First up, we have Web of Spider-Man #70 from 1990, where our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man undergoes a gamma-fueled transformation into the astonishing Spider-Hulk. Penned by Gerry Conway with art by Alex Saviuk, this issue answers the question no one asked: What if Spider-Man had anger management issues and a green complexion? A high-grade copy of this curiosity recently sold on eBay for around $20.
Next, let’s travel back to 1965 with Avengers #21, introducing the villainous Power Man. Crafted by the legendary duo of Stan Lee and Don Heck, this issue features a villain whose name would later be appropriated by Luke Cage—because who wouldn’t want to share a moniker with a bad guy? A high-grade copy of this Silver Age classic fetched approximately $200 in a recent eBay sale.
Fast forward to 2007, where The Umbrella Academy made its debut in a Free Comic Book Day issue. Conceived by Gerard Way of My Chemical Romance fame and brought to life by artist Gabriel Bá, this 12-page prelude introduced us to a dysfunctional family of superheroes. A CGC 9.8 graded copy of this first appearance recently sold for about $150 on eBay.
Now, let’s talk about Shazam! #28 from 1977, marking the second appearance of Black Adam. Under the guidance of writer E. Nelson Bridwell and artist Kurt Schaffenberger, Black Adam returns to challenge Shazam, setting the stage for their enduring rivalry. High-grade copies of this issue have been known to sell for around $300.
Lastly, we have Black Lightning #1 from 1977, introducing Jefferson Pierce, a.k.a. Black Lightning. Created by Tony Isabella with art by Trevor Von Eeden, this issue spotlights one of DC’s first African American superheroes. A high-grade copy of this historic debut recently sold for approximately $150 on eBay.
So there you have it—a selection of key comics that may not make you rich but will certainly enrich your collection with their unique stories and characters. Happy collecting!
