfolio, becoming a founding member of the comic book company DSTLRY in April 2023, where she works on creator-owned projects. She has also taken on roles as both writer and artist, allowing her to explore new storytelling dimensions. In January 2024, it was announced that Jones would serve as an artist for the 2024 relaunch of the “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” series by IDW, written by Jason Aaron, demonstrating her ongoing relevance and adaptability in the industry. Jones’s artwork has not only been featured in comics but has also been the basis for DC’s Cover Girls line of statues in 2017, making her the first female designer for this series. Her work continues to be celebrated for its detailed, dynamic, and expressive qualities, making her a pivotal figure in contemporary comic book art.
