Upon arriving to 5917 S. University Drive in Davie Florida, it was very apparent that I was coming up on something big. Although it is Halloween tomorrow, the typical Cosplay was in full effect, and any comic convention frequent visitor should have felt right at home immediately. The location of the FSC Store was on prime real estate in the same plaza as Home Depot. It was very easy to find and get to.
Mike, who runs the Miami SuperCon every year, has created the ultimate Comic Shop here in Davie. The 3500 square foot store has everything from Anime to a fridge with yogurt drinks (as well as Pepsi & Coke products). The “new” Comics are neatly placed on the right hand side of the store as soon as you walk in. Directly across from the comics are a plethora of action figures. The next isle gives an extremely long row of long boxes, to which if you cannot find a back issue here, then it doesn’t exist. Within the same row of back to back long boxes of back issues are the amazing statues that are on display in a few glass cabinets, absolutely beautifully displayed. The next isle brings everything Anime, models, toys, candy as well as game play items. The back of the store where the artist and guest were will make for a very nice gaming area on the weekends for sure. The front counter had a glass display going around it. Most of the glass that I could see (couldn’t see that well, too many people!), displayed the golden and silver age books. There were mostly golden and silver age comics displayed nicely in the back of the counter as well.
Overall, the lighting was fantastic; you didn’t have a “dark spot” in the entire store. The layout was very nice and well thought out, because the new comic book wall gave plenty of elbow room for new comic book day. You could easily fit 5 deep on Wednesday’s if need be. There is plenty of parking outside with the Home Depot right across the way in the same plaza, so no shortage of traffic or congestion here.
The event of Grand Opening day for the FSC store was an eventful one. What us to expect from Mike?!?! There were creators and guest in the back of the store signing and greeting fans as they made their way through the store. Guest included Martin Pierro, Manny Aguilera, Allen Bellman, Mark Sparacio, Greg Horn, Bill Rogers, Tom Croom, Vinnie Tartamella and original Tron/Caddieshack babe Cindy Morgan. At about 2:15pm is where the fist a cuffs started. Well in the full size wrestling ring right outside in the parking lot! Although wrestling is not my personal forte, I did have my 10 year old son with me, and the smile on his face was worth the entire day. I have to say, I enjoyed the way the fans (and my son) got into the whole scene. The wrestlers were having fun, the fans were having fun, and I found myself getting into the vibe of theatrical wrestling.
So in closing, I have to say thank you to all of the FSC employees and volunteers that were there. They were very helpful, and most of all had smiles on their faces. They too were enjoying themselves. SuperCon Sandy was awesome behind the counter ringing people up every minute that I was there. Nikita (Love you too! I spelled it right!), was an awesome teammate with SuperCon Sandy, and it was great meeting them both.
Mike, good luck and prosper. You have a great team in place, a great location, and a great product. See you at the SuperCon!
Below are some pictures from the event. Enjoy them as much as we enjoyed being there.
