Luke Skywalker is hinting that he is read to begin production on a movie based on his 1996 Dark Horse comic The Black Pearl.
At an event in Los Angeles, actor Mark Hamill, forever famous, of course, for his role as Luke Skywalker in Star Wars, but also beloved by comic and cartoon fans for his voiceover work, which includes a long stint as The Joker in Batman: The Animated series, dropped a lot of hints about a project he is about to start working on, which obviously pointed to a project based on his comic book, The Black Pearl. Hamill has been publicly stating his desire to make a movie based on the comic for years, and it appears that he will finally be getting that chance. Though offers have come in for the movie to be produced by a major studio, Hamill has secured investors on his own and will be producing it as an indy movie, allowing for more creative freedom and the ability for him to direct the movie himself. Besides his hints (it’s based on a comic book he’s written, set in the real world, andis a drama with elements of dark humor), Here is what he had to say about the project:
“My two co-writers wrote a David O. Russell film for Paramount, and now they’ve very hot. So now there are people who are willing to give us $30 million to make the movie. But if we took that deal, I wouldn’t get to direct. If you go over about $8 million, you have to start getting foreign sales before you start shooting. But if you stay in the $5-to-$7 million range, you don’t have to do presales and you can maintain much more creative control.”
The Black Pearl, co-written by Eric Johnson and illustrated by H. M. Baker, was originally published by Dark Horse in 1996. It is the only comics work by Hamill that could really be turned into a movie, and so it is almost definitely the project he is referring to.
