After a ‘Blackest Night’, you need a ‘Brightest Day’!

The only thing that makes fans more nervous than a big comic
book event is the sequel to said event! Secret Wars Two? Anything after the
original Crisis? I rest my case. As the brilliant ‘Blackest Night’ began to
wind down we were told of the next event called ‘Brightest Day’. Worried?
Kinda.

Last week ‘Brightest Day’ # 0 hit the shelves and I think
many fans were a little worried and again rightfully so. But what I hope people
will understand is this book is more of an epilogue to ‘Blackest Night’ than
the start of something else. The issue contains 11 or so individual stories
wrapped around each other, flowing into one cohesive tale.

Here we see Hawkman and Hawkgirl reconnect and ponder their
fate. Will history keep repeating itself or will they finally have peace? After
a night of well deserved passion with Mera, Aquaman still seems to have a hard
time shaking the memories of what just happened. Heroes and villains all who
returned in the last pages of ‘Blackest Night’ are seen trying to make sense of
everything and what their roles will be in the new DCU. Many are still left
wondering why some came back and some didn’t.

The most emotional of the stories involves Firestorm. We see
both Ronny Raymond and Jason Rusch will now inhabit the body of Firestorm.
Problem is Jason blames Ronny for the death of his girlfriend.

The most intriguing story in the issue is the fate of
Deadman. After all these years he is no longer a ghost, forever wandering the world
looking for a body to inhabit. He’s now alive and apparently has resurrection
powers. With a strong writer and artist a Deadman series could be very
interesting.

Written by DC guru Geoff Johns and Peter J. Tomasi, this duo
did no wrong! The story has many things going on but they kept it coherent and
always moving. Penciller Fernando Pasarin did a beautiful job on every page.
Working with several inkers, he seemed to change his style a bit to
differentiate the different tales, but kept it all one story. This book is a
must read!

After a ‘Blackest Night’, you need a ‘Brightest Day’!
