Hot Picks for NCBD. Doom’s Academy, Spider-Man’s Last Stand, and Godzilla’s Perfect Crime – This Week’s Hottest Comics.
New Comic Book Day is back, and this week’s lineup isn’t just another stack of stories—it’s a collision of high-stakes battles, universe-shifting events, and unexpected power plays. Doctor Doom has taken over the world of magic, Spider-Man is down to his last chance at survival, and Wolverine is leading a team that doesn’t believe in second chances. Meanwhile, in a galaxy far, far away, the Jedi face a fear they never saw coming, while over on planet Earth, someone has figured out how to use Godzilla as the ultimate cover for the perfect crime. It’s the kind of week where you have to wonder—who’s really in control? Doom’s new academy sets a terrifying standard for magical education, The Infinity Watch is barely hanging on after a mysterious enemy’s devastating attack, and Bucky Barnes is leading an all-out war against Doom himself. Then there’s the return of The Herculoids, a cult-favorite sci-fi team stepping back into the spotlight, and Zatanna trying to keep her life from unraveling—again. With multiple key issues, first appearances, and game-changing developments, this week’s releases have plenty to watch for. Whether you’re here for the speculation, the key moments, or just want to see how Spider-Man somehow survives this latest catastrophe, this week’s lineup has something for every collector. Let’s break down the biggest releases hitting shelves this week.

Doom Academy #1, you thought Strange Academy was chaotic before? (And remember, InvestComics called the Strange Academy in a big speculative way…..and we made readers lots of cash.) Now imagine that same magic school, but under the watchful eye of Doctor Doom. No, this isn’t a fever dream—it’s Doom Academy. The school has moved from New Orleans to Latveria, where Doom is now Sorcerer Supreme. That means iron-fisted rules, and let’s be real—this is either going to be the best thing ever or a total disaster for the students. Either way, it’s a must-watch experiment in Doom-approved education. Marvel’s “Academy” series tend to be strong speculative picks. Star Wars The High Republic – Fear of the Jedi #1 – What could possibly scare the Jedi? That’s what this issue is all about. Best-selling writer Cavan Scott brings the final arc of The High Republic, and if you’ve been following, you know things aren’t looking good for Jedi Master Keeve Trennis. The Nihil Occlusion Zone is in chaos, and with Kelnacca (The Acolyte’s Wookiee Jedi Master) joining the fight, things are bound to get even more intense. This issue also brings in characters from novels, audio dramas, and previous comics—so expect some deeper Star Wars lore packed into these pages. Marvel’s latest round of variant covers is doing something a little different—taking the classic Human Torch and mashing him up with some of the biggest names in the Marvel Universe. These covers aren’t just eye-catching, they’re also potential first-appearance collectibles if Marvel ever decides to integrate these designs into continuity. And let’s be honest—fans have a long history of making these kinds of mashups canon eventually. Two standouts this week? Daredevil #18 features a Jonboy Meyers Torch Cover that blends Daredevil with the fiery energy of the Human Torch. The result? A hellish, flame-wreathed version of Matt Murdock that looks like he just walked straight out of the underworld. Meyers’ bold, hyper-detailed style makes this one a standout, and if this version of Daredevil ever gets a storyline, you can bet this cover will be the one collectors hunt down. Then there’s The Amazing Spider-Man #68, showcasing a Luciano Vecchio Torch Cover that merges Black Cat with the Torch’s flame-based power set. The sleek and stylish design keeps Black Cat’s signature look while adding an infernal glow that makes her even more dangerous. With Black Cat’s popularity continuing to rise, this cover has real potential to heat up—literally and figuratively. Marvel’s been playing with these kinds of unique mashups for a while now, and when the designs are this good, it only takes one storyline, one tease, or one speculative push to make them must-have books. If these covers sell out, don’t be surprised—Torch mashups might just be the next big collector’s trend. And staying on topic of The Amazing Spider-Man #68, Peter Parker’s got a problem—again. The Scions of Cytorrak have wiped out all his extra lives, and now we’re looking at what might be his final death. If you’re a betting person, don’t put money on Spider-Man staying dead. But with “The 8 Deaths of Spider-Man” arc continuing, there’s still plenty of drama left before we find out what’s really going on. The Infinity Watch #2, last issue introduced a mysterious antagonist who completely humiliated The Infinity Watch. Now, we dig deeper into whether or not Phil Coulson—yes, that Phil Coulson—is actually DEATH HIMSELF. If he is, that changes everything. If not, then whoever just wrecked some of the most powerful beings in the Marvel Universe is even worse news.

Thunderbolts Doomstrike #1, Doctor Doom rules the world, and Bucky Barnes helped him do it. Now, Bucky’s got a team—Black Widow, Songbird, and others—to bring it all crashing down. Of course, Doom’s not going to let them get far. This is the Thunderbolts at their most ruthless, which means no one’s getting out of this clean. Ultimate Wolverine #2, The Maker’s got his Council, and they’re sending Colossus, Omega Red, and Magik after Ultimate Wolverine. And just to make things messier, there’s a faction called the Opposition fighting for mutant liberation. Wolverine’s going to have to carve his way through all of them, but the real question is—who’s pulling the strings? Weapon X-Men #1, Wolverine, Deadpool, Cable, Chamber, and Thunderbird on the same team? This is Weapon X-Men, and it’s bringing an X-tra-sized first issue that throws them straight into an all-out war. A high-stakes mutant rescue goes sideways, revealing that their greatest enemy might be closer than they think. Writer Joe Casey and artist ChrisCross bring all the action, and if you’ve ever wanted to see these heavy hitters in one squad, this is the book for you. Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #3, juggling school, powers, and secret identities was always Peter Parker’s thing, but now he’s got The Enforcers to deal with. With a new animated series on the way for Disney+, this issue gives readers a fresh look at a younger Spider-Man in action. Zatanna #1, Jamal Campbell kicks off an all-new Zatanna limited series, and it’s not just another stage act. Zatanna’s trying to keep her life together, but when a ghostly new villain, The Lady White, kidnaps her crew, things get personal fast. Magic, curses, and illusions collide as Zatanna fights to unravel a mystery that could tear her apart. The Herculoids #1, Dynamite Entertainment expands their Hanna-Barbera universe, following up their Space Ghost success with The Herculoids! This classic team of defenders is the only thing standing between the legendary riches of Amzot and the galaxy’s most dangerous raiders. But a recent battle has unleashed a hidden darkness, and even The Herculoids might not be enough. Written by Tom Sniegoski and featuring art by Craig Rousseau, this issue also boasts covers from big names like Francesco Mattina and Mike Mignola. Godzilla Heist #1, from IDW Publishing, the ultimate distraction for a heist? Godzilla. One thief has figured out how to trigger kaiju attacks to pull off high-profile jobs, but now some dangerous people want in on the action. Writer Van Jensen and artist Kelsey Ramsay put together a story that asks, “What if Heat but with Godzilla?” It’s an absolutely wild premise, and if you’re into high-stakes crime stories with city-leveling monsters, this one’s for you.
