First Appearances You Didn’t Know You Needed, Forgot About, And Don’t Need
Welcome to Key Comics Thursday, where we dig up those oh-so-important first appearances you may have overlooked or completely forgotten (on purpose). Whether it’s a villain who vanished for 50 years, a cute green alien we all can’t stop obsessing over, or some heroes in pristine white suits begging for a Tide sponsorship, we’ve got it all. So sit back, enjoy, and maybe, just maybe, discover a hidden gem worth adding to your collection—or at least worth a chuckle.
Invincible #8 (2003) – Ah, the year 2003, when everyone was still getting over the Y2K scare. In this issue, we’re introduced to Darkblood Amber – not exactly a household name (yet), but hey, everyone’s gotta start somewhere. While Invincible is busy being, well, invincible, Amber’s first appearance sort of snuck in. Speculators: this one’s for you if you believe in obscure characters rising from the shadows someday. Maybe. Deathstroke #21 (2017) – Remember that sleek, new all-white suit everyone was talking about? No? Well, that’s because it’s Defiance’s first appearance, a group of edgy characters who decided that black was too mainstream. Decked out in their definitely-not-going-to-stain white outfits, they made their debut and left us wondering if they were auditioning for a Tide commercial. Aquaman #34 (1967) – This is the first time Aquabeast crawled out of the sea in 1967, and guess what? He took a LONG break before resurfacing in 2021. That’s a nice 54-year gap, huh? Maybe he was stuck in Atlantis traffic? Either way, you gotta love a character that takes over half a century to plan his comeback. Die Die Die #14 (2021) – What’s better than a first appearance of Grogu (aka Baby Yoda)? Oh, nothing much, just him chilling on a cover with a whole bunch of random characters like it’s some pop culture reunion. It’s the crossover nobody asked for, but you know, why not? Grogu’s there, and that’s all that really matters, right? 2021 sure was wild. Injustice Gods #1 (2013) – Back in 2013, this comic brought the video game universe to life. It’s almost like someone said, “Hey, let’s have Superman throw a tantrum and punch some friends,” and a comic was born. Injustice Gods #1 was the beginning of that lovely saga of heroes acting… well, not so heroic. Great for collectors, or just anyone who enjoys watching the Justice League unravel.
