Gotham_Central_1There are two sure fire hits this week and should not be missed. Lazarus (2013 Image) #1 comes highly recommended from Shaun Cobble (Breaking the 4th Wall) and Brianna Floss (InvestComics reviews – Bri’s reviews will be on InvestComics tomorrow. Be on the lookout for that!)). Shaun made sure to message me after reading this comic to inform me that Lazarus #1 needs to be an InvestComics’ Hot Pick this week. I ensured him that it was to appear anyways, but between Shaun’s raving and what Brianna’s words “ Rucka’s writing is top-notch, while Lark and Arca’s gorgeous art perfectly captures the fractured nature of the world and its inhabitants”, as well as a 10 out of a 10 rating, yes this solidifies that Lazarus #1 will be well on its way to an instant sellout and command some cash in the aftermarket. The Lazarus creative team of Greg Rucka and Michael Lark also brought readers Gotham Central from 2003. They have had success together already, and it looks like they hit their mark once again. Uncanny (2013 Dynamite) #1 will be the other book to look out for this week. Brianna gives this comic a 9 out of a 10. “…a fun ride” says Brianna, so strap in readers! The roller coaster is about to begin on sellout levels with two independent comics this week.

DC goes back to the well on Wednesday. The very successful, highly touted run of Superman/Batman from 2003 will begin its new run this week, this time staring the new 52 Supes and Bats. It’s their first meeting in the new 52. Writer Jeph Loeb/Ed McGuinness really took the 2003 series to a whole new level, as will writer Greg Pak and Jae Lee for the latest installment. Look for a more “emo” type run here. The cover itself seems very dark, as the inside will probably invoke the same. This isn’t a bad thing, just a change of pace from the previous series for sure probably. Demand will exceed supply, so be prepared for a second print announcement coming soon after Wednesday.

Larfleeze (2013 DC) #1 will star in his own comic this week. If you don’t know yet (you should), Lar’s first appearance was in Green Lantern #25 (2008). The great standalone Superman stories continue in Adventures of Superman (2013) 2nd Series #2 from some of the industry’s top talents. This week Oeming, Joelle Jones, and legend Sal Buscema show off their Superman tales.

Captain America (2012 7th Series) #8 reveals a character set for return that no one would ever imagine coming back. Please surprise us Marvel! Scarlet Spider (2012 2nd Series) #18 asks the question; who is Red Death? Let’s all read it and find out! And finally from the House of Ideas, Wolverine and the X-Men (2011) #32 we meet the new Hellions.

Kiss and WolverineUncanny X-Men #173Godzilla Rulers of the Earth (2013 IDW) #1 will be more Godzilla fun. IDW has the giant monster in a good place. They actually have created a fan base for this dude! Good job IDW! A couple of fun cool books to also check out this week are Atomic Robo and the Savage Sword of Dr. Dinosaur (2013) #1 from Red 5 Comics and Malevolent Mr Burns (2013 Bongo) #1.

A great cover this week from IDW’s Kiss Solo (2013 IDW) #4 Inadvertently pays homage to a famous Wolverine run pose pictured to the right. It also resembles Uncanny X-Men #173 a bit too. Awesome Peter Chris cover though! IDW kicking some ass.

That’s it for this week. Be sure to sign up for the InvestComics Newsletter!

  1. I’ve learnt some lessons recently since I’m new to this re-selling comics game.. In Australia I’ve found not many people like to buy comics of characters they don’t know. For instance it’s hard to sell Jupiters Legacy at cover price.
I know Lazarus will be a great comic I’m still buying it to read myself, and getting 1 other copy to save (jus in case it catches on)
So I think my pick of the week would be Batman Superman, cause it should be a easy sell, and also shouldn’t matter if I don’t even bother selling it straight away. So that’s my advice for anyone new to this, if u want a easy sell, get stuff people are familiar with, And like your disclaimer says, be wise and have FUN

    1. While I respect your comments because they are your opinion, I have to point out a few things. The re-sell or flipping of comics ONLY works on Ebay. That’s it. It will not work in any other market. I understand that people in general will gravitate towards familiarity i.e. Superman, Batman, Spider-Man, etc, but it’s actually the ones that no one knows about that sell the best. Lazarus #1 will probably do very well in the aftermarket (Ebay). A few examples of comics that are not familiar with the masses that sell or have sold for a premium on Ebay are Saga, East of West, Rachael Rising, Nowhere Men, Sixth Gun, The Last of Us, and the list goes on. Selling or thinking that familiarity is the way to go is a dead end actually. Everyone on the planet will buy a Superior Spider-Man #1, but how many will have an East of West #1? Thanks for your input Mr. E, it’s always appreciated!! Remember, invest wisely, but have FUN!!

      1. I get what u mean about how every1 owns the most popular characters like Spidey, i jus meant they are easy and fast to sell.. And yeah I also forgot what I already know about how the rare unknown books sell the highest on eBay like Saga #1 etc.
I mentioned Jupiters legacy is hard to sell, maybe cause its jus a mini series I believe… But u jus put my faith back into Lazarus cause I think it’s a ongoing title.. I have been waiting for Lazarus for a long time. And I’ll prob be kicking myself if it sells well, I might pick up a few extra copies 🙂 thanks and yeah I always have fun

        1. Yes, and I’ve noticed that mini-series often start out well and cool down by the 2nd or 3rd issue. Anyone notice that Todd the Ugliest Kidd will have an issue #5? Ongoing series? Also five ghosts have become Ongoing. You never know :-).

          1. I only read Todd the ugliest 1 2 3 4 yesterday, and it was awesome lol loved it,, Can’t wait for number 5 I noticed it said there would be a number 5 coming

  2. As always good report Jay. I shared my recent succcess with Terry on my Ebay selling profits. Not bad, but it does take a lot of work. It was fun, but after a while, you realize it’s a game that always has you on the run.

I’d like Superman Unchained and Batman/Superman – but due to the supply of these books, I wouldn’t get too caught up on these as Modern Comics are released at alarming rates. If anything, I’m waiting for Manhattan projects, Saga, Mind Mgmt, and Peter Panzerfaust to heat back up again this fall. If these series remain cold, then it’s just a cycle.

It seems comics are so cold now in general during Conventional season. East of West was my pick, but you can still get #1 at cover price and with a 54,000 publication run, and multiple printings, it’s hard to speculate if this will ever reach the success of the books from 2011.

I feel 2011-2012 was the peak year for Modern comics, and the field kind of leveled off. I would love to hear people’s thoughts. As of now, I’m gearing up for Rat Queens #1, The Star Wars #1, and God is Dead #1. Other than that, I’m kind of laying low for the next quarter.

  3. There’s one other book in particular like Lazarus I been waiting for, Battling Boy. Due in October I believe. Since I been waiting so long for both these books, I should just stick with my original gut feeling and go for it and get a bunch of copies… Not much to lose. Thanks for your advice/input

    1. Lazarus #1 could be a hit this week as speculated. Good choice. I’m looking at variants for it, which also eat at the wallet.

  4. Has there been a debate concerning Larfleeze’s first. Is GL 25 a cameo ( he is in shadow I believe )? If so then DC Universe 0 would be the first ( there is a 1.00 cover 2nd print which is more rare than the 50 cent cover )

That Batman/Superman Lee cover is sick!
Let’s hope that series makes up for the god awful Man of Steel film that just came out.
