Cover Gem of the Week: Predator Black, White, & Blood #1 – Mahmud Asrar.
In Predator: Black, White & Blood #1, Mahmud Asrar delivers a variant cover that lives up to every promise of the title’s color scheme. The image is a wash of black and white tones, with a gory punch of crimson ripping through it. We see a Predator kneel on the edge of a mountain, spine‑skull trophy in right hand, blood dripping over the precipice, the grisly remains pooled beneath him—presumed the rest of the corpse. White highlights pick out his armor plating and muscle, grey midtones give shape, while every strike of red blood feels freshly painted. His left hand, glistening with gore, is planted behind him; his intense gaze locked on the skull, like it’s the rarest prize in his hunt. Below him lies a river valley, but the focus—and horror—is entirely on this brutal tableau. It feels earned, proud, savage.
Predator: Black, White & Blood #1 variant by Mahmud Asrar ties together his seasoned skill with anatomy, shading, atmosphere, and clean horror, spotlighting one killer moment: Predator locked in trophy‑admiration, gore glistening like the moon. It embodies the series’ brutal elegance, and reminds readers that Asrar’s skill isn’t just in interior storytelling—it’s in a single image that speaks volumes.
Mahmud Anjum Asrar, born November 20, 1976 in Ankara to an Austrian mother and Pakistani father, carved his path from a Fine Arts and Graphics education at Hacettepe and Anatolian Universities straight into comics after contributing to the indie anthology Digital Webbing Presents—a gig that snagged him the co-creator and artist role on Image’s Dynamo 5 in 2007. From there, he became a mainstay across all the big publishers—Image’s Small Gods, Marvel runs on She‑Hulk: Cosmic Collision, War of Kings, All‑New All‑Different Avengers, X‑Men Red, Conan the Barbarian, Wolverine & the X‑Men, among others—and DC hits like Supergirl and Batman vs Robin. His polished style, blending solid anatomy, depth, and moody spot‑black shading, comes from a workflow that marries digital layouts (via Clip Studio Paint) with traditional HB pencils, brush pens, liners, and Rotring white ink for finishing touches. He now lives in Vienna with his wife and son, and is currently spearheading his creator‑owned title Bug Wars at Image.
This issue marks the reopening of Marvel’s celebrated Black, White & Blood anthology line, with multi‑story format featuring creators like Joe Kelly and rising artist Álvaro López tackling a young Predator prowling an Australian convict colony, and additional stories by Eliot Rahal/Brian Level and Sarah Gailey/Fran Galán. Asrar’s cover threads red, white, and black into one visceral, chilling image that captures the primal savagery of the Yautja.
